Without taking the name of Pakistan's former prime minister, his former wife Reham Khan said that she does not have any personal vendetta against anyone and her concern is only limited to the safety of Pakistanis.

The comment was made by Reham Khan hours after former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was dramatically arrested in a corruption case.

"Individuals have been used by external forces to cripple the economy & create anarchy throughout our chequered history. We need to change our course," wrote Reham Khan.

"It is not a moment to rejoice but a moment to reflect. Those who celebrated in 2018 are mourning today," Reham wrote hours after Pakistan was rocked by violent protests carried out by supporters of Imran Khan against his arrest.

The court further directed Khan to approach the Islamabad High Court (IHC). The directives were issued by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial after the court resumed hearing Khan's plea against his arrest in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Khan will now spend the night in Islamabad Police's guest house where he will be allowed to meet 10 people.

Before Khan was produced in front of the court, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) stated that it "will do its best to keep Imran Khan under custody for at least four to five days".

“We will seek the maximum physical remand of 14 days from the court," the news agency PTI quoted a NAB source as saying.

The police had detained Imran Khan from NAB's Rawalpindi regional headquarter. Even though his party workers alleged that Khan was wounded in the process of the arrest, NAB stated that Khan won't be treated harshly and will only go through questioning over his alleged involvement in the case.

The customers of the Uber application in the United Kingdom will soon be able to book flight tickets through the ride-booking app, as the company aims to offer various forms of transport to its customers.

The new feature which allows consumers to book international and domestic flights is being rolled out on the UK application of Uber and will be available to all users in Britain by the summer.

Uber stated the function of flight booking was part of its ambition to “create a seamless door-to-door travel solution” alongside the car ride-sharing function, for which it was first known.

The company has entered into a partnership with online travel agent Hopper which will allow users to book flights and in return, it will receive a small commission from every sale.

"The addition of flights to the Uber app is a big win for UK consumers who are looking for an easier way to book travel," stated Frederic Lalonde, CEO and co-founder of Hopper, in a press release.

"This new partnership will offer Uber users choice, transparency and flexibility when booking flights, all in the same place they are already booking their other transportation," he added.

Meanwhile, Uber's general manager in UK Andrew Brem said, “Our new functionality will make the booking and managing of air travel simple and stress-free, with the booking process taking as little as one minute.”

Uber’s chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, stated that he had planned to make his company “an operating system for everyday life” in 2019 when the ride-hailing application was merged with Uber Eats food delivery services.

He added that a feature was also added in the application to highlight local public transport options.

The tickets for these journeys can be booked through Uber’s app which permits passengers to board the riverboats by using a QR code on their phone.

A man in the Indian state of Kerala landed in a difficult situation after his wife was sent his photographs with a lady friend which was captured through the CCTV camera by the Motor Vehicle Department.

The pictures were sent by the department to inform the man regarding the violation of road safety rules. However, the wife was not irked by the violation of rules that her husband committed, but by the pictures which showed that her husband was travelling with another woman.

The photos were clicked by the safety cameras which are installed on the roads of Kerala. In the pictures captured on April 25, the man was riding a scooter without a helmet.

Since the man, an Idukki native, had registered the scooter under his wife's name, the details of traffic rules violations, the fine imposed as well as the photos were sent to her.

The husband was questioned by his wife about the woman with whom he was riding the scooter. The 32-year-old man, who works as an employee at a textile shop, claimed that he had no relationship with the lady and had only given her a lift, as reported by the news agency PTI.

The issue changed into an argument between the married couple as the wife refused to believe the explanation that her husband gave.

On May 5, a complaint was filed by the wife at the Karamana police station in which she accused the husband of manhandling her as well as their three-year-old child.

"He was taken into custody based on her statement. An arrest was recorded under IPC 321 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 294 (obscene acts) and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (assault or neglect of child)," said a police officer, speaking to PTI.

The police produced the man before the court which later remanded him in judicial custody, he added.

Google on Wednesday announced that the wait list for Bard, which was launched in March this year, has been removed.

The AI chatbot, which people in the United Kingdom and the United States earlier had limited access to, has now been opened up for 180 countries around the world.

The announcement was made by Google in its I/O developer conference where it also stated its plans to integrate it into search after a similar move was made by Microsoft with ChatGPT.

However, the complete list of territories where Bard has been made available was not published by Google, but like ChatGPT, the AI chatbot cannot be used by people in Hong Kong currently.

When attempts were made by people to access the service on Thursday, they received a message saying that “Bard isn’t currently supported in your country. Stay tuned!”

In a blog post which stated about Bard's expanded service on Wednesday, Google stated that more territories and countries are “coming soon”.

When quizzed about the absence of Bard in Hong Kong, the plans were not explained by Google for specific markets.

“Bard is in its early days – and given how new the technology is, we want to roll it out thoughtfully and responsibly,” said a Google spokeswoman in an emailed statement.

Microsoft-supported OpenAI, which is the creator of the controversial ChatGPT, has also not made its services available in Hong Kong. The company has a list of 163 markets where the AI chatbot is available.

Most of the countries not listed among the markets of ChatGPT are either sanctioned or the nations which exhibit tight internet controls like Russia, Iran, North Korea and China.

However, both ChatGPT and Bard can be accessed by people through virtual private networks (VPNs), although extra steps have been taken by OpenAI to stop this by blocking a few VPN connections and creating a requirement of a phone number to create an account.

Bard is a rival to Open AI's ChatGPT. Currently, Google is racing to catch up with Microsoft which has moved forward to integrate ChatGPT-like powers in different arrays of its products, which includes the Bing search engine.

The technology in Bard will provide features like filling in the text to help write emails and suggesting ideas for creating artwork by looking into a picture of available supplies.

Bard will also be able to hold human-like conversations and can be used for creative collaboration, like generating software code or creating a caption for a photo.

The first baby was created in the United Kingdom from the DNA of three people using a pioneering IVF procedure. The baby was developed using the process called mitochondrial donation treatment (MDT) in which the nucleus is taken from one of the eggs of the mother, which contains her DNA and is implanted into a donor egg. The donor egg's nuclei are removed but its healthy mitochondrial DNA is retained.

The process involves the creation of IVF embryos which are free from harmful mutations that are carried by their mothers and are likely to be passed onto their children. Unlike normal DNA, which contains the genetic information that helps in creating normal humans, mitochondrial DNA contains power for the cell. Researchers have drawn a comparison between the mitochondrial DNA and a battery.

Various scientists insist that the term “three-parent baby” is not accurate because more than 98.8 per cent of the child's DNA still comes from two people.

A green light was given by the UK parliament to the procedure in 2015 and requests for its use were considered by the regulatory body called the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA).

The first “three-parent child” of Britain was found in a Freedom of Information request made to the HFEA. As per reports, the clinic said that few babies have been born using MDT in the UK.

The details of the babies who have been created using the MDT programme are not released by doctors amid concerns that the confidentiality of the patient can be compromised through specific information.

The HFEA has stated that "less than five" babies were born as of 20 April 2023 using the technology. However, HFEA refused to provide precise numbers to protect the identities of the families. The details were published by The Guardian.

"News that a small number of babies with donated mitochondria have now been born in the UK is the next step, in what will probably remain a slow and cautious process of assessing and refining mitochondrial donation," stated Sarah Norcross, the director of the Progress Educational Trust.

Meanwhile, Francis Crick Research Institute's Prof Robin Lovell-Badge said, "It will be interesting to know how well the mitochondrial replacement therapy technique worked at a practical level, whether the babies are free of mitochondrial disease, and whether there is any risk of them developing problems later in life."

Britain is not the first nation where children have been born through MDT. In 2016, the same procedure was used for a child who was created in Mexico.

A spokesperson from the prosecutor's office stated that investigators have been working with the assumption that the shootout has been carried out by a single perpetrator and that it had no involvement of individuals from outside the factory.

The shooting incident was the latest in the various mass shootouts carried out in Germany in recent years, many connected to extremism.

Explosion rocks Milan, several vehicles set ablaze

A meteorite is believed to have struck the roof of a house in Hopewell Township, New Jersey, authorities said on Monday. According to officials, the metallic object suddenly crashed through the roof of the house and ricocheted around the house's bedroom.

No member of the family was present in the bedroom when the incident took place and hence, no one suffered injuries, according to the report.

Police are investigating to determine the object's precise nature, although officials suspect that the object is related to the current meteor shower, which is called the Eta Aquariids, as per the statement issued by Hopewell Township Police Department in New Jersey.

The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is a phenomenon that occurs annually in which debris belonging to the famous Halley’s Comet rains down into the atmosphere of the Earth.

According to the predictions of the Meteor Society, the celestial event was expected to peak on Saturday, though it is likely to last till May 27.

“I did touch the thing because I just thought it was a random rock,” said Suzy Kop, a member of the house on which the rock fell. Speaking to CNN affiliate KYW-TV in Philadelphia, she added that the rock fell on the roof of the bedroom that belonged to her father.

“And it was warm. I just thank God that my father was not here. No one was here. You know, we weren’t hurt or anything," she added.

The outer covering of meteorites can reach scorching temperatures because of the object's high pressure and friction as it falls into the thick atmosphere at high speed, although they generally cool down before reaching the ground.

The police authorities in New Jersey stated that the possible meteorite which struck the roof on Monday was about four inches by six inches in size.

The Indian government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that replies were sent by seven states on the issue of same-sex marriage issue. The idea was opposed by Congress-led Rajasthan and states like Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur and Sikkim demanded more time to examine the issue.

"We have received seven responses from state governments. Rajasthan has taken a position that they have examined and opposed it, while the rest say that this needs an expansive debate," said Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to the court.

Various religions and underlined Acts, which fall under the Constitution, were quoted by the opposing states to support their stand against same-sex marriage.

The Rajasthan government, opposing same-sex marriage's legalisation, said that people's sentiments were against homosexual marriages.

The provisions regarding marriage in Muslim Law, Special Marriage Act and Hindu Marriage Act were quoted by the government to justify its stand.

“Section 5 of the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA) states the essential conditions of marriage. These provisions make it clear that any matrimonial ceremony between a bride and a groom shall be valid only if the age of the groom is not less than 21 years and the age of the bride is not less than 18 years,” the state government said.

“In the Act, marriage between two persons of the opposite sex is considered valid, and the minimum age of separation has been fixed for them. Thus, marriage is a sacrament in Hinduism,” it further added.

“Son born from heterosexual marriages liberates 21 generations from sin - 10 from past generations and 10 from future generations - including self. Therefore, matrimonial belief in Hinduism is connected to the birth of a son. Marriage in Muslim law is considered a contract between man and woman," the government argued.

“Nikah (marriage) in Muslim law has three components 1. A willing couple 2. Witness, and 3. Mehr. The concepts of "mehr" and "iddat" also resolve that even in Muslim law, marriages are valid only between two persons of the opposite sex, where mehr is seen as a gift from the groom to the bride as a token of respect,” it said in its reply.

Meanwhile, the Asssam government said, “It may be said that even across cross-sections of societies, the legal understanding of marriage has been that of an agreement/contract between two persons of opposite genders."

“Marriage, divorce and ancillary subjects so related, fall under entry 5 of the Concurrent list of the Constitution and hence it is also in the domain of the state legislature in a manner that it is in the domain of Union Parliament,” it further stated.

Meanwhile, the apex court earlier stated that Indian laws permit a person to adopt a child irrespective of his/her marital status as it asserted that the law does recognise situations which may not fit in the category of an “ideal family”, where couples have their own biological children.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), in its submission, argued that the idea of gender may be “fluid” and may not be restricted to mothers and motherhood.

Heavy cross-border firing took place between the Israeli army and Palestinian militants on Wednesday, in which 20 Palestinians lost their lives in a span of two days as the coastal territory remained hit by the worst escalation of violence in months.

Smoke rose from the coastal area after Israel stated that the army is targetting the militant group's rocket launch sites.

The health ministry of Gaza said that five people died, a day after Israeli strikes over the Palestinian territory killed 15.

Sirens blared in Tel Aviv issuing a warning of incoming rocket fire in areas close to the border, reported AFP, as per the army.

Dozens of projectiles were fired in Gaza, reported AFP while the Palestinian militant factions, in a joint statement, said "hundreds of rockets" were launched.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is "ready for the possibility of an expanded campaign and harsh strikes against Gaza," in a meeting with local leaders near the coastal territory.

Israel's Magen David Adom emergency service stated that no immediate reports were received by them of casualties.

Rockets were intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defence system above the coastal city of Ashkelon and in the South, according to AFP photographers.

The latest escalation in violence took place a day after three top Palestinian militants and 12 others, which included four children, were killed in Israeli strikes over Gaza, as per a health ministry toll.

On Wednesday, Israel's military said the strikes included firing on militants "who were travelling to a rocket launch site in the city of Khan Yunis" in southern Gaza.

On Tuesday, the militants vowed to retaliate as Israel warned its residents, who were living near the border, to stay in close vicinity of bomb shelters.

Before the exchange of fire that took place on Wednesday, the bustling shops of Gaza were closed.

Residents in Gaza "expect the worst", said Monther Abdullah, aged 50. "Everyone feels anxious and people aren't on the street much. I definitely feel like there's a war coming, and there's tension and fear, whether here or there," he added.

The latest exchange of fire took place on the second anniversary of the 11-day war fought between Israel and Gaza militants.

On Wednesday, Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif Al-Qanou said, "The strikes of the unified resistance are part of the process of responding to the massacre committed by (Israel)."

WATCH | Israel PM says any escalation will meet 'crushing response,' IDF ready to act on more than one front On Wednesday, Israel's military said the strikes included firing on militants "who were travelling to a rocket launch site in the city of Khan Yunis" in southern Gaza.
