Budget 2024: How Colonial Baggage Was Shed During Jaitley-Sitharaman Years

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in 2017 ended the 92-year-old colonial-era practice of presenting the budget on the last day of February.

The budget is now presented on February 1 every year.

Remember those much-awaited railway budget speeches by Lalu Yadav and then Mamata Banerjee after him? Well, they are now the things of the past. Jaitley also abolished the colonial-era practice of presenting a separate budget for Railways by the concerned minister.

Nirmala Sitharaman replaced the traditional briefcase with a 'bahi khata' in 2019.

In 1999, Yashwant Sinha, the finance minister in the then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, changed the time for the presentation of the Union Budget from 5 pm to 11 am.

Here is how colonial baggage has been shed over the years, one budget at a time

Budget 2024: When Record Keepers Became Record Makers

The interim Budget to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be the sixth Union Budget in a row that she'll present.

Former Prime Minister Morarji Desai has presented and delivered Union Budget speeches a total of 10 times.

Sitharaman delivered the longest budget speech while presenting the Union Budget 2020-21 when she spoke for 2 hours and 42 minutes.

Dr Manmohan Singh, the finance minister in the then-Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao's cabinet, delivered a budget speech with the most words. At 18,650 words in his 1991 speech, often described as the most consequential budget of independent India, Singh's record stands tall ahead of Arun Jaitley's 2018 budget (18,604 words)

Indira Gandhi in 1970-71 was the first woman to present the Union Budget.

The interim budget 2024 will be announced on Feb 1, 2024

Xi Jinping received the credentials of the Afghan ambassador during an official ceremony. Beijing's move is a reciprocation of the Taliban's step in September 2023 when it welcomed Zhao Sheng as Chinese ambassador in Kabul. Taliban-run Afghanistan government's foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi had hailed the nomination of Zhao Sheng as a "significant step with a significant message". China's Xi on Jan 30 welcomed Bilal Karimi as an ambassador to Beijing and accepted his credentials as a special representative of the so-called Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years with 'rigorous punishment' in the Toshakhana case, Pakistan's Geo News reported. The latest prison sentence against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader came just eight days ahead of scheduled national elections in Pakistan and a day after he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets.

The two were also disqualified from holding any public office for 10 years.

Imran and Bushra were also slapped with a fine of $2.81 million. While Khan is already in prison, visuals on social media showed Bushra Bibi reaching the Adiala Jail for arrest.

But wasn't Imran Khan already sentenced in Toshakhana case?

Yes. Imran Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023, when an Islamabad trial court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts during his prime ministerial tenure, collectively dubbed as Toshakhana case. The court had also barred him from participating in active politics for five years.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a robotic sensor that reads braille at twice the speed of humans. Through advanced machine learning algorithms, the robotic sensor glides over braille text, achieving reading speeds of approximately 315 words per minute with close to 90 per cent accuracy.

What does it mean?

The feat marks a significant advancement in the realms of tactile sensing and robotic dexterity.

While the primary focus of the robot's development was not to assist visually impaired individuals in reading, its success in high-speed braille reading highlights the potential for advancements in robotic sensitivity.

Braille, with its demand for heightened tactile sensitivity, serves as an exemplary test case for the development of robotic hands or prosthetics that can emulate the sensitivity of human fingertips.
