The United States called the sudden withdrawal of the Israeli military's troops from the southern Gaza Strip a "rest and refit" plan and not something which indicates any new operations.&nbsp;

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby, in an interview with ABC News, said, "As we understand it, and through their public announcements, it is really just about rest and refit for these troops ... and not necessarily that we can tell indicative of some coming new operation for these troops."&nbsp;

“So we have been increasingly frustrated. And again, that was a core message that the president delivered to Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu in their phone call this … past week … that they’ve got to do more, they’ve got to make changes,” he added.

Kirby said that Netanyahu on Sunday (April 7) “assured” Biden that he will make changes in the military operations of Israel.

'Frustrated' Biden administration says Israel's withdrawal from south Gaza not indicative of new operations

Russia on Sunday (April 7) held Ukraine responsible for launching drones on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station and causing safety concerns.&nbsp;

Ukraine's military was held responsible for the attack by Russia's nuclear power corporation Rosatom and international energy officials for detonating a drone against the dome which covered the closed nuclear reactor.

As per the International Atomic Energy Agency, the unmanned device exploded near the dome of one of the reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe.

The Russian-installed administration, which was set up after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, reported the incident. According to Russian officials, no serious damage happened to the reactor and the radiation levels remained normal.

Rosatom claimed that three people were injured in the incident&nbsp;and one suffered serious injuries.&nbsp;

In a statement posted on the official Telegram channel of the plant, Russian authorities accused the Ukrainian military of using “self-exploding” drones against it.&nbsp;

“Shelling of Zaporizhzhia NPP and its infrastructure is unacceptable. No nuclear power plant in the world is designed to withstand full-fledged fire from the armed forces. Damage to infrastructure facilities may affect the safe operation of the NPP,” the statement read.

As per a Ukrainian intelligence official, Kyiv did not carry out any strikes on the station, Reuters reported.

Defense Intelligence of Ukraine spokesperson Andriy Yusov, while speaking to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, said, “The aggressor state is once again endangering the nuclear facility, civilians and the environment of the whole of Europe."

UN’s atomic watchdog agency head Rafael Grossi condemned the attack on the nuclear power plant.&nbsp;

He said that the attack was "reckless" and "a major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers" facing the plant. He further warned that such attacks “significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident”.&nbsp;

Grossi, in a statement on X, confirmed that at least three direct strikes were made against the main reactor containment structures of the plant.

In a chilling incident, a pre-medical student allegedly stabbed his mother to death, who was an elementary school teacher, since she “got on his nerves", as reported by the police in Florida.

Emmanuel Espinoza, who is a 21-year-old student pursuing a medical at the University of Florida, was going to a family event when he asked his mother Elvia Espinoza if he could stay with her during the weekend, as reported by the Daily Mail.

However, the second-grade teacher, who was 46 years old, opened the door to welcome his son on Saturday (April 6) at around 2 pm local time, but her knife-wielding son stabbed her mercilessly.

“She lived in the forest, in a very nice house, south of Frostproof,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, in a recorded statement.&nbsp;

“He knocked on the front door, and when mom opened the front door, he began to stab her. She ran from him, she was talking to a family member on the phone, and … he stabbed her until she fell down and died," he said.

US: Son stabs his mother to death since she ‘got on his nerves’: Report

The astronomical phenomenon&nbsp;of solar eclipse&nbsp;held&nbsp;great importance in ancient societies, dating back to the Mayan civilisation.&nbsp;

For Mayans, it was a bad omen which represented death and decay and to fight the evil, they indulged in bloodletting sacrifices.&nbsp;

<h2>Astronomy in Maya civilisation&nbsp;</h2>

The ancient Maya civilisation had some of the best sky-watching societies which comprised of the greatest mathematicians who kept a record of their systematic observations on the motion of the Sun, stars and planets.&nbsp;

Using the observations, the mathematicians created a complex calendar system for use in the world. The Sun and the aligned monumental structures like the pyramids were observed closely by astronomers to track solstices and equinoxes.&nbsp;

The accounts of the astronomical observations were kept by the scribes in codices which were hieroglyphic folding books made using fig bark paper.&nbsp;

The Dresden Codex is among the four remaining ancient Maya texts and dates back to the 11th century. It is filled with astronomical knowledge as well as religious interpretations and has evidence which proves Mayans could predict solar eclipses.

<h2>Why did Mayans track the astronomical event?</h2>

The Mayans maintained accounts of astronomical phenomena so that they remained forewarned and took proper precautions when something happened.&nbsp;

The kings and priests would then perform rituals and make sacrifices to the gods&nbsp;to ensure that the cycles of destruction, rebirth and renewal continue.

The Mayans believed that sunsets were related to death and decay. As per their belief system, the sun god "Kinich Ahau" took the perilous journey through the Mayan underworld "Xibalba" after sunset and took birth at sunrise. &nbsp;

However, they saw the solar eclipse as a "broken sun" which hinted at the sign of cataclysmic destruction.

When the Sun got hidden behind the Moon, the Mayans believed that it was dying and it was said that renewal rituals were important to restore nature's balance and bring him back on his cycle.

Hence, the civilisation's nobility and kings performed bloodletting sacrifices in which they would pierce their bodies and collect the blood drops which were then burnt as offerings to the Sun god.&nbsp;

The offering of the "blood of kings" was said to be the highest form of sacrifice which was aimed at strengthening Kinich Ahau.&nbsp;

According to the Mayan belief system, the creator gods sacrificed their blood and added it to maize dough to create the first humans. The nobility in turn was expected to give their blood to the god to nourish them and bring them back to life.&nbsp;

Solar Eclipse: Mayans used to offer blood to 'dying' Sun god. Here's why

This election season, India is preparing to etch history with the second-longest voting exercise. There is intense hustle-bustle in media which is trying to navigate through the promises, allegations, imprisonments and debates of political leaders as they take to the field and flaunt their massive connect with the people, especially in the hinterland where the heart of India lies.

In this period of intense glory, when more than 1.43 billion people are set to decide who will remain in power and who will fall from the throne,&nbsp;astrologers become the bridge that links the present scenarios to reflect what the future is likely to have in store for them.

Some may dismiss this as superstition but many political leaders as well as electorates are curious to understand what path is being charted out by the alignment of stars for the political leaders.

WION spoke to Astrologer Rashi Sharma to understand what the stars of the political stalwarts indicate about their performance in the election battle. Here's what she predicted:&nbsp;

<h2>Narendra Modi</h2>

The Indian prime minister will definitely be back in power. Mars and Saturn in his horoscope are very strong and these planets are important for politics. He is likely to strengthen the country's defence and home ministry in his next tenure.

<h2>Amit Shah</h2>

Saturn is playing a very big role in the Indian home minister's horoscope currently. He will be able to defeat his opposition easily. His planets indicate that he is likely to get other ministries, apart from home ministry. He may also have great influence in the foreign ministry or may altogether head it in the near future.

<h2>Sonia Gandhi</h2>

She is bound to face opposition from her own party people and family members and her decisions will be opposed. She is likely to engage in arguments and things won't take place as she wishes them to. In a way, it can be said that Sonia Gandhi is on a losing streak.

<h2>Rahul Gandhi</h2>

In Gandhi's case, Saturn is placed in the fourth house which is not a very good sign. His relationship with his mother can deteriorate. He will also have to face opposition from his family members. Because of Saturn's placement, he has been fumbling and forgetting lines while speaking. In his horoscope, the lack of perspective is very evident. He may not lead Congress after 10 years.

<h2>Arvind Kejriwal</h2>

In the Delhi Chief Minister's horoscope, the North Lunar Node's sub-period has started and as soon as it began, he was imprisoned. So it is bringing misfortune to him and not luck, as it happens in some cases. He may get bail but will have to again go to prison in the next year. He will not strongly stand through the elections and is also likely to lose the chief minister&nbsp;post.

Israel disables GPS, cancels leaves of IDF amid fears of attack by Iran

For the first time after the violent October 7 attacks, the security cabinet of Israel agreed to reopen the Erez crossing between the country and northern Gaza.

Israeli officials have agreed to open the crossing to ensure that more humanitarian aid is entering Gaza. The approval for using the Israeli Port of Ashdod was also given by the cabinet to help transfer more aid to Gaza.

“Israel will allow the temporary delivery of humanitarian aid through Ashdod and the Erez checkpoint” to “prevent a humanitarian crisis and... ensure the continuation of the fighting”, as per a government statement.&nbsp;

The statement, which was issued after midnight, further read, "This increased assistance will prevent a humanitarian crisis and is essential to ensure the continuation of the fighting and achieve the objectives of the war. In light of this, Israel will allow the temporary provision of humanitarian aid through Ashdod and Erez Crossing and increase Jordanian aid through Kerem Shalom."

This unprecedented step was taken by Israel hours after United States President Joe Biden's 30-minute conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the wake of the killing of the World Central Kitchen's seven aid workers in Gaza which has led to an international fury over Israel's actions.&nbsp;

The opening of three aid corridors was requested by President Biden in the conversation and approved by the Israeli government, CBS News reported earlier.

<h2>US warns Israel to take 'concrete steps' to protect civilians&nbsp;</h2>

United States President Joe Biden, in a stark statement, warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday (April 4) that Gaza's overall humanitarian situation is unacceptable and asked Tel Aviv to immediately take steps to address the issue or face consequences.

This was the first conversation between the two leaders since seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen were killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza.

“President Biden emphasised that the strikes on humanitarian workers and the overall humanitarian situation are unacceptable,” said the White House, in a statement after the call ended.&nbsp;

“He made clear that US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these steps," the statement added.

Biden further added that Israel needed to “announce and implement a series of specific, concrete, and measurable steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers.”

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking after the call in Brussels, cleared the stance of the United States.&nbsp;“If we don’t see the changes that we need to see, there’ll be changes in our own policy,” Blinken said.&nbsp;

White House National Security Council spokesman John, however, clarified that the US support for "Israel's self-defence remains iron-clad. The United States isn't going to walk away from helping Israel defend itself. That said, you can say all that and... still believe that the manner in which they're defending themselves against the Hamas threat needs to change."&nbsp;

<h2>US welcomes newly announced Israeli measures&nbsp;</h2>

The United States welcomed the newly announced Israeli measures to increase entry of humanitarian aid in Gaza.

“These steps, including a commitment to open the Ashdod port for the direct delivery of assistance into Gaza, to open the Erez Crossing for a new route for assistance to reach north Gaza, and to significantly increase deliveries from Jordan directly into Gaza, must now be fully and rapidly implemented,” said White House National Security Council Adrienne Watson, in a statement.

“As the president said today on the call, US policy with respect to Gaza will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate action on these and other steps, including steps to protect innocent civilians and the safety of aid workers,” she added.

Israel agrees to reopen Erez crossing hours after 'stern' Biden-Netanyahu chat

Former US president Donald Trump's bid to dismiss the classified documents case was denied by a judge on Thursday (April 4).&nbsp;

Trump has been accused of mishandling classified documents during his tenure as the president and has argued that the documents were seen as personal papers under the Presidential Records Act.

The charges against Trump "make no reference to the Presidential Records Act, nor do they rely on that statute for purposes of stating an offence," wrote US District Judge Aileen Cannon.

"For these reasons, accepting the allegations of the Superseding Indictment as true, the Presidential Records Act does not provide a pre-trial basis to dismiss," the judge added. This also raised the possibility of the argument being used by the defence in the case later.&nbsp;

Cannon had asked the two sides to address the argument of whether the national security documents can be labelled as personal in proposed jury instructions. Special counsel Jack Smith's office said that the argument was "fundamentally flawed".

Trump has been charged by Special Counsel Smith in a 40-count indictment which includes 32 alleged violations of a national security law called the Espionage Act, under which it is illegal to mishandle national defence information.

More than 300 sensitive government records were finally recovered by the FBI from Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence and he was accused of keeping them illegally by the prosecutors.

<h2>Judge says the issue is 'unprecedented and unjust'</h2>

In her Thursday ruling (April 4), the judge said that the issue now is "unprecedented and unjust."

Cannon said that her order soliciting preliminary draft instructions was "a genuine attempt, in the context of the upcoming trial, to better understand the parties’ competing positions and the questions to be submitted to the jury in this complex case."

As per the Presidential Records Act, the president is required to return the presidential records at the end of their term, however, they can keep their personal records, which they refer to as documents which contain “highly personal information, such as diaries, journals, and medical records.”&nbsp;

“Trump’s entire effort to rely on the PRA is not based on any facts,” said the prosecutors.&nbsp;

“It is a post hoc justification that was concocted more than a year after he left the White House, and his invocation in this Court of the PRA is not grounded in any decision he actually made during his presidency to designate as personal any of the records charged," he added.&nbsp;

The trial will begin on May 20. However, the judge has repeatedly hinted that the date will be pushed back and both sides have been asked to submit new proposed dates. The two sides proposed dates in late February, however, Cannon failed to give a ruling. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts.&nbsp;

Trump's troubles continue as judge denies motion to dismiss classified documents case

India's Ministry of External Affairs, in a strongly worded comment, denied the allegations of carrying out targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan, as was reported by the UK daily The Guardian.

India's Ministry of External Affairs, in a strongly worded comment, denied the allegations of carrying out targeted killings of terrorists in Pakistan, as was reported by the UK daily The Guardian. The ministry, reiterating its earlier statement, said that all the allegations were "false and malicious anti-India propaganda". The ministry, quoting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, said that targeted killings in other countries were "not the government of India's policy". What does the report say? The remarks of India's ministry were part of the report published in The Guardian in which it has been claimed that New Delhi "has implemented a policy of targeting those it considers hostile to India". The report claimed that nearly 20 such killings of terrorists were swiftly carried out by the Indian intelligence agency RAW since the brutal attack on Pulwama, which was allegedly carried out by Pakistan in 2019. Also Read: Jaishankar rebuffs senior UN official's 'free and fair' remark on elections in India It was further reported by the UK daily that the attacks were inspired by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and Russia's KGB. The documents submitted by the Pakistani authorities to back the claims which were published in the global newspaper were unverified and hence, raised questions over the authenticity of the claims. India's continuous rejection of 'absurd' claims made on global level This is not the first time such 'absurd' claims have been made against India on a global level. India was earlier accused by the United States and Canada of plotting to kill Khalistani terrorists on foreign soil. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September last year went on to claim that there were "credible allegations" which proved the involvement of India in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was a Canadian citizen and a wanted terrorist in India, He was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey in June. The allegations were rejected by India as "absurd". Watch: Indian economy's strengths & challenges: Explained The United States later claimed that an attempt to kill Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun was foiled by them. According to the US, the plot to kill Pannun was orchestrated by Indian national Nikhil Gupta along with an un-named Indian government official. Reacting to this, former foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said, "India takes such inputs seriously since it impinges on our own national security interests as well. Issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments." (With inputs from agencies)
