UEFA Europa League 2023 LIVE: When & where to watch Round of 16 matches-Check the team list

A personal dispute between golfer Tiger Woods and his apparent ex-girlfriend, Erica Herman has spilt into a Florida court. The duo broke up in October and Woods allegedly locked her out of the seaside mansion they shared on the Treasure Coast. The former girlfriend, Herman responded by filing a lawsuit, not against the golf legend but against a homestead trust he controls in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Herman is now claiming damages of more than $30 million and said the trust and its agents misappropriated $40,000 cash that belonged to her, making “scurrilous and defamatory allegations about how she obtained the money”. In her court filing, Herman said that she has the right to talk as given under the Speak Out Act.

Under the Speak Out Act, which President Joe Biden signed a law in December, non-disclosure and non-disparagement documents are not enforceable when sexual assault and/or sexual harassment comes after such agreements are entered into.

Herman and Woods made their first public appearance in 2017 at the President’s Cup in September. Since that first appearance, Herman became a constant spectator at the course whenever Woods was competing. Though the couple otherwise used to remain low-key over the years. This was different from Wood’s previous relationships with Lindsey Vonn and his very public marriage and divorce from Elin Nordegren.

The couple was rarely seen out in public other than at golf events. The first nom-golf appearance by the couple was at the 2022 US Open when they together came to support Serena Williams from the stands. Herman was only seen on Wood’s Instagram as she herself has no social media presence at all.

In addition to accompanying Woods on the course, she was spotted attending the opening ceremonies with the US team’s wives and girlfriends, according to Golf.com.

A month later, the couple made things official on Instagram when Woods shared a photo of the two at Dodger Stadium for a World Series game. The photo posted on the golfer’s Instagram showed Woods and Herman twining with Dodgers jerseys.

Herman later moved into Woods’ Jupiter, Florida mansion. Herman spent her entire childhood in Florida and didn’t move only because of Woods. She grew up in Palm Beach County and attended Santaluces High School in the early 2000s. In school, she was a member of the cheerleading team.

It was there that Herman began working directly with Woods.

Who is Erica Herman? Ex-girlfriend of Tiger Woods, when did they meet & how things went wrong?

Tibetan Uprising Day commemorates the fighting spirit of the people of Tibet against the tyranny and oppression of China. The day remembers the 1959 event when a revolt erupted in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The initial uprising which started on March 10 was the result of Chinese-Tibetan tensions that further led to anti-Chinese sentiments in the region.

It started as a peaceful protest, which then snowballed into heavy quelling by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), and ended with the escape of the 14th Dalai Lama from Lhasa. This changed the city of Lhasa forever. It was fully captured by Chinese security forces on March 23, 1959, and thousands of Tibetans were killed.

As Tibetans mark the March 10 anniversary of the uprising and observe the day with the Tibetan diaspora, WION spoke to the General Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, Sonam Tsering.

Tibetan Youth Congress is the largest international pro-independence organisation with more than 30,000 Tibetans as its members. It was founded in October 1970 in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, with the 14th Dalai Lama delivering its inaugural address.

In 2023, China still continue to persecute ‘pure Tibetans’

Ahead of the annual observance of the March 10 uprising, Janet Rice, a Senator in the Australian Parliament presented a report that claimed that the Chinese authorities continue to persecute Tibetans for their culture and beliefs. Even after six decades, in 2023, Chinese authoritarianism over Tibetans, both inside and outside Tibet, is an undeniable fact. And this persecution is not disorganised, but a systematic abuse of power by China.

“The Chinese Communist Regime systematically introduced and implemented many hard-line policies primarily aimed to eliminate Tibetan culture and its identity,” Sonam Tsering told WION.

“One of them is the colonial Boarding School, and the goal of this school is entirely political. It aims to cut off the students' bond with their families, dissecting their cultures, and instilling new mindsets and agendas of the Chinese Communist Regime. CCP forcefully enrol Tibetan students in colonial boarding schools, where they have no access to Tibetan culture-related curriculum activities,” Sonam said.

According to a report titled ‘Separated from their families, hidden from the World’ by the Tibet Action Institute, nearly one million Tibetan children, aged between 4 to 18 are currently forcibly enrolled in Chinese colonial boarding schools in Tibet, away from their families.

China is trying to create a rift among Tibetans

The Chinese are going the British way and using the old tactic of ‘divide-and-rule’ to create a rift among the Tibetans through various methods.

Sonam said that China is trying all means “either through the Chinese agents’ infiltration into the Tibetan community, or through the spies and hackers who spread misinformation on social media”.

China's fear of Tibetan unity is real, as it tries hard to build a narrative that suits its political purpose. Sonam shared one such false narrative-building practice by the Chinese authorities. During a live webinar by the Tibetan Youth Congress on His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the video was viewed by 10,000 and more than 5,000 comments were received within an hour.

“Later, with the support of our technical team, we knew that all the negative comments are received from one particular region in China. Therefore, CCP is not only posing a threat to the Tibetan community alone, but they are also posing a cyber security threat to the rest of the world”.

Tibet is Asia’s issue

Whenever we talk about Tibet, it seems like a thing of the past, something that happened in history about which no one talks in 2023.

It might give a perception to some that the world has forgotten the cause of Tibet, but it is very much living, present and ubiquitous. The world might neglect Tibet, but its immediate neighbourhood, Asia is directly affected by Tibet’s sovereignty, Sonam pointed out.

Sonam emphasised that “the future security of many Asian countries lies with the sovereignty of Tibet, whether it’s water security or national security of these nations that China continues to threaten.”

“The independence of Tibet ensures a permanent peace for India and other Asian nations,” he added.

India: Second home for Tibetans

The relations between Tibet and India are as old as the 7th and 8th centuries AD. Scholars like Buton Rinchen Drub have suggested that Tibetans are descendants of Rupati, a Kaurava military general from the historical Kurukshetra War. Another common and one of the most prominent threads between the two regions is the teachings of Buddhism.

But in 1959, when Dalai Lama came to India following the uprising, India became like a second home for Tibetans-in-exile. Talking about India, Sonam said, “Can’t ask more from India, our second home that sheltered us for the last six decades”.

With India’s growing stature on the world stage, it is India’s responsibility to highlight the issue of Tibet and becomes the voice of the people, Sonam said.

“India should lead the other Asian nations in resolving the Sino-Tibet conflict with a firm political stand that benefits the long-term national interest of India and the rest of the South Asian nations.”

The Sino-Tibet conflict is a matter of India’s permanent peace and to entire region’s stability as well. Sonam reminded us that “Tibet is dying a silent and slow death under China's repressive rule“.

It is hence everyone’s responsibility and the Indian government’s in particular to speak on the current critical situation inside Tibet.

World looks at Tibet as if they are looking at a dragon fruit

On a poignant note, Sonam described what it means to be a Tibetan. “The saddest thing about being a Tibetan refugee is that there is nothing around you that you own, and even the heart deep inside your chest chooses to run away to the homeland every now and then.”

He presented a thought-provoking analogy of how the world looks at Tibet. “The world is looking at Tibet as if they are looking at a dragon fruit. They know the historical status of Tibet and its current critical situation, but they lack the courage to speak up for same. It is as if they avoid eating the flavourful fruit because of the thorns”.

The Tibetan issue is not just about China persecuting Tibetans, it is also about the existence of a buffer state that ensures peace in Asia, pointed out Sonam. Its culture, beliefs and human values are a gift to the entire world, which needs to be preserved.

World looks at Tibet as if they are looking at a dragon fruit On a poignant note, Sonam described what it means to be a Tibetan. “The saddest thing about being a Tibetan refugee is that there is nothing around you that you own, and even the heart deep inside your chest chooses to run away to the homeland every now and then.” He presented a thought-provoking analogy of how the world looks at Tibet. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has been hospitalised after he tripped at a Washington DC hotel, a spokesman told US media. No further detail about his condition was shared. The 81-year-old McConnell is currently serving a 7th term in the Senate. "Leader McConnell tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner," the spokesman said.

McConnell was attending a private dinner at a local hotel when he tripped. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment, spokesman Doug Andres said. He is one of the most senior lawmakers in the Republican Party, now serving as Senate Minority leader. The incident was first reported by the website Punchbowl News.

Mitch McConnell: The Senate Republican leader

Addison Mitchell McConnell is an American politician and retired attorney serving his seventh term as the senior US senator from Kentucky. McConnell is the Senate leader of the Republican Party, having served as minority leader since 2021 and previously from 2007 to 2015, and as majority leader from 2015 to 2021.

He worked to withhold Republican support for major presidential initiatives during the Barack Obama administration, having made frequent use of the filibuster and blocked many of President Obama's judicial nominees, including Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

In August 2019, the GOP leader, a survivor of childhood polio, tripped and fell at his home in Kentucky, suffering a shoulder fracture. At the time, he underwent surgery to repair the fracture in his shoulder.

During the Trump administration, McConnell played a pivotal role in the passing of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts of 2017. He is also responsible for the Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protected Act in 2018, the First Step Act and confirmed a record number of federal appeals court judges during a president’s first two years.

He also invoked the ‘nuclear option’ to eliminate the 60-vote requirement to end a filibuster for Supreme Court nominations, after his predecessor Harry Reid had previously eliminated the filibuster for all other presidential nominations.

While McConnell supported many of Trump's domestic and foreign policies, he was critical of Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, and despite voting to acquit Trump on his second impeachment trial for reasons related to the constitutionality of impeaching a former president, he deemed Trump "practically and morally responsible" for the January 6 United States Capitol attack.

This is a developing story.

US' new move on F-1 visas: How Indian students can benefit from premium processing of work authorisation

Hybrid solar eclipse 2023: A hybrid solar eclipse will happen next month. It will take place on April 20, astronomers are calling it Ningaloo solar eclipse. While it will not be visible to viewers in India, it can be seen through live streams of the event taken from Western Australia.

The solar eclipse will be hybrid in nature as it will be a combination of an annular eclipse and a total solar eclipse. After the occurrence of the hybrid solar eclipse, only one more solar eclipse will be visible this year, on October 14. During an annular eclipse, the Moon will not fully cover the Sun and as a result, it will appear as a dark disk superimposed on the bright Sun.

What is a hybrid solar eclipse?

A hybrid solar eclipse is a unique type of eclipse which is a combination of an annular eclipse and a total solar eclipse. People will be able to see the Sun in a ring shape and only for a few seconds. This shape of the sun is called a ‘ring of fire’ and such kind of eclipse is produced when the moon’s shadow moves across Earth, making it a transition to another.

Normally, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes in between the Earth and the Sun, forming a shadow on Earth’s surface. This hybrid solar eclipse will be occurring after 2013 and will be the last one until 2031.

Hybrid Solar Eclipse: Time and date

The first solar eclipse of this year will occur on 20 April 2023. People will witness a partial solar eclipse on the day. The next Solar eclipse of the year will occur on October 14. The second one will be an annual solar eclipse.

As per the Indian Standard Time (IST), the solar eclipse can be seen at 7:04 am and end at 12:29 pm. The rare solar eclipse will be visible from Australia, East and South Asia, the Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, and the Indian Ocean.

Where can I watch the hybrid solar eclipse?

The solar eclipse will not be visible in India but only in parts of South East Asia and Australia. During the hybrid solar eclipse, the 'annual ring of fire' eclipse will be visible for a few seconds in the Indian and Pacific oceans but not anywhere on land. On the other hand, a total eclipse will only be visible in three locations on land including Exmouth, Western Australia, Timor Leste and West Papua, according to space.com.

How to look at a hybrid solar eclipse carefully?

Watch by projecting Sun’s image on a whiteboard by using a Telescope. One can use eye filters like black polymer, aluminized Mylar, or welding glass of shade number 14 to observe the solar eclipse. It is not safe to witness the eclipse directly.

Hybrid solar eclipse 2023: A sight for sore eyes- Check when and where it will be visible

Four American citizens were kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in Mexico. Mexican officials confirm that four American citizens crossed the border to reach Mexico last week to buy medicine. The four men were travelling in a white minivan through the Mexican city of Matamoros when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them. Video revealed them being put in a pickup truck by heavily armed men.

According to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the four American men had a confrontation with the other group of men after which they were detained.

The US Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar told a different story in his statement. He said that the four American men were kidnapped at gunpoint and an ‘innocent’ Mexican citizen died in the attack. He said various US justice agencies were working with their Mexican counterparts to recover the missing persons. The authorities concerned from both sides have not provided any further details about the victims or the event.

According to a report by CNN, the four Americans who got kidnapped on Friday were a tight-knit group of friends from South Carolina. They were travelling to Mexico to help the mother of one of them so that she could undergo a medical procedure across the border.

What happened after four American citizens crossed the border over to Mexico?

The four American men came under gunfire from the men shortly after crossing the border on Friday through the city of Matamoros, in the Tamaulipas state, across from Brownsville, Texas. The victims crossed into Mexico in a white minivan with a North Carolina license plate, the FBI said. Shortly after, the gunmen fired upon the passengers in the vehicle. Afterwards, the four Americans were placed in another vehicle and taken away from the scene by the men.

Tamaulipas’ chief prosecutor, Irving Barrios, said a Mexican woman died in the attack. It is not clear whether she was killed in the same gunfight where the kidnapping took place.

President Joe Biden had been informed of the situation, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday. She declined to answer other questions, citing privacy concerns.

Who are the four American kidnapped in Mexico?

The names of all four victims are not revealed by the authorities to maintain secrecy. But Zalandria Brown of Florence, South Carolina, said she has been in contact with the FBI and local officials after learning that her younger brother, Zindell Brown, is one of the four victims.

Matamoros, Mexico

Matamoros is a city located across the US border from Brownsville, Texas. The city has been notorious for its growing violence which is majorly related to drug trafficking and other organised crimes. Tamnaulipas' highways are considered among the most dangerous in Mexico due to the threat of kidnapping and extortion by criminal gangs.

The US consulate in Matamoros had issued an alert on Friday warning of police activity in connection with a shooting in the city. The US State Department advises against travel to Tamaulipas due to crime and kidnapping.

"Organized crime activity, including gun battles, murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, forced disappearances, extortion, and sexual assault, is common along the northern border and in Ciudad Victoria," the state capital, according to a US travel advisory.

What did Zindell Brown’s sister said about her brother’s kidnapping?

Brown said her brother, who lives in South Carolina, and her three friends were extremely close to each other. They had planned to split up driving duties for the trip. They were aware of the dangers in Mexico.

"Zindell kept saying, ‘We shouldn’t go down,'" Brown said. “This is like a bad dream you wish you could wake up from. To see a member of your family thrown in the back of a truck and dragged is just unbelievable.”

Mexico- a popular destination for cheaper medical treatments

Mexico has become a popular destination for ‘medical tourism’ that attracts a lot of travellers who want cheaper alternatives or medical treatments that are unapproved in the US. The CDC had already warned of this growing trend as it might carry dangerous risks depending on the destination and facility, including infection and possible post-procedure complications.

Search and investigation for missing Americans underway

Investigators trying to locate the US citizens and identify those involved in the alleged kidnapping have been working to gather surveillance footage, collect ballistics and fingerprint evidence, take biological samples for genetic profiles and process the vehicles involved, Tamaulipas officials said.

A joint task force of federal and state agencies has been created for processing all the information and maintaining constant communication with the US officials, Barrios Mojica, the Tamaulipas Attorney General, said.

Jerry Richardson, an American businessman and former football player, died at the age of 86 on Wednesday, March 1. He was also the owner of one of the most influential National Football League (NFL) teams, the Carolina Panthers. He owned the franchise, Carolina Panthers from 1995 to 2018. Richardson was the face of the Panthers until his image was ultimately tainted by a sexual scandal.

The Panthers announced that Richardson died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday night. The current franchise owner, David Tepper, said in a statement, “With the arrival of the Panthers in 1995, he changed the landscape of sports in the region and gave the NFL fans here a team to call their own”.

Who was Jerry Richardson?

Jerry Richardson was a football player and the first former player to own an NFL team since Chicago’s George Halas. He was born in North Carolina, where he also did his schooling before entering Wofford College in South Carolina. He was an Associated Press Little All-American selection in 1957 and 1958. He made many records in his football career, from being Wofford’s single-game record with 214 receiving yards to become the record holder for touchdown receptions in a season and in a career.

As a senior at Wofford, he scored 72 points on nine touchdowns, 12 extra points and two field goals. Richardson was elected as the team captain in 1958 and in 1983 he was chosen to Wofford’s All-Time Football team as a receiver.

Richardson was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order family and was drafted in the 13th round by the then-defending world champion Baltimore Colts. He played two seasons in the NFL, earning Colt Rookie of the Year honours in 1959. He caught a touchdown pass in the 1959 NFC Championship Game from quarterback Johnny Unitas. He was traded from the Colts to the New York Giants for John Guzik on August 3, 1961.

How did Jerry Richardson help reshape the NFL?

Richardson was one of the most influential owners in the history of the NFL. The former Baltimore Colts player was a key factor in decision-making within the league during his time as the owner of the Panthers. He was highly active in his executive role which ensured the implementation of a number of positive changes in the NFL.

He secured an expansion franchise in the NFL in October 1993. The Carolina Panthers was unanimously awarded the 29th NFL franchise, ensuring a presence in the league in the southeastern region of the country. Under the leadership of Richardson, the franchise became a beloved institution in the Carolinas and beyond. His vision was crucial to the success of the team. He led the team to the Super Bowl twice (2002 and 2015) but never achieved the dream of winning it.

He was known for his commitment and dedication to the team’s players and the larger community. He also played a pivotal role in the development of the Bank of America Stadium where he once had his own statue. Despite the circumstances that led to his sale of the team, his time in the franchise will always be recognised with excellence.

What was the controversy around Jerry Richardson that caused his downfall?

Richardson was forced to sell his franchise owing to allegations of sexual harassment by female employees in 2018. The allegations came out on December 17, 2017, in a report by Sports Illustrated. The report was based on anonymous sources who alleged that Richardson used to give ‘significant’ monetary settlements to Panthers employees. In the report, he was also called out for his inappropriate workplace comments, including sexually suggestive language and behaviour. Reports also claimed his racial slur at an African-American Panthers scout on an occasion.

What was the cause of the death of Jerry Richardson?

The cause of his death is unknown as his family did not reveal any details about his death. A family spokesperson said on Thursday, that Richardson “died peacefully last night at his Charlotte home”.

“I will always remember him, as will millions in his beloved Carolinas, as the father of NFL football in these sister states,” said Max Muhleman, a public-relations specialist who worked closely with Richardson for years.
