Scientists discovered evidence of active volcanoes on Venus, also known as Earth’s “twin”, while closely studying the archival images of the planet.

The images were captured by NASA Magellan spacecraft in the early 1990s while it was circling the planet.

A new analysis of the perspective of the orbiter of a region close to the Venusian equator revealed a volcanic vent which changed shape and increased in size in the period of eight months.

The images of the volcanic vent have become the first direct geological evidence found of recent volcanic activity on Venus, as per the researchers.

On Wednesday, a study detailing the recent findings was published in the journal Science and the researchers presented it at the 54th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.

The Magellan mission was the first one to take pictures of the entire surface of the planet before the spacecraft was plunged intentionally into the hot, toxic atmosphere of Venus in 1994 to gather a final set of data.

Now, a fleet of new missions will be sent to Venus within 10 years, which includes the Venus Emissivity, VERITAS, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy mission.

“NASA’s selection of the VERITAS mission inspired me to look for recent volcanic activity in Magellan data,” said Robert Herrick, lead study author, member of the VERITAS science team and research professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in a statement.

“I didn’t really expect to be successful, but after about 200 hours of manually comparing the images of different Magellan orbits, I saw two images of the same region taken eight months apart exhibiting telltale geological changes caused by an eruption,” he added.

The changes in the images of Atla Regio, which is a vast highland region and has the two largest volcanoes of Venus called Ozza Mons and Maat Mons, were spotted by Herrick.

“Both are similar to Earth’s largest volcanoes, but because they have lower slopes, the two Venusian volcanoes are more spread out,” he said.

“Only a couple of the simulations matched the imagery, and the most likely scenario is that volcanic activity occurred on Venus’ surface during Magellan’s mission. While this is just one data point for an entire planet, it confirms there is modern geological activity,” said Scott Hensley, project scientist for VERITAS.

Three hospital workers and seven US police officers are facing charges of second-degree murder in a Black inmate's death at a psychiatric hospital in Virginia, announced the case prosecutor on Thursday.

Irvo Otieno, aged 28, died on March 6 at Central State Hospital in Petersburg where he was transferred from a local prison due to his mental condition.

According to the results of the preliminary autopsy, Otieno died of asphyxiation while being "physically restrained”, said Dinwiddie County District Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill in a statement.

Video footage of the death of Otieno was shown to his family on Thursday.

Though Otieno "was going through mental illness, what I saw today was heartbreaking," said his mother Caroline Ouko in a press conference.

She stated the video shows "seven officers on one man," and that it "goes on and on."

“What I saw today was heartbreaking, America. It was disturbing. It was traumatic. My son was tortured. My son was treated like a dog, worse than a dog. I saw it with my own eyes... they smothered my baby," she added.

The family have hired Ben Crump who is a high-profile lawyer and is known for fighting cases which involve violence carried out against African Americans by police officials.

Speaking to the media, Crump said that the police had handcuffed Otieno and had his ankles shackled, and he was pinned down for 12 minutes by seven police officers.

“It is truly shocking that nearly three years after the brutal killing of George Floyd by police, another family is grieving a loved one who allegedly died in nearly the exact same manner — being pinned down by police for 12 agonising minutes,” said Crump in a statement.

The video is a “commentary on how inhumane law enforcement officials treat people who are having a mental health crisis as criminals rather than treating them as people who are in need of help,” he stated.

“He, in the videos, (is) never confrontational with them. He is not posing a threat to them. He’s not violent or aggressive with them. You see in the video he is restrained with handcuffs, he has leg irons on, and you see in the majority of the video that he seems to be in between lifelessness and unconsciousness, but yet you see him being restrained so brutally with a knee on his neck,” Crump said.

Another attorney representing Otieno’s family, Mark Krudys, said that all the seven deputies who were seen in the video are now facing charges.

“You can see that they’re putting their back into it. Every part of his body is being pushed down with absolute brutality,” he stated.

On March 3, police first took Otieno into custody. The police department stated that the officers encountered Otieno while looking into the complaint of a possible burglary in suburban Richmond and that based on his behaviour, they kept him under an emergency custody order and took him to a local hospital for evaluation.

US: 10 charged in Irvo Otieno's death after video reveals police torture

Sporting Lisbon's Pedro Goncalves scored an incredible equaliser and the Portuguese team went on to knock Arsenal out of the Europa League with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory in Thursday's last 16 second leg.

Sporting trailed when Granit Xhaka gave Premier League leaders Arsenal the lead in the first half at the Emirates Stadium.

But Portugal midfielder Goncalves forced extra-time when he beat Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale with a breathtaking strike from 46 yards out.

Goncalves's audacious goal was reminiscent of David Beckham's long-range chip for Manchester United against Wimbledon that launched him to superstardom in 1996.

With reality television star Kim Kardashian and her Arsenal fan son Saint watching from the stands, a pulsating encounter ended level at 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate, requiring penalties to settle the tie.

It was Sporting who emerged with a shock victory as Gabriel Martinelli's effort was saved by Antonio Adan and Nuno Santos dispatched the winning kick.

"A huge blow obviously. There were moments in the first 75 minutes where we weren't at our level. We gave every ball away and we didn't have the capacity to take the game," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.

"We had big chances to finish the game. We have to look at ourselves and why we were not good enough to go through,” he added.

Adding to Arsenal's problems, defenders William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu limped off injured in the first half after Arteta tried to protect his key players by making five changes.

Arsenal haven't won a European trophy since lifting the Cup-Winners' Cup in 1994 and their wait will go on for another year.

But the Gunners would gladly swap Europa League success for a long-awaited Premier League title.

Arsenal sit five points clear of second placed Manchester City in the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2004.

"We have 11 games left. Our next game with Palace is a final. All the work we do right now has to be towards Palace. We have to be better than this game," Arteta said.

Arteta had fielded a strong side in the first leg in Lisbon, but was more cautious ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Crystal Palace, resting Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Ben White and Thomas Party.

Bewildered Ramsdale

Arteta's one concession to Arsenal's attempt to reach the last eight was including Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus for his first start since undergoing knee surgery following his injury at the World Cup last year.

Jesus, who came off the bench against Fulham on Sunday for his first appearance since the injury, nearly marked his return with a goal as he stretched to reach Reiss Nelson's cross, forcing Adan to save at full stretch.

Arsenal moved ahead in the 19th minute when Gabriel Martinelli got behind the Sporting defence for a shot that was parried out by Adan, with Xhaka lashing in the rebound from 12 yards.

The sight of Saliba limping off moments later dampened the celebrations of Xhaka's fifth goal this season.

Arteta had seen enough of Arsenal's injury problems and took off Jesus at the interval to preserve his star striker.

But Sporting mounted a strong showing in the second half and their pressure was rewarded in stunning style in the 62nd minute.

When Jorginho lost possession in the centre circle, Goncalves seized his chance, looking up to see Ramsdale off his line before unfurling an incredible lofted strike from just inside the Gunners half that arrowed over the Arsenal keeper and dipped in under the bar.

Ramsdale sat bewildered in the back of his own net and shell-shocked Arsenal almost conceded again when Paulinho headed just over.

Sporting's Marcus Edwards and Arsenal substitute Trossard both spurned glorious chances to win it before Lisbon's Manuel Ugarte was sent off for a second bookable offence when he clattered into Bukayo Saka in the 118th minute.

Sporting stun Arsenal in Europa League shoot-out after Goncalves masterpiece

Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday said that the death toll due to Cyclone Freddy has reached 326. The cyclone lashed the country after making another landfall on southern Africa's mainland, increasing the total number of people killed across the region to over 400 since February.

"As of yesterday, the death toll from this disaster has risen from 225 to 326, and the number of people displaced has more than doubled to 183,159," said Chakwera, speaking from the devastated southern region near Blantyre.

President Chakwera has further appealed for global aid as the search for survivors continues on Thursday after the mudslides and flooding caused by torrential rains this week.

Southern Africa was first struck by the cyclone in late February, as it hit Mozambique and Madagascar, but caused limited damage in Malawi which is a landlocked country.

The storm then travelled to the Indian Ocean, where it got more powerful due to the warm waters before it made a rare recourse to hit the mainland for the second time.

Since Wednesday, the rain has eased but Freddy continues to be on track to become one of the longest tropical storms in the world.

In Mozambique, at least 63 people died and around 49,000 have been displaced due to the storm, as per the official figures released on Wednesday.

An appeal for aid has been made by Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi to rebuild destroyed infrastructure.

As per the meteorologists, the cyclone has been exceptional in its duration and its characteristics have been consistent with the warnings given related to climate change.

Cyclone Freddy: Death toll in Malawi reaches 326; over 400 killed across region

Police clashed with protesters in Paris after the French government took the decision to force through pension reforms without voting in parliament.

People gathered on Place de la Concorde to protest against the increase in the retirement age from 62 to 64. As protests escalated, tear gas was fired by the police as they tried to disperse the crowd. Protesters were seen throwing cobblestones.

Special constitutional powers were used by the French government to force through the pension reforms bill amid chaos in parliament as radical left MPs started singing La Marseillaise loudly to stop French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne from speaking.

A last-minute decision was taken by French President Emmanuel Macron to avoid a parliamentary vote and pass the legislation to increase the pension age from 62 to 64.

Minutes before the country's MPs were to cast vote in the lower house, Macron was busy conducting frantic meetings with senior political figures, and in minutes, he decided to use special powers and not take the risk of voting, in which he had chances of losing.

Macron invoked the constitution's article 49.3 which gives the government the power to bypass parliament. On the left, MPs shouted “Resign! Resign!” at Borne, and radical left party France Unbowed's members sang the national anthem loudly so that Borne is not able to speak and the session gets suspended.

Speaking at the parliament, Borne said that they will push the bill through because the government cannot afford to “gamble the future of our pensions”.

The bill was earlier adopted by the Senate on Thursday. However, since the right-wing opposition MPs present in the National Assembly were reluctant to support Macron, the government had a fair chance of facing defeat in the lower house.

"We can't take the risk of seeing 175 hours of parliamentary debate come to nothing," Borne said while announcing the move.

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen said, "It's a total failure for the government. From the beginning the government fooled itself into thinking it had a majority."

As per the polls, around two-thirds of citizens in France oppose the pension overhaul.

"When a president has no majority in the country, no majority in the National Assembly, he must withdraw his bill," said Socialist Party chief Olivier Faure.

Few opposition parties, including Le Pen's, are likely to call a no-confidence vote on Friday, however, the cabinet of Borne is likely to survive because of support from the right-wing Republicans party.

Immediately after the step, Unions called for mass strikes and protests for the next day, as they called the government's move "a complete denial of democracy".
