Terming ties with India as "close", Oman foreign minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi has said that the "sky's the limit" for the relationship between the two countries. It's 5,000 years of connection between the people of India and the people of Oman and this region, we are very much really blessed, I think, to have such a beautiful, constructive, close relationship with India."&nbsp;
Earlier this week, both Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Oman FM jointly released a logo to celebrate 70 years of ties between the two countries and a book "Mandvi to Muscat" that details the diaspora connections between the two countries. The foreign minister pointed out that the "potential for further growth and further partnership in all fields is there to be grasped by governments, by the private sector, by the young people of both countries."

Mauritius celebrates its national day on 12 March and it was on this day in 1968 that country gained its independence from the British.  In a statement in the Parliament, PM Ramgoolam said, "In the context of the celebrations of the 57th anniversary of the Independence of our country, I have great pleasure to inform the House, that following my invitation, His Excellency, Shri Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations".&nbsp;
 Amid the thunderous applause, he highlighted that it is "indeed a singular privilege for our country, to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, inspite of his very tight schedule and inspite of his recent visits to Paris and the United States. He has agreed to be here as our special guest" and the upcoming visit is a "testimony of the close relations between our two nations".

Sri Lanka's acting High commissioner to India Priyanga Wickramasinghe has emphasised "deep rooted" ties with India, one that is "bound by a common heritage of traditions". Speaking at the country's Independence day celebrations in Delhi, she said, "our bonds are deep rooted, defined by mutual respect and cooperation. Our relationship transcends mere diplomacy and geographical proximity. We are bound by a common heritage of traditions and values upon which a vision for the future and shared destiny can emerge", adding, "I'm confident that the robust ties between our peoples and the bilateral relations can only flourish further". The comments come at a time when both countries are working in a range of domains like infra projects including an oil pipeline.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited India in December of 2024, which was his first international trip after taking office in September that year.
During the visit, he met Indian President Murmu and held talks with PM Narendra Modi &amp; assured that his country's territory will not be used for any activities against India. The comments were significant in view of China's attempt to increase influence in the Indian ocean region.&nbsp;
The top Sri Lankan diplomat, recalling the visit, said, "both Indian and Sri Lankan leadership "unequivocally recognized the vast potential that our bilateral relationship holds and affirmed their commitment to this mutually beneficial, comprehensive partnership through the many avenues that lie ahead of us". During Sri Lanka's economic crisis, India provided with assistance of $4 billion even as the international community was seen hesitating. Delhi was also among the first to back Sri Lanka&rsquo;s request for a $2.9 billion IMF bailout in 2022.&nbsp;

She said it has become a "nationwide initiative with the vision to create a beautiful island and a smiling people. 'Ties with India deep rooted, bound by heritage', says Sri Lanka's top diplomat in Delhi

Bangladesh's foreign advisor Md. Touhid Hossain has termed ties with India as "close" while pointing that both countries need "mutually beneficial good relations". In the backdrop of his meeting with India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal in Muscat on the sidelines of the Indian Ocean Conference earlier this week, he said, "we both understand each other's language, and we have discussed about the coming steps that we can take to improve relations". This was the second bilateral at the foreign ministers level between the two sides since last year.&nbsp;
Asked about Dhaka's ties with Pakistan under Yunus administration, he said, "I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that (Dhaka-Islamabad ties), because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all". Pakistan-Bangladesh relations are witnessing a notable warming trend, particularly following the political shift in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s ouster in August 2024. Chief Advisor Md Yunus has met Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the sidelines of the D8 summit in Cairo even as trade has emerged as a key focus area.

Sidhant Sibal: How was your bilateral meeting with EAM Dr S Jaishankar. India has said it wants a mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh, what are the steps taken by Bangladesh on that front? Md. Touhid Hossain: Bangladesh believes that both Bangladesh and India need a mutually beneficial good relation, and the present government of Bangladesh is working to that target. I had a good meeting with Dr S Jaishankar. I believe that we both understand each other's language, and we have discussed about the coming steps that we can improve relations on. We are having some bilateral meetings ahead, for example, the border security people of both the countries are going to meet very soon. We have also proposed that there could be other mutually agreed meetings that can help us to progress with the bilateral relations. We recognize that the change that took place in July, August, threw up some uncertainties about the relations, let us accept the reality that what has happened, and we just want both sides to come out of that and follow each other's requirements and go ahead with improving relations.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: Sir, you mentioned about the steps, if perhaps you can elaborate on what are the steps which you're talking about. Md. Touhid Hossain: &nbsp;For example, we have already discussed the trade picking up already, because there was just for a short while, there was some stoppage of trade, or reduction of trade, but it has just picked up and the private sector is doing fine. We have recognized that, and at the official level, the two foreign secretaries have met, which is a positive thing, and we have also a mechanism for the next step, which is that we have a mechanism for meeting within the foreign ministers. Maybe someday we'll just go about that. These are the broad areas that we have discussed, in which all aspects of our relationship can be discussed and some decisions, some directions can come out from that.
Sidhant Sibal: Indian readout mentioned about the BIMSTEC summit. What's your view, and do you think that on the sidelines of the &nbsp;BIMSTEC &nbsp;summit, there can be a meeting between the Indian Prime Minister and the advisor, the chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus? Md. Touhid Hossain: This is going to be one meeting in which I understand that the heads of government of both the countries are going to be present at the same time. In fact, you know that there was initially a possibility of the meeting of the two in New York, but then the time did not correspond. By the time the chief adviser Md Yunus had gone there, Mr. Modi was already back in India. This is one meeting which has the advantage that all the heads of government will be there together. Second thing is that it's not too large a group. It's a relatively small group. So usually, traditionally, each of the heads of government meet each of the others, so there is an opportunity for the two of them to meet.
Sidhant Sibal: India has raised the issue of the situation of minorities in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government has said that it is not communal in nature. It is more political in nature. It is done by Awami League. We have seen the comments by the Bangladeshi Government as well. Now, what are the steps taken by your government to instill confidence when it comes to the minorities in Bangladesh? Md. Touhid Hossain: In the first place, let me propose that we come out of this minority issue, we have been having a lot of, you know, time spent on this during the last five months, particularly in the Indian media, often exaggerated, often even on pure falsehood. Let's come out of this. The minorities, I mean, the Hindus and others, are equal citizens of Bangladesh, as with the Muslims, they have equal rights. They have equal protection under the law. So we will take care of our minorities, as India has to take care of their minorities. And I don't think this should become an issue between two countries. We are there. The government is there, taking appropriate steps, the confidence is there among the minorities. &nbsp;The number of Puja Mandaps have been exponential this time, nobody had any complaint about this. So let us get out of this mindset and better let us deal with other issues, or other issues that concern our two countries. The minorities are a concern of Bangladesh, and Bangladesh is taking care of them.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: Border has also emerged as an important issue between the two countries. We know what has happened now, essentially, what is Bangladesh's view? Because there were comments suggesting that the agreement signed under the Hasina government can be relooked by Dhaka. Can you perhaps give a status update? What is the status of the Bangladeshi sides?&nbsp; Md. Touhid Hossain: As far as I am concerned, I have not come across any such proposal that the border agreement or the arrangements that we have agreed upon has to be changed. No, I haven't heard anything like that. The issue on the border is actually the BSF shooting and killing of civilians. This doesn't happen anywhere in the world. There are two friendly countries, there has been an issue that there are crimes at the border. Yes, there are crimes on every border in the world. That doesn't mean that they shoot people to kill. If anyone has broken the law, can be arrested, taken to court. The court, Indian court, what is to happen to them. But this is not done between friendly countries. That you shoot civilians on the border, even if they are committing any crime. Apart from that, the two border authorities are going to sit in a few days' time, and I'm sure that this mechanism has been working. It will work. They will just decide on how to manage the border. We want the border to be managed, and we are ready to help each other in this respect.
Sidhant Sibal: You are also engaging with other countries in the region. That is the right of every sovereign government. But talking about your relationship with Pakistan, it has substantially increased. What is the view? What are the content in the relationship, because in the previous government, the relationship was not as substantive when it comes to the current government in Dhaka and of course, Pakistan. Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, let's look at it like this. During the last few years, Pakistan was singled out for the visa system. All countries of the world were similar, and Pakistan was different, that every visa, even of a 70-year-old gentleman or lady coming, many divided families coming to see their relatives in Dhaka, had to wait months and then clearances, one after the other for the visa. This is not normal. We just look at Pakistan as just as another country. So, we think that it should be dealt with in the way that we deal with other countries also. So these are the one or two small things that are happening, but the hue and cry being created in the media about Pakistan, relation with Pakistan, I don't think that there is any substance. We are going to just normalize relations with Pakistan at par with other countries.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: I am asking this also because of the India and Pakistan relationship. You know very well, India has its own concerns regarding cross border terror from Pakistan. Now, when it comes to the Bangladesh and Pakistan relationship, Do you think that it could negatively impact India's security? Can you assure that India's security will be as it was in the past?&nbsp; Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, I do not see any possibility that the relation with Pakistan, whatever improvements we make on issues where some deliberate efforts were being made to put it down or create hindrances. We just want to remove those. And I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that, because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all.
Sidhant Sibal: So now talking about the Trump administration. What's your view about the Trump administration? We saw the visit of the Indian prime minister as well. We saw the Indian foreign secretary talking about India's concern, but not seeking your response on that, seeking your response on how do you envisage your relationship with the Trump administration in Washington? Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, the Trump administration has just come into power, and then everyone has seen that a lot of changes are taking place in their policies, and we do not know exactly what they're going to do, but as far as we are concerned, we value the relation with the US. The US is the largest market of our export products. The US is also home to a very vibrant Bangladeshi diaspora community, and they send a substantial number of remittances to help our economy. So, these are areas in which we have very important relations with the US, and we will make all efforts to continue that. If there is any change in US policy, we'll of course try to adjust to that and ensure that the maximum benefits we can derive out of that relation,
Sidhant Sibal: Sir, we recently saw the demolition of the residents of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka. This is something that obviously was seen very negatively, especially in India, given the historic relationship between India and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman not seeking response on that but seeking a response on the demolition. What's your assessment, is Bangladesh trying to distance itself from its legacy, the legacy of the Liberation War? Md. Touhid Hossain: &nbsp;Surely not, actually it was, I would not justify this, but it happened sort of as a reaction to the incendiary statements of Sheikh Hasina, who is now living in India. I would like to see a situation in which, when she is staying in India, she keeps quiet and allows things to settle down, both for Bangladesh and for our relations. The demolition is purely an internal matter. I don't think India has any reason to be concerned about that.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: But will you rebuild the residence? Because this is part of your history. This is part of your legacy, the identity of Bangladesh. Md. Touhid Hossain: I don't think the identity of Bangladesh relates to one building. Again, I'm not justifying the demolition again, I insist on that. But as I said that this is absolutely an internal matter, and then we'll deal with it as part of the law.
Sidhant Sibal: So, we know the India, Bangladesh relationship and Ramzan is coming. Usually when Ramzan comes, Bangladesh used to request for food commodities, any requests from the Bangladeshi side this time around, Md. Touhid Hossain: &nbsp;I don't think there is any special request needed. The export and imports are not a matter of request. It's the question of the business - people being interested. And their interest is, naturally, profit. So whenever and from wherever it will be profitable for the business - people in Bangladesh, they will import. And Indian exporters will export to Bangladesh if they find it to be profitable for them.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: My last question to you, it has been an extensive interview about the status of the Indian projects in Bangladesh. What is the status? How are they going about? There was a plan to connect northeast of India through Bangladeshi ports. Is it still continuing? Or is it still suspended? Md. Touhid Hossain: Well, I don't know of any suspension of any such projects, but the thing is that this is an ongoing process. There will be projects and there will be decisions which will be taken in course of time, and things will go on. Bangladesh and India are very close neighbours, friendly neighbours. So, we will continue, and we will continue to pursue relations as it is found beneficial for both the countries.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: When can we see elections in Bangladesh? Md. Touhid Hossain: I am not competent to actually say exactly when the elections will be held, because I do not know it as yet. But the point of the Bangladesh government is that the political change that took place, and the young generation, which brought about the change, have certain aspirations, they have certain views for their future. And then they want to ensure that they want some changes to take place in the political system, in the electoral system, and we are going for some, you know, changes like that. And we know that all the reforms cannot be done instantly in one day or one month, and we are not going to stay here for years and years to enact those but as I understand that the intention is to enact some of the reforms which are possible and then go for election. But in the meantime, we also want it's not the government, it's actually the young generation. They want that there should be some sort of a higher agreement among all the politicians that they are going to take care of their aspirations, the change they want.
Sidhant Sibal: A new political party? Md. Touhid Hossain: I don't know.&nbsp;

Pakistan-Bangladesh relations are witnessing a notable warming trend, particularly following the political shift in Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina’s ousting in August 2024.

Bangladesh's foreign advisor Md. Touhid Hossain has termed ties with India as "close" while pointing that both countries need "mutually beneficial good relations". In the backdrop of his meeting with India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal in Muscat on the sidelines of the Indian Ocean Conference earlier this week, he said, "we both understand each other's language, and we have discussed about the coming steps that we can take to improve relations". This was the second bilateral at the foreign ministers level between the two sides since last year. Asked about Dhaka's ties with Pakistan under Yunus administration, he said, "I don't see any reason why Indian security should be jeopardized because of that (Dhaka-Islamabad ties), because we are not going to do anything that impacts the internal security of India, no, not at all". India has said it wants a mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh, what are the steps taken by Bangladesh on that front? Md. Touhid Hossain: Bangladesh believes that both Bangladesh and India need a mutually beneficial good relation, and the present government of Bangladesh is working to that target. I had a good meeting with Dr S Jaishankar. I believe that we both understand each other's language, and we have discussed about the coming steps that we can improve relations on. We are having some bilateral meetings ahead, for example, the border security people of both the countries are going to meet very soon. We have also proposed that there could be other mutually agreed meetings that can help us to progress with the bilateral relations. We recognize that the change that took place in July, August, threw up some uncertainties about the relations, let us accept the reality that what has happened, and we just want both sides to come out of that and follow each other's requirements and go ahead with improving relations. Sidhant Sibal: Sir, you mentioned about the steps, if perhaps you can elaborate on what are the steps which you're talking about. Md. Touhid Hossain: For example, we have already discussed the trade picking up already, because there was just for a short while, there was some stoppage of trade, or reduction of trade, but it has just picked up and the private sector is doing fine. We have recognized that, and at the official level, the two foreign secretaries have met, which is a positive thing, and we have also a mechanism for the next step, which is that we have a mechanism for meeting within the foreign ministers. Maybe someday we'll just go about that. These are the broad areas that we have discussed, in which all aspects of our relationship can be discussed and some decisions, some directions can come out from that. Sidhant Sibal: Indian readout mentioned about the BIMSTEC summit. What's your view, and do you think that on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit, there can be a meeting between the Indian Prime Minister and the advisor, the chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus? Md. Touhid Hossain: This is going to be one meeting in which I understand that the heads of government of both the countries are going to be present at the same time. In fact, you know that there was initially a possibility of the meeting of the two in New York, but then the time did not correspond. By the time the chief adviser Md Yunus had gone there, Mr. Modi was already back in India. This is one meeting which has the advantage that all the heads of government will be there together. Second thing is that it's not too large a group. It's a relatively small group. So usually, traditionally, each of the heads of government meet each of the others, so there is an opportunity for the two of them to meet. Sidhant Sibal: India has raised the issue of the situation of minorities in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh government has said that it is not communal in nature. It is more political in nature. It is done by Awami League. We have seen the comments by the Bangladeshi Government as well. Now, what are the steps taken by your government to instill confidence when it comes to the minorities in Bangladesh? Md. Touhid Hossain: In the first place, let me propose that we come out of this minority issue, we have been having a lot of, you know, time spent on this during the last five months, particularly in the Indian media, often exaggerated, often even on pure falsehood. Let's come out of this. The minorities, I mean, the Hindus and others, are equal citizens of Bangladesh, as with the Muslims, they have equal rights. They have equal protection under the law. So we will take care of our minorities, as India has to take care of their minorities. And I don't think this should become an issue between two countries. We are there. The government is there, taking appropriate steps, the confidence is there among the minorities. The number of Puja Mandaps have been exponential this time, nobody had any complaint about this. India a close neighbour, says Bangladesh's Touhid; allays concerns over Pak ties

The foreign minister of Mauritius, Dhananjay Ramful, has said that India has been &ldquo;very supportive&rdquo; of his country in finalizing the Chagos deal. In October 2024, Mauritius and UK agreed to a deal on the Chagos Island under which Mauritius would gain sovereignty over the entire archipelago, including Diego Garcia, while the UK would retain control of the military base for an initial 99-year lease. Speaking to WION&rsquo;s Sidhant Sibal in Muscat on the sidelines of the Indian Ocean Conference, FM Ramful said, &ldquo;I have to stress that India has been very supportive to Mauritius in trying to finalise this deal, and they are still willing and committed to us restoring our sovereignty on the Chagos archipelago.&rdquo;
With the new Trump administration in Washington, things could see changes as the US has a base on Diego Garcia. The foreign minister pointed out, &ldquo;We also consider that it is important that the US, the new administration especially, has a new look at the deal, since the US, as I said, has an interest in the base on Diego Garcia, so we are waiting now for the US to look at the deal, and for the UK to eventually come to us and finalise the deal.&rdquo; The new Mauritian government, elected in November 2024 under Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, has pushed for better financial terms.
The foreign minister, in the interview, also appreciated India&rsquo;s development projects in his country and his recent visit to the Ayodhya Temple in Uttar Pradesh.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India-Mauritius relationship? This is a relationship which has seen a close conversation by the two leaders Dhananjay Ramful: As you must be aware, you know, the India-Mauritius relationship goes back several years ago, and over the years, we have strengthened the special relationship that we share. Now we have a new government in Mauritius, under the leadership of Navin Ramgoolam, and I am sure that this relationship will be strengthened further. As you know, we have, in the past, had a lot of exchanges with India, with regards to cultural exchanges, and India has also been helping us a lot with regards to our infrastructural projects. So I expect that this special relationship will continue to grow.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see the Indian development projects in the country? Dhananjay Ramful: There are various projects where India has been helping us through grants or loans. You have the metro project that has been implemented over several years. There is also, we are about to inaugurate the Civil Service College, which, again, was financed by the Indian government. So in various sectors be it health, education, culture. India has been always at the forefront to try and help Mauritius, and we are very grateful for that. There are also various community based projects under what they call the community, high impact community projects, where India has been financing Mauritius on several micro projects around the island. Phase one, which is, has been implemented already, and we are expecting to have a second phase, and we will be discussing with the Indian side on the second phase of the projects.
Sidhant Sibal: What about the Indian projects in Agalega island? Dhananjay Ramful: The Indian government has, as you know, financed the construction of a jetty and an air strip as well. This is very helpful to the inhabitants of Agalega. You know, we have a very small community in Agalega. And very recently, there has been a cyclone, where the Indian government was the first responder for help, and they sent a plane with provisions and all. And you see, the Indian government has helped us to construct that air strip, which allowed airplanes to go there.
Sidhant Sibal: So there&rsquo;s a lot of cultural connection, also between India and Mauritius. Any plans to visit the Kumbh Mela in India, because several Mauritian people do visit the mela, and they do visit India as well. So if you can talk about this relationship, which is a special relationship between the two countries. Dhananjay Ramful: On my side, I&rsquo;ve been on a private visit since I got elected in December, so I&rsquo;ve got a pilgrimage already to Varanasi, and I also visited the Ayodhya temple. I&rsquo;m told that a few ministers, I think the Minister of Education will be attending the Kumbh Mela.
Sidhant Sibal: Any plans for the visit of the leadership, the new leadership, to India, and will they come to the Ayodhya temple if they travel to India?&nbsp; Dhananjay Ramful: I have personally visited the Ayodhya temple. I am told various ministers under the current government, who have been there on holiday and they visited Ayodhya, it is a great initiative by the PM Modi Ji and also Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Sidhant Sibal: Recently, we saw a pact being concluded by the previous government of Mauritius with the UK on Chagos, and it was seen as a landmark in terms of perhaps resolving many issues. What is your government&rsquo;s view on that? And what do you think? Do you fear that with the Trump administration in the US, there could be pressure from Washington to make sure that there is a revisit for the entire pact. Dhananjay Ramful: You see, the issue of Chagos has been a very long battle by Mauritius and also the Chagossians community to restore the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago, including the main island, which is Diego Garcia. You will remember that we&rsquo;ve even gone to the UN where we were supported by a large majority of member states. And we even went to the International Court of Justice, where we got a ruling in our favour. And following that, there have been numerous rounds of negotiations with the UK Government to try and finalise a deal. We do realise the importance of the base, but also the UK and the US, must realise that, you know, we are in 2025 and we cannot continue to encroach on the territory of a friendly country. It&rsquo;s high time to resolve the matter. It&rsquo;s good that the UK Government has come to the table and tried to agree on a deal. The deal has been agreed between the two of us, Mauritius and the UK. Now we also consider that it is important that the US, the new administration especially, has a new look at the deal, since the US, as I said, has an interest in the base on Diego Garcia.
Sidhant Sibal: And how do you see India&rsquo;s position on Chagos? India has always backed Mauritius. India has been always at the forefront to try and help Mauritius, and we are very grateful for that. There are also various community based projects under what they call the community, high impact community projects, where India has been financing Mauritius on several micro projects around the island. Phase one, which is, has been implemented already, and we are expecting to have a second phase, and we will be discussing with the Indian side on the second phase of the projects. Sidhant Sibal: What about the Indian projects in Agalega island? Dhananjay Ramful: The Indian government has, as you know, financed the construction of a jetty and an air strip as well. This is very helpful to the inhabitants of Agalega. You know, we have a very small community in Agalega. And very recently, there has been a cyclone, where the Indian government was the first responder for help, and they sent a plane with provisions and all. And you see, the Indian government has helped us to construct that air strip, which allowed airplanes to go there. Sidhant Sibal: So there’s a lot of cultural connection, also between India and Mauritius. Any plans to visit the Kumbh Mela in India, because several Mauritian people do visit the mela, and they do visit India as well. So if you can talk about this relationship, which is a special relationship between the two countries. Dhananjay Ramful: On my side, I’ve been on a private visit since I got elected in December, so I’ve got a pilgrimage already to Varanasi, and I also visited the Ayodhya temple. I’m told that a few ministers, I think the Minister of Education will be attending the Kumbh Mela. Sidhant Sibal: Any plans for the visit of the leadership, the new leadership, to India, and will they come to the Ayodhya temple if they travel to India? Dhananjay Ramful: I have personally visited the Ayodhya temple. I am told various ministers under the current government, who have been there on holiday and they visited Ayodhya, it is a great initiative by the PM Modi Ji and also Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Sidhant Sibal: Recently, we saw a pact being concluded by the previous government of Mauritius with the UK on Chagos, and it was seen as a landmark in terms of perhaps resolving many issues. What is your government’s view on that? And what do you think? Do you fear that with the Trump administration in the US, there could be pressure from Washington to make sure that there is a revisit for the entire pact. Dhananjay Ramful: You see, the issue of Chagos has been a very long battle by Mauritius and also the Chagossians community to restore the sovereignty of Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago, including the main island, which is Diego Garcia. You will remember that we’ve even gone to the UN where we were supported by a large majority of member states. And we even went to the International Court of Justice, where we got a ruling in our favour. And following that, there have been numerous rounds of negotiations with the UK Government to try and finalise a deal. We do realise the importance of the base, but also the UK and the US, must realise that, you know, we are in 2025 and we cannot continue to encroach on the territory of a friendly country. It’s high time to resolve the matter. It’s good that the UK Government has come to the table and tried to agree on a deal. The deal has been agreed between the two of us, Mauritius and the UK. Now we also consider that it is important that the US, the new administration especially, has a new look at the deal, since the US, as I said, has an interest in the base on Diego Garcia. Sidhant Sibal: And how do you see India’s position on Chagos? India has always backed Mauritius. Dhananjay Ramful: I have to stress that India has been very supportive to Mauritius in trying to finalise this deal, and they are still willing and committed to us, restoring our sovereignty on the Chagos archipelago.

Sidhant Sibal: How important is the BIMSTEC grouping? Indra Mani Pandey: It is very important, because if you look at the Bay of Bengal, it plays a very important role in the Indian Ocean. And then, if you look at the collective strength of the seven countries, whether we look at their GDP, their population, their external trade, I think we are very important part of the world. When we look at the eastern part of the Indian Ocean, or the western part of the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal lies in the centre, as India does. Since it&rsquo;s an organisation where India enjoys the preeminent position, BIMSTEC becomes very important.
Sidhant Sibal: Can we expect the summit this year? Any planning underway? Indra Mani Pandey: Actually, the summit has already been scheduled. So it will happen in Bangkok on 4th April, and there will be a ministerial meeting a day before that on 3rd April, the ground for which will be prepared by a meeting of senior officials on 2nd April. So the schedule has been finalised, and the summit is going to be held on 4th April.
Sidhant Sibal: And what will be the focus of the summit? Indra Mani Pandey: Of course, it will have its declaration. We are going to have, perhaps, a Bangkok declaration adopted, which will define, for the first time, the BIMSTEC vision for the future. We will have a number of MOUs signed. We&rsquo;ll have the report of the Eminent Persons group adopted, and then a lot of conversations will be there about the future of BIMSTEC. There is also a possibility that we might actually sign and adopt a very important agreement on maritime transport cooperation at this summit.

Indra Mani Pandey: This summit will be very helpful because this is the first in-person summit that is taking place after 2018. The last summit in Colombo was a virtual summit. So, here the leaders would have the opportunity to have more intense conversations with one another about the future of BIMSTEC, and then they can show the direction, which will be, of course, evident in the vision that we are going to adopt and the declaration by the leaders.

Arzu Rana Deuba: We had a very good meeting, we touched on many issues, including our border areas, looking at border pillars, development of hydropower sector in Nepal &amp; we talked about trade and commerce issue particularly the BIS, Indian standard that Nepalese product will have to follow. We touched on these 3 issues.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India, Nepal issues? Any irritants in the relationship?
Arzu Rana Deuba: I don't think so, we always had very good relationship with India. We have developed very deep understanding of each other, our views about each other. So I don't think any irritants. Of course, some time, we have little hiccups, any neighbors would have that. We have always been able to have very fruitful dialogues, we have talked with each other and resolved lot of issues. Nepal is non-aligned nation and doesn't enters into strategic alliances with any country in the world. BRI is just document of understanding between Nepal, China about the development work we will be undertaking. It has references to that. We had entered the into BRI in 2017, it is just formalization and laying out how the process will forward. Nepal is very clear about the fact, that it is not in the position to take any expensive loans from any country or institutions. Chinese govt is very clear about that.&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: Nepal PM Oli visited China in his first foreign visit, when is he expected to visit India.&nbsp;

Seyed Abbas Araghchi: Iran, India enjoy very good Historic relationship. As 2 Asian civilization, we have always been in contact with each other, we continue to do so. We attach great importance to our relationship with India. There used to be lot of trade between Iran and India. There have been ups and down, strong determination between the 2 sides to strengthen ties, we continue to do so. Problems are not because of Iran, India but because of 3rd parties, we have always trying to be creative on how to tackle those problems, how India and Iran can enjoy good relationship. This time more difficult but with determination exists between the 2 sides and overcome those problems, especially in Indian Ocean area.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see cooperation on Chabahar port, especially with Trump Administration removing the special waiver for the port
Seyed Abbas Araghchi: we have 10 year agreement with India on Chabahar port. We know that there has been questions raised by the 3rd party, we know Indians are in consultations with Americans on this. So we leave it to our friends, to decide. As far as we are concerned, Chabahar port is very important port that connects India to Iran, to central Asia and other places. It has strategic importance for both of us. There is determination from both sides to work, to have cooperation especially through Chabahar. There is 10 year cooperation, so let's see how we tackle those problems.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you plan to increase people to people ties &amp; what about trading in national currencies?
Seyed Abbas Araghchi: people to people ties always there, long history between the 2 sides. Because of the sanctions we have started to do business, trade with other countries through local currency, barter system , and I think every opportunity to use that mechanism with India as well. This is upto private sectors on how to deal with this.

Iran FM Abbas Araghchi says India in touch with US on Chabahar

Indian Ambassador to Oman Amit Narang has termed Oman a 'close friend' of India and ties are 'firing on all cylinders'. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal in Muscat, Ambassador Amit Narang said, 'Oman is India's closest maritime neighbour. It takes less time to fly from Mumbai to Muscat than Mumbai to Delhi.
Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1955. Since then, the relationship has been upgraded to a strategic partnership.
Comments come ahead of the key Indian Ocean Conference in the country in which several foreign ministers including EAM Dr S Jaishankar will participate.&nbsp;
Oman will be hosting the 8th edition of the Indian Ocean Conference from February 16th to 17th. The conference is being organised by India Foundation in association with Oman's foreign ministry with the theme being "Voyages to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership". Full interview:
Sidhant Sibal: What has been the focus of this year's Indian Ocean Conference?
Amit Narang: Yes, the eighth Indian Ocean conference is being held, is being hosted here in Oman. As you are aware, the Indian Ocean conference is one of India's flagship maritime events hosted by the India foundation in association with the Ministry of External Affairs. This year, it is being hosted by the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman and Dr S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister will be here to participate in the conference and deliver a keynote address at the inaugural session. Based on my understanding, there are ministers or senior officials from at least 30 countries who are participating. So, it's a large event, getting together all the countries who have a shared interest in the management of the Indian Ocean and the shared spaces. Now, as you are aware, the maritime cooperation, or the cooperation pertaining to the oceanic spaces has been increasingly salient in international relations discussions and dialogs, whether it is your national security or international trade and commerce or even global sustainability, the oceans play a central role. And given the fact that Indian Ocean, you know, the sits around, or rather, has so many countries and continents around the Indian Ocean. You know, it's a very important facet of international dialog today, the trademark of this conference is to bring together all the relevant stakeholders, decision makers and senior officials, to foster dialogue and cooperation on the Indian Ocean and all the issues surrounding it.
Sidhant Sibal: How do you see India, Oman relationship?
Amit Narang: Oman is one of India's closest neighbours. In fact, a maritime neighbour, and the oceanic spaces on the map sometimes hide the fact how close they are to us. To just to give you a perspective, it takes less time to fly from Mumbai to Muscat than it takes to fly from Mumbai to Delhi. That's how close they are to us, and they have always been in the history, a very close maritime partner with the history between the people of India and the people of Oman go back at least 5000 years, and across this time, we have been trading with each other. So, it's a relationship which is based on trade, exchange of goods and ideas and cultures, and it's a remarkable history. And today, this old friendship stands transformed into a strategic partnership. And I must say, over the past few years, especially in the post pandemic phase, that relationship has truly come of age. And today, Oman is playing a very important role for us in this region, a close friend, a close partner, whether it comes to strategic cooperation, defense cooperation, international trade, or issues of people to people. Ties today, the relationship, India Oman relationship, I can say, is truly firing on all cylinders. Last few years have been some notable achievements under our presidency of the G20 you are aware, the Sultan of Oman was our special guest, a guest country. And the participation of the Omani side was very robust, very remarkable. More than 11 ministers participated, and the Omani delegation, they participated in more than 100 meetings all across India. That event really brought the countries together. Then in December 2023 the ruler of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, paid a state visit to India. This was the first state visit from Oman in more than 26 years. And the discussions with honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji were very, very positive, very forward looking, very comprehensive. And both the leaders adopted the India Oman joint vision document, which is now going to be the roadmap for the future.
Sidhant Sibal: So my final question this relationship, which has a strong base, that is the People to People relationship. Many Indians stay here, for them Oman is a home. If you can shed light on this relationship?
Amit Narang: In fact, the Indian diaspora truly is the highlight of the India Oman relationship. And like you said, you know people, Indians from different parts of India have been coming , visiting and staying in Oman for at least a few 1000 years. We have evidence of that. In the more recent times, there is a part of the Indian community. I mean, there are about seven lakh Indians who are currently resident in Oman, but out of those seven lakhs, there is a small portion of Indians, merchant traders, predominantly from the state of Gujarat, who have been living in this country for between 200 to 300 years. This is recorded history, and today these families are into their sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, even 10th generations and living continuously in Oman. Some of them have become Omani citizens, but they maintain links with India, they maintain their culture, they maintain their traditions, and they're living harmoniously here and contributing to the Omani society. To bring this history back has been an attempt, Government of India, as you are aware, under Prime Minister Modi, prioritizes its relationship with his diaspora, celebrates the diaspora for its achievements in line with that in Oman we made an effort to bring back this history to the people. We did a whole long lecture series running over eight months where we got academics and the people to talk about this history and this remarkable history and the heritage is now being published as part of a book which will be released very soon. Apart from that, we also realized here that this community, by virtue of being living here, they are the custodians of very important documents, photographs, you know, little pieces of evidence which give you great snippets of history on how things were in the olden times. So an attempt has been made to preserve, and I'm very happy to report that for the first time, actually, the entire documentary heritage of the diaspora has now been digitized. This is I'm talking about Oman, has been digitized as part of the portal of the National Archives of India, where a separate portal today has preserved all their documents for future generations. This documentary heritage, diaspora heritage, was presented at an exhibition and in the recently concluded Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in Bhubaneswar as well. So diaspora relationship with Oman is very important, and that is something that we are also working to bring it back to the public limelight.

Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1955. Since then, the relationship has been upgraded to a strategic partnership. Comments come ahead of the key Indian Ocean Conference in the country in which several foreign ministers including EAM Dr S Jaishankar will participate. Oman will be hosting the 8th edition of the Indian Ocean Conference from February 16th to 17th. The conference is being organised by India Foundation in association with Oman's foreign ministry with the theme being "Voyages to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership". Full interview: Sidhant Sibal: What has been the focus of this year's Indian Ocean Conference? Amit Narang: Yes, the eighth Indian Ocean conference is being held, is being hosted here in Oman. As you are aware, the Indian Ocean conference is one of India's flagship maritime events hosted by the India foundation in association with the Ministry of External Affairs. This year, it is being hosted by the Foreign Ministry of the Sultanate of Oman and Dr S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister will be here to participate in the conference and deliver a keynote address at the inaugural session. Based on my understanding, there are ministers or senior officials from at least 30 countries who are participating. So, it's a large event, getting together all the countries who have a shared interest in the management of the Indian Ocean and the shared spaces. Now, as you are aware, the maritime cooperation, or the cooperation pertaining to the oceanic spaces has been increasingly salient in international relations discussions and dialogs, whether it is your national security or international trade and commerce or even global sustainability, the oceans play a central role. And given the fact that Indian Ocean, you know, the sits around, or rather, has so many countries and continents around the Indian Ocean. The Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will be visiting India next week, from 17-18th February as both sides firm up ties in a range of areas including energy sector.&nbsp;
Qatar is India's largest supplier of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), providing over 48% of India's global LNG imports. In the fiscal year 2022-23, India's bilateral trade with Qatar was approximately US$ 18.77 billion. Qatar's Energy Minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi had visited India earlier this month for India Energy Week. During his visit, Al-Kaabi emphasised Qatar's commitment to supporting India's energy requirements.&nbsp;

Swiss State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Alexandre Fasel, has said that his country is in the process of ratifying the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) trade pact between India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries&mdash;Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Speaking to WION&rsquo;s Sidhant Sibal in Delhi, the top Swiss diplomat said, &ldquo;It is a very important agreement that has been signed. It is now in the process of ratification in Switzerland... we hope in the latter part of the year, or at the very latest, at the beginning of next year that this treaty can enter into force.&rdquo;

The pact aims to reduce tariffs, boost trade, and promote investments between the regions. Under the pact, EFTA countries have committed to invest $100 billion in India over 15 years, with $50 billion expected within the first 10 years and another $50 billion in the next 5 years. India is Switzerland&rsquo;s fourth largest trading partner in Asia and the largest in South Asia.
When asked about India&rsquo;s role in supporting peace when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Swiss diplomat said, &ldquo;India is a very important player geopolitically, as Prime Minister Modi said, India has the ambition to resonate the voice of the global south in many different questions geopolitically, and certainly in this one as well. And India has been involved in all the discussions and processes that have led to the first peace conference in Switzerland, so yes, India is much involved in all those conversations.&rdquo; Last year, Switzerland hosted the Peace Summit for Ukraine, which saw representations from 92 countries, including India. The main objective of the summit was to discuss elements of Ukraine&rsquo;s 10-point peace formula, focusing on nuclear safety and food security.

The Swiss State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Alexandre Fasel, was in Delhi for foreign office consultations with his Indian counterpart, secretary west, Tanmay Lal. The talks focused on the situation in South Asia and Ukraine, multilateralism, Switzerland&rsquo;s experience in the Security Council, and Switzerland&rsquo;s work in the Human Rights Council.
Sidhant Sibal: What was your key focus during your India visit? Alexandre Fasel: That was the annual political consultations we have amongst foreign ministries, and I came to meet my colleague, Secretary West, Tanmay Lal. And this was a very wide-ranging conversation. Traditionally, in that type of consultation, you discuss bilateral matters but also multilateral matters, global issues, and regional questions of a geopolitical and geostrategic order. So it was a very comprehensive, wide-ranging exchange, very fruitful and stimulating indeed.
Sidhant Sibal: How can Switzerland help India in terms of sustainability? Alexandre Fasel: We are indeed focusing on sustainability in our activities here in India, together with the authorities, the private sector, and also the academic sector of India. We&rsquo;re doing very different things, many different things. One is a public diplomacy programme we are launching, which we call sustainability with a plus, where we try to bring together the actors in the service of sustainability, it is indeed a challenge to keep the sustainability agenda on track and to capitalize on this shared sense of purpose we have amongst our two countries and the capabilities our actors, academic, political, and business from our two countries, can bring together to further the course of sustainability.
Sidhant Sibal: Any update on TEPA pact, especially on ratification. Switzerland removed MFN status for India, any details? Alexandre Fasel: TEPA pact is a really big, quantum leap in our relationship. The Free Trade Agreement between India and the EFTA countries, that will condition our bilateral relationship for at least 15 years to come. There will be a huge influx of investment from those European countries, and certainly Switzerland, into India. There will be a very considerable job creation by Switzerland and the other European partners of EFTA in India. So it is a very important agreement that has been signed. It is now in the process of ratification in Switzerland. As you know, Switzerland&rsquo;s parliament is a bicameral system. So in the first chamber, the agreement was already passed, and it should pass in the second chamber now in the spring session in March, then there is a delay to see whether we have a referendum in Switzerland, every international agreement, every law, is subject to a referendum. So we need to see whether there will be a referendum or not. And then we hope in the latter part of the year, or at the very latest, at the beginning of next year that this treaty can enter into force, which will then really be a new dawning in our already very close and fruitful relationship. And the question you refer to about the most favoured nation (MFN) clause has nothing to do with TEPA. So, this free trade treaty will develop and deploy its effect. And this question is a question of fiscality and is entirely unrelated to it. And it&rsquo;s not a withdrawal of the most favoured nation clauses through Switzerland. It is Switzerland&rsquo;s adapting to the Indian reading of what the most favourite nation clause in this particular context.
Sidhant Sibal: So when it comes to India and Switzerland, focus has been also on innovation, on startups and perhaps AI. How both countries are collaborating on these three areas, something that has been quite emerging. How Switzerland can help in these three areas. Alexandre Fasel: We are partners in that domain as well. When it comes to science, to technology, emerging technology that are rooted in cutting-edge science, emerging science, then it is important that, as an international community, we come together, we capitalize on the capabilities our scientists and researchers have to make sense of what science and technology will allow us to do as an international community, and use those progresses in science and technology for the global commons and for a good and equitable development. And that is a domain we&rsquo;re working closely on. I can name one example. We call it GESDA. That means Geneva, Science and Diplomacy Anticipated. This was created in Geneva to capture emerging science and accelerate the conversation of states, business, scientists, and civil society around those questions. They have an annual summit on a ministerial level, in which India participated through its chief scientific adviser of the ministry last October. So that is a concrete example of us coming together to do the right thing.
Sidhant Sibal: And where do you see India&rsquo;s role in terms of the Ukraine situation? Do you see India playing some role now? Because it looks like the situation is towards its last leg. In terms of the war which is underway. Alexandre Fasel: We will see whether it is the last leg, I fear it will be a very long process. So we certainly need all the energies and goodwill of all the nations who can contribute, and certainly of India. India is a very important player geopolitically, as Prime Minister Modi said, India has the ambition to resonate the voice of the global south in many different questions geopolitically, and certainly in this one as well. When asked about India’s role in supporting peace when it comes to the Russia-Ukraine war, the Swiss diplomat said, “India is a very important player geopolitically, as Prime Minister Modi said, India has the ambition to resonate the voice of the global south in many different questions geopolitically, and certainly in this one as well. And India has been involved in all the discussions and processes that have led to the first peace conference in Switzerland, so yes, India is much involved in all those conversations.” Last year, Switzerland hosted the Peace Summit for Ukraine, which saw representations from 92 countries, including India. The main objective of the summit was to discuss elements of Ukraine’s 10-point peace formula, focusing on nuclear safety and food security. Also read | India signs key pact with Panama for Quick Impact Projects The Swiss State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Alexandre Fasel, was in Delhi for foreign office consultations with his Indian counterpart, secretary west, Tanmay Lal. The talks focused on the situation in South Asia and Ukraine, multilateralism, Switzerland’s experience in the Security Council, and Switzerland’s work in the Human Rights Council. Sidhant Sibal: What was your key focus during your India visit? Alexandre Fasel: That was the annual political consultations we have amongst foreign ministries, and I came to meet my colleague, Secretary West, Tanmay Lal. And this was a very wide-ranging conversation. Traditionally, in that type of consultation, you discuss bilateral matters but also multilateral matters, global issues, and regional questions of a geopolitical and geostrategic order. So it was a very comprehensive, wide-ranging exchange, very fruitful and stimulating indeed. Sidhant Sibal: How can Switzerland help India in terms of sustainability? Alexandre Fasel: We are indeed focusing on sustainability in our activities here in India, together with the authorities, the private sector, and also the academic sector of India. We’re doing very different things, many different things. One is a public diplomacy programme we are launching, which we call sustainability with a plus, where we try to bring together the actors in the service of sustainability, it is indeed a challenge to keep the sustainability agenda on track and to capitalize on this shared sense of purpose we have amongst our two countries and the capabilities our actors, academic, political, and business from our two countries, can bring together to further the course of sustainability. Sidhant Sibal: Any update on TEPA pact, especially on ratification. Switzerland removed MFN status for India, any details? Alexandre Fasel: TEPA pact is a really big, quantum leap in our relationship. The Free Trade Agreement between India and the EFTA countries, that will condition our bilateral relationship for at least 15 years to come. There will be a huge influx of investment from those European countries, and certainly Switzerland, into India. There will be a very considerable job creation by Switzerland and the other European partners of EFTA in India. So it is a very important agreement that has been signed. It is now in the process of ratification in Switzerland. As you know, Switzerland’s parliament is a bicameral system. So in the first chamber, the agreement was already passed, and it should pass in the second chamber now in the spring session in March, then there is a delay to see whether we have a referendum in Switzerland, every international agreement, every law, is subject to a referendum. So we need to see whether there will be a referendum or not. And then we hope in the latter part of the year, or at the very latest, at the beginning of next year that this treaty can enter into force, which will then really be a new dawning in our already very close and fruitful relationship. And the question you refer to about the most favoured nation (MFN) clause has nothing to do with TEPA. So, this free trade treaty will develop and deploy its effect. And this question is a question of fiscality and is entirely unrelated to it. And it’s not a withdrawal of the most favoured nation clauses through Switzerland. It is Switzerland’s adapting to the Indian reading of what the most favourite nation clause in this particular context. Sidhant Sibal: So when it comes to India and Switzerland, focus has been also on innovation, on startups and perhaps AI. How both countries are collaborating on these three areas, something that has been quite emerging. How Switzerland can help in these three areas. Alexandre Fasel: We are partners in that domain as well. When it comes to science, to technology, emerging technology that are rooted in cutting-edge science, emerging science, then it is important that, as an international community, we come together, we capitalize on the capabilities our scientists and researchers have to make sense of what science and technology will allow us to do as an international community, and use those progresses in science and technology for the global commons and for a good and equitable development. And that is a domain we’re working closely on. I can name one example. We call it GESDA. That means Geneva, Science and Diplomacy Anticipated. This was created in Geneva to capture emerging science and accelerate the conversation of states, business, scientists, and civil society around those questions. They have an annual summit on a ministerial level, in which India participated through its chief scientific adviser of the ministry last October. So that is a concrete example of us coming together to do the right thing. Sidhant Sibal: And where do you see India’s role in terms of the Ukraine situation? Do you see India playing some role now? Because it looks like the situation is towards its last leg. In terms of the war which is underway. Alexandre Fasel: We will see whether it is the last leg, I fear it will be a very long process. So we certainly need all the energies and goodwill of all the nations who can contribute, and certainly of India.
