Russia has banned investors from so-called unfriendly countries from selling shares in key energy projects and banks in the nation until the end of the year, stepping up pressure in the sanctions stand-off with the West.&nbsp;

An Israeli court on Tuesday sentenced the former Gaza head of a major US-based aid agency to 12 years in prison for funnelling millions of dollars to Islamist group Hamas.

The Beersheba district court in southern Israel issued a sentence of "12 years' prison time, less the detention" already served for World Vision's Mohammed al-Halabi, who has been jailed throughout the past six years of court proceedings.

The sentencing comes after the court issued a ruling in June that Halabi was guilty of siphoning off millions of dollars and tonnes of steel to Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave.

Halabi, who was arrested in June 2016 and indicted in August of that year, has consistently denied any irregularities.

His lawyer reiterated his claim of innocence following Tuesday's sentencing.

"He says that he's innocent, he did nothing, and there is no evidence," Maher Hanna said. "On the contrary, he proved in the court above any reasonable doubt that he made sure that no money would be (given) directly to Hamas."

According to Hanna, if Halabi had admitted to wrongdoings, he would have been released.

"But he insisted that truth also has value. And for his personal values and for the international humanitarian work values, he insisted on the truth, and he cannot admit a thing that he did not do," the lawyer said.

Secret evidence

Hanna said they would appeal the verdict to the supreme court.

The Israeli prosecution said it was also considering an appeal.

"These are very severe deeds, the defendant funded terror with millions of shekels, helped strengthen the Hamas tunnel network," Moran Guez of the southern district attorney's office.

"We asked for 16-21 years prison. We'll read the sentencing and consider our actions," she told reporters.

Halabi had been convicted of membership in a terrorist group -- Hamas -- and of financing terrorist activities, of having "transmitted information to the enemy" as well as the possession of a weapon.

Much of the evidence against him was kept secret, with Israel citing "security concerns", prompting his legal team to question the verdict's legitimacy.

In its sentencing, the court said Halabi had joined the military wing of Hamas in 2004, and was "planted in World Vision" the following year.

The court said that besides 12 tonnes of steel and other materials provided to Hamas for their tunnels and positions, he also gave the Islamist rules of the territory "millions of dollars" of World Vision's money "to fund terror".

The 12-year sentence was also meant to deter Gazans working in international aid groups from aiding Hamas, according to the court.

"There are huge amounts of money that if they reach terror organisations, will contribute to strengthening the terror regime in Gaza," the sentencing said.

'Deeply disappointing'

World Vision, a US-based Christian charity with almost 40,000 employees globally, said the sentencing was "deeply disappointing".

Its spokesperson Sharon Marshall stressed her objection to "any form of terrorism or activities that support terrorism," saying they "don't see any evidence of those things in this case."

"We fully support Mohammed's intent to appeal the verdict and the sentence in this case, and we call for a fair and transparent process at the supreme court," she said in a statement.

"We remain committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children in the region and hope we'll be able to advance our humanitarian work in the context of our longstanding cooperation with the relevant authorities in Palestine and Israel," Marshall said.

Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine director at Human Rights Watch, called the 12-year sentence a "profound miscarriage of justice," with the six-year trial and use of secret evidence constituting a "mockery of due process".

"He should long ago have been released," Shakir said in a statement.

Following Halabi's arrest, the Australian government, a major donor to World Vision, announced it was freezing funding to projects in the Gaza Strip.

'We will chase them to the border,’ says Zelensky, as Ukraine battles to retake Kherson 

As media freedom in Pakistan continues to deteriorate, another senior journalist was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Toba Tek Singh province of Pakistan’s Punjab when the deceased journalist, Muhammad Younis was on his way to his farmland at Mouza Manganwala on his motorcycle when two men hiding in a field opened gunfire, according to Dawn.

The shooting incident left the journalist dead on the spot and the attackers then fled the scene.&nbsp;

Taking notice of the brutal murder, the Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Faisal Shahkar has sought a report from Faisalabad Regional Police Officer (RPO) Babar Sarfraz Alpa.

Moreover, Jhang District Police Officer (DPO) Rashid Hidayat ordered the immediate arrest of the journalist’s killers, constituting a team consisting of Shorkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and other expert officers to probe the incident, Dawn reported.

The curb on media freedom in Pakistan has highlighted that media freedom has been under serious question in the South-Asian country.

The media freedom paints an abysmal picture of the realities of being a journalist in the country. In the last year alone, many journalists were killed in the line of duty and how overall attempts to stifle the media and block access to information have grown, according to Dawn.

In the past year, the financial standing of media houses has also worsened. Two media workers took their own lives due to unemployment. The situation today, the report concludes, is worse than during the previous two years.

The everyday hardships faced by journalists who risk their lives in mostly low-paid jobs to fulfil a critical role in Pakistan continue to be subjected to incessant violence and abductions.

Media workers, both field reporters and desk staff are increasingly experiencing either harassment or financial hardship or both. They are being threatened, silenced and squeezed. Be it a prime-time TV anchor or a beat reporter, the threats exist for everyone.

Even media group owners are not immune to such harassment.

Notably, Pakistan has been ranked the fifth most dangerous place for the practice of journalism, according to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

According to the media reports, 138 media persons in the country lost their lives in the line of duty between 1990 and 2020. Pakistan remains among the top 10 countries where predators of attacks on journalists and media go unpunished.

Now the state has many golf courses, Japanese restaurants and even locals have started learning Japanese. Even Japan has special love for Gujarat and as many as 125 Japanese companies are functioning in the state. It looks like mini-Japan." 
 
Acknowledging Japan`s `Kaizen` management concept, Modi brought the Kaizen-related experiences and learning of Gujarat to PMO (Prime Minister`s Office) and other Central government departments.

The Chinese navy on Sunday kept a close watch as two American warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait, separating China and Taiwan, the first such operation since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei early this month, sparking a new round of tensions between the two countries.

The ETC conducted security tracking and monitoring of the US warships' passage in the whole course and had all movements of the two US warships under control, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the ETC, said in a statement.

The troops of the PLA Eastern Theatre Command always stay on high alert and get ready to thwart any provocation, he added.

Criticising the American naval ships' transit through Taiwan Strait, a write-up in the state-run Global Times said the "US is trying to appease the Taiwan authorities and regional allies, conveying to them that Washington will not back down under military pressure from the Chinese mainland."

This is the first time the US warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait, a busy and strategic waterway separating China and Taiwan, after Pelosi's visit though according to the official media accounts here, over 100 American warships transited through the water since 2012, challenging China's claims over the area.

Regular high-level visits to Taipei are long-standing US policy," said Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Blackburn met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and other senior officials during her three-day stay, the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.

After Pelosi's visit, China went ballistic conducting massive military exercises for several days including firing missiles over the Taiwan island, sparking concerns that Beijing may be contemplating a military offensive.

Taliban accuses Pakistan of allowing US drones to fly into Afghanistan territory

Since June, the death toll from floods in Pakistan has surpassed 1,000, with thousands more injured or displaced.

The floods affected the lives of millions of people after which the Pakistan government declared a national emergency.

Despite the fact that the disaster affects everyone equally, women, the elderly, and the disabled suffer the most.

According to Karachi-based journalist Lubna Jerar Naqvi, the poor, the disabled, and women are especially vulnerable and disproportionately affected by natural disasters.

According to Naqvi, the destruction of infrastructure will have a greater impact on women than on men because women spend more time at home, which means that with so many homes damaged, thousands of women and their children will be forced to live outside.

She added that being forced to remain in the open and share space with strangers could have an effect on a woman's mental state.

Pakistan has been in the midst of a humanitarian crisis since July. The country has been devastated by deadly floods, affecting 15% of its population.

According to the official tally, over 1,000 people have died and another 1,527 have been injured as a result of the rains and flooding since June 14.

These figures do not provide an accurate picture of how many women have been killed, injured, or displaced. Furthermore, women and girls are underrepresented in mainstream media and social media. This is when women account for roughly 48.5 percent of Pakistan's population.

Natural disasters such as droughts, floods, heat waves, extreme colds, and earthquakes are common in Pakistan. Pakistan ranks eighth among countries most affected by extreme weather events between 2000 and 2019, according to the Climate Risk Index 2021.
