New Vande Bharat trains: PM Modi to launch five new semi-high-speed trains tomorrow | Details

A Delhi-based man who has travelled to over 70 countries, set the record of covering all 286 metro stations in the national capital within 15 hours, 22 minutes and 49 seconds, the Indian Express reported. The record-holder, Shashank Manu, set this Guinness World Record in 2021. However, he officially received the certification in April 2023 after a mix-up that saw the honour being credited to Prafull Singh, a revenue inspector with Delhi Metro.

Prafull Singh reportedly took 16 hours and 2 minutes to cover all stations in 2021. After several months of talks with the Guinness record team, Manu was finally certified as the record holder for the feat.

How the man covered all Delhi metro stations in a day?

In order to set the record, the freelance researcher used a one-day tourist card and began the day sharp at 5:00 am on the blue line of the Delhi Metro. He ended his journey at 8:30 pm at the Brigadier Hoshiar Singh station on the green line. The tourist card allowed him to utilise unlimited rides for a day in the network spanning 348 km.

Manu was inspired to take this record during the COVID-19 pandemic, he told the Indian Express. After metro services were resumed post-lockdown, Manu attempted the record.

He ensured every phase of his journey was recorded with photographs, and an uncut video and verified with a signed form from other passengers. Two ‘independent witnesses’ accompanied him throughout the journey, who also had to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols, as per the Guinness guidelines. He also recorded the opening and closing times of the train doors at each station.

He further told the Indian Express, that he meticulously crafted an itinerary that allowed him to travel across and cover all metro stations in the least time possible.

Other Records

After this physically tiring but rewarding journey of more than 15 hours, Manu had to wait for over two years to get the Guinness World Records certificate. His friends and family were ecstatic to know about his achievement. In future, he plans to break more records. Most recently he set a record for the “most museums visited in 24 hours”. He also holds the record for the “most places of worship visited in one month”.

5 Greatest Unsolved Mysteries in Modern Physics

Quantum mechanics and general relativity, two successful theories, are the most incompatible ones. Quantum gravity aims to unify these theories to understand the universe better but it has not been successful yet.

Any matter that does not absorb, reflect, or emit light is called dark matter. It makes up 85% of matter in the universe, but it has not been detected or studied directly yet.

In the early universe, it was known that matter and anti-matter were created in equal amounts. However, observations reveal an imbalance, with matter dominating the universe. Though no one knows what caused this imbalance.

Astrophysical data suggests space-time might be ‘flat’, rather than curved, and thus that it goes on forever. If so, then the region we can see (which we think of as the universe) is just one patch in an infinitely large ‘quilted multiverse’.

Time, a fundamental aspect of our existence, poses profound questions about its nature and origins. Scientists grapple with the concept of time and whether it is an emergent property of the universe or a fundamental building block.

PM Modi gave handcrafted sandalwood box to President Biden, and a green diamond to First Lady Jill Biden. The sandalwood box contained a silver idol of Lord Ganesha and a diya (oil lamp). While the 7.5-carat green diamond was gifted in a box made of paper pulp, also known as kar-e-kalamdani. Modi also gifted Joe Biden a copy of the first edition of the book The Ten Principals Upanishads, which was translated into English by Biden’s favourite poet, WB Yeats.

On the other hand, the US president and his wife gifted Modi a handmade, antique American book galley from the 29th century. According to news agency PTI, they will also gift Modi a vintage American camera, accompanied by an archival facsimile print of George Eastman’s patent of the first Kodak camera, and a hardcover book of American wildlife photography.

But as the world talks about these gifts and their significance, let’s explore what happens to the gifts given to US presidents.

Can the US President keep all the gifts?

Throughout history, US presidents have received several lavish and unique gifts from leaders around the world. All these gifts are given as a sign of respect and are a reflection of the relations between the gifting country and the States. In the past, all gifts from foreign dignitaries had to be approved by US Congress, after which they could become the property of the recipient.

However, in 1928, a protocol was put in place to help presidents entertain visiting dignitaries and organise customary gift exchanges. And in 1966, the Foreign Gifts and Declarations Act came into place that put a limit to the value of a gift a president could accept, with most gifts going directly to the National Archives after being presented.

Limit on value of gifts US President can keep

As of January 2014, the limit on the value of gifts that the US president can keep is currently set at $375. This limit is generally changed every three years.

The handling of gifts from a foreign official to any Federal Government employee, including the president, is largely governed by the Foreign Gifts and Decorations Act of 1966 and further legislation passed in 1977.

Presidents and other government officials can purchase the gift they were given in office if they are willing to pay the market value of that specific item. US President Biden cannot keep the gifts given by PM Modi. Here's why

China’s staggering unemployment rate, specifically among 16 to 24-year-olds, has pushed the youth towards temple hopping and it seems they have more faith in deities than their degrees. According to the data released by the Chinese travel platform Qunar, the number of visitors to temple scenic spots increased by 367 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2022.

Much of this increase can be accounted for by the opening up of tourist and cultural spots since zero-Covid restrictions were abandoned in December. But some other religious sites are also experiencing increases in visitors compared with their pre-Covid levels.

Between January and May, nearly 2.4 million tourists visited Mount Emei in Sichuan, which is one of four holy mountains in Chinese Buddhism. This number is over 50 per cent more than in the same period in 2019.

Increasing rate of unemployment among Gen Zs

As it becomes more and more difficult for Chinese youth to search for a job in the country’s gloomy economy, many young people are hoping for divine intervention, causing an increase in footfall to temples.

As per the data collected by Trip.com, about half of the temple-goers in January and February were born after 1990. Millennials and Gen Z are part of a cohort of young people facing record levels of unemployment.

In May, the unemployment rate for 16 to 24-year-olds hit 20.8 per cent. China’s difficult economic recovery from zero-Covid and slowdowns in the education, property and technology sectors have squeezed opportunities for fresh graduates.

Who are these “incense-burning youth”?

The phrase “incense-burning youth” has spread over social media in China. It refers to young people who have turned to spiritual offerings in an attempt to increase their prospects. “Between going forward and going to work, I choose incense”, is another popular catchphrase in the country.

The slogan reflects a desire for self-improvement, as well as the decision of some young people to opt out of the rat race altogether. It has been linked to neijuan, or “involution”, the term used to describe the intense pressure felt by young people in China, where putting in more effort often feels futile.

Temples cashing in on rising demand, experts call it ‘temple economy’

Many temples saw this as an opportunity, and have started cashing in on this demand for spiritual nourishment by offering meditation courses, on-site cafes and, according to some reports, psychological counselling centres. All this has been labelled the ‘temple economy’ by experts.

Buddhist-style trinkets are also increasingly popular. In January, Lama temple, Beijing’s biggest Buddhist monastery, issued a statement clarifying that it had not authorised third-party platforms to sell Lama temple bracelets, contrary to the claims of some online vendors.

Although the Chinese Communist Party is officially atheist, many people turn to ancient practices in times of need.

China: Temple visits on the rise as jobless young people seek spiritual help

As the world wonders and questions what went wrong with the Titan submersible that left all the five passengers on board dead, a British man revealed why he pulled out of the Titanic expedition one last time. Chris Brown, a British explorer had reportedly decided to withdraw from the Titanic trip due, due to serious safety concerns. He had initially reserved a place on the OceanGate craft, which tragically went missing during a voyage to explore the shipwreck.

The Titan submersible lost communication with tour operators while approximately 435 miles south of St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The vessel carried five passengers, including billionaire Hamish Harding. However, upon closer information of the vessel’s technology and construction materials, Brown changed his decision.

Brown is a close friend of Hamish Harding, who was one of the five ill-fated passengers who lost their lives in the Titanic mishap. In the past, Brown has embarked on numerous voyages across the globe and during one such expedition he formed a friendship with Harding when they went to the South Pole.
Brown told Good Morning America that he was initially drawn to embarking on the expedition due to the historic and scientific possibilities.

"Being a modern-day adventurer interested in pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of places that people go... the Titanic is obviously an iconic wreck," he said. "It’s a chance for an expedition, an exploration and adding a bit of science into the situation."

What made Chris Brown change his mind?

The Sun reported that Brown was excited to go on the expedition, he even paid the deposit. However, his excitement was clouded by concerns when he saw that OceanGate, which was facilitating the trip, “cut too many corners”.

Brown questioned the technology and materials utilised in the construction of the submersible, ultimately feeling unconvinced of its overall safety. In his view, a commercial submersible of this magnitude should not compromise on the quality of its components.

According to the report, Mr Brown was shocked to find "old scaffolding poles" used for the submersible's ballast. "Its controls were based on computer game-style controllers," he said.

Such concerns led him to take action, promptly sending an email to the company requesting a refund of the $10,000 he had initially deposited as an advanced payment.

When confronted with the notion that he narrowly escaped a catastrophic accident, Brown expressed no sense of relief. Instead, he conveyed a deep sense of empathy for the mishap that could have been avoided.

In 2020, the CEO of OceanGate admitted to GeekWise that the hull of the submersible was showing signs of “fatigue”, one of the same technical issues the former employee from the lawsuit had warned about, as the company continued to test the craft, including with a 4000m deep dive in the Bahamas.

As a result, the company temporarily downgraded the Titanic submarine’s hull depth rating to 3,000m, 1,000 less than the Titanic’s depth, according to TechCrunch.
