He was speaking at a Congressional Reception at Capitol Hill hosted by the co-chairs of the Senate India caucus and Congressional caucus on India and Indian-Americans Senator John Cornyn, Senator Mark Warner, Congressman Brad Sherman and Congressman George Holding.

The event was attended by an unprecedented 67 members of Congress, including Senators.

Recalling the "sterling role" played by the India caucus in "getting us past the finish line" on the civil nuclear agreement, the ambassador Shringla said,"the designation of India as a major defence partner was also codified into law by the US Congress in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017, thanks to the unstinting support of the members of the India caucus."

In the US House of Representatives, the India caucus was founded in 1993 by Congressman Frank Pallone of New Jersey and Congressman Bill McCollum of Florida.

In the Senate, the caucus was founded by Senator Cornyn and Senator Hillary Clinton in 2004. The bi-partisan India caucus is the largest country-specific caucus at the Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Talking about India-US ties, Shringla said, since 2008, the US has "bagged more than $18 billion in arms contracts with India including the C-17 Globemaster and C-130J transport planes, P-8 (I) maritime reconnaissance aircraft, M777 light-weight howitzer, Harpoon missiles and Apache and Chinook helicopters."

Private airlines in India has placed orders for 300 Boeing aircraft to be delivered over next 5 to 7 years whose total cost will be $39 billion and create 130,000 American Jobs. India has already started the import of US crude and natural gas worth $ 4.5 billion every year.

On geopolitics, ambassador Shringla said, India and US are "working closely in the Indo-Pacific including with our partners Japan and Australia" and in "Afghanistan, we have invested $3 billion for economic development and reconstruction efforts that are essential to bringing lasting peace and stability to the country."

The bilateral trade between India and the US currently stand at $140 billion with US exports to India growing around two-and-a-half times faster than Indian exports to the US.

In November 2018, India and China signed a protocol for the export of Indian fishmeal/fish oil to China.

Last month, on January 21 and 22, both the countries renewed and signed the protocol on the export of Indian tobacco, making way for the exports of Indian tobacco to China.&nbsp;

The growth of Indian exports to China has been driven by marine products, organic chemicals, plastics, petroleum products, grapes and rice. Indian exports to China between April-December 2018 stood at $12.7 billion.

China and India have been keen on engaging bilaterally especially on the trade front. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met four times last year. India in talks with China for early announcement of Chinese import quotas

India-US Commercial Dialogue and US-India CEO Forum will take place in Delhi on February 14.

US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will visit the national capital next week to take part in the dialogue and the CEO Forum. He, along with Commerce minister Suresh Prabhu, will co-chair the forum.

Speaking on US-India CEO Forum, US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said, "The US-India CEO Forum is critical to the fruitful commercial relationship and strong economic ties between our two great nations”.

He said the incoming US CEOs will "bring fresh perspectives to the forum" and "help us consider new opportunities to further deepen our cooperation”.

The CEO forum was established in 2005. US CEOs serve a two-year term&nbsp;and are selected from respondents to a US Federal Register Notice calling for CEO-level applicants to the US Section of the forum.&nbsp;

Around 19 people from the US private sector will take part in the US-India CEO Forum. These include Ajay Banga, CEO of MasterCard; Sanjay Bhatnagar, CEO, WaterHealth International; John Chambers, Chairman Emeritus, Cisco Systems and Deepak Chopra, CEO of OSI Systems.

The dialogue is taking place when the US President has been raising the issue of high tariff by India and even called India "tariff king".&nbsp;

Last month Trump boasted of how his call to India helped bring tariff down in "two minutes". He said, "Look at motorcycles as an example. (In) India, it was 100 per cent. I got them down to 50 per cent, <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/cut-on-motorcycle-tariffs-by-india-fair-deal-trump-192625">just by talking for about two minutes</a>. It's still 50 per cent vs 2.4 per cent (on imported motorcycles to the US). Again, other than that, it's a very fair deal."

India has assured Bangladesh of its continued support with respect to the repatriation of Rohingya refugees. Both the countries have called for safe and sustainable repatriation of the refugees.&nbsp;

Bangladesh's&nbsp;foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen is in Delhi on a 4-day visit and took part in the fifth meeting of the India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Commission. The meeting was co-chaired by India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday.&nbsp;

The joint press release noted, "External Affairs Minister expressed appreciation for the humanitarian gesture of Bangladesh in supporting a large number of displaced persons from the Rakhine region of Myanmar" and "assured the Foreign Minister of India’s continued support for safe, speedy and sustainable return of the displaced persons to Myanmar".

Bangladesh's foreign minister conveyed his country's gratitude for the humanitarian assistance provided by India in four tranches since September 2017 to help meet the requirements of the displaced persons from Myanmar.

This is the first high-level visit from PM Hasina's government after her electoral victory in December 2018.

The release added, the two ministers agreed on the need to "expedite, safe and sustainable repatriation" of the displaced people from the Rakhine state of Myanmar.

India has been calling on Myanmar to implement the Rohingya repatriation accord that it signed with Bangladesh. The agreement involves the return of the refugees to Myanmar.

India started 'Operation Insaniyat' to help Rohingya refugees in September 2017. In December 2018, India began the 4th tranche of relief assistance to Rohingya refugees camping in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar.&nbsp;

Bangladeshi foreign minister Momen had called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday during which the Rohingya issue was also raised. PM Modi assured India's support to the neighbouring country.

India has already shared with Pakistan the coordinates of the corridor's zero or crossing point along the International Border.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, speaking to the Pakistani media, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria called the Kartarpur corridor a "corridor of faith" that will build trust between the two countries. "I am certain this vision will drive the relationship between India and Pakistan," he said.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the second inter-agency meet on the Kartarpur corridor took place at the home ministry. The meet was chaired by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and attended by the Punjab chief secretary, Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria and BSF Director General RK Misra.

India will be sending Pakistan a draft proposal on the corridor very soon, even as the process of land acquisition for the corridor gathers pace.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Punjab Chief Secretary Karan Avtar Singh said, "We are hopeful that we will send the draft proposal to Pakistan and complete legal modalities within a month."

India and Pakistan approved the building of the Kartarpur corridor last year so that Indian pilgrims could easily visit the Kartarpur gurudwara in Pakistan to celebrate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak this year. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, lived for 18 years at Kartarpur gurudwara.&nbsp;

The US State Department has approved sale of <a href="http://www.wionews.com/world/us-army-to-buy-israels-iron-dome-missile-defence-system-195689">two Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures</a> (LAIRCM) Self Protection Suites (SPS) for Boeing aircraft to be used in India at an estimated cost of $190 million.&nbsp;

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has been asked by the State Department to issue the required certificate notifying the US Congress about the sale. Once the US Senate approves the deal, the deal will enter into the negotiation stage and then the sale will be concluded. The prime contractor will be Boeing Company, Oklahoma City, US.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said, "The government of India has requested to buy two Self-Protection Suites (SPS) consisting of AN/AAQ 24(V)N Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM), ALQ-211(V)8 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suite (AIDEWS), and AN/ALE-47 Counter-Measures Dispensing System (CMDS) to protect two (2) Boeing-777 Head-of-State aircraft."

While approving the deal, Pentagon's DSCA said that the "proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship" and to "improve the security of a major defensive partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region."

The department added,"the proposed sale will improve<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/chinas-missile-defense-system-for-pakistan-aimed-at-indias-brahmos-missile-37014"> India's capability to deter regional threats</a>" with the SPS facilitating "a more robust capability into areas of increased missile threats."

The sale will include - 12 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies (6 installed and 6 spares), 8 LAIRCM System Processor Replacements (2 installed and 6 spares, 23 Missile Warning Sensors (12 installed and 11 spares) and five Counter-Measures Dispensing System (2 installed and 3 spares).

The department also assured that the sale will not "alter the basic military balance in the region".

The&nbsp;US is the second-largest arms supplier to India. Washington has already recognised India as a "major defence partner", a status that which commits the US to facilitate technology sharing with India.

Pentagon's Missile defence review (MDR) 2019 had mentioned that the United States has been discussing "potential missile defence cooperation" with India.

In 2018, US granted India Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) status. India is the only South Asian country to get STA1 status and third Asian country after Japan and South Korea. The status eases defence procurement from US. Last year both New Delhi and Washington signed COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement).

The COMCASA deal happened despite fears that the US might slow defence engagement with New Delhi after the India-Russia S400 air defence system deal in October last year.

The US State Department has approved sale of two Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) Self Protection Suites (SPS) for Boeing aircraft to be used in India at an estimated cost of $190 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has been asked by the State Department to issue the required certificate notifying the US Congress about the sale. Once the US Senate approves the deal, the deal will enter into the negotiation stage and then the sale will be concluded. The prime contractor will be Boeing Company, Oklahoma City, US. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said, "The government of India has requested to buy two Self-Protection Suites (SPS) consisting of AN/AAQ 24(V)N Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM), ALQ-211(V)8 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suite (AIDEWS), and AN/ALE-47 Counter-Measures Dispensing System (CMDS) to protect two (2) Boeing-777 Head-of-State aircraft." While approving the deal, Pentagon's DSCA said that the "proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship" and to "improve the security of a major defensive partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region." The department added,"the proposed sale will improve India's capability to deter regional threats" with the SPS facilitating "a more robust capability into areas of increased missile threats." The sale will include - 12 Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies (6 installed and 6 spares), 8 LAIRCM System Processor Replacements (2 installed and 6 spares, 23 Missile Warning Sensors (12 installed and 11 spares) and five Counter-Measures Dispensing System (2 installed and 3 spares). The department also assured that the sale will not "alter the basic military balance in the region". The US is the second-largest arms supplier to India. Washington has already recognised India as a "major defence partner", a status that which commits the US to facilitate technology sharing with India. Pentagon's Missile defence review (MDR) 2019 had mentioned that the United States has been discussing "potential missile defence cooperation" with India. In 2018, US granted India Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) status. India is the only South Asian country to get STA1 status and third Asian country after Japan and South Korea. The status eases defence procurement from US. Last year both New Delhi and Washington signed COMCASA (Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement). The COMCASA deal happened despite fears that the US might slow defence engagement with New Delhi after the India-Russia S400 air defence system deal in October last year.

Foreign Affairs Minister of Bangladesh Dr AK Abdul Momen who is on a four-day visit to India called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
