North Korea claimed that it test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile known called Hwasong-17 on Thursday, reported the state news agency KCNA.

The missile, whose test-firing was reported earlier by the South Korean government, was fired amid "provocative and aggressive" military drills jointly being conducted by the United States and South Korea, stated the agency on Friday.

The launch of the missile on Thursday was the third show of force by North Korea since Sunday and took place hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was headed to Tokyo to attend the summit aimed at boosting ties in the face of growing aggression of Pyongyang.

The drill "serves as an occasion to give a stronger warning to the enemies intentionally escalating the tension in the Korean peninsula," stated KCNA.

Pyongyang confirmed that the missile was able to travel at a maximum altitude of some 6,000 km (3,700 miles) and flew almost 1,000 km (620 miles) "before accurately landing on the preset area in the open waters off the East Sea of Korea”, which is also called the Sea of Japan, as per the KCNA report.

"The launching drill of the strategic weapon serves as an occasion to give a stronger warning to the enemies intentionally escalating the tension in the Korean peninsula while persistently resorting to irresponsible and reckless military threats," stated the state news agency KCNA.

The government of South Korea claimed that the missile was launched on a lofted trajectory, upwards instead of outwards, which is generally done to prevent the missile from overflying neighbouring countries.

The defence co-operation between Seoul and Washington has been ramped up in the face of increasing nuclear and military threats from North Korea, which has conducted numerous provocative banned weapons tests recently.

North Korea on Tuesday fired two short-range ballistic missiles after launching two strategic cruise missiles on Sunday from a submarine, hours before the US-South Korea exercises started.

North Korea claims ICBM test-fired on Thursday: KCNA

A visitor discovered a diamond at an Arkansas state park and dubbed it "Bud". "That's for 'Big, Ugly Diamond,'" stated David Anderson, who was the lucky tourist to discover the gem in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The 3.29-carat brown diamond was discovered by Anderson at Crater of Diamonds State Park on March 4. Every day, one or two diamonds are discovered by visitors in the park which the authorities allow them to keep.

The man found the gem on a Saturday trip when he was visiting the park's 37.5-acre diamond searching zone, said the park officials in a press release on Wednesday.

"At first I thought it was quartz but wondered why it was so shiny. Once I picked it up, I realised it was a diamond,” Anderson said.

Anderson added that he has been visiting the park since the first time he heard about it on TV in 2007. "After I found my first diamond, a 1.5-carat white, I was hooked," he stated, adding that since then he has been able to find more than 400 diamonds.

Among his diamond collections are a 3.83-carat yellow diamond which he found in 2011 and a 6.19-carat white diamond which was discovered by him in 2014.

Like other visitors, Anderson said that he also plans to sell the diamond he has recently found to the jewellers in his area.

Park Interpreter Tayler Markham said that the rare stone was "about the size of an English pea, with a light brown colour and octahedron shape".

The rounded and smooth edges of the recent diamond discovered by Anderson are typical, considering the "resorption" during the eruption because the diamonds of the park came to the surface.

This is the largest diamond found in the park since September 2021, when a visitor discovered a 4.38-carat yellow diamond. This year, visitors have so far found 124 diamonds at the Crater of Diamonds State Park.

Visitors in the park are allowed to rent sifting and digging tools, and free identification for minerals and rocks discovered in the park is offered by the park rangers.

Since 1906, people have found more than 75,000 diamonds in the park. Among those, around 35,000 were discovered by the people after the region was converted into a state park in 1972.

The site is also the same place where researchers discovered the largest diamond ever found in the country. Experts had unearthed a white diamond with a pink cast, which weighed around 40.23 carats, in 1924 from the site.

The diamond, dubbed the "Uncle Sam", has been put on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

The largest banks in the United States on Thursday moved to rescue the First Republic, easing growing fears that the regional lender may be next to fall after some recent collapses which include Silicon Valley Bank.

A group of 11 private banks in the United States, which include Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, announced that $30 billion will be deposited by them into the First Republic.

The step marks a dramatic initiative by the lenders to support the system after the failures of three lenders in the last week.

"This action by America's largest banks reflects their confidence in the First Republic and in banks of all sizes," stated the group, in a joint statement.

"Together, we are deploying our financial strength and liquidity into the larger system, where it is needed the most," the banks added.

"This show of support by a group of large banks is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system," stated leaders of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, US Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in a joint statement.

JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citigroup each are making an uninsured deposit of $5 billion in the First Republic, while Morgan Stanley and Goldman will pump in $2.5 billion each.

Another group of five lenders, which include US Bank and PNC Bank, will each allot $1 billion.

First Republic founder Jim Herbert and CEO Mike Roffler, in a statement, said the "collective support strengthens our liquidity position... and is a vote of confidence for First Republic and the entire US banking system."

Largest banks move to shore up First Republic Bank in United States

Marcus Rashford's swerving strike from distance earned Manchester United a 1-0 win at Real Betis on Thursday and passage to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 5-1 aggregate triumph.

Three-time champions Juventus earned a 2-0 win over 10-man Freiburg to progress 3-0 on aggregate, with goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa.

Record six-time winners Sevilla suffered a nervy 1-0 defeat at Fenerbahce as Enner Valencia netted from the spot, but still qualified 2-1 on aggregate.

Joaquin hit the post for Betis and Juanmi spurned two clear chances for the hosts as they started well, trying to overturn their three-goal deficit at the lively Benito Villamarin stadium.

However Rashford's brilliant goal early in the second half quelled that idea and United saw the game out comfortably as Betis' energy levels dipped.

"Once you score the first goal the game is gone, and they don't have the belief anymore," said Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag.

"That is another step (forward) we made mentality, a winning attitude, to deal with that,” he added.

Ten Hag handed 21-year-old winger Facundo Pellistri his first start for the club in sun-washed Seville, after some bright cameos from the bench.

After Juanmi's misses Pellistri came inches from putting United ahead, with his effort hitting the post.

The visitors took the lead early in the second half, through Rashford's thunderbolt.

The forward, in remarkable form this season, missed two fine chances after the break but swiftly made amends with a vicious shot from outside the area which flew past Rui Silva and into the bottom corner.

It was Rashford's sixth goal of the tournament and his 27th across all competitions this season, in 43 appearances.

"Rashy had some chances before, and he missed some but he kept his belief, he kept trying and got his reward," added Ten Hag.

United's coach had run a risk by lining up with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, who were each a booking away from suspension, but they survived unscathed.

"When we found out the draw, we knew we had the hardest opponent in the Europa League, with a huge budget, prepared for the Champions League," said Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini.

"In the second leg we had three clear chances to change the dynamic, while they had one and they stuck it in. But I am proud of my team, which did not change its identity,” he stated.

Juventus, leading Freiburg by a goal from the first leg, thought they had taken the lead when Vlahovic struck from close range, but it was ruled offside by VAR.

However the Serbian forward broke the deadlock just before the break from the penalty spot after Manuel Gulde handled in the box and was shown his second yellow card.

With Juventus fully in control and Freiburg at a numerical disadvantage, the tie was as good as over and Chiesa wrapped up the win late on.

Jorge Sampaoli's Sevilla, struggling badly in La Liga, suffered defeat in Turkey but had done enough at home to progress against Fenerbahce and continue their charge.

Michy Batshuayi went off injured for the hosts early on, damaging their comeback bid, but Jorge Jesus' team took the lead when Alex Telles handled in the box.

Taking ahead its artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, Microsoft announced on Thursday that it will be incorporating a ChatGPT-style AI system into its widely used work software called Microsoft 365.

The system has been named Copilot by Microsoft, and the tech company said that they will embed it into Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella stated that the step would "fundamentally change the way we work." The firm, however, accepted that sometimes Copilot can even make mistakes.

"We all want to focus on the 20 per cent of our work that really matters, but 80 per cent of our time is consumed with busy work that bogs us down. Copilot lightens the load," said the tech giant in a statement.

This latest chatbot from Microsoft, with its ChatGPT-like abilities, will make it easier to churn out calendar entries, meeting transcripts, or PowerPoint slides instantaneously in offices.

The idea behind incorporating a ChatGPT-style AI system is to make it work like an assistant for users of Microsoft's workplace software and take over their office tasks unilaterally.

"You could say we've been using AI on autopilot, and with this next generation of AI, we are moving from autopilot to copilot," said Nadella at a virtual release event.

Billions of dollars have been pumped into OpenAI by Microsoft, which has been building the technology that is being used to power ChatGPT as well as its latest version, GPT-4.

AI technology has already been used to create the chatbot on Microsoft's Bing search engine, which is getting more users.

Various tech giants have been cautiously approaching generative AI, fearing the embarrassment that comes when the technology performs incorrectly.

The cloud computing arm of Google stated this week that testers will be provided with ways to "infuse generative AI" into applications or add them to the platform of the internet giant.

Last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram was creating a product group to find ways to "turbocharge" their AI work.

ALSO READ | OpenAI takes artificial intelligence race to next level, launches GPT-4 that can 'see' "We all want to focus on the 20 per cent of our work that really matters, but 80 per cent of our time is consumed with busy work that bogs us down. WATCH | ChatGPT is making waves, but can it trusted? The cloud computing arm of Google stated this week that testers will be provided with ways to "infuse generative AI" into applications or add them to the platform of the internet giant. Last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram was creating a product group to find ways to "turbocharge" their AI work. Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday announced two weeks of national mourning in remembrance of more than 200 people who lost their lives in Cyclone Freddy, which hit the country early this week.

The cyclone died after an 8,000-kilometre (5,000-mile) trek during which it crossed the Indian Ocean and made a second landfall in Africa, setting an unofficial record for the longest tropical storm in the world.

"In view of the extent of the loss of life caused by this disaster, I have directed that all of us as a nation observe 14 days of mourning and that all flags fly at half mast for the first seven of those days," said Chakwera, while addressing the nation.

A trail of death and destruction was left by Cyclone Freddy, in which at least 225 people were killed, a hundred others were injured and 41 went missing in Malawi, as per the official figures, as homes were washed away by floods and mudslides and inhabitants were buried.

Chakwera said that the release of 1.6 billion kwacha ($1.5 million) was authorised in an emergency cabinet meeting to assist thousands of Malawians who were badly affected by the storm.

"I can already tell you that this money will not be nearly enough. The level of devastation we are dealing with here is greater than the resources we have at our disposal,” said Chakwera.

The president said that Malawi, which is among the poorest countries in the world, is trying to get additional support from the international community.

"This cyclone is now the third to assault our country in just 13 months. A testament to the realities of climate change. The damage caused by this latest strike is the worst our country has seen in decades,” Chakwera said.

A Japanese astronomer captured an incredible moment in which a meteorite smashed into the surface of the moon, creating a crater in the natural satellite.

On February 23, a Japanese astronomer captured the huge flash of light which was described as a likely 'lunar impact flash' as the meteorite collided with the moon.

Hiratsuka City Museum's head of astronomy Daichi Fuji caught the split-second film around 8.15 pm (11.15 GMT) from his home located in Hiratsuka, Japan.

"I was able to catch the biggest lunar impact flash in my observation history! This is a picture of the lunar impact flash that appeared at 20:14:30.8 on February 23, 2023, taken from my home in Hiratsuka (replayed at actual speed). It was a huge flash that continued to shine for more than 1 second. Since the moon has no atmosphere, meteors, and fireballs cannot be seen, and the moment a crater is formed, it glows," tweeted Daichi Fujii as he posted the video.

“At the time of observation, there was no artificial satellite passing over the lunar surface, and from the way it shines, it is highly likely that it is a lunar impact flash,” Fujii wrote.

Fuji said that the space rock seems to have fallen near the Ideler L crater which is slightly northwest of the moon's Pitiscus crater.

Since he captured such a bright light on his telephoto camera, he claimed that the 'generated crater is large' and the 'striations are clearly visible'.

He stated that the fireballs and meteors are not visible, however, since there is no atmosphere on the moon, hence 'it glows' the moment a crater is formed.

“At that time, the altitude of the moon was only seven degrees, and I was glad that I was able to hold on until the last minute,” he added.

More than 100 meteoroids, as small as ping pong balls, hits the surface of the moon every day, as per Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama.

“That adds up to roughly 33,000 meteoroids per year. Despite their small size, each of these ping pong-ball-size rocks impacts the surface with the force of 7 pounds (3.2 kilograms) of dynamite,” Cooke said.

A Chinese military doctor who exposed the full extent of the SARS epidemic when it ripped through Beijing in 2003 has died at the age of 91, according to his friends and local media reports.

Jiang Yanyong accused the government of deliberately underreporting the spread of the respiratory disease in an open letter sent to state media in 2003. The disease killed nearly 800 people worldwide.

News of his death was not reported in Chinese state media, as is the norm with politically sensitive public figures.

Hu Jia, a human rights activist who said he was a longtime friend of Jiang's, told Reuters he died in a Beijing military hospital.

Two other family friends of Jiang, Bao Pu and Bao Jian, posted on Twitter about his passing earlier this week. Neither immediately replied to a request for comment from Reuters.

"Dr. Jiang Yanyong, who exposed the concealment of the SARS epidemic and was known for daring to tell the truth, passed away," Bao Pu wrote on Twitter.

Some media including the South China Morning Post said he died on Saturday of pneumonia, citing sources. Reuters could not immediately confirm this.

Jiang's death came during the annual sessions of China's parliament, a politically sensitive time when security measures are ramped up in the capital.

Born into a wealthy banking family and a longtime member of China's ruling Communist Party, Jiang served as a chief surgeon at a major military hospital in Beijing.

After his letter accusing authorities of covering up SARS in 2003, the Chinese government subsequently dismissed several officials including the health minister, and said it would be more transparent about responding to the crisis.

Jiang - who in a 2004 open letter also criticised the Communist Party leadership over the 1989 bloody crackdown of pro-democracy demonstrations, a taboo subject in China - said in 2009 that he had subsequently spent months under house arrest and was banned from travelling overseas.

SARS infected 8,908 people worldwide after emerging in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, eventually killing 774, according to World Health Organisation data.

Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday vowed that United States will fly its aircraft "wherever international law allows" and warned Russia it must operate with caution, after an American drone was allegedly crashed by one of the Russian fighter jets.

The statement was made by Austin shortly after he spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu over the phone about the incident that took place over the Black Sea on Tuesday when two Russian fighters allegedly hit an unmanned US surveillance drone and its propeller was damaged.

The incident was labelled by the United States as "reckless" and "unprofessional" while Moscow refuted the allegations and Washington was instead accused of conducting "hostile" flights in the region.

"The United States will continue to fly and to operate wherever international law allows," said Austin while speaking to reporters after the call with Shoigu. "And it is incumbent upon Russia to operate its military aircraft in a safe and professional manner," he added.

US Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley said that the video and the data retrieved from the drone are still being analysed by the Pentagon to see what exactly happened.

"Was it intentional or not? - don't know yet. We know that the intercept was intentional. We know that the aggressive behaviour was intentional, we also know it was very unprofessional and very unsafe," said Milley.

"The actual contact of the fixed-wing Russian fighter with our UAV, the physical contact with those two, not sure yet,” he added.

Appreciating the call, Austin said, “We take any potential for escalation very seriously and that's why I believe it's important to keep the lines of communication open.”

"I think it's really key that we're able to pick up the phone and engage each other. And I think that will help to prevent miscalculation going forward,” he added.

Meanwhile, Shoigu, in talks with Austin, said that "increased intelligence activities against the interests of the Russian Federation" as well as the "non-compliance with the restricted flight zone" declared by Moscow because of its military campaign in Ukraine led to the incident with the drone, said the defence ministry in a statement.

The Russian ministry further warned that it would react "proportionately" to any "provocations" by the US in future.

"Flights of American strategic unmanned aerial vehicles off the coast of Crimea are provocative in nature, which creates pre-conditions for an escalation of the situation in the Black Sea zone," the ministry stated.

"Russia is not interested in such a development of events, but it will continue to respond proportionately to all provocations,” it added.

Earlier in the day, Moscow said that the wreckage of a US military drone will be retrieved by the officials.

In televised remarks, Russian Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev said that Moscow would retrieve the wreckage of the downed craft but remained unsure if they would achieve success. "But it has to be done. And we will certainly work on it," he stated.

US says will fly 'wherever international law allows' after talks with Russia over drone downing

A new study has revealed that air pollution is creating a hindrance in the mating of fruit flies because females are unable to recognise the males' scent.

Female fruit flies use the scent of pheromones which is emitted by males to select them for mating, however, ozone pollution has disrupted the ability of males to emit their characteristic odour, researchers stated.

The study reflects how contaminated air is becoming a hindrance in the reproduction of fruit flies and other insects, and may lead to a decline in population.

“Everyone knows that we are facing insect decline, and so far the reason was pesticide use and habitat loss. But we think that we should also consider oxygen pollutants,” said Markus Knaden, who is an evolutionary neuroethology researcher at the Max Planck Institute as well as the study's lead author, which was published in the journal Nature Communications.

This study is based on how the smell of the flower is perceived differently by the insects when they are exposed to elevated levels of ozone.

The team of Knaden tested Drosophila fruit flies' nine different species by exposing half the males from every species to clean air and the other half to an atmosphere in which ozone levels are at 100 parts per billion.

The scientists discovered that the males kept in the atmosphere with higher ozone levels began emitting lesser pheromones and faced trouble in attracting female partners.

“When we expose male flies to ozone, then suddenly it took them much longer to convince the female to mate,” Knaden said.

“What’s more, emitting pheromones also helps males fend off other males from trying to reproduce with them. But being exposed to ozone led to males smelling less like males, and a rise in the number of attempts to mate between males,” he added.

“In the lab, it doesn’t matter whether the male has to wait one or two minutes longer to mate, or whether the male accidentally courts another male. But in the field, there is a lot of selection pressure and the flies have to be efficient, so they have to give everything to find the female as soon as possible, copulate and fertilise her eggs before they’re killed by a predator,” the researcher further stated.

Knaden said that nature will be hugely affected by this as ozone is just one among the different pollutants present in the environment which can do this.

Air pollution is causing decline in mating of fruit flies, study reveals

The Swiss central bank on Wednesday said that the embattled Credit Suisse's capital and liquidity levels were adequate but emphasised that it is prepared to make liquidity available to the bank if required.

The announcement was made after shares of the second-biggest bank in Switzerland nosedived to historic lows as its main shareholder declined to invest any money in the institution.

"Credit Suisse meets the higher capital and liquidity requirements applicable to systemically important banks," said the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and Swiss financial regulator Finma, in a joint statement.

Liquidity will be provided by the SNB to Credit Suisse "if necessary", the statement further read, as the turbulent day came to an end during which the market value of the bank fell below $7 billion.

Credit Suisse's share price fell sharply after Saudi National Bank chairman Ammar al-Khudairy said that it would "absolutely not" up its stake.

The market value of Credit Suisse had already received a heavy blow this week amid fears of contagion from the fall of two major banks in the US and its annual report stating "material weaknesses" in internal controls.

The shares of the bank went for a freefall on the Swiss stock exchange, declining more than 30 per cent to hit a record low of 1.55 Swiss francs. By the end of the day's trading, the bank was able to regain some ground as its shares closed at 1.697 Swiss francs, declining by 24.24 per cent.

Amid the panic in the market, Credit Suisse chairman Axel Lehmann, speaking at the Financial Sector Conference in Saudi Arabia, said no assistance is needed by the government, saying it "isn't a topic".

"We have strong capital ratios, a strong balance sheet. We already took the medicine," said Lehmann, referring to the drastic restructuring plan of the bank revealed in October.

A ballistic missile was fired by North Korea into the sea between Japan and the Korean peninsula, said South Korea's military on Thursday, hours before South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to fly to Tokyo to attend a rare summit.

This week, North Korea has been launching missiles on a daily basis amid ongoing joint military drills between South Korea and the United States that have been condemned by Pyongyang as hostile actions.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a statement on Thursday, said that at least one ballistic missile of an unknown type has been fired by North Korea off its east coast.

Yoon will be visiting Japan to attend a summit with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the first-of-its-kind summit being held in more than a decade as part of the two governments' efforts to overcome economic, political and historical disputes in the name of better co-operation to counter different challenges.

The two US allies also agreed to provide each other with real-time tracking of missile launches by North Korea and have promised to deepen military co-operation.

Two short-range ballistic missiles were fired by North Korea on Tuesday in its first launch since the manoeuvres, the biggest in five years, started as per the South Korean military.

Two strategic cruise missiles were launched by Pyongyang on Sunday from a submarine apparently to protest against the US-South Korea exercises.

The drills, called Freedom Shield, started on Monday and will continue for 10 days. Seoul's military, in a rare move, revealed this month that military exercises called "Teak Knife" are being staged by the two allies, which includes simulating precision strikes on important facilities in North Korea, before the Freedom Shield.

The focus of Freedom Shield exercises is on the "changing security environment" because of redoubled aggression of North Korea, the allies said.
