In a shocking development, three teenage girls lost their lives whilst they were undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) in Sierra Leone.

According to the reports, police have launched an inquiry into the incident.

Adamsay Sesay aged 12, Salamatu Jalloh aged 13 and Kadiatu Bangura aged 17, lost their lives at the time of the initiation ceremonies in the country’s North West province in January, said the local media reports.

The executive secretary of the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP), an organisation that aims to end FGM in Sierra Leone, Aminata Koroma, as per the Guardian, said that the parents of the deceased and the ones who put them through this process were arrested and are currently in police custody.

<h2>What is FGM?</h2>

Female genital mutilation (FGM) includes all the procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other parts of&nbsp;the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.&nbsp;

According to the World Health Organisation, the practice has absolutely no health benefits and rather causes severe bleeding, problems while urinating, cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths.&nbsp;

This practice, which is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15, is internationally considered a violation of the human rights of girls and women.&nbsp;

In the year 2012, the United Nations passed a resolution imposing a ban on it. However, it is still practised in nearly 30 countries.

Though UNICEF is yet to share the latest figures on the global prevalence of FGM next month, as per&nbsp;current estimates, at least 200 million women and girls have undergone this practice.

FGM still remains legal in Sierra Leone despite calls from human rights advocates and activists.&nbsp;

This procedure, which is considered a traditional initiation ritual marking a girl's entry into womanhood, is carried out by senior members of the all-women Bondo secret societies, known as 'soweis'.

The executive secretary of the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP), Koroma, said that the organisation was pressing for a law that would criminalise FGM.

“The results have been very encouraging,” said Koroma.

“There are many positive aspects of the Bondo societies,” she was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

“They teach girls about the medicinal properties of plants and pass down the history of our culture. Our slogan is, ‘Say yes to Bondo, no to cutting'",&nbsp;Koroma added.

Russia to incorporate ex-Wagner units into its national guard, says UK Ministry of Defence

In the latest development from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Qatar on Thursday (Feb 1) revealed that the Palestinian militant group has given "initial positive confirmation" to a proposal for the cessation of fighting in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.

"The meeting in Paris succeeded in consolidating the proposals...," Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said of talks Qatari, US, Israeli and Egyptian officials had on Sunday.

"That proposal has been approved by the Israeli side and now we have an initial positive confirmation from the Hamas&nbsp;side."

Ansari stated that there were hopes of "good news" about a new pause in the fighting "in the next couple of weeks".

However, the Hamas group stated that there was no consensus yet on the proposed plan.

"There is no agreement on the framework of the agreement yet, the factions have important observations, and the Qatari statement is rushed and not true," the news agency AFP quoted a source close to Hamas as saying.

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians. The militants also seized around 250 hostages, with Israel reporting that about 132 remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 28 deceased captives.

The ensuing Israeli military offensive, in response to the attacks, has led to an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with at least 26,422 killed in Gaza, as per the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.&nbsp;

Hamas gives 'initial positive confirmation' on truce plan, says Qatar

France's leading farmers' union the FNSEA along with its close ally the Young Farmers (JA) on Thursday (Feb 1), called to end nationwide roadblocks over pay, tax and regulation.

FNSEA chief Arnaud Rousseau released a statement saying that the government was "listening" to their demands after Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced cash support and other measures for farmers.

"We have decided to suspend the roadblocks and move to a new form of mobilisation," JA president Arnaud Gaillot said at the same news conference.

Earlier in the day, farmers protesting across Europe over better working conditions, higher pay and less red tape, blocked roads around an EU summit taking place in Brussels with around 1,300 tractors, said a Belgian police official.

He further added that the farmers were mainly from Belgium.

France's top farmers' unions call for end to road blockades

According to local media reports, stringent measures are in place to ensure security, with jail staff deployed inside and Bani Gala and Islamabad police officials stationed outside the residence.

Bushra Bibi to serve prison sentence in husband Imran Khan’s residence designated as ‘sub-jail’

India's Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Interim Budget in parliament on Thursday (Jan 1), laid stress on how the country's digital public infrastructure emanated as the ‘factor of production’ in the 21st century and has played a significant role in the formalisation of the economy.

"Digital Public Infra is a new factor of production in this 20th century and is instrumental in the formalisation of the economy," Sitharaman said during her speech.

The statement by the finance minister stands true as the country's digital payments, via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), surpassed 6821.26 million transactions in the first 17 days of January 2024.

India's digital public infrastructure (DPI) which comprises of technology stack Aadhaar, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and others, has been recently gaining international recognition.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“In 2022, they (digital payments) showed an increase of 76% in transactions and 91% in value. Fiscal support for this digital public infrastructure will continue in 2023-24,” the FM said.

The people in the country have created over 51.11 crore accounts (61,59,439.87) with a deposit of over Rs 2.08 lakh crore (26.67 billion USD).

<h2>Austin's secret hospitalisation</h2>

The 70-year-old underwent surgery on Dec 22 to treat prostate cancer and came back home the same day.

However, he was again hospitalised on Jan 1 for complications including nausea and severe pain and was discharged on Jan 15.

"The Secretary continues to recover well and, on the advice of doctors, will recuperate and perform his duties remotely for a period of time before returning full-time to the Pentagon," the statement said. "He has full access to required secure communications capabilities."

Austin had kept his cancer diagnosis and hospitalisation from President Biden and senior officials a secret until January.

His mishandling of the situation was a violation of the protocol for top-ranking cabinet officials, who reportedly have to inform well in advance of planned medical absences and identify the one who would be filling in for them.

He had earlier released a statement saying that he "could have done a better job" and took "full responsibility" for the secrecy over his hospitalisation.

The EU on Monday demanded an "urgent" audit of the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA and said it is reviewing funding, following Israeli allegations that some staff participated in Hamas's October 7 attack.

The audit must be led by European Commission-appointed experts and conducted alongside a UN investigation into the claims, commission spokesman Eric Mamer told journalists.

"What is absolutely clear is that these actions are urgent. They are important and they should be launched without any delay," Mamer said.

The European Union is one of UNRWA's top donors.

A commission statement said the EU executive "will determine upcoming funding decisions for UNRWA in light of the very serious allegations made on 24 January relating to the involvement of UNRWA staff in the heinous 7 October attacks".

It said that no additional funding to UNRWA "is foreseen until the end of February".

But it added that humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza and in the West Bank "will continue unabated through partner organisations".

UNRWA has fired several staff members over Israel's accusations, which have prompted numerous countries, including the United States, France, Britain, Germany and Japan, to announce they were suspending further funding to the UN agency.

The European Commission said it "will review the matter in light of the outcome of the investigation announced by the UN and the actions it will take".

President Joe Biden "will respond" to the Sunday attack "in a very consequential way. But we don't seek a war with Iran. We're not looking for a wider conflict in the Middle East," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in an interview with CNN.

After the drone strike hit the American outpost in Jordan, Biden released a statement vowing to hold the perpetrators to account.

"While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq," Biden said in a statement on the attack.

"We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt -- we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing," he added.

The US Central Command said that dozens were injured from the attack near the Syrian border further adding that the identities of the ones killed will be withheld pending notification of their families. &nbsp;

The French farmers have now been staging demonstrations for over a week causing traffic disruptions.

The country, on Tuesday morning, witnessed 40 kilometres (25 miles) &nbsp;of traffic jams around the area circulating Paris, according to monitoring site Sytadin.

First, the farmers blocked the A13 highway to the west of the capital, then they moved to the A4 to the east and the A6 on which hundreds of tractors rolled towards Paris from the south.&nbsp;

France is the European Union's biggest agricultural producer and the farmers there are staging protests over excessive regulation on environmental protection and have raised concerns regarding the salaries being paid to them which aren't enough.

Their concerns also include competition from cheaper imports and food price negotiations.

Notably, competition from cheaper imports and environmental rules are issues shared by producers across the European Union, whereas issues such as food price negotiations are more specific to France.

<h2>High costs</h2>

Farmers claim that several producers are not being able to cover high costs for energy, fertiliser and transport because of the government's push to cut down on food inflation.

The French government's plan to discontinue a tax break on diesel fuel, designated for farmers, is also one of the major concerns raised.

Large imports from Ukraine, for which the EU has waived quotas and levies since Russia's invasion, renewed negotiations to clinch a trade pact between the EU and South American group Mercosur, have unfolded discontentment around unfair competition in sugar, grain and meat.

The imports are disliked for driving down European prices while failing to meet environmental requirements placed on farmers within the EU.

After this, the government kept extending the ban on September 26, 2003, February 8, 2006, February 7, 2008, February 5, 2010, February 3, 2012, February 1, 2014, and January 31, 2019.

The latest move came taking into consideration the fact that&nbsp;SIMI is "continuing to be involved in fomenting terrorism, disturbing the peace and communal harmony in the country which are prejudicial to the sovereignty, security and integrity of India."

Several criminal cases have been filed against SIMI and its members under multiple sections of law including the UAPA.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the decision was taken under the Indian government's 'zero tolerance' policy.

According to the fresh notification, SIMI has been involved in activities&nbsp;which are "prejudicial to the security of the country and have the potential of disturbing peace and communal harmony and disrupting the the secular fabric of the country."

It also pointed to SIMI's links to various cases, including the one registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) against Athar Parvej and Mohd Jalaluddin of Phulawari Sharif, Patna relating to a conspiracy to disrupt the visit of the Prime Minister in July 2022.

The notification further pointed out that "if the unlawful activities of the SIMI (/topic/simi) are not curbed and controlled immediately, it will take the opportunity to continue its subversive activities and re-organize its activists who are still absconding; disrupt the secular fabric of the country by polluting the minds of the people by creating communal disharmony; propagate anti-national sentiments; escalate secessionism by supporting militancy; and undertake activities which are prejudicial to the integrity and security of the country."
