Karim Benzema struck for Real Madrid to clinch a 1-0 win over Liverpool and qualification for the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday 6-2 on aggregate.

After the wild last 16 first leg clash at Anfield in February left Madrid sitting pretty with a three-goal advantage, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said his side only had a one per cent chance of turning the tie around.

They stemmed the bleeding at the Santiago Bernabeu but never looked like mounting a stirring comeback of the type they managed against Barcelona in 2019, or AC Milan in the 2005 final.

Madrid have now knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League in three consecutive seasons, including beating them in last year's final.

The 14-time record winners showed the nous to keep Liverpool at arm's length, with defenders Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger determined to shut out the visitors, along with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Reigning champions Madrid could have significantly stretched their lead, save for a series of superb stops by Liverpool stopper Alisson Becker and some unusually profligate finishing.

In the first leg, Madrid were lethal, with Vinicius Junior and Benzema netting twice each - neither had their shooting boots on in the Spanish capital.

Eventually they combined for Madrid's winner after 78 minutes, with Vinicius slipping as he tried to shoot, but managing to hook the ball into Benzema's path for a simple tap-in.

Madrid's only worry was seeing their captain limp off after his goal amid an injury-hit season.

Liverpool, wildly inconsistent in this campaign, took heart from their 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United in the Premier League, but could not produce the same magic under the Bernabeu lights.

Klopp started with Diogo Jota alongside his usual attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo, deploying as much firepower as he could to try and mount a comeback.

The first chance of the game fell to Nunez but Courtois thwarted the Uruguayan, who was fed by Salah. At the other end Madrid sliced open Liverpool but Toni Kroos could not find Benzema, back after missing the win over Espanyol in La Liga on Saturday with an ankle problem.

Vinicius did produce a superb pass to feed the French striker, but Benzema miscontrolled and could not get a shot away.

The hosts began to dominate, running rings around James Milner and Fabinho in midfield, and Alisson made a stunning save to deny Vinicius from point-blank range.

Eduardo Camavinga, selected over Aurelien Tchouameni in defensive midfield by Ancelotti, crashed a long-range effort against the crossbar, with Alisson getting his fingertips to it.

The Brazilian goalkeeper denied Vinicius at his near post after he got in behind Trent Alexander-Arnold - not for the first time - and watched a Luka Modric drive fly narrowly over.

Liverpool showed signs of life near the end of the first half, with Nunez forcing Courtois into a full length stop with a curling effort.

However Madrid were on top at the start of the second half and Alisson foiled Fede Valverde as he ran through on goal, before fielding a tame Benzema follow-up.

Camavinga impressed in midfield and helped create Benzema's goal, with a drive forward pass in the build-up.

The striker has now scored seven times in the Champions League against Liverpool, more than any other player.

Benzema is key to Madrid's bid to lift the trophy for a sixth time in 10 seasons, if he can stay fit.

Paris, the city of romance, is turning into a garbage dump as tonnes of stinking garbage continue to pile up on the city's sidewalks as sanitation workers continue their strike for the ninth day on Tuesday.

The increasing amount of garbage has become a clear sign of the widespread anger among workers over a bill to increase the French retirement age by two years.

The bins are overflowing and the food rotting in some of the rubbish bags is making the city stink. Till Tuesday, more than 7,000 tonnes of garbage was piling up on the roads of the city.

"It's dirty, it attracts rats and cockroaches," complained one Parisian on French radio. The workers have been on a strike over the proposal of the Emmanuel Macron government to increase the pension age from 62 to 64.

Apart from Paris, cities like Rennes, Le Havre and Nantes, Rennes have also been affected by the strike. The pension strikes were joined by the refuse collectors a week ago and the authorities of Paris said that half of the districts of the city, which fall under the council workers, have been badly hit by the action.

The strikers have blocked three waste treatment sites and a fourth remains partially closed. Paris council stated that in the 10 districts, which fall under private companies, the services have been running normally.

In a world where 25 hours on average are being spent by executives every week attending meetings, a recent survey suggests that offices can run smoothly even after cutting down those video calls and project updates to half.

The survey was conducted on around 10,000 desk workers by Future Forum, a research consortium supported by Salesforce Inc-owned Slack Technologies.

The study revealed that business leaders have been attending many unproductive meetings with the hope that it would be a good use of their working hours, but it ultimately wasn't.

The meetings are also attended by employees to show their manager that they are working and because they don't want to miss something important, the survey found.

For the employees in the lower position, the reason for attending the meetings is that they don't have a choice. The study's findings come at a time when various organisations are making efforts to understand which meetings are really important and which ones need to be jettisoned in a growing hybrid workplace where staffers are not always present at the same location.

Canadian e-commerce site Shopify Inc said that it is working to eliminate 320,000 hours of meetings in 2023 by suspending all recurring meetings that are held with more than two people, making Wednesday a “no-meetings” day and putting a limit on large gatherings while encouraging employees to decline some invites.

Another survey suggested that around $100 million is wasted every year on non-critical meetings at big organisations, which also found that workers decline only 14 per cent of invites even though they are willing to back out from 31 per cent of them.

Brian Elliott, a Slack executive who oversees the research of Future Forum, said, "There's no one-size-fits-all approach to eliminating unnecessary meetings. So get comfortable with experimenting and iterating."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the response of Germany to the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosions shows that the country is still "occupied" and not able to independently act decades after it surrendered at the climax of World War Two.

In an interview on Russian television, Putin said that the leaders in European countries have been browbeaten into losing their sense of independence and sovereignty.

Western nations, including Germany, have declined to comment on who they think was responsible for the blasts.

"The matter is that European politicians have said themselves publicly that after World War Two, Germany was never a fully sovereign state," Putin was quoted saying.

"The Soviet Union at one point withdrew its forces and ended what amounted to an occupation of the country. But that, as is well known, was not the case with the Americans. They continue to occupy Germany,” he added.

Putin claimed that the blasts on the Nord Stream gas pipelines were carried out on a "state level" and called the suggestions that it was carried out by an autonomous pro-Ukraine group "complete nonsense".

"One should always look for those who are interested. And who is interested? Theoretically, of course, the United States is interested. An explosion of this kind, of this power, at this depth, can only be carried out by specialists, and supported by the full power of the state, which has certain technologies," Putin stated.

OpenAI, the San Francisco-based tech company that took the world by storm with its ChatGPT, on Tuesday announced that it is releasing a new version of artificial intelligence software which can see.

The new software called 'GPT-4' “can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy, thanks to its broader general knowledge and problem-solving abilities,” as per an announcement made on OpenAI’s website.

In the video shared by the company online, it stated that GPT-4 is armed with various capabilities which were not present in the previous iteration of the technology, like the ability to “reason” based on images which have been uploaded by the users.

OpenAI stated that in the bar exam in which US law-school graduates appear before professional practice, the new version scored in the top 10 per cent of test takers, while the older version was ranked below 10 per cent.

Although the two versions appear similar to each other in casual conversation, "the difference comes out when the complexity of the task reaches a sufficient threshold," said OpenAI, noting that "GPT-4 is more reliable, creative, and able to handle much more nuanced instructions".

OpenAI takes artificial intelligence race to next level, launches GPT-4 that can 'see'

The Russian defence ministry on Tuesday said it scrambled fighter jets after detecting a US drone flying over the Black Sea. It, however, refuted Washington's allegations of crashing it into the sea.

"As a result of a sharp manoeuvre... the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle entered an uncontrolled flight with the loss of altitude and collided with the surface of the water," stated the ministry. It further said its fighter jets "did not use their on-board weapons, made no contact with the UAV."

The Russian ambassador was summoned by the United States to protest the crash of the American drone on Tuesday over the Black Sea after it collided with a Russian warplane, the State Department said.

US forced to crash drone: Pentagon

The Pentagon confirmed that the US military was forced to crash its MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drone as it was brutally damaged after being struck by a Russian jet.

"Because of the damage, we were in a position to have to essentially crash into the Black Sea," said Brigadier General Pat Ryder, adding the drone, after the damage, was basically unflyable.

Ryder said that the crashed drone has not been recovered by Russia. The Pentagon said that the drone's propeller was struck by one of the Russian Su-27 jets, making it inoperable.
