United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday (April 14) warned the international community against descending deeper into conflict as Israel called for "all possible sanctions" against Iran.

Guterres was addressing the Security Council meeting which was held to address the weekend attack by Iran on Israel in which Tehran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Tel Aviv in response to the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.

"Neither the region nor the world can afford more war. The Middle East is on the brink," said Guterres, while speaking at the Security Council.

"The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said and appealed for "maximum restraint."

In his speech, Guterres condemned the strikes launched by Iran on Israel and the attack allegedly carried out by the Israeli government at the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

"It's time to step back from the brink. It is vital to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East," said Guterres.

He also further appealed for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, which as per the experts is on the brink of famine.

During the Security Council session, which was called by Israel to address the simmering crisis, Ambassador Gilad Erdan appealed to the council to "take action (and) condemn Iran for their terror."

The Security Council must "impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it's too late," he said.

He said that Iran had violated international law and played a video in which Israel was seen intercepting Iranian drones above the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

Erdan further appealed to the body to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guards as a terror organisation.

Meanwhile, Iran's UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani claimed that the Islamic Republic was exercising its "inherent right to self-defence."

"The Security Council... failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security," said Iravani.

Hence, Tehran "had no choice" but to respond, Iravani said, further stating that his country does "not seek escalation or war," but they will respond to any "threat or aggression".

Israel calls for 'all possible sanctions' against Iran amid war of words at UNSC

Unflappable American Scottie Scheffler claimed a second Masters title in three years on Sunday, the world number one holding steady while his biggest challengers self-destructed making their way through the infamous Amen Corner.

Scheffler, the Green Jacket winner in 2022, began the day with a one-stroke lead over twice major winner Collin Morikawa and posted a final round of four-under 68 to finish 11-under for the week, four clear of Swedish young gun Ludvig Aberg.

"I did my best to stay calm out there," said Scheffler, after becoming the 18th player to win the Masters multiple times. "I tried to stay patient on the course and was able to make some key shots and key putts today to keep my round going.

"Ludvig played great today. He made a good move at me there on the back nine and I was fortunate to hold him off towards the end."

Aberg closed with a 69 to take solo second spot and cap a sensational majors debut.

Morikawa, after tumbling down the leaderboard with double-bogeys at nine and 11, recovered with birdies at 13 and 15 to help secure a share of third place with American compatriot Max Homa and Britain's Tommy Fleetwood at four-under.

Scheffler, the red hot favourite coming into the year's first major, leaves Augusta National as the planet's undisputed best with three titles and a runner-up finish in his last four starts.

The performance was all the more remarkable as the 27-year-old played with the added distraction of knowing he might have to return home at any moment to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.

"It's a very special time for both of us," said Scheffler, before last year's winner, Spaniard Jon Rahm, slipped the Green Jacket on him. "I can't put into words what it means to win this tournament again.

"I really can't put into words what it's going to be like to be a father for the first time.

"I'm looking forward to getting home and celebrating with Meredith."

Amen Corner

It is said the Masters does not start until the back nine on Sunday, with many a Green Jacket won or lost with a trip through Amen Corner, the treacherous three-hole stretch that begins at the par four 11th.

The drama actually started a little earlier at the ninth this year where Scheffler had a tap in birdie, that he nearly holed out for an eagle, to lead by one heading into the turn.

All around Scheffler challengers were unravelling. Morikawa taking a double-bogey at nine to fall three shots off the pace.

As Scheffler was piling on the pressure with birdies at eight, nine and 10, Amen Corner bared its teeth to sink the hopes of three Green Jacket contenders - Aberg, Morikawa and Homa.

Aberg and Morikawa found water at 11, taking double-bogeys, while Homa suffered a double-bogey at the 12th after losing his ball in the bushes.

Even Scheffler could not escape Amen Corner unscathed, his run of three birdies ending with a bogey at 11.

But a birdie at 13 allowed Scheffler to walk away from Amen Corner at nine-under, holding a three-shot lead over Aberg with five to play.

Aberg, however, was not waving the white flag, undoing the damage done at the 11th with back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 to stay in sight of the leader at two back.

But Scheffler did not take his foot off the gas either, answering with a tap-in birdie at 14 and another at 16 to seal the victory.

Hours before the leaders took to the stage the spotlight belonged to Tiger Woods, with massive galleries lining every hole from tee to green perhaps fearing this could be one of the last times to see the golfing icon at work.

Woods had Augusta buzzing when he claimed a record 24th consecutive made cut at Augusta National on Friday and then boldly predicted a sixth Green Jacket was in reach.

But the American great, who has conjured up a long list of magical Masters moments, could not produce another, enduring perhaps the most miserable weekend of his career.

The 48-year-old's injury-battered body appeared to quit on him Saturday as he carded a 10-over 82, his worst major round as a professional, and followed up on Sunday with a five-over 77.

Celebrated Indian-born British-American author Sir Salman Rushdie, while speaking to The Telegraph in an interview, revealed that he had a dream that he was being attacked two days before he was stabbed in August 2022.

A man, carrying a knife, attacked Rushdie at a literary festival in Chautauqua, New York. He stabbed him in his eyes and sliced the knife into his face, neck, chest, abdomen, thigh and hand. In the deadly incident, the author lost one of his eyes.

He said that the dream appeared so vivid that he started thrashing himself around in his bed violently and his wife Rachel Eliza Griffiths, who is also a novelist, had to wake him up and reassure him.

"I was quite shaken by it," Rushdie said, adding, "and I said to Eliza, I don’t want to go. And then you wake up a bit more, and you think, it’s just a dream, and you’re not going to allow your life to be ruled by something that happened in a dream. And so I thought, I’ll go. It’s a gig."

"Fifteen hundred people had bought tickets. I can’t just not show up because I had a bad dream," said the author.

The author said that he does not believe in prophecy or premonitions.

Archaeologists carried out an analysis of more than 4,000 stone artefacts which have been found on an island off northwestern Australia. The findings helped in creating a picture of the kind of life the Aboriginals lived tens of thousands of years ago.

In the discovery, it was revealed that the Indigenous people had "long-term connections" with modern-day Australia, according to David Zeanah, who is an anthropologist at California State University, Sacramento. Zeanah is also the lead author of a new study which described the analysis.

As per the study, which was published in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews on April 1, the diverse artefacts discovered on the island also found intriguing insights regarding the movement of people between the mainland and the island of Australia, especially when the last ice age peaked between 29,000 and 19,000 years ago.

In those times, the sea levels were very low and exposed the continental shelf between Australia and what is today called Barrow Island.

Speaking to Live Science, Zeanah said that thousands of years ago it would have created the high plateau of a vast, continuous plain which runs across 4,200 square miles (10,800 square km).

The archaeologists were already aware of the people who once lived on the island because of a trove of archaeological evidence which was left behind in rock shelters, once known as Boodie Cave.

However, for the new research, the scientists tried to understand beyond the island's caves and explore various open-air deposits present across Barrow Island.

In the next three years, the scientists looked into 4,400 slicing, cutting and grinding tools from a mix of sites. The researchers were surprised by the variety in the compositions of the artefacts.

Most of the tools discovered in the caves were made out of limestone which is found in abundance on the island.

Those found at the open-air sites were mostly made from rocks, which included igneous and sandstone, and matched sources found on mainland Australia.

Frequently washing the hair fades the colour, so it is better to wash your hair only twice or thrice a week.

For those who have a habit of washing their hair daily, they can skip the shampoo and directly go for conditioner.

In order to keep the dyed hair healthy, one needs to choose colour-protective shampoo.

After colour is added to our hair, it turns fragile. Hence, one needs to use conditioners often to ensure the quality of hair.

It is important to save the hair from heat damage. Hence, one should use heat protection sprays on the hair.

Masking the hair twice every week for 5 to 10 minutes adds a dose of healing nourishment to the hair and repairs it from damage.

The heat from straightening irons, curling tongs and blow-dryers damages the hair. Hence, it is advisable to dry coloured hair naturally.

The UV light from the sun also damages the colour of the hair. To save hair from that damage, one can use UV filter finishing spray.

To save the health of the coloured hair, one should prep and pre-condition it before swimming. This is because chlorine not only changes colour but also accelerates its fading.

For nourishing the hair with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E, one should choose a diet which is rich in the supplement and contains oily fish such as salmon and mackerel.

The United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), in fresh claims, said that their access to the email system of Microsoft was misused by Russian government-backed hackers to steal correspondence between the tech giant and officials.

The new claims were made in an emergency directive which was issued by the US watchdog on Thursday (April 11).

The agency, in its directive which was dated April 2, issued a warning that the authentication details shared by Microsoft email are being exploited by hackers to gain entry into the customer systems of Microsoft, which included the systems of some unspecified number of government agencies.

Speaking to the reporters, US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) senior official Eric Goldstein said that “several” US federal agencies have been notified by Microsoft about the possibility of hackers stealing their emails by getting access to login information like usernames, or passwords.

In a new study, it has been noted that organ transplants, which save people's lives, may also be altering their personalities in unexpected ways.

The paper titled “Personality Changes Associated with Organ Transplants”, which was published in the medical journal Transplantology in January discussed how various transplant recipients have seen major and long-lasting changes in their actions, thoughts and behaviour.

The investigation was carried out by researchers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the United States.

They looked into the fact that there were significant changes in the personality of a patient after an organ transplant.

The researchers also observed the types of changes recipients of heart transplants went through and if they were different from recipients of other organs.

How was the study carried out and what was found?

The study was carried out with 47 participants who filled out an online survey. Among the 47 people, 23 were heart recipients and 24 others were organ recipients.

In the study, 89 per cent of all transplant recipients said that they went through personality changes after their transplant surgery.

They reported changes in preferences for food, music, art, professional pursuits, intimacy and leisure activities. Some people also wrote about experiencing “new” memories, enhanced cognitive capabilities, heightened social and sexual adaptability and more inclination towards spiritual or religious events.

These were the types of changes which were described as either neutral or beneficial, however, there were also reports of distressing changes like anxiety, delirium, depression, sexual dysfunction and psychosis.

Many recipients also shared having “memories” which were not related to their personal experiences. Such memories generally involve sensory perceptions which were apparently related to their organ donor.

An example was highlighted by the paper: “A 56-year-old college professor received the heart of a 34-year-old police officer who tragically lost his life after he was fatally shot in the face."

“Following the transplant, the recipient reported a peculiar experience, stating, ‘A few weeks after I got my heart, I began to have dreams. I would see a flash of light right in my face, and my face gets real, real hot. It actually burns'," the paper read.

Humans may witness personality change after organ transplant: Study

In a rare case, doctors found that a mass, which was believed to have been growing in a woman's eye for two years, was actually a parasite that sometimes enters the human body through the consumption of reptiles. Contaminated crocodile meat is believed to be the reason behind the rare infection. This has emerged as the first case of its kind in the history of medical literature and was reported in JAMA Ophthalmology on Thursday (April 11). The woman was diagnosed by the authors with an infection called "ocular pentastomiasis". This is a rare eye infection which occurs because of parasites known as "pentastomids". In the woman's case, the parasite had embedded itself below the conjunctiva or the clear outer membrane of the left eye of the patient and had grown to about 0.4 inches (10 millimetres) long. According to the doctors, the 28-year-old from Basankusu in Congo did not show any other symptoms apart from the outgrown mass in the corner of her eye, reported her doctors. Also Read: We are the infectors: Humans pass on viruses to animals twice than the other way around! After the examination, the doctors found that the mass could be removed by surgery. It was during the surgery that a pale, C-shaped larva was revealed. The parasite was sent for further analysis and the scientists discovered that it was part of a species called Armillifer grandis. How do such parasites enter the human body? It is known that snakes are used by Armillifer parasites as their hosts when they enter the final stage of their life cycle. In the respiratory tracts of different pythons and vipers, these parasites lay their eggs. Eventually, the eggs move from the lungs and enter the environment through the mouth or the digestive tract of the snake. They are generally picked by small mammals like rodents, which a snake is likely to eat. In these hosts, they generally develop into larvae before getting eaten by a snake, which completes the life cycle of the parasite. The parasite enters the human body when they eat or drink food or water which is contaminated with its eggs or by coming in close contact with infected snakes, wrote the case report authors. Watch: Are Humans giving more viruses to animals than they give us? However, in this case, the woman said that she had never handled or eaten any snakes. "However, she was used to eating crocodile meat. No case of Armillifer ocular infection has ever been reported in individuals who eat crocodile meat, but crocodiles can be infected by pentastomids," said her doctors. Hence, there is a chance that the woman contracted the infection when she consumed crocodile meat containing parasite eggs. "This meat could also have been contaminated via infected snake meat on a market stall," said the doctors. (With inputs from agencies)
