The teenagers appealed to the government of Australia to impose tougher restrictions which can help them free themselves from their nicotine addiction, revealed the submissions made to a major consultation on the issue of vaping reforms.

South Australia’s commissioner for children and young people Helen Connolly made a submission to the drug regulator Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) which included comments written by around 950 teenagers between the age of 13-to-19 in a survey conducted by her office regarding vaping.

“All we have to do is go to a cheap servo…and there we can buy a vape without being asked for identification of age. There really needs to be restrictions put in place to make them not so easy to access and then the addiction would be forced to stop. I know many people, me included, would be extremely angry at first when there [sic] in the first few days without nicotine but if adults want children to stop, I truly believe it’s the only way,” a 16-year-old girl wrote.

“Stop treating kids with vaping addiction like they’re awful people because you would help an adult with one but not a child,” said a 15-year-old girl.

“Some of us aren’t doing it to look cool, some of us are genuinely struggling with addictions or are using them as coping mechanisms like a stress reliever,” mentioned a 17-year-old girl in her comments.

Connolly said that on the basis of comments made by the teenagers in the survey, the government should ban nicotine and non-nicotine vaping products from importation unless they are bound for pharmacies.

She added that the products must be tested, certified and labelled properly and should be packed in plain packaging, except for colouring agents and tobacco, which should be prohibited.

“Such a response must avoid punishing children and young people, while ensuring there is information and support available for all children, with particular support for those who may be dependent or addicted to nicotine vapes and may struggle with withdrawals,” she stated.

The TGA published around 4,000 submissions added to the vaping reform inquiry on Thursday. The Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia made a submission, which stated, “The direct comments from students read as a cri-de-coeur.”

Australia: Teenagers urge government to help them fight off vaping addiction

Finland, which has been crowned as the world's happiest country for six years continuously, is now planning to offer a masterclass on happiness to the rest of the world.

A four-day masterclass on happiness is being hosted by the Nordic country in June, and its tourism board stated that 10 lucky applicants will get to visit Norway for free.

Other participants will be able to virtually study and cheer up when the masterclass is later made available online.

In a statement, senior director of international marketing at Business Finland Heli Jimenez said, "A question we often get is: 'How are you so happy?'"

"We believe Finnish happiness stems from a close relationship with nature and our down-to-earth lifestyle: it's not some mystical state, but a skill that can be learned and shared,” Jimenez added.

Finland recently clinched the top position in the World Happiness Report again. The World Happiness Report observes six factors to measure happiness – generosity, freedom, income, health, absence of corruption and social support.

The tourism authorities understand why the citizens are consistently so happy which includes access to nature, efficient public services and low levels of corruption and crime.

The authorities now plan to "help people find and master that Finnish state of mind", including saunas and pine forests.

"We've chosen the best coaches, one of the most breath-taking resorts in Finland, and a time in the early summer amid the beautiful Finnish nature for our masterclass," said Jimenez.

"We feel it's a really unique opportunity to discover something wonderful and valuable: anyone curious should definitely apply,” she added.

What will the course include?

The crash course of happiness will include four main themes — nature and lifestyle, health and balance, food and well-being and design — and four experts will teach the courses to those enrolled.

The programme will run from June 12-15 and participants will arrive a day before and depart the day after the course ends.

The participants will stay in the Finnish Lakeland region's luxury resort, Kuru Resort, which organisers describe as "surrounded by fragrant pine forests and breath-taking views”.

Every participant will be given their own villa which will have panoramic windows as well as a spa and private sauna.

Since the programme emphasises a digital detox and good sleep, the organiser said that no TVs will be available in the villas and the bedding, which has been approved by sleep specialists, will be provided to participants
"Every minute detail (at) the resort is designed to help you wind down and relax — fragrances, sounds and materials included," they added.

The accommodation and travel expenses of the participants will be covered in the programme. However, they will be filmed during their entire visit.

How to apply

According to the officials, anyone above the age of 18 can apply for the masterclass, either individually or with a partner, relative or friend.

The officials are in search of people who can speak English but are not representing any company or brand and are comfortable being filmed.

"We are looking for outgoing people who are interested in comprehensive well-being and Finnish nature. You don't have to be a self-help enthusiast or have survival skills in Finnish nature. All we want is an open mind,” the officials say.

To apply, one needs to fill in an online form and finish their social media challenge using either TikTok or Instagram.

The challenge is to create content, preferably record a video, showing "what things make you believe you may be secretly a Finn," and also explain why you wish to take this masterclass.

"Are you the type of person who would much rather go to a forest than to a party? One who feels absolute desperation when running out of coffee? Prefers washing up in a lake rather than in the shower? That's just your inner Finn," stated Visit Finland in an Instagram post while announcing the challenge.

The deadline for applications is April 2 and winners will be announced publicly on social media a month later.

A Muslim man was convicted and sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in northwest Pakistan after he faced an accusation of sharing a blasphemous post in a WhatsApp group.

In Pakistan, where the majority population is Muslim, blasphemy remains a hugely sensitive issue as even allegations which are unproven can stir mobs and lead to violence.

The court convicted Syed Muhammad Zeeshan under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act and Anti-Terrorist Act in Peshawar on Friday.

“Accused Syed Muhammad Zeeshan, son of Syed Zakaullah in custody has been convicted and sentenced after being found guilty,” read the court order, according to the AFP.

Zeeshan, who lives in the country's northwest city of Mardan, was also slapped with a fine of Rs1.2 million ($4,300) and given 23 years of rigorous imprisonment. The man has the right to appeal against the court order.

Two years ago, an application was filed by Muhammad Saeed, who resides in Talagang, Punjab province, with the Federal Investigation Agency in which he accused Zeeshan of sharing blasphemous posts in a WhatsApp group, said Saeed’s counsel Ibrar Hussain while speaking to the AFP.

The “FIA had confiscated Zeeshan’s cellphone and its forensic examination proved him guilty”, he added. Although the laws of Pakistan prohibiting blasphemy may carry a potential death sentence, it has never been enforced so far for the crime.

As per ARY News, Khawaja Asif also criticised PTI chief Imran Khan and claimed that the allegation of an assassination attempt levelled by the latter was a lie.

New research is claiming to be the strongest proof that the Covid virus jumped from animals to humans. The study is based on analysis of samples collected from an animal market in Wuhan, China, from the initial days of the pandemic.

The samples discovered evidence of the novel coronavirus' presence along with genetic material in various animals, including raccoon dogs which are highly susceptible to the virus, as per a report published on the Zenodo.org open science website on Monday.

According to the report, in a few samples, more animal genetic material was found compared to human genetic material which indicates the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infections in animals.

"The sequences showed that raccoon dogs and other animals susceptible to the coronavirus were present in the market and may have been infected, providing a new clue in the chain of transmission that eventually reached humans," the report stated.

"This adds to the body of evidence identifying the Huanan market as the spillover location of Sars-CoV-2 and the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic," it added.

The virus was identified for the first time in Wuhan in December 2019 as many suspected the Huanan live animal market can be the source of pandemic.
The study has till now not been reviewed by the scientific community. China has been called out by the World Health Organization for fully sharing the genetic data which was analysed by the researchers.

“I worry a lot about our jumping on tidbits that are incomplete and cannot be verified,” stated David Relman, who works as a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University. “I think we need to take a deep breath and insist on the kind of process and science that any important issue, especially this one, deserves," he added.

This is the latest report that has emerged from the researchers' frantic search for answers on how the pandemic started. On Monday, a bill was signed into law by US President Joe Biden to declassify intelligence on COVID-19's origin.

In a press conference on Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “These data do not provide a definitive answer to the question of how the pandemic began but every piece of data is important in moving us closer to that answer.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Goldstein, a virologist at the University of Utah who participated in the analysis, said, “It’s the first time we’ve been able to identify a genetic fingerprint of the virus and a potential intermediate host in the exact same place. It’s completely consistent and expected from what you’d see in a zoonotic spillover event.”

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the country has "always supported and participated in global scientific co-operation on origin tracing" and it will continue to do so, but added that the international scientific community should also share "their research on the virus originating from other regions of the world with China".

WATCH | Wary West tries to decode China's motives in Ukraine-Russia war In a press conference on Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “These data do not provide a definitive answer to the question of how the pandemic began but every piece of data is important in moving us closer to that answer.” Meanwhile, Stephen Goldstein, a virologist at the University of Utah who participated in the analysis, said, “It’s the first time we’ve been able to identify a genetic fingerprint of the virus and a potential intermediate host in the exact same place. It’s completely consistent and expected from what you’d see in a zoonotic spillover event.” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that the country has "always supported and participated in global scientific co-operation on origin tracing" and it will continue to do so, but added that the international scientific community should also share "their research on the virus originating from other regions of the world with China". Traces of COVID-19 in Wuhan's animal market spark debate over origin of pandemic

It was only a few years back that Cape Town, South Africa, was headed towards what local officials labelled as “Day Zero” for drinking water, in an area that has 97 per cent salt water. The crisis would have appeared analogous to the helpless situation described by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in his poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - “Water, water, everywhere, and not a drop to drink”. Even though the city survived the scare with the help of its contingency plan, the threat of “Day Zero” still looms not only over Cape Town but many regions and cities across South Africa.

Numerous discussions and debates have been held on how important is water for human survival and that it is the quintessential element needed for life on planet Earth. Today to find signs of life on other planets, scientists look out for water, as its mere existence increases the chances of finding alien life. However, as the world, which has only 2 per cent frozen freshwater and 1 per cent liquid freshwater, battles water scarcity, it is high time we must ask ourselves where are we headed.

Survive or perish – the question that the past holds for us

Open a tap and water gushes out – availability of water has been made so easy that we take it for granted, in most parts of the human-inhabited world. It is this casual availability of water which blinds us from seeing the depleting groundwater levels, soil compression due to which Mexico City is reportedly sinking, and rain and snow failing to fill in surface water like lakes and rivers we rely on.

It also makes us forget the quest for water, which has been one of the defining struggles etched in human history. Past always holds lessons for the future to learn and save humanity from the calamity which may befall us someday. With respect to the water crisis, we must remember how many strong and established civilisations perished due to drought and water scarcity. Civilisations which were successful in harnessing water thrived and those that failed disappeared in the dust of time.

One of the greatest civilisations of all time, the Mayan civilisation, despite surviving 100 years of drought with the help of its rainwater collection systems and rivers, finally collapsed. The great Akkadian Empire also met with a similar fate due to the arid conditions.

According to the United Nations, around five billion people are likely to face water shortages by 2050 as freshwater sources continue to drain faster. Out of 37 major aquifers in the world, 21 are receding in the United States, India, France and China. With an increase in population and irrigation demands, India's mighty river, the Ganges is depleting every year by an estimated 6.31cm.

With the water table dropping all over the world, countries receiving irregular rainfall and global warming disturbing the ecosystem, the world doesn't seem a happier place. The realities can turn even harsher compared to the crisis the world is witnessing at the present. The earth is parched, dying with receding water levels as scientists scramble to find water on the moon in their quest to make the satellite a habitable place. The time calls for adaptation of better saves to save water and save the earth.

A sobering warning

In a report published on Wednesday, the United Nations (UN) warned that the 'vampiric' overconsumption of water by humans is putting the resource at risk. According to the report, about 10 per cent of the "world's population lives in a country where water stress has reached a high or critical level".

The report further warned that "scarcity is becoming endemic" because of pollution and overconsumption. It added that seasonal water shortages will be further increased in areas with strained as well as abundant water. In the report's foreword, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the world is "blindly travelling a dangerous path" as "unsustainable water use, pollution and unchecked global warming are draining humanity's lifeblood”.

"If nothing is done, it will be a business-as-usual scenario — it will keep on being between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of the population of the world that does not have access to sanitation and roughly 20-25 per cent of the world will not have access to safe water supply," Richard Connor, lead author of the report, said.

This, if nothing, sounds like a warning bell for the world to wake up and recognise the calamity that stands ahead of us.

World Water Day 2023: Parched! The drying future of water

In a span of few days, Switzerland’s second-largest bank and one of the world's most influential banks, Credit Suisse, announced its distress sale and was bought out by its domestic rival UBS for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.25 billion) in what appeared to be a “shotgun wedding” and arranged marriage in equal parts. The government of Switzerland hurriedly brokered the deal so as to contain the crisis of confidence in Credit Suisse, which was facing withdrawals of around $10 billion last week as per reports, but also to stop the contagion to other banks.

This was a historic collapse for the 166-year-old bank. However, what appeared to be more worrisome was that this was the third major bank in line to see a fall of such a high magnitude in the last 10 days.

Is the world witnessing a banking crisis?

The collapse of major banks started with California-based Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) which was the first biggest bank in the United States to fall since 2008. Trying to understand the recent decline of banks, AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said although the failure of banks does not look like a return of the financial crisis, it does represent contagion risks.

Regional banks are being sold by the investors, in particular, over concerns that their balance sheets would resemble those of SVB finances.

Other parts of the financial market, which includes US tech stocks, have continued to fare well in the volatile weeks, indicating that few investors are hoping that the threat of a major banking crisis may subside.

ALSO READ | Explained | Silicon Valley Bank crisis: Did US central bank miss headwinds?

However, it is clear that the speed at which SVB, Signature Bank, and then Credit Suisse collapsed, has filled the minds of bank investors and customers with fear of a major crisis in the offing.

Social media and quick dissemination of information have led to swift movement of share prices and led customers to quickly pull out their deposits.

In just 48 hours, SVB announced the sale of its bond portfolio at a loss and then its collapse.

In Credit Suisse's case, Switzerland’s central bank pumped in an emergency loan last week which initially kept the bank afloat and soothed the market. However, by the weekend, the bank needed to be saved.

What are central banks doing to avert it?

A strategy was announced by various central banks to maintain the flow of money through the global economy to help avoid the credit crunch which was gripping markets during the financial crisis.

Headed by the US Federal Reserve, the initiative will make it possible for other central banks to obtain US dollars more easily which they can distribute to commercial banks in their respective countries.

The strategy has been designed so that it can ultimately flow through to borrowers who require access to credit for businesses, investments and mortgages.

The mechanism to ensure such a money flow is called a swap line which refers to agreements reached between two central banks for exchanging currencies. Till the end of April, daily and not weekly currency swaps will be offered by the Federal Reserve to ensure that adequate US dollars are with central banks in Canada, Britain, Japan, and Switzerland as well as the eurozone to operate.

The banks have designed the changes to avoid any credit crunch, a situation which leads to the tightening up of the global banking system and makes it tougher for businesses and consumers to get a loan.

The central bank of Australia has not been included in the initiative. It was indicated that the banking sector of Australia is robust despite the crisis looming in Europe and the United States.

What lies in future?

Even after Credit Suisse's imminent fall, the European Central Bank (ECB) decided to hike interest rates by 50 basis points last week. On March 22, the US Fed will be unveiling its monetary policy review.

The Fed as well as other central banks have been extremely concerned about the financial system getting frozen and banks facing a deep financial crisis. Increasing interest rates in such a scenario can be seen as a risky step as it will further increase borrowing costs.

However, if the Fed takes a pause to fight against inflation, the problem may worsen even further. So the future will depend on how the Fed looks at the situation.

If the Fed finds the banking and financial system as essentially robust, then it can easily handle a few faltering banks by giving them liquidity support then it can take the decision to follow its path of monetary tightening and possibly increase interest rates by 25 basis points and not by 50 basis points.

If the Fed finds the financial system in grave danger, it may pause.

Whatever steps the Fed may take, more turmoil is likely to come in the days ahead, especially in terms of stock market behaviour.

An American aid worker held hostage by terrorists in Niger for the last six years has been freed, President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Monday.

The US thanks Niger for its help in bringing him home to all who miss & love him. I thank so many across our government who’ve worked tirelessly toward securing his freedom,” tweeted Sullivan.

More than 400 rebels were given life sentences in Chad on Tuesday following former ruler Idriss Deby Itno's death, who was killed in 2021, said a public prosecutor.

After the end of a mass trial, the rebels were sentenced for "acts of terrorism, mercenarism, recruitment of child soldiers and assaulting the head of state," stated Mahamat El-Hadj Abba Nana, prosecutor for the capital N'Djamena.

He refused to reveal the detailed figure of the rebels imprisoned, stating that only "more than 400 were sentenced" to life, while officials acquitted 24 other defendants.

Last month, the trial opened behind closed doors at Klessoum prison which is located 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of the capital.

In the early months of 2021, an offensive was launched by the main rebel group of the country, the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), in the north of the country from its bases located in Libya.

On April 20, the army announced that Marshal Deby, the iron-fisted ruler of Chad for the previous three decades, had succumbed to the wounds which he had sustained in the fighting.

The officials announced his death just a day after his victory in a presidential election was announced which gave him a sixth term in office.

One of his sons General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno immediately succeeded him as he took the charge of a 15-member military junta.

Chad: 400 rebels imprisoned for life after death of ruler

The US Supreme Court is set to witness a trademark battle over a poop-themed dog toy which is set to be shaped like the whiskey bottle of Jack Daniel's. The case will redefine how constitutional free speech rights are applied by the judiciary to trademark law.

The case will be argued on Wednesday. The nine justices are likely to clarify the line between a parody, which is protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution, and a trademark-infringing ripoff in this legal dogfight. The court is likely to give a ruling by June end.

Jack Daniel's Properties Inc is appealing against the decision of a lower court that the VIP Products LLC's "Bad Spaniels" chew toy is an "expressive work" which has received protection by the Constitution's First Amendment.

Concern has been expressed by some companies that the court's ruling against Jack Daniel's claim would badly affect their control over their reputations and brands. Meanwhile, others believe that if the court delivers a ruling in favour of the whiskey maker, it would stifle free-speech rights.

"This is an interesting case because it's a court that does care about the First Amendment but also cares about business. And this is a case where those interests intersect in a way that's kind of hard to sort out," stated Elizabeth Brannen, who works as a partner at the law firm Stris & Maher and has appeared in intellectual property cases before the Supreme Court.

The toy looks like Lynchburg, the famous whiskey bottles of Tennessee-based Jack Daniel with humorous dog-themed alterations and has just changed "Old No. 7" with "the Old No. 2, on your Tennessee Carpet" and altered the alcohol descriptions with "43 per cent Poo By Vol." and "100 per cent Smelly".

"Jack Daniel's loves dogs and appreciates a good joke as much as anyone. But Jack Daniel's likes its customers even more, and doesn't want them confused or associating its fine whiskey with dog poop," the company stated to the justices in a brief.

VIP Products stated that if the ruling is delivered in favour of Jack Daniel, it would make it easier to stifle free speech for trademark owners.

"Every First Amendment case has a spillover effect into other areas," said VIP's attorney Ben Cooper of the firm Dickinson Wright. "So this can't be seen as being compartmentalised into the world of trademarks," he added.

"Whenever one person's speech is limited, it gets everyone else nervous," Cooper stated.

VIP said that its toy comments on "iconic alcohol brands' self-serious bombardment of consumers with advertising and dog owners' joyful humanisation of their pets".

US Supreme Court to hear free speech case over poop-themed dog toy in Jack Daniel's case

Thailand's "shopping mall gorilla", who has remained in the cage for the last 30 years, is not likely to get freedom even after a row recently re-ignited over her captivity.

Around the world, activists have been campaigning for the mammal to be moved from Pata Zoo, which is on top of a Bangkok mall. The campaign also received the support of singer Cher and actor Gillian Anderson in 2020.

However, the family which owns the gorilla "Bua Noi", meaning "little lotus", has resisted the pressure from the government and people to relinquish the critically endangered mammal.

For more than three decades, the gorilla has been living at Pata but her case again made headlines this month after a reward of 100,000 baht ($2,800) was offered by the zoo for information which will lead to the arrest of anyone who graffitied "Free Bua Noi!" on one of the walls of the mall.

The news comes at a time when tourists are being welcomed back by Thailand after the pandemic, many drawn to the wildlife of the kingdom.

New environmental legislation, which generally targets preventing native-born animals' abuse, has been passed by the authorities and privately owned zoos like Pata and non-indigenous creatures like Bua Noi are not necessarily covered under these laws.

"(Pata) can still open because the wild animal conservation and protection act zoo section has not been enforced yet," said Padej Laithong, director of the national wildlife conservation office.

The officials monitor animal welfare regulations at only eight state-linked zoos, and with growing private facilities, worries have increased about them fulfilling necessary licensing requirements.

Pata had applied for an extension of licence before its expiry, said Padej, adding that his main concern was about the fire safety of the building and not the welfare of animals.

"All of these details must be answered before the license can be renewed, suspended or revoked," he stated.
