A massive tree collapsed onto one of Kuala Lumpur's busiest streets on Tuesday (May 7), resulting in the death of a man and injuries to two others.

Monorail services were disrupted, and over a dozen cars were damaged, according to officials. Social media videos and photos showed the uprooted tree sprawled across Jalan Sultan Ismail road, close to the Petronas Twin Towers, amid heavy traffic.

The body of a 47-year-old man was retrieved from the site by police and firefighters, while 17 vehicles were affected by the incident, as reported by Reuters.

According to a police official, a 26-year-old ride-share driver from Malaysia and his 72-year-old Swedish passenger were injured and hospitalised for treatment.

Photographs displayed some of the tree's branches extending onto an elevated monorail track that runs alongside the road.

The monorail operator announced a delay in services due to the incident.

Besides, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has announced that civil servants' salaries will increase by over 13 per cent starting December. Anwar had previously promised reductions in subsidies and increased taxes this year, alongside reallocating financial assistance to those in need. Analysts have cautioned about potential inflation and increased fuel expenses resulting from these subsidy cuts, especially with declining exports and a slowdown in economic growth.

Massive tree collapse kills 47-year-old man on busy road in Malaysia

For three years, doctors assessed a 11-year-old girl with persistent headaches around 30 times before finally diagnosing her with a brain tumour. Tia Gordon, from Northampton, first fell ill during the Covid lockdown in March 2020. Her sickness initially occurred every few months, then increased to monthly, and eventually became a daily ordeal from November 2023 to January 2024.

Despite many consultations, doctors repeatedly missed identifying her tumour, instead attributing her symptoms to migraines and stomach bugs.

Even when she developed new symptoms like a stiff neck, medical professionals dismissed them as issues related to her sleeping posture and referred her to a physiotherapist.

As her condition deteriorated, affecting her balance and ability to walk, she was finally admitted to the hospital. An emergency scan revealed a 3.5cm brain tumour, specifically a pilocytic astrocytoma, the most common type in children. Following a lengthy 10-hour surgery, the benign tumour was successfully removed.

Tia's mother, Imogen Darby, who works as a pharmacy dispenser, mentioned that Tia's glasses prescription was altered four times before the tumour was identified.

Ms Darby said, ''I was told Tia had stomach bugs and migraines. The first thing I was told, because it was the summer, (was that) she just needed to drink more water. After probably a year, she got diagnosed with migraines and they gave her paracetamol for that. She was also given another medication for that and her final diagnosis in January (this year) from paediatrics was migraine with sickness.''

''Over more than three years, I took Tia to doctors, she was refused MRIs, she was refused to be seen by emergency paediatrics, I called 111, I went to A&E, she had her glasses changed four times, she was given medication and she had a consultant, but it took for her to be unable to walk for her to get the care she needed,'' she added.

Following the operation, the young girl is eager to resume her usual routines such as reading and playing dodgeball. However, she will undergo MRI scans every three months for the next five years and is currently undergoing physiotherapy, in addition to regular appointments with neurologists.

According to Cancer Research UK, approximately 175 children receive a diagnosis of astrocytoma annually in the UK.

Cameron Miller, director of external affairs and strategy at the Brain Tumour Charity, said, ''We wish Tia all the best with her continuing treatment and thank Imogen for sharing her story. Sadly, it's one that we often hear. For many brain tumour patients, it simply takes too long to be diagnosed – and this is one of the reasons why we're calling for a National Brain Tumour Strategy.''

A mansion on the Black Sea coast, often associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has reportedly been renovated to include a church equipped with a throne, according to a report by the Russian investigative outlet Proekt.

The outlet recently published videos of the "Putin's palace" following the renovations. The existence of the mansion was initially revealed in 2021 by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who claimed it featured a wine cellar, a casino, and an ice rink. Russia has not officially responded to the Proekt report. The palace is secluded from the rest of Russia by 17,000 acres of forest and a special no-fly zone.

"Many viewers of Navalny's video remembered the entertainment areas - with a pole, a casino, as well as a room with toy cars and a railway," Proekt said in its report.

The report also suggested that the renovations indicate Putin's strong interests in war and religion. The images reveal a private church within the residence adorned with a triptych and a wooden throne.

The walls are adorned with crosses, and the triptych is believed to depict "Saint Prince Vladimir," according to two art historians and an icon painter cited by Proekt. The outlet highlighted a chandelier made with red crystals from the French manufacturer Baccarat, valued at $1 million.

In his 2021 video, Navalny alleged that the property's cost amounted to $1.3 billion and claimed it was financed through a complex corruption scheme. This scheme allegedly involved Putin granting high-ranking positions and profitable government contracts to his allies in partially state-owned energy companies.

In 2021, thousands of Russians took to the streets following Navalny's revelation about Putin's Black Sea estate.

The judge presiding over Donald Trump's criminal trial fined him $1,000 on Monday (May 6), for breaching the gag order for the tenth time.

Justice Juan Merchan cautioned that he would contemplate incarcerating Trump for any subsequent infractions. Merchan noted that the nine fines of $1,000 each imposed previously did not appear to dissuade Trump from violating the gag order, which prohibits him from publicly discussing jurors, witnesses, and the families of the judge and prosecutors if such remarks try to interfere with the case.

Merchan stated that he saw jail time as "truly the last resort" for several reasons, including the trial's disruption, the political implications of imprisoning a leading presidential candidate before an election, and the exceptional security challenges of detaining a former president with ongoing Secret Service protection.

Nonetheless, he said that Trump's persistent and deliberate violations of the gag order amounted to a "direct attack on the rule of law."

“I do not want to impose a jail sanction and have done everything I can to avoid doing so. But I will if necessary,” Merchan said from the bench in the absence of the jury.

Judge fines Trump $1,000 for 10th gag order breach, warns of jail time

A man from South Africa, who survived over 10 years in coma, has recounted his miraculous journey of recovery. Martin Pistorius, from Johannesburg, shared the terrifying experience of being trapped in his own body, unable to move or communicate, yet fully conscious of everything happening around him.

His struggles began at the age of 12 when he returned home from school with a sore throat, as reported by The Sun. Initially thought to be the flu, his condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in the loss of mobility, independent eating, and communication abilities. Diagnosed with cryptococcal meningitis and brain tuberculosis, he eventually slipped into coma.

His mother said Martin's last words as a child were spoken in the hospital: "When home?"

Doctors said they couldn't do anything, but his parents decided to keep him alive in a care centre. Four years later, he woke up, but he still couldn't talk or move.

"I remember around my 16th birthday people talking about the stubble on my chin and wondering whether to shave me. It scared and confused me to listen to what was being said because, although I had no memories or sense of a past, I was sure I was a child and the voices were speaking about a soon-to-be man,'' he said.

He shared that he stayed informed about significant world events by listening to the television or people talking nearby.

'I was aware of everything, just like any normal person. Everyone was so used to me not being there that they didn't notice when I began to be present again. The stark reality hit me that I was going to spend the rest of my life like that – alone. For me, that feeling of complete and utter powerlessness is probably the worst feeling I have ever experienced, and I hope I never have to experience it again. Years went by, but he remained confined in a motionless body, with only his thoughts and imagination to keep him company.

In 2001, when he was 25 years old, a caregiver at the day centre urged his parents to take him to the Centre For Augmentative And Alternative Communication at the University Of Pretoria. There, he successfully passed a test by using eye movements to point at objects.

His parents then purchased a computer for him, equipped with communication software akin to what Stephen Hawking used. After extensive practice over many years, he became proficient in communicating through synthetic speech. Eventually, he mastered website development and graduated from university. In 2008, he met his future wife, Joan, through his sister Kim, and they married the following year. They welcomed their son, Sebastian Albert Pistorius, in 2018, and he often shares family photos on Instagram.

China's President Xi Jinping kicked off a two-day state visit at the French presidential palace on Monday (May 6), with discussions expected to centre on trade disputes and diplomatic initiatives to persuade Beijing to exert its influence to encourage Russia to end the conflict in Ukraine.

In Paris, Xi initially participated in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, focussing on broader EU interests. Macron stated at the outset of the meeting that discussions would prioritise trade matters, aiming to guarantee "fair competition," before addressing the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“We are at a turning point in our history” as the Europe-China relationship is faced with challenges, Macron said.

The talks are aimed at sharing “both our shared positions and our concerns, to try to overcome them, because the future of our continent will very clearly also depend on our ability to develop balanced relations with China,” he said.

Macron, who strongly supports Europe's economic independence, wants to talk about French worries about China's investigation into whether to impose extra charges on cognac and other European brandy. He also wants to discuss tensions about French cosmetics and other industries. In a recent speech, he criticised both China and the United States for their trade practices, saying they both support protecting their own businesses and giving them subsidies.

At the start of the meeting in Paris, Xi said “the world today has entered a new period of turbulence and change.”

“As two important forces in the world, China and Europe should ... continuously make new contributions to world peace and development,” he said.

Chinese scientists have developed a water-based battery that contains nearly double the energy density of traditional lithium batteries. This innovation holds promise for potential use in electric vehicles.

The research, published in a paper in Nature Energy on April 23 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), outlines the iodine and bromine-based aqueous battery's impressive energy density of 1200 watt-hours per litre (Wh/L), surpassing the 700Wh/L of non-aqueous lithium batteries.

Additionally, the researchers also spoke about the safety advantages of their aqueous battery over non-aqueous lithium batteries, which are known for their high flammability.

The stable battery “shows promising potential for the development of next-generation high-energy-density and safe rechargeable aqueous batteries”, the researchers wrote, as quoted by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Their findings “may expand aqueous battery applications in the power battery field”, said corresponding author Li Xianfeng, a professor at the CAS Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, who was quoted in a statement from the academy.

The Bombay High Court on Monday (May 6), granted temporary bail to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal for two months on medical grounds. Goyal had been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case.

Justice N J Jamadar, sitting as a single judge, directed Goyal to furnish a surety of ₹1 lakh ($1197) and refrain from leaving Mumbai without prior permission from the trial court.

"The applicant (Goyal) shall be released on interim bail for a period of two months. He shall abide by all conditions imposed," the bench said.

Goyal has been instructed to hand over his passport as well.

Naresh Goyal, aged 75, had requested interim bail on grounds of medical and humanitarian reasons, as both he and his wife, Anita Goyal, are facing cancer battles.

Why was Naresh Goyal arrested?

In September 2023, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detained Goyal on charges of laundering money and diverting loans totalling ₹538.62 crore that had been provided to Jet Airways by Canara Bank.

In November 2023, his wife was arrested when the ED submitted its chargesheet in the case. She got bail the same day due to her age and health.

In February, a special court rejected bail for Naresh Goyal but allowed him to go to a private hospital for treatment. Goyal then asked the Bombay High Court for bail, saying he needed medical help.

During the hearing, Goyal's lawyer asked the court to let him go on humanitarian grounds. He said Goyal had health problems and wanted to support his sick wife.

The Enforcement Directorate didn't support the request because there wasn't a recent medical report. They said it was okay if Goyal stayed longer in the hospital. ED's lawyer, Hiten Venegaonkar, suggested that the court could let Goyal stay in the hospital for four more weeks and then get a new medical report to check how he was doing.

The government of Berlin has chosen to offer a lakeside villa, once belonging to a prominent Nazi figure, at no cost due to the high expenses associated with its maintenance, as per The Telegraph (UK).

This property, situated in the rural area north of the German capital, has a troubling past as it was formerly owned by Joseph Goebbels, who was Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister. Authorities in Berlin have disclosed their intentions to give away the villa for free, according to the report.

Goebbels, a significant figure within the Nazi regime, held a key position in Hitler's inner circle and wielded considerable influence over Nazi propaganda efforts.

He was good at using newspapers, radio, and movies to spread Nazi ideas and control what people knew in Germany. He and his family died by killing themselves at the end of World War II, as per History.com.

The big house and land Goebbels owned, built in 1936, were used for different things, including his secret meetings with actresses.

Today, the Berlin government owns the property but struggles as its upkeep is expensive and it has a bad history linked to the Nazis.

Berlin's Finance Minister Stefan Evers mentioned that the state of Berlin is offering the property as a "gift" to anyone interested in "taking over the site."

Since 2000, the property has been empty, and the villa, situated approximately 10 miles north of Berlin, has significantly decayed. It now has broken windows and missing sections, requiring refurbishment.

Several options are being considered for the estate, including acquisition by the federal government or the neighbouring state of Brandenburg. Alternatively, it could be purchased by a private individual.
