United States President Joe Biden on Friday cracked multiple jokes related to his Irish ancestry as he marked St Patrick’s Day with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar at the White House.

The 80-year-old president attended the Friends of Ireland Luncheon with Varadkar and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, where he spoke on their shared Irish heritage and the friendly ties between the two countries.

“I’ve been to Ireland many times, but not to actually look up, to find my actual family members. And there are so many — and they actually weren’t in jail,” said Biden, recalling his six-day visit to the nation during which he met his relatives.

“There’s still a place called Finnegan’s pub…that’s related to my family. I’m the only Irishman you ever met, though, that’s never had a drink, so I’m OK. I’m really not Irish,” he added.

McCarthy, who has Irish ancestry, said that he is willing to work together with Biden. Responding to that, Biden said, “I agree with the speaker, there’s no reason why we can’t find common ground. There’s no reason why we can’t hope to change this direction of the extremes in which both parties are pushing.”

“I think it’s important. I think it’s really important. And that’s the power of friendship. I think it’s the power of - it’s the strength of our partnership, if we work at it, and simply put, I think it’s the Irish of it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Biden, who was sporting a sprig of shamrock in his lapel, held a meeting with Varadkar in the Oval Office, where he said that Saint Patrick's is a "big day" in his house.

Varadkar emphasised recent assistance by the United States over the trade rules between Britain and its Northern Irish province and the Republic of Ireland.

The arrangement, called the Windsor Framework, is an "agreement that lasts," said Varadkar, adding "which is important for Northern Ireland, and also important for British-Irish and European relations."

A recent study has revealed that footballers are 50 per cent more likely to suffer from dementia compared to the rest of the population.

Researchers from Sweden's Karolinska Institutet published the study in the Lancet Public Health journal which compared 6,000 elite footballers' health records with more than 56,000 non-footballers between 1924 and 2019.

The study revealed that nine per cent of male footballers, who were playing in the Swedish top division, were diagnosed with neurodegenerative disease in comparison to six per cent from the control sample.

The study then examined the difference in outfield players and goalkeepers’ cognitive health and found that outfield players had more chances of suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. However, the goalkeepers who rarely head the ball had fewer chances of dementia, “supporting the hypothesis that mild head impacts sustained when heading the ball could explain the increased risk in outfield players,” concluded the study.

Karolinska Institutet's assistant professor and the study's co-author Peter Ueda said, “Importantly, our findings suggest that goalkeepers don’t have the same increased risk of neurodegenerative disease as outfield players. Goalkeepers rarely head the ball, unlike outfield players, but are exposed to similar environments and lifestyles during their football careers and perhaps also after retirement.”

Speaking about the possibility of heading the ball leading to dementia, UCL Genetics Institute's honorary professor David Curtis said, “It seems extremely plausible that repeatedly heading the ball during training and normal play produces brain damage which over time can result in dementia.”

“The fact that the risk to goalkeepers, who rarely head the ball, is not increased, strengthens this hypothesis. If we assume that about one in 10 people would develop dementia anyway, then this means that about one in 20 professional footballers will develop dementia who would not otherwise have done so, as a result of heading the ball,” he added.

Emphasising the need for appropriate measures to protect the health of the players, associate director of research at Alzheimer’s Society, Dr Richard Oakley said, “We now urgently need more answers to determine what lies behind this link – why dementia would start to form, how the type of injury, frequency and age at which head injuries occur may influence risk, and how we can accurately predict who is likely to go on to develop dementia after a traumatic brain injury. Sporting bodies need this clarity so they can put in place appropriate measures to protect players.”

Footballers have 50 per cent chances of developing dementia, study reveals

A recent study was conducted by astronomers from the University of California, Irvine, in which they suggested the possibility of aliens hiding in special 'terminator zones' on distant exoplanets, where the temperature is not too hot or cold.

Various exoplanets, which are outside our solar system, remain tidally locked and hence, one side always continues to face the star around which they orbit and the other side remains permanently in darkness.

The astronomers, in their study, found that there is a band around these planets in which there is a possibility that they are harbouring liquid water which is the main ingredient for life.

This band is called the 'terminator zone' where the terminator acts as the dividing line between the day side and night side of the exoplanet.

The scientists said that the water is likely to remain frozen on the cold night side and is likely to evaporate due to heat on the light dayside.

“The dayside can be scorching hot, well beyond habitability, and the night side is going to be freezing, potentially covered in ice. You could have large glaciers at the night side. You want a planet that's in the sweet spot of just the right temperature for having liquid water,” said lead author, Dr Ana Lobo.

“We are trying to draw attention to more water-limited planets, which despite not having widespread oceans, could have lakes or other smaller bodies of liquid water, and these climates could actually be very promising,” she added.

Lobo added that one of the major findings was understanding what kind of terminator zone can retain liquid water on the planet. The team discovered that if water is mostly covering the planet then the water facing the star is most likely to evaporate and the entire planet will be covered in a thick layer of vapour. However, this effect shouldn't take place if there's land.

“Ana has shown if there’s a lot of land on the planet, the scenario we call ‘terminator habitability’ can exist a lot more easily,” said Aomawa Shields, UCI associate professor of physics & astronomy.

“These new and exotic habitability states our team is uncovering are no longer the stuff of science fiction — Ana has done the work to show that such states can be climatically stable,” Shields added.

Identifying terminator zones as a potential place for harbouring life also means that astronomers are required to adjust the way exoplanet climates are being studied for finding signs of life because there is a chance of biosignatures life creates being present in few parts of the atmosphere of the planet.

Aliens on distant exoplanets? Scientists say ‘terminator zones’ could harbour life

Alexander Isak's stoppage time penalty lifted Newcastle to within a point of the Premier League top four with a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Friday.

The Magpies had fallen behind when Sven Botman gifted Emmanuel Dennis the opening goal on 26 minutes.

But Isak levelled for Eddie Howe's men and ended Forest's nine-game unbeaten home league run stretching back to September with a cool spot-kick after Moussa Niakhate handled inside his own area.

Defeat leaves Forest still two points above the relegation zone, but they deserved little more after being outplayed from start to finish.

Newcastle ended a near two-month wait for a Premier League win last weekend in beating Wolves but back-to-back victories has put them right back in the race for Champions League football next season.

The closest the visitors came to turning their early dominance into a lead was when Renan Lodi turned Isak's cross onto his own crossbar.

Instead it was Forest who went in front completely against the run of play thanks to a howler from Botman.

The Dutch centre-back has been a major factor in Newcastle's success this season but his attempted pass back to goalkeeper Nick Pope was intercepted by Dennis, who produced a stunning chipped finish beyond Pope and Kieran Tripper for just his second Forest goal.

The crossbar came to the home side's rescue again when Sean Longstaff's deflected strike from the edge of the box came back off the woodwork.

Newcastle finally got their reward in first half stoppage time when the club's record signing Isak acrobatically flicked in Joe Willock's cross off the post.

The pattern of play continued after the break as the Magpies laid siege to the Forest goal.

Former Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas had to be at his best to turn over powerful drives from Elliot Anderson and Bruno Guimaraes.

Anderson then thought he had his first senior goal when he headed in Isak's cross at the back post.

However, the goal was controversially disallowed after a VAR check for offside against Longstaff in the build-up despite the ball breaking to the midfielder off a Forest player.

Chances continued to come and go for the visitors as Willock fired a glorious chance wide before Serge Aurier cleared off the line from Isak.

Forest could still have stolen all three points when Pope's outstretched leg denied Brennan Johnson a winner four minutes from time.

But just when they looked set to hold out for a precious point in their battle to beat the drop, Niakhate needlessly put his hand up to block Isak's tame header.

Premier League: Isak fires Newcastle to within sight of top four

Tunisia's Interior Minister Taoufik Charfeddine, who is President Kais Saied's close aide, on Friday announced that he has submitted his resignation so that he can spend more time with his three children after his wife's death last year.

Charfeddine, aged 54, was holding this position since October 2021. Speaking to the reporters, he said that he wants to thank the president for "his understanding and for allowing me to be relieved of my duties".

Charfeddine's wife died in a fire which broke out due to a gas leak in their home in June 2022. Charfeddine was a key figure in the election campaign which led Saied, who was previously little known, to the presidency in 2019.

As President Saied worked through sweeping changes in the political system of the country, Charfeddine emerged as one of his most outspoken defenders.

Video footage of the frequent meetings of the two men in the presidential palace was regularly released by Saied's office. During the multiple arrests that took place during Saied's regime, Charfeddine continued holding a press conferences and defending the opposition politicians' incarceration.

When Islamist-inspired Ennahdha party's vice president went on hunger strike to raise his voice against his detention, Charfeddine said that fears of terrorism had forced the security forces to respond.

"There were fears of acts of terrorism targeting the country's security and we had to act," said the minister, while speaking about former justice minister Noureddine Bhiri's arrest.

Charfeddine stood by Saied's side last month as the country battled an international outcry over a tirade by the president against sub-Saharan Africa's illegal migrants.

"There is no question of allowing anyone in an illegal situation to stay in Tunisia," said the president during one of his recorded meetings with the minister.

"I will not allow the institutions of the state to be undermined or the demographic composition of Tunisia to be changed,” he added.

United States former president Donald Trump on Friday uploaded his first post on his Facebook and YouTube accounts which were reinstated after being banned for more than two years over the US Capitol insurrection.

"I'M BACK," Trump wrote, while sharing a 12-second video clip in which he appeared to be giving his victory speech after winning the elections in 2016. In the video, he was seen exclaiming, "Sorry to keep you waiting - complicated business."

The suspended account of Trump was reinstated by YouTube on Friday after two years.

The step was taken after a similar decision was adopted by Meta, which is the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, and Twitter, which is owned by Elon Musk.

In January 2021, Trump was banned from uploading videos on YouTube, with the social media platform at the time stating that rules of incitement of violence were broken by his channel.

However, according to the press account on YouTube, Trump's account is now back online.

"Starting today, the Donald J. Trump channel is no longer restricted and can upload new content," wrote Google-owned YouTube on Twitter.

"We carefully evaluated the continued risk of real-world violence, while balancing the chance for voters to hear equally from major national candidates in the run-up to an election. This channel will continue to be subject to our policies, just like any other channel on YouTube,” it added.

Social media bans

Trump was previously banned by YouTube from sharing videos on its platform days after the US Capitol was stormed by his supporters in Washington DC on January 6, 2021.

Hundreds of rioters had barged into the complex after attempts were made by the US Congress to certify the victory of Joe Biden in the presidential election.

After the US Capitol attack, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts of Trump were also suspended. After seven months, Trump started his own social media platform, Truth Social.

However, in 2022, Trump announced that he is running for the US presidency in 2024, and after that, his accounts on all social media platforms are being reinstated.

Britain's lawmakers on Friday said that the Royal Mail has "systemically failed" to fulfil mail delivery requirements, as they appealed to regulator Ofcom to investigate the postal operator.

"We believe that Royal Mail has systemically failed to deliver against parts of its universal service obligation," stated a report issued by the cross-party Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee.

The Royal Mail is required to deliver letters six days a week in its one-price-goes-anywhere postal service.

The committee, however, stated it has "widespread evidence" which shows that Royal Mail has been prioritising parcels over letters, without accepting the policy change.

"We recognise the challenges of both the pandemic and ongoing industrial action, but the evidence we have suggests this systemic failure has been taking place before, between and during these events," it said.

The cross-party parliamentary committee has appealed to Ofcom to start an enforcement investigation which will report back by the year's end.

"Ofcom must start enforcement proceedings to ensure everyone gets a consistent service wherever they are," stated committee member and opposition Labour MP Darren Jones.

He added, "Otherwise, what's the point in having a universal service obligation at all?"

Established more than 500 years ago, Royal Mail has gone through turbulent times in the past decade, especially during its privatisation in 2013.

During the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, the former state-run operator received a boost due to an increase in the volume of parcels but since then, it has fallen sharply.

TikTok, the video-sharing application owned by Chinese company ByteDance, is being investigated by the US Department of Justice and FBI over the allegations of its employees spying on journalists, said a law enforcement official on Friday as per media reports.

Justice Department prosecutors are conducting the investigation in the Eastern District of Virginia and in Washington along with the FBI, said the officials.

While speaking to NBC about the news report, a spokesperson of ByteDance said, "We have strongly condemned the actions of the individuals found to have been involved, and they are no longer employed at ByteDance. Our internal investigation is still ongoing, and we will co-operate with any official investigations when brought to us."

Forbes first reported about the investigation on Thursday, stating that the company fired the employees who were implicated in the surveillance after it was confirmed that efforts were being made by them to discover the sources of leaks and business documents to journalists.

An investigation by ByteDance found that employees of the company gained access to the IP addresses as well as other data of the reporters as well of some of their contacts which were connected through their accounts on TikTok, reported Forbes.

Investigation into TikTok is going on at a time when concern over the security threats to the citizens of the United States due to TikTok has increased.

A potential ban has been threatened by the Biden administration on the video-sharing application in the United States if its Chinese owners do not agree to sell their stakes in the company.
