A new study has discovered that smaller and lighter-coloured butterflies are likely to face challenging times ahead as the climate of the Earth continues to warm.

Small butterflies with paler hues, unlike their different species with darker colours and larger wings, may face trouble in regulating their body temperatures with the increase in the air temperature, as per the research. The problem may enhance especially for those belonging to the Lycaenidae family.

Generally, size plays a significant role in heat tolerance for insects, however, the impact of colour is surprising and “may be a pattern specific to butterflies,” stated lead study author Esme Ashe-Jepson, who is a doctoral student of zoology at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

The butterflies which have dark wings, regardless of wing size, consistently got better outcomes throughout the research.

The findings, which were published in the Journal of Animal Ecology, provide more evidence of how bigger wings play an important role in keeping butterflies cool and how colour plays a significant role.

How butterflies maintain their temperature

Butterflies require warmth from the sun for proper functioning. However, when heat increases, the butterflies adjust their body temperature in accordance with the air temperature using strategies called thermal tolerance and thermal buffering.

Thermal buffering refers to physical acts like slanting wings out of sunlight's direct path and moving to shadier and cooler areas. Butterflies, which have larger wings, use the surface area for absorbing heat when required, but they are also able to relocate faster to a cooler area compared to small-winged butterflies, as per the study.

On the other hand, thermal tolerance involves physiological processes like the production of heat shock proteins. “These are molecules that many animals, butterflies and humans included, produce to protect themselves from high temperatures. They help to stabilise and repair proteins in your body that have been damaged by high heat,” Ashe-Jepson said.

To carry out the thermal buffering test, 1,334 butterflies, which represented 54 species from six butterfly families, were caught and tested by the researchers and then released. “My team and I spent many long days running around the rainforest in Panama with butterfly nets. Our goal was to catch a butterfly without chasing it,” Ashe-Jepson said.
Lighter-coloured butterflies at highest risk due to climate warming, say scientists

The Nazi concentration camp, which still remains on British soil, will finally be investigated as part of an official government inquiry, revealing details of horrific acts that took place inside it, reported the Observer.

Almost 80 years after one of the darkest incidents in the history of Britain unfolded, the country will be conducting a review of multiple prisoners who were brutally killed on Alderney, a tiny Channel Islands, by the Nazis.

It is now known that two of the camps were established by the SS (Schutzstaffel, or Protection Squads) during the second world war, and over the recent years, fresh evidence of the scale of barbarity carried out by the Nazis on the island has emerged.

The Meitei community in the Indian state of Mizoram has been reassured about their safety by the government on Saturday, who asked them not to pay heed to any rumours.

The assurance from the government came after reports surfaced of Meiteis leaving the state after an ‘advisory’ was issued by an ex-militant association of the state asking them to flee amid escalating tension over the viral video of women being paraded naked in Manipur.

A meeting was held by the state home commissioner and secretary H Lalengmawia with the leaders of the Meitei community during which they were assured about their security and safety, said an official statement.

PAMRA's advisory misconstrued

While holding meetings with leaders of the All Mizoram Manipuri Association (AMMA), Lalengmawia appealed to them to ask people of the Meitei community not to leave the state on the basis of the advisory which was issued by the Peace Accord MNF Returnees’ Association (PAMRA), read the statement.

The leaders were informed by him that PAMRA's press statement was misconstrued in one section of the media. A meeting was also convened by the home secretary with leaders of PAMRA who stated that they had issued the advisory to request members of the Meitei community in Mizoram to exercise caution in the wake of ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur, the statement further stated.

The home secretary was further told that the press release issued was not a diktat or a quit notice for the Meiteis.

PAMRA leaders expressed regret at the situation and said that they will not pursue their release any further so that peace and tranquillity prevail in the state.

WATCH | Manipur violence: Two women paraded naked, allegedly raped PAMRA secretary general C. Lalthenlova, earlier on Friday, expressed concern over the Meitei community's safety in Mizoram as the viral video has left many Mizo youths angry. He further stated that an appeal was issued by them as a precaution to avert any untoward incident. Meitei people flee amid mounting tension Several Meitei people have fled from their home states amid mounting tension, said the police. Around thousands of Meiteis, mostly from south Assam and Manipur, have been living in Mizoram. Mizoram deputy inspector general of Police (Northern Range) Lallianmawia said that they have tightened security in some places and institutions, which includes Zoram Medical College and Mizoram University, where a sizeable number of Meiteis come to study. “We have deployed police personnel in some areas and institutions where the Meitei people are living and regular patrolling is being done to avoid any untoward incident,” he said while speaking to PTI.
A rare “sibling” which is likely to share a similar orbit with a Jupiter-like planet around a young star has been found by astronomers.

Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array of telescopes (ALMA) has been used by researchers in Chile to observe the PDS 70 system which is located at a distance of 370 light-years from the Centaurus constellation.

Astronomers are already aware of two Jupiter-like planets, which are called PDS 70c and PDS 70b, orbiting the star. However, they have spied a cloud of debris in the orbital path of PDS 70b which can represent a new planet's building blocks which is actively forming or already formed.

The scientists feel that the planet's direct image may be the strongest evidence to date which shows that the two exoplanets can possibly share the exact same orbit. A study, in which the findings were mentioned in detail, was published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics on Wednesday (July 19).

Man hospitalised after drilling dream-controlling chip into his skull

The staff members working at an Ohio zoo were left surprised after a gorilla, which they believed to be a male for four years, gave birth on Thursday (July 20).

Columbus Zoo stated that gorilla Sully, who has been staying with them since 2019, was found with her baby on Thursday. In the blog post, the zookeepers said that the infant "appears to be healthy" and that Sully was appearing to be an excellent mother.

They further said that Sully was always in good health because of which the officials never needed to examine her which led to the confusion.

The birth "was unexpected, yet exciting for the care team and important for the conservation of a critically endangered species", said the zookeepers in a blog post.

Nothing was suspected by the zookeepers till they saw the "believed to be male" gorilla nursing her child. "It's hard to tell the sex of younger gorillas," they stated.

Gorilla not old enough to show gender

The zoo authorities said that Sully was old enough to reproduce at eight years of age, however, she was still too young to show any obvious signs of her gender.

"Until about eight, males and females are about the same size, and they don't have prominent sex organs. Males don't develop... their silver backs until 12 or later,” the authorities said.

Generally, gorillas fail to show any signs of pregnancy because of their large abdomens and infant gorillas appear significantly smaller compared to human babies.

"As the 34th gorilla born here since 1956 when the Columbus Zoo became the first zoo in the world to welcome the birth of a baby gorilla, she's an important part of our work to conserve these magnificent animals,” the authorities added.

The zoo stated that DNA tests would be conducted by them to determine the baby gorilla's father. Sully has been staying in a troop which is led by silverback Mac, 39, and also has two younger males Kamoli, 10, and JJ, six.

Despite the hiccup with Sully, the zoo stated that they are confident about the newborn's sex. "It's a girl! Our team confirmed that visually and with photographs that were also sent to a primate expert at another leading zoological facility," the zoo stated.
