China Daily reported that neighbouring Sichuan province also witnessed rainfall in some regions. The National Meteorological Center of the country forecasted heavy rains in most parts of Sichuan and Chongqing in the next 10 days.

It forecasted five to eight rainy days, with precipitation 40-100 percent higher than normal for the time of year, with isolated areas receiving twice as much.

Therefore, residents in affected areas should prepare for flooding and landslide risks since the ongoing dry spell has left caked hillsides less able to absorb fast-moving waters.

According to Zhang Yan of Chongqing's meteorological bureau, the city's ongoing heat wave is expected to ease, with daily highs in most parts of the municipality struggling to reach 35 °C and widespread rainfall forecast. "The city should prepare for the upcoming downpours," China Daily quoted him as saying.

The world's second-largest economy has been hit by record temperatures, flash floods, and droughts this summer, phenomena that scientists have warned are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. The recent heatwave and drought on the Chinese mainland have severely affected the agriculture sector, putting the harvest under "severe threat".

The French MEPs charge that the UK has disregarded its environmental obligations and put fishing and marine life at risk.

British water firms have stated that they are spending money to find a solution.

The MEPs said in a letter requesting that the European Commission take legal or political action that the United Kingdom has ignored its environmental obligations since leaving the European Union.

Their claim was "just not true," according to a UK government spokesperson.

The UK was still a signatory to pertinent United Nations conventions on protecting shared waterways, the MEPs contended, even though it was no longer subject to EU laws.

The three MEPs are all members of En Marche, a pro-EU group supported by French President Emmanuel Macron. The chairman of the fishing committee of the European Parliament is one of them, Pierre Karleskind.

He stated that the UK could not be permitted to disregard its obligations under the terms of Brexit and jeopardise the 20 years of advancement of water quality standards in Europe.

The MEPs warn that short-term sewage leaks could endanger fishing, oyster farming, and bathing waters around the French coast. They could also have a negative impact on marine biodiversity.

China has grudging but immense respect for India, says former Australian PM Kevin Rudd

New Delhi has repeatedly called upon the Russian and Ukrainian sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue, and also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two countries.

India for the first time on August 24 voted against Russia during a “procedural vote” at the United Nations Security Council on Ukraine, as the 15-member powerful UN body invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address a meeting through a video teleconference.

This is for the first time that India has voted against Russia on the issue of Ukraine, after the Russian military action began in February. So far, New Delhi has abstained at the UN Security Council on Ukraine, much to the annoyance of the Western powers led by the United States.

Western nations, including the US, have imposed major economic and other sanctions on Russia following the aggression.

India has not criticised Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. New Delhi has repeatedly called upon the Russian and Ukrainian sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue, and also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two countries.

India currently is a non-permanent member of the UNSC for a two-year term, which ends in December.

On August 24, the UNSC held a meeting to take stock of the now six-month-old conflict on the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

As the meeting began, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily A. Nebenzia requested a procedural vote concerning Ukrainian President’s participation in the meeting by video teleconference.

Following statements by him and Ferit Hoxha of Albania, the Council extended an invitation to&nbsp;Zelenskyy to participate in the meeting via video teleconference by a vote of 13 in favour to one against. Russia voted against such an invitation, while China abstained.

Nebenzia insisted that Russia does not oppose Zelenskyy’s participation, but such participation must be in-person. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council decided to work virtually, but such meetings were informal and, after the pandemic’s peak, the Council returned to the provisional rules of procedure, he argued.

Reiterating that his country’s objection pertains specifically to the President’s participation by video teleconference, he called for a procedural vote on this matter, to which India and 12 other countries did not agree and supported Zelenskyy to address the Council via videoconference.

Albania’s Hoxha argued that Ukraine is at war, and the situation in that country requires the President to be there. Due to this unique situation, he supported Zelenskyy’s participation via video teleconference and urged other members to do the same.

Nebenzia regretted that Council members had spoken out against complying with the rules of the organ. “We can understand the logic of Kyiv’s Western backers…,” he said, expressing disappointment that other members contributed to the erosion of the Council’s very foundation and practices.

Soon thereafter, Zelenskyy in his remarks via a videoconference called for the Russian Federation to be held accountable for its crimes of aggression against Ukraine. “If Moscow is not stopped now, then all these Russian murderers will inevitably end up in other countries,” he said.

“It is on the territory of Ukraine that the world’s future will be decided,” he added. “Our independence is your security,” he told the UNSC.

Zelenskyy alleged that Russia has placed the world on the brink of nuclear catastrophe by turning the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant into a war zone. The plant has six reactors — only one exploded at Chernobyl — and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must take permanent control of the situation as soon as possible, he said.

The Ukrainian President called on Russia to cease its “nuclear blackmail” and completely withdraw from the plant.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed grave concern over the situation in and around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, underscoring that “the warning lights are flashing”.

Any actions that might endanger the physical integrity, safety or security of the plant are unacceptable, and any further escalation of the situation could lead to self-destruction, he said and called for the security of the plant to be ensured, for the facility to be re-established as purely civilian infrastructure and for the IAEA to conduct a mission to the site as soon as possible.

Guterres also expressed concern over alleged violations of international humanitarian law.

US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield alleged that “Russia’s goal is as clear as ever: to dismantle Ukraine as a geopolitical entity and erase it from the world map.

“Its disinformation campaigns are increasingly being weaponised to prepare for further attempts to annex Ukrainian territory,” she said.

However, the international community will never recognise Russia’s attempt to change Ukraine’s borders by force, she told the UN Security Council.

Noting that Ukraine had an impeccable record of nuclear energy safety and security at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, she said the Russian Federation recklessly attacked and seized control of that site by force, risking nuclear disaster.

The American envoy voiced concern about Moscow’s “so-called filtration operation”, which involves the systematic and forced deportation of Ukrainian civilians to remote areas of the Russian Federation.

Envoys from France, Ireland, Norway, United Kingdom, Gabon, Ghana, Mexico and China, along with the European Union in its capacity as observers also spoke on the occasion.

Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day on Wednesday, which also marked exactly six months since the start of Russia’s military offensive against the country on February 24.

In a first, India votes against Russia in UNSC during procedural vote on Ukraine

China reportedly has resumed mass production of guided-missile destroyers and is "exponentially" enhancing its warship capabilities, according to local media.

The development of a blue-water navy will be part of China's military modernization and expansion by 2035, according to the Global Times, which is published under the control of the Chinese Communist party, in order to better defend the nation's interests and match its international standing.

A navy that travels through deep oceans and conducts operations all over the world is known as a blue-water navy.

According to Naval News, five destroyers of type 052D, equipped to fire long-range missiles, are currently being constructed, as The Guardian reported.

The Australian National University's Strategic and Defence Studies Center's John Blaxland, a professor of international security and intelligence studies, called China's military buildup "deeply worrying."

"When you look at capability, it is growing exponentially," he said.

"Its going from being a brown-water navy designed for close protection of China's shores to a true blue-water navy.

"They are designed to assert China's influence to match its economic growth, not just in the South China Sea, not just in the first island chain [which includes Taiwan], but also more expansively throughout the Indo-Pacific and the Pacific Ocean.

"It's growing the navy to bolster its economic heft with military muscle."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to recapture territory seized after the February&nbsp;24 invasion and in earlier incursions beginning in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.

Out of 1,005 people in the United States who took part in an online poll last week, 53% expressed support for backing Ukraine "until all Russian forces are withdrawn from territory claimed by Ukraine." Only 18% said they opposed.

That support came from both sides of the political divide, although Democratic voters were more likely to back the position, with 66% of Democrats in support compared to 51% of Republicans.

A slim majority, 51%, also supported providing arms such as guns and anti-tank weapons to Ukraine's military, compared with 22% who opposed.

In previous polls, higher numbers of Americans have backed providing arms to Ukraine but directly comparable polling was not available.

In line with past polling, there was little support among Americans from across the political spectrum for sending U.S. troops to Ukraine. Only 26% said they supported such an intervention, but 43% agreed with sending U.S. troops to NATO allies neighboring Ukraine who are not at war with Russia.

The poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.

Just over half of Americans say US should back Ukraine until Russia withdraws: Poll

Due to concerns about how the ride-sharing company treats drivers and delivery riders, one of Australia's largest Christian churches has temporarily banned staff from using Uber and Uber Eats.

According to the Victoria and Tasmania Synod of the Uniting Church in Australia, Uber should only be used for work-related purposes when taxis and other ride-sharing apps aren't available. It cited the treatment of drivers as independent contractors, which led to many of them earning less than the minimum wage and putting in a lot of overtime.

After dealing with complaints about how it treats drivers for years, Uber Technologies Inc. stated that it was "committed to improving standards for independent contractors in the gig economy."

Uber's treatment of drivers reached a breaking point in February of last year when the company was forced by a landmark UK Supreme Court decision to recognise a group of drivers as "workers," giving them the right to a minimum wage, vacation pay, and other benefits.&nbsp;

Following similar allegations, Uber finally declared that it would apply the classification to all of its UK drivers.

Uber resolved claims that it had misled drivers about their potential earnings by agreeing to pay the Federal Trade Commission $20 million in January 2017.

On behalf of thousands of Uber drivers, a class action lawsuit was brought in 2017 with the claim that Uber's "upfront prices" policy failed to give drivers the 80% of fares to which they were legally entitled. Each driver in the class received at least $20 as part of the $345,622 settlement.

Uber has been at the centre of several disputes. This covers both unethical commercial activities like disobeying local laws and undermining rival businesses.

It has also come under fire for how it handles complaints of workplace sexual harassment and racial discrimination.

Uber's retention of customer data has also drawn criticism, particularly in light of how it handled data leaks.

Due to these problems, the company is no longer permitted to conduct business in some nations.
