Events in last three years have seen China's departure from this promises. The National Security Law has been used to curb many freedoms previously granted to citizens in Hong Kong. The city has seen independent media outlets including the popular and influential Apple Daily, shut down for good. Brazilian police and indigenous search teams dismissed reports on Monday that they had found the bodies of a British reporter and a Brazilian indigenous expert missing in the Amazon jungle, dashing hopes of a quick resolution in the week-old case.

On Sunday, police said search teams had found the belongings of freelance reporter Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira, a former official at federal indigenous agency Funai, in a creek off the river where they were last seen on June 5.

However, a federal police statement and a spokesman for local indigenous association UNIVAJA, which has organized search efforts since June 5, denied subsequent reports of two bodies turned up in the search.

"I've spoken with the team in the field and it's not true," said Eliesio Marubo, a lawyer for UNIVAJA. "The search goes on."

More than 100 indigenous people, many in body paint and headdresses, marched on Monday in Atalaia do Norte, the nearest town to where Phillips and Pereira were last seen, to demand better treatment of native peoples and justice for the two men.

They were on a reporting trip in the remote jungle area near the border with Peru and Colombia that is home to the world's largest number of uncontacted indigenous people. The wild and lawless region has lured cocaine-smuggling gangs, along with illegal loggers, miners and hunters.

News of the pair's disappearance echoed globally, with human rights organizations, environmentalists and free press advocates urging Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to step up the search.

Bolsonaro, who once faced tough questioning from Phillips at a news conference over weakening environmental law enforcement, said last week that the two men "were on an adventure that is not recommended" and speculated they could have been executed.

The case was thrown into confusion early on Monday by reports of a diplomatic briefing for the family of Phillips.

The Guardian reported that a Brazilian diplomat told Paul Sherwood, the journalist's brother-in-law, that authorities were working to identify two bodies tied to a tree near the river.

No authorities or search teams in Brazil provided any corroboration of that development.

A police statement on Sunday described belongings of the two men that had been recovered, including an ID card for Pereira. A firefighter on a search team told reporters of a backpack with clothes and a laptop tied to a tree trunk near the river.

Brazilian police had also said late on Friday that they were analyzing "organic material" found in the river to see if it was human, but four people involved in the investigation told Reuters it seemed more likely to be of animal origin.

The material was found near the port of Atalaia do Norte, more than 40 miles (65 km) downstream from where Phillips and Pereira were last seen on a slow-moving river, the sources said. The material's condition suggested it could have been scraps from a nearby butcher rather than remains carried downstream.

The Brazilian embassy in London confirmed it has been in contact with the Phillips family, at their request, but would not comment on the details provided in the briefing. Relatives of Phillips could not be reached for comment.

State police detectives involved in the investigation told Reuters they are focusing on poachers and illegal fisherman in the area, who clashed often with Pereira as he organized indigenous patrols of the local reservation.

Police have arrested one fisherman, Amarildo da Costa, known as "Pelado," on a weapons charge and are keeping him in custody as they investigate the case.

Costa's lawyers and family have said he fished legally on the river and denied he had any role in the men's disappearance.

No bodies found in hunt for British journalist, Brazil police say

A Canadian man who rammed his rental van into a crowd in Toronto in 2019 was sentenced to life in prison on Moday (June 13). He will not get parole for first 25 years of his sentennce. He act of ramming the car into the crowd had caused 11 deaths.

Alek Minassian, the convict, was 25 at the time of the attack. He was found guilty by a Canadian judge just over a year ago, in March 2021.&nbsp;

On April 23, 2018, Minassian drove a white rental van at full speed down streets and sidewalks in the Canadian metropolis, aiming at passers-by for a little more than a mile.&nbsp;

Ten people were killed and 16 injured in the attack -- but the death toll rose to 11 at the end of October 2021 when an injured woman who had spent more than three years in hospital also succumbed to her injuries.&nbsp;

It was the worst attack in Toronto's history.&nbsp;

The sentence came within three weeks of Canada's Supreme Court striking down cumulative sentences for murderers. The provision of the criminal code dated back to 2011. It allowed judges to impose extremely long prison sentences on killers who caused numerous deaths.

The Court concluded that a prison sentence which "greatly exceeds the life expectancy of any human person is degrading by its absurdity and, therefore, contrary to human dignity".&nbsp;

"I'm definitely not satisfied," Elwood Delaney, whose grandmother died in the attack, told reporters. 
Minassian "sat there, showed no emotion, barely looked up at anybody reading an impact statement," adding, "I hold a lot of anger towards that man."

Year-round supply of safe blood in hospitals is of immense importance as it enables us to be prepared for emergencies. Mars has been favourite candidate of humankind to search for life just next door in our solar system. Martians attacking Earth has been a recurrent theme in movies and books. The theme is so popular that it almost appears that we secretly wish our planet to be invaded by Martians.

So how about an idea that someone is staring at us from the surface of the red planet? The idea sure sends a chill down our spine as it suggests that while we were busy understanding our neighbour by sending spacecrafts, someone (or something!) on the planet instead had its eyes at us.

But thrill seekers among us need to hold their horses for a bit as this photo is of a massive crater on the surface of Mars.

That does not mean it doesn't look scary.

The crater is almost the shape of an eye and complete with a blackened region at the centre. The crater is 30 kilometres across and is located in a region in southern hemisphere of Mars. The region is named Aonia Terra.

This region on Mars features many craters formed due to massive impacts 4 billion years ago. At that time, the solar system was in its infancy and planets were being formed. These infant planets were being battered by huge space rocks that were roaming around in the newly forming solar system.

Earth was battered as well. But much of the evidence of such 'bombardment' was erased to to various natural processes that have been going on for billions of years.

He said that image of a 12-year-old injured in a Russian attack was the enduring face representing deeds of Russia.

"These very facts will underscore the way in which Russia is seen by the world," he said.

Russians had destroyed a bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River linking Sievierodonetsk with its twin city of Lysychansk, Gaidai said.

That left just one of three bridges still standing.

"If after new shelling the bridge collapses, the city will truly be cut off. There will be no way of leaving Sievierodonetsk in a vehicle," Gaidai said, noting the lack of a cease-fire agreement and no agreed evacuation corridors.

The study has been done by Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), an independent, Finland-based group. The study report has come as Kyiv is urging the West to sever all ties with Russia.

Europe is heavily dependent on Russian oil. Earlier this month, the EU agreed to halt most of these imports. Though the bloc aims to reduce gas shipments by two-thirds this year, an embargo is not in the cards at present.

As per the research report, supply to EU made up 61 per cent of Russia's fossil fuel exports in first 100 days of Ukraine war. The exports were worth USD 60 billion. China was the top importer at 12.6 billion euros, Germany (12.1 billion) and Italy (7.8 billion).&nbsp;

Russia's fossil fuel revenues come first from the sale of crude oil (46 billion), followed by pipeline gas, oil products, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal.&nbsp;

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Russia's exports plunged in May as countries and companies moved away from purchase. However, global rise in fossil fuel prices benefitted Russia.

The report added that some countries like China, India, the UAE and France had upped their purchases from Russia.

The nickel plant releases over two million tonnes of toxic gases. This results in acid rains and polluted water bodies. This has an immensely adverse impact on the lives of residents. This Russian city is called world's 'most depressing city'

Staff reviewers of US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Sunday that Pfizer-BioNTech's COVID vaccines were safe and effective for children from ages 6 months to 4 years. &nbsp;

The FDA reviewers said in briefing documents published on Sunday evening that their evaluation did not reveal any new safety concerns related to the use of the vaccine in young children.

The FDA analysis of data from Pfizer's trial was published ahead of a June 15 meeting of its outside advisers. Recommendations from these external advisers will determine the FDA's decision on the vaccines.

"Available data support the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine 3-dose primary series in preventing COVID-19 in the age group of 6 months through 4 years," FDA staff said in the review.

An early analysis of data from Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine based on 10 symptomatic COVID-19 cases identified when the Omicron coronavirus variant was dominant suggested a vaccine efficacy of 80.3% in the under-5 age group.

COVID vaccines for children under the age of 6 are not yet approved in most countries. Due to low demand for vaccines in for kids aged 5 to 11, it is also not known how many parents would get their young ones vaccinated.

The bar, where patrons check aisles to grab anything from local heavy spirits to Belgian beer, is known among Beijing revellers for its tables plastered with empty bottles, and customers falling asleep on sofas after midnight.

Authorities have described the outbreak as "ferocious" and "explosive" as nearly 200 Covid cases have been linked to the bar. Those infected live or work in 14 out of 16 of Beijing's districts.

There has been no official word on the exact cause of the outbreak.

The bar cluster was caused by loopholes and complacency in epidemic prevention, state-backed Beijing Evening News wrote in a commentary piece on Monday.

"At a time when ... normality in the city is being restored, the fall of Heaven Supermarket Bar means the hardship and effort of countless people have been in vain," the newspaper wrote.

If the outbreak grows, "consequences could be serious, and would be such that nobody would want to see," it added.
