The first-ever lunar rover of the United Arab Emirates lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on December 11th on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The Rashid rover is riding on Hakuto-R, a Japanese Lunar lander engineered by the private firm ispace. If successful, this will be the first commercial spacecraft to make a controlled landing on the moon.&nbsp;

Weighing 10kg, the Rashid rover is built by Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, of the UAE's National Space Agency. The manufacture and supply of the rover's structural parts, reveal the rover's India connection. ST Advanced Composites(STAC), a private firm in southern India had manufactured the composite parts that went into the making of the rover. The firm also supplies advanced composite materials such as metallic and carbon fibre for India's space agency and government-run defence firms and few global space technology&nbsp; 
companies.

"In space missions, we are talking about materials that are at least 10 times lighter and 5 times stronger than steel. We built the rover's structures using magnesium alloy, carbon fibre and aluminium" said Dr. Devendran Thirunavukarasu, Director, STAC.

On the Lunar surface, the four-wheeled rover is expected to spend up to two lunar days(approximately 28earth days). It is expected to touch down in the Atlas Crater in the Northeast part of the moon. The launch of UAE's lunar mission comes a while after NASA's Artemis I mission, which is a preliminary step to return man to the moon.&nbsp;

Around mid-2023, India is also expected to launch its third lunar mission. While the first Indian Lunar Mission Chandrayaan-1 was an orbiter-only study of the moon, the second mission Chandrayaan-2 was an orbiter, lander &amp;rover configuration. However, the soft landing of the lander rover turned out to be a failure. It is to perform the maiden Lunar landing that the Indian Space agency ISRO will be carrying out Chandryaan-3 next year.&nbsp;

"2022 has been an extraordinary year for Indian Chess, as the country has 77 Grandmasters, a lot of whom are from Chennai" said Indian Chess Legend Vishwanathan Anand. To earn the Grandmaster title, one has to secure three Grandmaster norms and surpass 2500 ELO points marks. Anand was speaking at an event organized by the Tamil Nadu Government, where it was announced that corporates and individual donors could adopt and maintain Government-run schools, as part of the "Namma School"(Our School) initiative.&nbsp;

According to the Tamil Nadu Government, donors and companies willing to donate to Government schools can access a state-wide database that covers nearly 38,000 schools. They said that the before and after pictures of the work carried out with donor funds would also be updated on the 'Namma School' portal.&nbsp;

On the occasion of the launch of this initiative, leading corporates and individuals from Tamil Nadu donated more than Rs.50cr or $6.04million. The initiative was launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and senior Government officials.

The demand for weapons has grown world over following the Ukraine-Russia war and this is something that will reflect in the defence budgets, Maj Gen (retd) Yoav Har-Even, CEO of Israeli firm Rafael Advanced Defence Systems told WION. Rafael has been offering various weapons and weapon systems to the Indian Armed Forces for more than 25 years and the firm now hopes to export the missiles that they make in India. The Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missile, the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(MRSAM) and Spice guidance kits for air dropped bombs are a few Rafael systems used by India.&nbsp;

Speaking to WION on the sidelines of the roll out of the 100th&nbsp;MRSAM from the Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems(KRAS) Indo-Israeli facility in Hyderabad, Har-Even said that Rafael has been working in India for more than 25 years. "Five years ago, we got the vision from the Indian Prime Minister for Make-in-India and we joined with the Kalyani group to establish KRAS and make the private sector a relevant player in the defence industry" he said.

On the plans to export made-in-India missiles and technology to foreign customers, he said that it would be possible once large quantity of production is achieved and the hardware is first inducted in adequate numbers into the Indian Armed forces. He indicated that there is a lot of potential to export made-in-India missiles and hardware, which is jointly developed with Rafael. The Israeli-firm is looking to export such hardware to their customers around the world.&nbsp;

Queried about the future projects of Rafael, he said that the company had a heritage of developing the 'Trophy' active protection system for battle tanks, 'Spike' family of anti-tank guided missile, Iron Dome Missile system and 'Litening' electro-optic targeting pod. "We are now developing and producing the next-gen of all the missiles, electro-optic and communications systems, these are all relevant to the Indian market. Once the customer decides that they want certain capabilities, we are ready to not only sell, but to produce and do some of the development in India. This is our vision and we are going to do it" he said.&nbsp;

While Har-Even agreed that the impact of the Ukraine-Russia war had caused production slowdown of defence hardware and some shortages, he said that it had also led to an increased demand for weapons and that Rafael would be ready to meet the demand. However, if one is to design an all-new aerospace vehicle and intends to validate the newly-developed prototype, the preliminary step would be to test it in a wind tunnel. A large tube with air flowing through it can be used to replicate the interaction between the air and an object flying through the air, such is the working principle of a wind tunnel.&nbsp;

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recently conducted the maiden blow-down test of their all-new wind tunnel, installed at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC). The Trisonic Wind tunnel, as it is known, facilitates testing under three conditions - subsonic (below the speed of the sound), at the speed of sound and supersonic (faster than the speed of sound). The tunnel measures 160 metres in length and has a maximum cross-section of 5.4 metres.

ISRO has said that this tunnel is a system to aid the aerodynamic design of rockets and re-entry spacecraft by characterising a scaled model by evaluating forces, moments, load distribution, unsteady pressures, acoustic levels etc. The tunnel has an overall length of about 160m and a maximum cross-section of 5.4m. The tunnel can be used for testing various space vehicles in three flight regimes - below the speed of sound, at the speed of sound and above the speed of sound: hence the name Trisonic Wind Tunnel. 
 
The tunnel can simulate flight conditions from 0.2 times the speed of sound (68 m/s) to 4 times the speed of sound (1360 m/s).&nbsp;

The wind tunnel moves air around an object, making it seem as if the object is flying. However, the object is held in a stationary and steady manner. The object could be a sub-component, a scale model of the aerospace vehicle or a full-sized vehicle. As the tunnel is in operation, special equipment can be used to study the various forces that are acting upon the test object.

It is known that the Indian space agency is working on a manned spaceflight programme, on a test vehicle (RLV-TD) that can be launched like a rocket and land like a plane and also various heavy-lift rockets for future use. Every new concept and design being developed by the Indian space agency can now be validated at the new wind tunnel and thereby be fine-tuned further.&nbsp;

Signifying the ever-growing defence and diplomatic ties between India and Israel, the CEO of Israeli Defence firm Rafael Advanced Systems said that their vision didn't stop with making missiles in India, but was also keen on exporting made-in-India missiles. Kalyani Rafael Advanced Systems (KRAS), a joint venture between Rafael and India's Kalyani, assemble kits for the Indo-Israeli Medium Range Surface to Air Missile(MRSAM).&nbsp;

Operated by the Indian Army and the Air Force, the MRSAM missile can take down multiple aerial targets such as jets, drones, helicopters, and incoming missiles, within a 70km range. The missile kit or mid-section refers to the frontal end of the missile, which comprises the seeker and crucial electronics.

In 2019, KRAS received an order for supplying midsections for 1000MRSAMs, this deal was worth $100mn. The 100th kit of this batch was rolled out of the KRAS facility in the Indian City of Hyderabad on Tuesday, for delivery to the Indian Armed Forces.&nbsp;

Speaking at the event,&nbsp;Maj Gen(Retd)Yoav Har-Even,&nbsp;President &amp; CEO, of Rafael Advanced Systems said that their firm had been offering a variety of services in India, for more than 25 years. He said that Rafael has been collaborating and working with the Indian Defence Research Development Organization(DRDO) and Government-run defence firms.&nbsp;

Sharing the vision about future milestones for the KRAS joint venture, he said that they hoped to deliver the 1000th MRSAM midsection and the 500th Spike Anti-Tank Guided missile. He added that the strategic relationship between Israel and India has now shifted their firm's focus towards India.

"Want to make this company a true missile house and offer modern weapons for the defence of the country, high-quality hardware to forces. We are in touch and tandem with the DRDO in technology development" said Baba Kalyani, Chairman &amp; Managing Director, of Bharat Forge Limited. He added that the Kalyani group had a large capability in artillery, ammunition, armoured vehicles, small arms and electronics.&nbsp;

He said that the Kalyani group was the first private firm in India to be given the order to export artillery guns(155mm) out of India. With more such export orders, he expressed optimism about the Indian defence industry being able to even surpass the export estimate that has been stated by the Government of India.

The ceremony&nbsp;took place at the KRAS facility in the Indian city of Hyderabad.&nbsp;

Launched in 2003, the 'Opportunity' Mars Exploration Rover mission is considered among the most successful exploration efforts of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA).&nbsp;

The rover landed on the Red planet in 2004, with the aim of searching for evidence that water once existed on the planet's surface. The Opportunity rover made several key discoveries during its mission, including evidence of the previous existence of water on Mars and conditions at that time could have been suitable for sustaining microbial life. The rover explored the Martian terrain for almost 15 years, far outlasting her planned 90-day mission.

Built by Cornell University students, the Mars rover model is an interactive exhibit that is tailored to visiting school students, features activities built around the Mars Rover and space exploration. The full-scale model has been placed at The American Center, located inside the US Consulate General in the Southern Indian city of Chennai. The exhibit is open for public viewing from Monday to Friday, between 10am to 4pm, until January 2023. Following the temporary display in Chennai, this model is expected to be placed in Bengaluru, as a permanent exhibit.&nbsp;

In its 14year lifespan, the rover captured more than 2.17lakh images, travelled 28 miles on the Martian surface and negotiated slopes as steep at 32degrees.

Launching the exhibit of the full-scale Rover model, U.S. Consul General Chennai, Judith Ravin said that “Our U.S. and Indian scientists and engineers have an opportunity to work together to change the world... We hope that the ties between our two countries in the space sector, including between NASA and ISRO, will continue to expand with future missions to Mars and beyond. We hope this exhibit will inspire students such as yourselves to explore all the opportunities that lie ahead for you in the space sector as you begin to think through what you want to study and where you work".&nbsp;

The full-scale model has been placed at The American Center, located inside the US Consulate General in the Southern Indian city of Chennai. The exhibit is open for public viewing from Monday to Friday, between 10am to 4pm, until January 2023. Following the temporary display in Chennai, this model is expected to be placed in Bengaluru, as a permanent exhibit. In its 14year lifespan, the rover captured more than 2.17lakh images, travelled 28 miles on the Martian surface and negotiated slopes as steep at 32degrees. Launching the exhibit of the full-scale Rover model, U.S. Consul General Chennai, Judith Ravin said that “Our U.S. and Indian scientists and engineers have an opportunity to work together to change the world... We hope that the ties between our two countries in the space sector, including between NASA and ISRO, will continue to expand with future missions to Mars and beyond. We hope this exhibit will inspire students such as yourselves to explore all the opportunities that lie ahead for you in the space sector as you begin to think through what you want to study and where you work".

The minister was in the city for inaugurating the Drone Skilling and Training Virtual E-Learning Platform at the Chennai manufacturing facility&nbsp;of India's homegrown&nbsp;drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace. He also flagged off 'Operation 777', that is meant to educate and demonstrate the efficacy of drones for different agricultural uses across 777 districts in India.&nbsp;

According to the company, the nationwide Drone Yatra is their attempt to familiarise farmers about the usage and features of Garuda's Kisan Drones, which are meant to serve agricultural purposes. It also aims to train youth in gaining experience as drone pilots.

"With a dual objective of empowering farmers and creating employment for Indian youth, we are committed to manufacturing at least one lakh Kisan Drones in India, by 2024," said Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and&nbsp;CEO, Garuda Aerospace.&nbsp;

The company says that their Kisan Drones are fitted with sensors, cameras, sprayers and help in increasing food crop productivity, reduce crop loss, reduce farmer exposure to harmful chemicals.&nbsp;

Minister Anurag Thakur estimated that India would require at least 100,000 drone pilots in 2023 and that each pilot would earn at least ₹50,000-80,000 a month.

"If you take the conservative average of ₹50,000 a month for 100,000 youth, for an entire year, it would amount to ₹6000 crore worth employment in the drone sector."

The minister added that there are over 200 drone start-ups in the country and that the number is set to grow, thereby generating new job opportunities for youth.&nbsp;

The first session of the Day 1 of placements at IIT-Madras in Chennai, has led to 25 students receiving offer letters with pay packages of over $123K (Rs.1crore). According to the institute, the total number of offers (445) received at the end of Session 1 on Day 1 this year, is 10% higher than (407) offers received last year.

In terms of International offers, 15 offers from four companies were received this year, as against 11 offers from four companies at this time last year.

The 445 job offers received on December 1&nbsp;including&nbsp;the pre-placement offers (PPOs) that the students received following their internships with various companies.&nbsp;

However, there is a decline in the number of firms registered for Phase 1 recruitment and the number of profiles they are recruiting for, compared to 2021. While 331 firms have registered this year for recruiting 722 profiles, there were 382 firms and 738 profiles last year. This could possibly be a reflection of the industry scenario in the Western world where Big tech firms have announced massive job cuts and a freeze on hiring.&nbsp;

Notably, the recruitment processes in 2020 and 2021 have been done via virtual mode, owing to the pandemic. In the pandemic year 2021, 1498 students had registered for placements, whereas 1722 have registered for placements this year, which are being conducted in the hybrid mode.

In 2021 and 2022, the main recruiters at the Institute have been Microsoft, Flipkart, Texas Instruments, Bajaj Auto, Goldman Sachs, Boston Consulting Group, JP Morgan Chase &amp; Co etc. The phase 1 of placements are expected to go on till 7th December.&nbsp;
