Scientists spotted a massive, car-sized asteroid two days before it had an extremely close shave with Earth on Thursday (April 11).

To everyone's relief, the 9.4-foot space rock, although came very close to Earth, made a harmless pass by the planet.

The newly-discovered asteroid 2024 GJ2 is around the size of a car and after it was spotted by astronomers they calculated that the space rock would pass by Earth at a mere distance of 19.3 thousand kilometres from Earth.

This is just three per cent of the distance between the Moon and the Earth. According to the European Space Agency (ESA), 2024 GJ2 measures between 2.5 and 5 metres (8.2 and 16 feet).

Its size means that it is an asteroid with a weight class which would have burned up in the atmosphere of the Earth if its orbit intersected with ours more directly.

As per the astronomers, the asteroid made its closest approach at 2:28:42 p.m. EDT, when it was at a distance of 12,298 kilometres from Earth on Thursday (April 11).

The asteroid will not return till 2093, as per the near-Earth Objects Coordination Centre of the ESA. However, at that time, the asteroid will not fly as close as it did this time.

In 2093, asteroid GJ2 is expected to fly as close as 205,947 kilometres from us, which is 10 times farther than the distance at which it flew this time.

Around 35,000 near-Earth asteroids have been catalogued by NASA to date, although very few of them threaten our planet.

What are asteroids and how does NASA track them?

As per the scientists, asteroids are space rocks and some of them are also made of metal and orbit around the Sun.

Some asteroids are tiny and some are as huge as boulders. The asteroids can also fly even hundreds of kilometres across.

These asteroids have remained preserved in the solar system from the time it came into existence some 4.6 billion years ago.

The asteroids can also cause massive damage and hence, the space agencies track them. A range of instruments are used by the US space agency NASA to track the asteroids.

5 Ways In Which Collagen Supplements Can Affect Your Body

People wishing for healthy nails and hair often consume collagen supplements. However, these supplements can have side effects on the body. Here are five side effects of taking collagen supplements:

Collagen supplements can sometimes lead to digestive issues like gas, diarrhoea and bloating. This happens because it is difficult to digest proteins like collagen.

If you are allergic to some source of collagen, then the supplements can trigger reactions.

Few collagen supplements are filled with hydrolyzed collagen which boosts the calcium level in the body. This increases the risk of developing kidney stones.

4. Unhealthy Interaction With Other Medicines

If collagen is consumed with other medicines like blood thinners, it can lead to unexpected side effects.

"You’ll hear in the world Chad and Lori planned for themselves, they identified those who stood in the way of their dream as dark,'' argued Madison County Prosecutor Rob Wood.

Former United States president Donald Trump on Wednesday (April 10) said that if he again gets elected to the White House, he will not sign a national abortion ban.

With the statement, Trump went back from his promise which he had made as a candidate in 2016.

However, while speaking to the reporters, he said that the ban will quickly be "straightened out". The law passed in Arizona has placed a ban on abortion from conception and it can only be carried out to save a mother's life.

On Monday (April 8), Trump released a lengthy statement which said that the voters and states need to decide how and when abortion should be restricted.

In the statement, which was shared on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump also took credit for the US Supreme Court's historic ruling in 2022 which overturned Roe v Wade.

In 2016, Trump had campaigned on the appointment of justices who will oppose Roe. After becoming the president, he named three conservatives to the court who voted to reverse Roe.

Three people were injured in a shootout which took place between rival groups near the celebration which marked the end of Ramadan, said the police in Philadelphia.

There was no indication from the police if the event itself, which was a celebration of the culmination of the Muslim holy month, was a target of the shooting.

"We are very, very fortunate today that we did not have more individuals shot and anyone killed," said Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, while speaking to the reporters.

Bethel added that it was mid-afternoon when more than 1,000 people were in the park to celebrate Eid al-Fitr when the shooting took place. Nearly 30 gunshots rang out, he added.

"What we do know is there appear to be two factions within the park, who are now exchanging gunfire," said Bethel.

No casualties reported, three injured

According to the police, three people suffered injuries including an adult, who was hit by the bullet during the exchange of gunfire and also an armed 15-year-old suspect, who was shot by the police.

The suspect was hit in the arm and leg. Bethel said that he was admitted to a hospital and is in stable condition.

He further emphasised that a third person had also reached a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound in his hand, although it was not clear if he had received the wound in the firing.

Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said that they had arrested five "young people actively engaged in gunfire" near the Eid al-Fitr celebration in the case, which included the teen, and also recovered five guns. He added that no one was killed in the shooting.

No casualties reported, three injured According to the police, three people suffered injuries including an adult, who was hit by the bullet during the exchange of gunfire and also an armed 15-year-old suspect, who was shot by the police. United States President Joe Biden extended an 'ironclad' commitment to Israel against any Iranian attack amid rising concerns of Tehran launching "significant" strikes in the coming days in response to the blast at the Iranian consular building in Damascus.

Biden spoke about the commitment in a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

“We also want to address the Iranian threat to launch a significant – they’re threatening to launch a significant attack in Israel,” said Biden.

“As I told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad. Let me say it again, ironclad. We’re gonna do all we can to protect Israel’s security," he added.

“What I’m calling for is for the Israelis to just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into the country,” said the president.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration also clarified that Iran cannot assume that the US forces, which have been significantly reinforced in Gaza since the war started, will stay out if there is any escalation in conflict between them and Israel.

The high court of the Indian state of Karnataka rejected a circular which was issued by the Indian government directing a ban on 23 breeds of "ferocious dogs considered dangerous for human life".

The high court emphasised that “none of the stakeholders”, especially those groups which represented pet owners, were taken into consultation in the process.

Govt free to issue revised circular: Judge

A single-judge bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna issued the order and added that the union government is free to issue a revised circular after proper consultation with experts and following due process.

“It is an admitted fact that none of the stakeholders were heard. The composition of the committee is not in consonance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The Union of India could not have imposed the ban without a recommendation from a properly constituted committee,” reported legal news website LiveLaw, while citing the order.

The judge said that the circular “travels beyond what is found in Animal Birth Control Rules” and “cannot but be held to be contrary to the law and therefore has to be obliterated”.

“It is an admitted fact that none of the stakeholders are heard. The composition of the committee is not in consonance with the Rule framed under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The Union of India could not have imposed the ban without an appropriate recommendation from a properly constituted committee,” read the ruling, as per LiveLaw.

The court stressed the importance of consulting pet owners and relevant organisations before implementing such bans and held that stakeholders should include organisations certifying dog breeds and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). “The focus of such consultations should be on responsible pet ownership,” it said.

The court passed the order after a professional dog handler and the owner of a Rottweiler filed a joint petition alleging that the expert committee had not consulted any stakeholders before the issuance of the circular. The committee's recommendations led to the issuance of the circular.

Advocate Swaroop Anand P had represented the petitioners before the High Court and the case for the central government was presented by the Additional Solicitor General Aravind Kamat.

The circular, which has now been scrapped, appealed to all states and Union territories to prohibit 23 breeds of dogs that were categorised hazardous and ‘ferocious’ to human life.

Scientists, in a new study, have hinted that meteorites may soon disappear from the icy plains of Antarctica due to climate warming.

The Antarctic is a haven for meteorite hunters and is filled with meteorites in today's date. Every year, around 1,000 space rocks are found in the region and it is easy to spot their dark hue in the white expanse.

Field Museum of Natural History and the University of Chicago research scientist Maria Valdes has hinted that the scenario may not be so in the coming days.

“Antarctica, a desert of ice, provides an ideal background for meteorite recovery — go to the right place, and any rock you find must have fallen from the sky,” said Valdes.

In late 2022 and early 2023, she visited the region as part of an expedition team to complete her work at the museum’s Robert A. Pritzker Centre for Meteoritics and Polar Studies. Five meteorites were found by the international team in the expedition.

“We stumbled across an enormous brownstone sitting by itself in the middle of an ice field. It was a little bit smaller than a bowling ball and quite heavy — 7.6 kg (about 17 pounds),” Pritzker said via email.

“I had seen and handled so many meteorites in my career, but finding one yourself is such a different feeling," she added.

However, the new study emphasises how this trove of scientific information is being threatened by the climate crisis.

Meteorites are getting lost in the melting ice which places them out of the reach of scientists.

“As the climate continues to warm, Antarctic rocks are sinking into the ice at an increasing rate. Over time, this will make many meteorites inaccessible to scientists,” said Valdes, who is not part of the latest research.
