Moon once 'literally turned itself inside out'. Scientists wonder 'how'

For years, we have known that our Earth will one day be swallowed by the Sun as it will balloon because of its extinguishing fuel.

However, a new study has highlighted the death of Earth and other planets may be more chaotic and violent than ever imagined by human civilisation.

As per the researchers at the University of Warwick, even if our planet gets swallowed by the Sun, other planets are likely to be 'crushed and ground to dust'.

How will the Sun die?

Sun, along with other similar stars, crush the hydrogen atoms into helium which generates heat and light under the forces of gravity.

There is a limited amount of hydrogen in all stars and when this begins to run out, the forces which help in keeping the star stable lose balance.

After around five billion years, our Sun will begin burning in its core before it starts to inflate and grow more than 200 times its original size and the helium on its outer layers will start to burn.

Once this happens, the Sun will leave behind a white dwarf which will be a remnant of the core of the Sun and will glow with residual heat as it cools down.

How will the solar system get destroyed after the Sun's death?

The University of Warwick's Professor Boris Gaensicke, speaking about the solar system's destruction, said, "The sad news is that the Earth will probably just be swallowed up by an expanding Sun before it becomes a white dwarf."

However, till now scientists do not know much about what will happen to the rest of the solar system once the sun turns into a white dwarf.

The researchers looked into the fate of moons, planets and asteroids which will pass close to the white dwarfs by looking into the transits.

The researchers found that around the white dwarf stars, the transits were irregular and highly chaotic, which hinted at the fact that their future is likely to be violent and catastrophic.

Moons, asteroids and planets which come close to the white dwarf's dense core are shredded when they get pulled into smaller pieces by gravity. These pieces eventually get grounded into dust as they collide with one another.

The dust continues to move around the dead star till it eventually disperses out into the universe. This is likely to be the fate of the many celestial bodies in our solar system which are not swallowed or destroyed by the expansion of the sun.

"For the rest of the solar system, some of the asteroids located between Mars and Jupiter, and maybe some of the moons of Jupiter may get dislodged and travel close enough to the eventual white dwarf to undergo the shredding process we have investigated," said Professor Gaensicke.

Meanwhile, Dr Amornrat Aungwerojwit of Naresuan University, Thailand, who headed the study, said: “Previous research had shown that when asteroids, moons and planets get close to white dwarfs, the huge gravity of these stars rips these small planetary bodies into smaller and smaller pieces.”

Amid the looming climate crisis and people battling unpredictable weather, the month of March has emerged as the 10th consecutive hottest month.

In a bid to woo the young generation in the upcoming general elections, United States President Joe Biden made another attempt at student loan cancellation.

With the new plan, President Biden is hoping to deliver on a major campaign promise, which he has so far not been able to fulfil.

Biden, on his visit to Wisconsin on Monday (April 8), gave a detailed proposal as per which the debt loan of around 25 million Americans will be cancelled.

For months, the plan is being worked out after the first attempt of Biden at mass cancellation was rejected by the Supreme Court. The decision of the court was called by Biden a "mistake", as he gave orders to the Education Department to make a new plan by using a different legal authority.

In comparison to his original plan, Biden's latest proposal is more targeted and focused on those for whom student loan is a major hurdle.

The plans, which were detailed by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Biden in Madison, Wisconsin, included cancelling up to $20,000 of accrued and capitalised interest for borrowers, without taking into consideration their income.

According to the Biden administration, this will cancel the entire interest for 23 million borrowers.

Who will benefit from Biden's new proposal?

The new proposal of Biden will offer cancellation of loans to five categories of borrowers.

According to the proposal, the student loan of those borrowers whose debt has grown due to unpaid interest will be cancelled.

The government will cancel around $20,000 in interest for Americans who currently owe way more than what they had borrowed originally.

5 Spices Not To Eat Too Much Of In Summer

Ginger generates heat in the body if used excessively and hence, should be avoided in summer. It is advisable to add its dry variant to food and not use fresh ginger.

Asafoetida, which is commonly known as Hing, is a must in Indian cooking. It is great to rev up the metabolism. However, those who suffer from inflammation of blood should use it cautiously in the summer.

Chillies are an integral part of the Indian cuisine. However, in summer, all types of chillies which include thin, long, green, red, and bell pepper/capsicum should be used in smaller amounts to avoid heartburn, and irritated bowel and gut-related issues.

Clove is extremely hot in nature and should be used sparingly in the warmer months.

Garlic carries intense heat within itself and is known to have great flavour and even affects the mind. It is contradictory to add it to the meal in the summer months since it adds heat to the body.

Planning To Take A Selfie With Solar Eclipse? Don't. Here's Why

For selfie lovers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 can seem to be a great opportunity to take a historic selfie and capture the astronomical phenomenon.

Even though your back is towards the sun, its harmful UV rays can bounce off the screen of your phone and enter your eyes.

No smartphone, no matter how advanced, can handle the intense solar rays emitted by the sun. The heat of the rays can also get concentrated by using the camera or phone and can melt the lens inside.

Experts suggest that one should wear eclipse-viewing glasses which meet the ISO 12312-2 standard and use a Mylar or other solar filter for protecting the smartphone or other camera lens while clicking a picture with the sun.

One can also shoot the sun when it has fully eclipsed without eclipse glasses, but be quick, as that is likely to last for only a couple of minutes.

Solar Eclipse 2024: The weather conditions in the United States have become a major concern for the excited eclipse watchers in the country who are waiting with bated breath to see the historical astronomical phenomenon in different parts of the country.

Solar Eclipse 2024 Today

However, their plan to watch the eclipse can be ruined due to the changing weather (storms and clouds) in different areas along the path of totality.

The best weather for the eclipse is likely to remain from Vermont through Maine and also in Missouri through southern Indiana. In these areas, only a few isolated clouds are likely to hover in the sky, which is not likely to obstruct optimal eclipse viewing. So, all the eclipse watchers can expect to see the astronomical phenomenon clearly in places like Evansville, Ind.; Carbondale, Ill.; Burlington, Vt.; and Caribou, Maine.

It is expected that the eclipse will move from south central Texas through the Ohio Valley and into New England before going to northeast Canada and will cast a seconds-long shadow of darkness.

Here's how the weather is likely to be in major cities on the path of totality:

New York City

New York is most likely to observe good weather and some clouds through which one can see and will not face complete obstruction of the historic solar eclipse.

Austin and Texas

Texas and Austin are likely to witness an overcast sky during the eclipse which will make it difficult for viewing. It is also likely to observe severe storms later in the day.

Buffalo

Earlier, the sky was looking clear in Buffalo. However, it appears fairly overcast now and the forecasters say that the eclipse will most likely not be visible from the region.

Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus

The skies are going to remain cloudy in Cincinnati and Columbus but they are likely to get clearer and the eclipse should be visible to people. A better viewing opportunity will be possible from Toledo in Ohio.

In Cleveland also, the skies are likely to clear up till the time the eclipse moves through the region.

Dallas

Scattered storms and overcast skies during the eclipse have been forecasted by the National Weather Service in Dallas. The weather is likely to deteriorate in the region after the eclipse. “There may only be a short window (1-2 hrs) between the eclipse and strong to severe storms,” stated the National Weather Service in Dallas.

Indianapolis

The skies in Indianapolis, which lies in the path of totality, will get clearer and the eclipse will be easily visible.

Louisville

The conditions will remain fine in Louisville for viewing the eclipse. If there is any cloud coverage, it will be clear away before the eclipse reaches the region.

Rochester

There will be 80 percent cloud coverage in Rochester which is on the eclipse’s path of totality.

San Antonio

The weather conditions in San Antonio are also not too good and the skies are likely to be covered with clouds which will hinder the experience of viewing the solar eclipse.
