Jagdeep Dhankhar was elected the new vice president of India after winning the election by a landslide margin against the opposition candidate Margaret Alva on Saturday. The NDA-backed candidate won the poll by 346 votes.

Dhankhar&nbsp;received&nbsp;support from MPs from both houses of the parliament, including those belonging to NDA and a number of regional parties, namely YSRCP, BJD, TDP, BSP, AIADMK and the Shiv Sena.

“NDA candidate Jagdeep Dhankar won by 346 votes as he bagged 528 of the total 725 votes that were cast. While 15 votes were termed invalid, the Opposition candidate Margret Alva received 182 votes in the election," said Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh, who was also the returning officer for the polls.

The opposition candidate never looked in a position to win the election and Alva’s campaign was affected further by TMC’s decision to abstain from voting citing absence of understanding.

Born in 1951, Dhankhar graduated in physics from Maharaja's College in Jaipur and went on to get his LLB degree from Jaipur University in 1978-79. After finishing his education, he enrolled with the Bar Council of Rajasthan and made his career as an advocate. He ended up practicing law&nbsp;in Rajasthan High Court before getting elected to Lok Sabha from Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan in 1990.

In his political career, he went on to become a Union Minister in 1990 and also a Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs. He was also a member of the Vidhan Sabha from 1993 to 1998.

While he joined Congress during PV Narsimha Rao’s stint as the prime minister, he came back to the BJP due to his connections with Vasundhara Raje and other prominent members of the party.

Dhankhar was till recently the Governor of West Bengal but since his appointment in 2019, he had been at loggerheads with chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Over the last three years, the two clashed publicly and Dhankhar openly criticised the state government for law-and-order problems.

The zoo has said that the potential buyers need to register with proper authorities before they are allowed to bid, and they will have to show proof that they can take care of the animals.

“Once an institution such as a zoo places a price tag on a wildlife species it is promoting trade — which is counterproductive to conservation,” the official statement for the organisation added.

Spain announces limits on air conditioning and heating but Madrid's leader will have nothing of it

Kidambi Srikanth came up with an underwhelming performance as India succumbed 1-3 to Malaysia and settled for a silver in the mixed team badminton event at the Commonwealth Games here on Tuesday.

With the win, Malaysia regained the title they had lost to India four years ago in Gold Coast.

For India to retain gold, a lot depended on the outcome of the men's doubles tie featuring Rankireddy and Shetty, and, the Olympic bronze medallists duo of Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh.

Sindhu led 11-6 in the first game but Goh looked a different player after the interval. She made the former world champion run around the court with her skillful net play. Goh made a strong comeback to take the game till the very end.

Sindhu ended a rally with a forehand smash on Goh's left to make it 21-20 before the Malaysian netted a return. 
Goh's continued with similar tactics in the second game as well, trying to bring Sindhu close to the net. However, Sindhu was up for the task as she took an 11-7 lead in the second game.

Goh closed the gap after the interval but Sindhu was able to finish the game comfortably on this occasion. It was a gruelling affair and Goh gave her all on court including the last point when she fell on the floor. The final scoreline read 22-20 and 21-17

World number 14 Srikanth came up with a flat performance in the men's singles.The 42-ranked Tze Yong Ng took the first game off Srikanth for the first time in three meetings to raise hopes of an upset,

The Indian then ran away with the second game to level the match.

In the decider, Tze led 11-9 at the interval after couple of unforced errors from the Indian. It became 16-12 with Srikanth unable to match Tze's net play.

Ahead of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China positioned a number of warships near the line dividing the Taiwan Strait and the country’s foreign ministry went on to call the visit “extremely dangerous”.
