We stand in full solidarity with the Indian people." Other countries in Europe like Denmark, France, Germany are also extending support. Denmark's envoy to Delhi Freddy Svane tells WION, "We are working closely with MEA to assist India with whatever is required. That’s what friends are about”. Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday announced that her country is preparing urgent support for India to deal with the ongoing Covid pandemic. She said, "To the people of India, I want to express my sympathy on the terrible suffering that COVID-19 has again brought over your communities. Germany stands in solidarity with India and is urgently preparing a mission of support." Armed Forces Medical Services or AFMS will be importing 23 mobile oxygen generation plants from Germany. These plants will be deployed in AFMS hospitals catering to Covid patients. From Germany, containers are also being imported. After much criticism over not allowing the import of raw material for manufacturing of covid vaccines in India, top officials of the US Govt also extended support to India. US secretary of state Antony Blinken in a tweet-statement said, "Our hearts go out to the Indian people in the midst of the horrific COVID-19 outbreak. We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government, and we will rapidly deploy additional support to the people of India and India's healthcare heroes." US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, in a near-simultaneous tweet, said, "The US is deeply concerned by the severe COVID outbreak in India. We are working around the clock to deploy more supplies and support to our friends and partners in India as they bravely battle this pandemic. More very soon." US is expected to announce its support to India soon, though a big focus remains on when it lifts a ban on the export of covid vaccine raw material. India is the largest producer of vaccines globally, but manufacturing is being hampered due to the lack of raw material. Meanwhile, India's neighbours, Afghanistan and Iran, have also extended support to New Delhi. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, foreign minister Atmar and envoy to India Farid Mamundzay all tweeted and showed solidarity for India. Afghan President said, "Our hearts go out to the Indian people and government as they fight the horrendous outbreak of Covid. On behalf of the Afghan people and government, we send our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish a quick recovery to those who are suffering from the virus." Iran's health minister Dr Saeed Namaki in a letter to India's health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan extended support, saying, "The government and people of Iran are ready to spare no technical assistance, expertise and equipment in these difficult days and at the height of the plight of the dear citizens of India with the COVID-19 epidemic." A whole host of countries have extended solidarity with India. These are China, Pakistan, Bhutan, Solvenia, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Singapore. So far, India has been able to get four tankers from Singapore and liquid Oxygen from Saudi Arabia. More medicines from Singapore will arrive tonight.

Covid Crisis: EU, UK, US, Denmark pitch in to assist India

Indian Navy on Thursday pitched in to locate the missing Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala-402. The submarine went missing on Wednesday, 60 miles off the coast of Bali with 53 people on board.

Indian Navy has sent its Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV), which departed from Visakhapatnam to support the Indonesian Navy in search and rescue efforts for KRI Nanggala.

Equipped with the latest technology and capabilities, DSRV has a Side Scan Sonar to locate the position of any submarine in distress. It can provide immediate relief by posting Emergency Life Support Containers with the help of Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV).

Indian Defence ‌Minister Rajnath Singh held a telephonic conversation with his Indonesian counterpart Gen Prabowo Subianto.

“I am extremely pained to hear about the missing Indonesian Submarine Nanggala with 53 crew on board. As a well wisher and a defence Minister myself I can feel the pain and anguish. At this point I would like to extend the full support of the Indian Armed Forces to the Indonesian Rescue effort,” Singh said, according to a release from the Indian Navy.

“I have also tasked the Indian Air Force to see the feasibility of induction of the DSRV intervention system by air. India is committed to assist our strategic partners during times of necessity. Please accept my concern and best wishes to a successful rescue,” he said.

Gen Subianto acknowledged and appreciated India’s support to Indonesia, the release said.

India is among the few countries in the world capable of undertaking Search and Rescue of a disabled submarine through a DSRV, the Navy release said.

Indian Navy’s DSRV system can locate a submarine upto 1,000 metre depth utilising its state-of-the art Side Scan Sonar (SSS) and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). After the submarine is successfully located, another sub module of DSRV- the Submarine Rescue Vehicle (SRV) - mates with the submarine to rescue the trapped personnel. The SRV can also be used to provide emergency supplies to the submarine.

Indian Navy and Indonesian Navy share a strong partnership of operational cooperation. The two navies have been exercising regularly in the past and have developed synergy and interoperability which is considered important for the present mission.

The Indian effort comes even as both countries have been engaging on several fronts from defence to maritime collaboration.

Indian Navy has been providing support in the region in several ways, including by providing medicine, food supplies amid the Covid pandemic. Under its Sagar missions 1, 2 and 3, it reached out to more than 10 countries in the Indian Ocean region, Africa and ASEAN with supplies to deal with the Covid crisis.

Meanwhile, other countries in the region, namely Singapore and Malaysia, have dispatched vessels to support Indonesia.

Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen in a statement said, "The Republic of Singapore Navy’s MV Swift Rescue – our submarine rescue vessel – was dispatched expeditiously...as fast as she could get ready after our navy chief received a request for assistance from his Indonesian counterpart."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won't be going to Portugal and France in early May as planned, in the backdrop of increasing COVID-19 cases in the country.

Modi was to travel to Portugal for the 16th India-EU summit on May 8th, following which he was to travel to France on a bilateral visit.

India has been reporting over 250,000 Covid cases for some days, raising widespread concerns. The situation is dire in the national capital Delhi, which reported 10 deaths every one hour in the last 24 hours due to covid.

The 15th India-EU summit took place virtually amidst the Covid pandemic in July last year as the PM had to defer his Brussels visit back then.

The development comes in the backdrop of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson deferring his India visit for the second time due to Covid crisis. He was to visit India on April 25th, after having postponed the trip to the country in January to be the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations.

The India- EU summit will now take place virtually. Also, the British PM and Modi will hold talks virtually on Monday.

The European Council on Monday approved and released the European Union strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, which aims for 'regional stability, security, prosperity, and sustainable development' at a time of 'rising challenges and tensions in the region'. EU joins blocks like ASEAN, which has its own outlook on the 'Indo-Pacific' vision, strongly backed by Washington and New Delhi.

The council in its 'conclusion' statement said, "The EU intends to reinforce its role as a cooperative partner in the Indo-Pacific, bringing added-value to relations with all its partners in the region". The policy calls for developing partnerships in the areas of security and defence, including addressing maritime security, malicious cyber activities, disinformation, emerging technologies, terrorism, and organised crime.

EU sees, Indo-Pacific as a region spanning from the east coast of Africa to the Pacific island states, a region that has the world's two most populous countries, which are also huge economies, India and China. The EU strategy comes days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to Portugal for the India EU summit.

Speaking to WION, EU's envoy to India Ugo Astuto pointed to Brussel's strong commitment to the region while reaffirming ties with New Delhi.

He said the "EU and its member states have a broad relationship with partners in the Indo-Pacific, notably India", adding "the Council Conclusions adopted today strongly emphasise the EU’s commitment to the region with the aim of contributing to its stability, security, and sustainable development."

He explained, "The EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy is grounded on the values of democracy, rule of law, human rights and international law. The EU joins other partners who have declared Indo-Pacific approaches, with a view to strengthen synergies in the region towards the pursuit of global common goods."

He said the "EU and its member states have a broad relationship with partners in the Indo-Pacific, notably India", adding "the Council Conclusions adopted today strongly emphasise the EU’s commitment to the region with the aim of contributing to its stability, security, and sustainable development." He explained, "The EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy is grounded on the values of democracy, rule of law, human rights and international law. The EU joins other partners who have declared Indo-Pacific approaches, with a view to strengthen synergies in the region towards the pursuit of global common goods." Highlighting how "security challenges" have changed, India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar told United Nations Security Council that the world order built "following the Second World War is under serious stress".

He added, "Nature of threats faced by member states when the United Nations was founded 75 years ago has also changed" and is "not limited to territorial or political disputes, but transcend physical or political boundaries".

This is the third time the Indian minister has spoken at the high table since January. India became non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for two years starting January 1.

Jaishankar was speaking at an event on cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organisations.

During his address, he mentioned India's ties with groupings like ASEAN, BIMSTEC, and African Union. He called India's relationship with ASEAN a "key pillar of its foreign policy" and the "foundation of its Act East Policy".

India's vision of the Indo-Pacific as a free, open and inclusive region is based on "ASEAN centrality".

Pointing out to India's "close cooperation with the African Union", EAM said, it was aimed at "development partnership initiatives".

India has been engaging with Africa, with high-level visits. Interestingly, this year has seen the foreign ministers of Eritrea and Ethiopia visiting Delhi, with a focus on many things including a briefing on the Tigray crisis.

During the address, EAM batted for BIMSTEC grouping, saying India remained "committed to further building on the momentum of regional cooperation" under the grouping that makes it "stronger, vibrant, and more effective and result-oriented".

BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation is a more than 20 years old grouping formed in 1997 and has seven members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

In 2019, India had invited the heads of the group to the oath-taking ceremony of PM Narendra Modi for the second term.
