The LSST Camera is the largest digital camera ever created by humans for astronomy and it will work as the Vera Rubin Observatory's centerpiece. The camera will start exploring the southern skies.

What will the massive camera do?

The camera will collect 60 petabytes of data on the universe's composition, the expansion of the universe, the solar system, the formation of our galaxy and the nature and distribution of dark energy and dark matter.

A 5.1-foot-wide optical lens will be used by the camera to capture a 15-second exposure of the sky after every 20 seconds. The filters will be changed automatically by the camera to view light in various wavelengths from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared.

The camera will also capture the fleeting events for other scientists on which they can train their telescopes and monitor changes happening in the southern sky.

In an SLAC release, the University of Washington's astrophysicist and director of the Rubin Observatory’s construction Zeljko Ivezic said, "We will soon start producing the greatest movie of all time and the most informative map of the night sky ever assembled."

An autonomous underwater robot, with video cameras mounted atop, sank deep into the waters of the famous Lake Baikal in Siberia to capture stunning visuals and reveal the hidden mysteries. The study also hinted that the fault zone can trigger an earthquake.

The scars which were left by the eruptions of mud were discovered by the robot at depths of 340 to 540 feet (100 to 165 meters) in two different locations — Malaya Kosa Bay and Goryachinskaya Bay — along the lake's northwestern shore.

Even though scientists were already aware of Lake Baikal harbouring mud volcanoes, the latest discovery revealed that a fault zone, called Severobaikalsk, or North Baikal fault, sits uncomfortably close to the mud volcanoes.

As per experts, the signs of recent eruptions which occurred at the bottom of the lake indicated that the fault may trigger an earthquake.

"In the North Baikal depression, which is limited by this fault, there have been strong earthquakes in the past," said Lunina, in a translated statement.

The two sites where the robot, or autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), was deployed by the researchers displayed intensely fractured beds blanketed with clay and soft sediments with the deposits erupting.

For the first time, four NASA pilots will be flying two specialised WB-57 planes off the coast of Mexico and chasing the total solar eclipse on April 8 to capture a 'never-before-seen' view.

The solar eclipse, which will be observed by many from the ground, will for the first time be captured from a relatively closer view.

The pilots will follow the path of totality or total darkness, which is from southwest to northeast, and will remain in the shadows till the moon crosses the sun.

From the skies, this journey will take place in seven minutes in comparison to four minutes from the ground.

Some stars which have existed from ancient ages and are orbiting the central supermassive black hole of the Milk Way, appear youthful despite their age.

However, the secret behind their young look is dark and gory. These zombie-like stars have gobbled up their own neighbours. This was revealed in a study carried out by Northwestern University.

Survivors of stellar cannibalism losing mass

The astrophysicists used a new model for tracing the violent journeys of 1,000 simulated stars which have been orbiting a central supermassive black hole, known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), in our galaxy.

The region, which is so densely packed with stars, commonly faces brutal stellar collisions.

"The closest star to our sun is about four light-years away. Within that same distance near the supermassive black hole, there are more than a million stars. It's an incredibly crowded neighbourhood. On top of that, the supermassive black hole has a really strong gravitational pull. As they orbit the black hole, stars can move at thousands of kilometres per second," said Northwestern's Sanaea C. Rose, who headed the research.

The new study, which simulated the effects of these intense collisions, found that collision survivors are likely losing mass and turning into low-mass stars. There are also possibilities that they are merging with other stars and becoming massive as well as rejuvenated in appearance.

"The region around the central black hole is dense with stars moving at extremely high speeds," said Rose added.

"It's a bit like running through an incredibly crowded subway station in New York City during rush hour. If you aren't colliding with other people, then you are passing very closely by them. For stars, these near collisions still cause them to interact gravitationally. We wanted to explore what these collisions and interactions mean for the stellar population and characterize their outcomes," she said.

This research was presented by Rose at the American Physical Society's (APS) April meeting in Sacramento, California.

Israeli strike on Gaza kills foreign aid workers just after they delivered food, NGO decries attack

Days after seven foreign aid workers were killed by the Israeli army in Gaza in a "grave mistake", World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder Jose Andres accused the country of targeting his aid workers "systematically, car by car".

He said that the strike carried out by Israel on Monday (April 1) was not a mistake and added that Israeli forces were informed about the aid workers' movements.

In the airstrike, WCK aid workers from Australia, Canada, Poland, the UK and the US lost their lives along with a Palestinian colleague.

Israel called the strike a "grave mistake" and issued an apology. The Israeli government also vowed to carry out an independent investigation.

According to the World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder, Israel launched strikes on the aid convoy while they were leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, "where the team had unloaded more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza on the maritime route".

Not a 'bad luck situation' for Israeli army, charity's logo was clearly displayed: Andres

He said that the convoy had three vehicles, two of them were armoured and the charity's logo was clearly displayed.

"This was not just a bad luck situation where ‘oops’ we dropped the bomb in the wrong place," said Andres.

"This was over a 1.5, 1.8 kilometres, with a very defined humanitarian convoy that had signs in the top, in the roof, a very colourful logo that we are obviously very proud of," he said. It's “very clear who we are and what we do," he added.

"They were targeting us in a deconflicting zone, in an area controlled by IDF. They know that it was our teams moving on that road ... with three cars," Andres said.

Narrating the entire incident to the Reuters news agency, the World Central Kitchen (WCK) founder said, "The team was coming from dropping in a warehouse… south of Gaza all the food they were able to download before it got too dark."

"Somehow we kind of lost communication. Then we began [to get] information that something went wrong, that something happened. And that is when I found out our team” were targeted," he said.

"They were targeted systematically car by car," Andres said. He further alleged that Israel is most likely to have carried out more than three strikes by drones.

"They attacked the first car...We have a feeling they were able to escape safely because this was an armoured vehicle," Andres said. The people in the first car "were able to move in the second one. Again, this one was hit. They were able to move in the third one," he added.

He further said that the aid workers were trying to make calls when they were attacked to ask the Israeli Defense Forces, "'What are they doing? They are targeting us.’”

"The area was controlled by the Israeli military. They knew it was our team moving on that road with three cars," he said.

In a never-thought-of nightmarish situation, an Alaska Airlines flight - from Honolulu to Anchorage - was forced to turn back after its bathroom sink malfunctioned and flooded the cabin of the Boeing 737 Max 9 jet with four inches of water.

According to the flight tracking website FlightAware, Alaska Airlines Flight 828 took off from Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at 10:16 pm on March 29.

The plane was headed to Anchorage when "an issue with water from the lavatory sink shortly after takeoff" occurred, said the airline, in a statement to PEOPLE.

Passenger Dustin Parker recorded the on-flight video footage in which the flight attendants were seen using paper towels to try and soak the water which had filled in the entire centre aisle.

Pig kidney transplanted into man: In a rare medical case, the first person who successfully received a kidney transplant from a genetically modified pig, was performing so well after the groundbreaking surgery that the hospital discharged him on Wednesday (April 3), just weeks after the operation.

The pig kidney transplant and its positive outcome represent the achievement of a major feat in the world of medicine and are likely to start an era of cross-species organ transplantation.

The doctors have earlier carried out two previous organ transplants in which the organs of genetically modified pigs have been given to humans. However, both cases failed. In the two cases, the heart of the genetically modified pigs was transplanted into humans, after which both patients failed to survive.

Doctors taste success with pig kidney transplant

The kidney of the pig, which was transplanted into 62-year-old Richard Slayman has been functioning well, removing waste from the blood, producing urine and balancing the fluids of the body, as per the doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“This moment — leaving the hospital today with one of the cleanest bills of health I’ve had in a long time — is one I wished would come for many years,” Slayman said, in a statement released by the hospital. “Now it’s a reality," he said.

The man claimed to have received “exceptional care” and also extended thanks to his nurses, physicians as well as all other well-wishers.

“Today marks a new beginning not just for me, but for them as well,” said Slayman.

Chief medical officer for the United Network for Organ Sharing, Dr David Klassen, who has been managing the organ transplant system of the nation, said that the surgery has increased the prospect of animal-to-human organ transplants, or xenotransplantation.

Pig kidney transplant patient leaves hospital

“Though much work remains to be done, I think the potential of this to benefit a large number of patients will be realized, and that was a question mark hovering over the field,” said Dr Klassen.

However, doubts still loom about whether the transplanted organ will be eventually rejected by Slayman's body, said Dr Klassen.

However, if it is ultimately successful, the operation will have to be replicated in various patients and it will be studied in different clinical trials before xenotransplants are made widely available.

He said that if these transplants are scaled up and integrated into the health care system, the doctors will face “daunting” logistical challenges, which include assurance of an adequate supply of organs from genetically engineered animals.

Taiwan earthquake: Two Indians go missing after calamity; 9 dead, more than 1,000 injured

Former United States president Donald Trump’s bid to delay his trial on charges based on hush money transferred to adult film actress Stormy Daniels was rejected by a New York judge.

Trump's lawyers had requested to adjourn the hearing in the New York hush money case until the Supreme Court rules on presidential immunity.

The case is with Judge Juan Merchan in Manhattan and its hearing is scheduled to start on April 15.

Merchan said that the request of the former president was untimely and ruled that his lawyers had many opportunities to raise the issue of presidential immunity before but they chose to raise it in a March 7 court filing.

The judge on Wednesday (April 3) ruled that former president Donald Trump is not immune from prosecution in the hush money case since he did not invoke the defence in a timely manner.

Judge Juan Merchan ruled that the former president was "well aware" he could try claiming presidential immunity after being indicted a year ago on charges of falsifying business records which were connected with hush money transferred to Daniels.

"Nonetheless, the defendant chose not to raise the defence of presidential immunity until well past the 45-day period provided by statute," Merchan said.

Merchan did not rule on the merits of the immunity claim made by Trump and decided to focus on the timing, which he claimed tested "this court's credulity."

"This Court finds that Defendant had myriad opportunities to raise the claim of presidential immunity well before March 7, 2024," wrote Merchan.

Judge relying on 'fundamentally flawed legal premise' in Trump's classified information case: Special counsel

In Donald Trump's criminal case, where he is charged with retaining classified information, special counsel Jack Smith in a court filing said that the judge was relying on a “fundamentally flawed legal premise” when asking lawyers to look into whether the former president can claim presidential immunity as per federal records law.

Smith added that if Judge Aileen Cannon gives the ruling that Trump can use the Presidential Records Act (PRA) in his defence, he will file another appeal in a higher court and will seek an order for the judge to correctly apply the law.

This has increased the chances of the trial being pushed back beyond the November general election in which Trump is certain to be the Republican nominee for president.

Meanwhile, Trump's defence team argued, "If this case is presented to a jury—which it should not be—the jury would be forced to resolve factual issues relating to not only PRA categorisations but also documents' alleged classification status."

"Not a single one had heard Trump say that he was designating records as personal or that, at the time he caused the transfer of boxes to Mar-a-Lago, he believed that his removal of records amounted to designating them as personal under the PRA," stated the special counsel.
