In a draft document, Pentagon officials last week suggested that aliens may be visiting our solar system and releasing tiny probes similar to the mission which NASA conducts to study other planets.

The draft report of the research was authored by the director of the Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) Sean Kirkpatrick and Harvard University astronomy department's chairman Abraham Loeb and emphasised the unidentified aerial phenomena's physical constraints.

“An artificial interstellar object could potentially be a parent craft that releases many small probes during its close passage to Earth, an operational construct not too dissimilar from NASA missions,” read the report.

“These ‘dandelion seeds’ could be separated from the parent craft by the tidal gravitational force of the Sun or by a manoeuvring capability,” it added.

In July 2022, the AARO was established and given the responsibility to track the objects present in space, sky and underwater and even objects which may have shifted from one domain to another.

NASA was given the task of finding about 90 per cent of objects present near Earth which are larger than 140 meters in 2005, which led to Pan-STARRS telescopes, as per the report.

An unusual interstellar object was detected by Pan-STARRS on October 19, 2017, which was later named ‘Oumuamua', or scout in Hawaiian.

The object was shaped like a cigar and appeared flat and was propelled away from the sun without displaying a cometary tail which made scientists believe it was artificial.

Another object was discovered three years later, noted the report which was called NASA’s rocket booster 2020 SO and had no cometary trail.

The report added that six months before ‘Oumuamua' came closer to the Earth, another meter-sized interstellar meteor called IM2 had crashed on the Earth, showing similar speed relative to the Sun at large distances and looking like the ‘Oumuamua'.

“With proper design, these tiny probes would reach the Earth or other solar system planets for exploration, as the parent craft passes by within a fraction of the Earth-Sun separation — just like ‘Oumuamua’ did,” the authors stated.

“Astronomers would not be able to notice the spray of mini probes because they do not reflect enough sunlight for existing survey telescopes to notice them,” they added.

Aliens watching us through tiny probes, suggest Pentagon officials

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves warned that more storms and severe weather ahead after the devastating tornadoes killed 26 people. Governor Reeves said that many parts of the state are facing significant risks. Hundreds of citizens were displaced due to the tornadoes which tore through Alabama and Mississippi in the United States on Friday night.

The mayor of one of the worst-hit towns said that some of his personal friends were also killed in the natural disaster.

The tornado that came on Friday was the deadliest among all the tornadoes which have hit Mississippi in more than 10 years. Around 25 people lost their lives in the state while one person was confirmed dead in the neighbouring state of Alabama.

Trucks were overturned into houses, trees were uprooted and power lines were broken by the tornado which was classified as “violent”.

Some volunteers came from the neighbouring state of Louisiana, Tennessee and Arkansas to help the locals in the clean-up operation. A state of emergency was declared by United States President Joe Biden and federal resources were deployed to accelerate the work of rescue and response in some of the towns which were worst hit.

Crews have been working to remove the fallen trees which have pinned down the power lines because of which thousands have been living in darkness since Friday. A few stations have been established outside some buildings which are standing partially for the survivors to collect sandwiches and water.

However, as local communities are working towards providing a swift response, warnings have been issued for the severe storm ahead.

Addressing a press conference held in Rolling Fork, Governor Reeves said, "What we've seen, much like the storm that occurred Friday night, is in the 24-36 hours that are leading up to this afternoon, it appears that the risks seem to be getting worse and worse, not better.”

"And when you stand here and see this, what feels like a beautiful weather day in Mississippi, please be aware and please know: if you are south of I-55 in Mississippi today there are significant risks. We are prepared,” he added.

The governor stated that it was "heartbreaking" to see the devastation and loss caused by the tornadoes, however, he added that he was "damn proud to be a Mississippian" after seeing how swiftly locals responded to the disaster.

"Because Mississippians have done what Mississippians do. In times of tragedy, in times of crisis, they stand up and they show up, and they're here to help themselves, help their neighbours,” he said.

Mississippi braces for more storms after being routed by devastating tornado

The United States opens its second Summit for Democracy on Tuesday where it will be seeking a united front against authoritarianism in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and China launching the diplomatic offensive.

US President Joe Biden had taken the office with a pledge to champion democracy and made a good start in the first year with the inaugural summit which was aimed at reaffirming the leadership of the country after the democratic norms were eroded by his predecessor Donald Trump with the attack on the Capitol.

This year, considering the concerns about too much US navel-gazing in the first edition, Biden has brought in co-hosts on each continent - the presidents of South Korea, Zambia and Costa Rica and the prime minister of The Netherlands.

In total, 121 leaders have been invited by Biden for the three-day summit, which will mostly be held virtually.

The summit is taking place as threats to democracy evolve "from what was seen as an important issue, albeit sort of a slow-moving threat, to one that is now both important and extremely urgent," stated Marti Flacks, director of human rights initiative at Centre for Strategic and International Studies.

The session will bring together representatives of civil society for discussions on various challenges to democracy which include surveillance technology, which has been seen as a growing threat by the United States as China continues to make rapid advances in technology.

"In the absence of pending congressional action in that space, it is important that the administration is engaging bilaterally with other countries and also with companies on voluntary actions that can be taken in the interim," Flacks added.

The summit will start on Tuesday with a virtual conversation on the issue of peace which will feature Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud along with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian have decided to hold talks during the ongoing holy month of Ramadan, which is important for Muslims, stated the Saudi state news agency SPA on Monday, under an agreement to restore ties.

The two ministers spoke over the phone for the second time in a few days, said SPA.

“During the call, a number of common issues were discussed in light of the tripartite agreement that was signed in the People’s Republic of China. The two ministers also agreed to hold a bilateral meeting between them during the ongoing month of Ramadan,” SPA stated.

Analysts said that both countries will benefit from de-escalation as Iran aims to undercut the efforts of the United States to isolate it in the region and the focus of Saudi Arabia has been on economic development.

Arunachal Pradesh which is India's northeastern state has long been part of a border dispute as China continues to claim that the state is a part of Tibet. Such claims have been rejected by India in the past as it continues to claim Arunachal as an integral part of the country.

Around 50 delegates participated in the meeting which is one among many events being planned across 50 major cities before the G20 summit which will be held in the month of September in India's capital New Delhi.

Currently, India holds the G20 presidency. It still remains unclear if a protest has been officially lodged by China against India over the meeting.

No comments were made by China or India's foreign ministry so far. The meeting, which was held at the weekend, was declared confidential and no media coverage of the event was allowed.

The meeting which was held under the theme 'Research innovation initiative, gathering' was organised by the Science and Technology department.

The delegates who participated in the meeting also visited the legislative assembly of Arunachal Pradesh as well as a Buddhist monastery in Itanagar. On their arrival, the delegates were welcomed by the cultural troupes at the airport. The delegates also tasted local cuisines, officials said.

According to the calculation on a leaked memo of billionaire Elon Musk, the worth of Twitter is less than half of what he spent to buy it six months ago, reflecting that Musk faced a loss of more than $20 billion (£16.4 billion) in value.

In the memo, Musk suggested to the staff of the social media company that it is now valued at less than $20 billion. Comparing this with the hefty amount of $44 billion with which he bought the company in October 2022 clearly shows the loss he is facing.

The steep devaluation of the company follows the turbulent takeover by Musk. The platform was left by various large advertisers. Investment firm Fidelity which worked as a major source of funds for Musk in purchasing the company has written down its stake's value by 56 per cent.

The measure of Twitter's worth was based on the offer of Musk stock grants, as per the Platformer and the Information which was the first one to report about the memo.

Stock grants, which are normally used as a way to incentivise employees, are an opportunity to purchase shares that cannot be sold till a set point in time, as opposed to the stock options, which – on the basis of the applied conditions – can remain flexible.

It is aimed at encouraging staff to meet a set valuation by a given point in time so that the shares for cash can be sold. The stock grants can be “sold every six months, based on a third party valuation”, read another internal email sent to Twitter staff.

Kenyans were preparing for a fresh round of anti-government protests over the increasing cost of living on Monday after the opposition promised to take action even after a police ban.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga appealed to citizens to take to the streets every Thursday and Monday, a week after the protests had turned violent and various parts of Nairobi were paralysed.

However, on Sunday, the police announced a ban on the rallies. "We will not allow violent demonstrations," said Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

"The demonstrations they plan tomorrow (Monday) are illegal and will not be allowed,” he added.

A university student was killed and 31 officers had suffered injuries in a police fire during the previous Monday's clashes as running battles took place between demonstrators and riot police in Nairobi as well as opposition strongholds in western Kenya.

Police arrested around 200 people which included various senior opposition politicians while protesters, including their own convoy of Odinga, were hit with water cannons and tear gas.

This was the first major political unrest since incumbent President William Ruto came to power around six months ago after Odinga was defeated in an election that his rivals alleged was "stolen".

Even after the police ban, Odinga appealed to the Kenyans on Sunday to take part in what he called “the mother of all demonstrations".

"I want to tell Ruto and the IG Koome that we are not going to be intimidated. We are not going to fear tear gas and police,” he added. President Ruto appealed to his rival to stop the action.

"I am telling Raila Odinga that if he has a problem with me, he should face me and stop terrorising the country," he stated on Thursday.

Kenya prepares for fresh protests amid police ban

Saudi National Bank's chairman Ammar al-Khudairy resigned days after the Credit Suisse buyout which took place earlier this month, as per the statement released by the Saudi stock exchange.

Saudi National Bank was Credit Suisse's main shareholder before its collapse. The Saudi bank's board of directors "accepted the resignation" of Ammar al-Khudairy "due to personal reasons", read the statement.

Disciplinary action against Credit Suisse

Meanwhile, Swiss financial regulator FINMA stated that managers of Credit Suisse may face disciplinary action after the second largest bank in Switzerland was rescued by UBS last week.

Speaking to Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag, FINMA President Marlene Amstad said that it was "still open" whether they will start new proceedings, however, the main focus of the regulator was on "the transitional phase of integration" and "preserving financial stability".

Responding to whether FINMA is considering holding current managers of Credit Suisse accountable for the bank's fall, Amstad stated that it is "exploring the options".

"CS had a cultural problem that translated into a lack of responsibilities," said Amstad, adding, "Numerous mistakes were made over several years".

Six public "enforcement proceedings" have been conducted by FINMA against Credit Suisse in recent years, said Amstad. "We have intervened and used our strongest instruments," she added.

Amstad further defended the decision of Switzerland to write down Credit Suisse Additional Tier 1 (AT1) debt's 16 billion Swiss francs to zero which was part of the forced rescue merger.

"The AT1 instruments contractually provide that they will be fully written off in the event of a trigger event, in particular the granting of extraordinary government support," said Amstad.

"The bonds were created precisely for such situations,” she added.

Saudi National Bank chair steps down post Credit Suisse collapse

In a huge political blow to Taiwan, China and Honduras announced the establishment of formal diplomatic relations on Sunday, as Taipei accused Beijing of using "coercion and intimidation" to lure away a few of its allies.

The announcement was made by China shortly after Tegucigalpa officially severed its diplomatic ties with Taipei.

"China and Honduras just established diplomatic relations," Hua Chunying, spokeswoman for the Chinese foreign ministry, tweeted.

Earlier on Saturday, Honduras announced that it has ended its diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a move which drew Taipei's immediate rebuke as Tegucigalpa changed its allegiance to China.

Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina said that after receiving instructions from President Xiomara Castro he "has communicated to Taiwan the decision to cease diplomatic relations," stated a ministry in a statement.

The formal announcement of severing diplomatic ties came two days after FM Reina's Beijing trip to discuss bilateral diplomatic ties' establishment, and 11 days after the switch was first announced by Castro.

Self-ruled democratic Taiwan is considered by China as part of its own territory and which it plans to retake one day, even by force, if required. As per the 'One China' policy, countries are not allowed to recognise both Taipei and Beijing.

"The government of the Republic of Honduras recognises the existence of only 'one China' in the world, and that the government of the People's Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China," said the Honduras foreign ministry on Saturday.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. As of this date, the government of Honduras has communicated to Taiwan the rupture of diplomatic relations, committing to no longer having any relationship or contact of an official nature with Taiwan," it stated.

Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen claimed that the switch was "part of a series of China's coercion and intimidation". "China has suppressed the international space of (Taiwan) for a long time, unilaterally endangering regional peace and stability," stated a statement released by her office.

Confirming the breaking of ties, Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu accused China has offered "financial incentives" to lure away the country's allies.

"After our negotiations with (Honduras) came to no avail we have decided to terminate diplomatic relations effective immediately to maintain our national sovereignty and dignity. We will end all cooperation projects and close our embassy,” he said.

Wu emphasised that Taiwan views itself as an "independent sovereign country". "Our country will not succumb to the pressure and intimidation by the Chinese authoritarian government, and we will uphold the values of freedom and democracy," he stated.

The move of Honduras came after ending negotiations with China on constructing a hydroelectric dam in the country. Wu announced that Taipei was ending ties with Honduras after the announcement of Reina.

The official account of the Taiwan's ministry of foreign affairs tweeted, “With deep regret we announce the termination of diplomatic relations with Honduras. 82 years of friendship & cooperation bringing real benefit to the peoples were dismissed by the Castro government. Taiwan remains unbowed & continues to work as a force for good in the world.”

Taiwan had recalled its ambassador to Honduras Vivia Chang who arrived home on Saturday (March 25) in protest against the expected switch in diplomatic recognition.

With the switch, Taiwan is left with 13 nations that recognise the country formally over China after losing many Latin American allies in recent years.

In big blow to Taiwan, decades-old ally Honduras establishes diplomatic ties with China

An asteroid, which was huge enough to destroy a city, silently made its way from between the orbits of the Earth and the Moon, missing both the planet and its satellite.

The scientists discovered the space rock, named 2023 DZ2, a month ago.

As predicted by astronomers, the asteroid flew past the Earth from a distance of 175,000km on Saturday after passing across the Moon.

This is one rare occasion when such a massive asteroid – which has been estimated to be between 40 and 90 m in diameter – passes from such a close distance to the planet.

The event has been described by astronomers as a once-in-a-decade event.

As per NASA, the event became an important opportunity for scientists and astronomers to expand their knowledge of asteroids, at a time when another space rock was discovered which was carrying the potential to hit Earth.

"There is no chance of this 'city killer' striking Earth, but its close approach offers a great opportunity for observations," European Space Agency's planetary defence chief Richard Moissl said.

Moissl added that, according to the preliminary data, 2023 DZ2 was "a scientifically interesting object". However, he added that they needed more data to determine the composition of the asteroid.

Since the asteroid passed so close to the Earth, it was visible through small telescopes and binoculars across the globe.

The Virtual Telescope Project provided a live web broadcast of the asteroid's approach.

The space rock is likely to return towards the orbit of Earth in 2026, however, scientists have ruled out any threat to Earth even during its return.

Earlier an asteroid of similar size named, 2023 DW, was predicted to have a one-in-432 chance of crashing on Earth's surface on Valentine's Day 2046.

Moissl said that 2023 DW is likely to miss Earth by around 4.3 million km. However, even if such a massive asteroid is heading towards the Earth, the planet is no longer defenceless.

In 2022, a pyramid-sized asteroid Dimorphos was deliberately slammed by NASA's Dart (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft.

'City killer' asteroid comes closer than Moon, Earth remains unharmed

A Pacific expedition is being planned by a prominent Harvard physicist to find what he believes to be an alien artefact which has fallen from space into the ocean.

Physicist Avi Loeb announced that an ocean expedition worth $1.5 million to Papua New Guinea is being organised by him in search of fragments of an object which crashed off the coast of the country's Manus Island in 2014.

The object was noticed by Loeb in 2019 and it was identified as the first ever discovered interstellar meteor, which means its origin lies outside our solar system.

As per Loeb, the interstellar origin of the meteor was confirmed to NASA by the Department of Defence’s space command in April 2022.

Loeb and his team also reached the conclusion that the meteor was tougher compared to all other 272 meteors listed in the Centre for Near Earth Object Studies catalogue of NASA.

“Intrigued by this conclusion, I established a team that designed a two-week expedition to search for the meteor fragments at a depth of 1.7km on the ocean floor. Analysing the composition of the fragments could allow us to determine whether the object is natural or artificial in origin,” wrote Loeb in a post on Medium.

“We have a boat. We have a dream team, including some of the most experienced and qualified professionals in ocean expeditions. We have complete design and manufacturing plans for the required sledge, magnets, collection nets and mass spectrometer,” he further stated.

As per Loeb, there is a possibility that the meteor is tough “because they are artificial in origin…launched a billion years ago from a distant technological civilisation.”

People often go through multiple emotions as they feel euphoric, intense and giddy at the same time when they fall in love.

However, a lot of them suffer physical pain too when their heart breaks due to the failure of their relationship or the sudden death of their loved ones.

Experts say that the physical pain one experiences due to heartbreak is very real and actually has a scientific explanation.

According to a report published by Live Science, the painful heartbreaks have a physiological explanation and the symptoms are not only the mind's play, stated Dr Deborah Lee, a medical writer for the Dr Fox Online Pharmacy in England.

"When you fall in love, there is a natural outpouring of hormones. These include the 'cuddle' hormone oxytocin and the 'feel-good' hormone dopamine," Dr Lee said.

"But when you fall out of love, levels of oxytocin and dopamine drop, while at the same time there is an increase in levels of one of the hormones responsible for stress - cortisol," she explained.

According to the doctor, the increased cortisol levels can lead to conditions like weight gain, increased anxiety, high blood pressure and acne.

Social rejection like getting separated from your partner also activates a few parts of the brain which are related to physical pain, she said.

As per the report, in a few cases, the pain due to a broken heart can also be a medical condition called “Takotsubo cardiomyopathy” or the “broken heart syndrome” which is a heart condition that lasts for short-duration triggered by physical or emotional stress.

The condition leads to a change in the way blood is pumped by the heart and sometimes makes the heart pump blood harder, due to which the person experiences chest pain.

Broken heart syndrome's symptoms are similar to that of a heart attack, which makes it difficult for doctors and patients to differentiate between the two.

In various cases, the only way doctors can diagnose broken heart syndrome is by carrying out heart catheterisation or coronary angiogram, in which they insert a small catheter through the arm, groin, or neck and take it to the heart.

After a contrast dye is injected into the chamber of the heart, its effectiveness can be evaluated by physicians.

Typically, severe stressors cause broken heart syndrome and usually, it occurs only once. Most of its patients suffer pain for some days or weeks, but in a few cases, it has resulted in death.
