The heart of Portuguese monarch who declared Brazil's independence from Portugal has been brought from Portugal and will be on display during &nbsp;celebrations of independence anniversary.

The heart of Dom Pedro the First has been kept in formaldehyde in Porto, a Portuguese city. The heart has been kept there since 1834 when the monarch died at the age of 35.

The Portuguese government agreed to loan the heart to Brazil for three weeks for the bicentennial celebration. The Brazilian air force flew it to Brasilia, where it was received on Monday by the country's defense minister.

The relic will be received by Brazil's far-right President Jair Bolsonaro at the presidential palace. The monarch's heart will be received with military honours and a gun salute. It will then be put on public display at the foreign ministry. Brazil's independence day is on September 7.

Brazillian nationalists acclaim Pedro's declaration of independence as the birth of the country. It was an act of defiance against his father, Portuguese King Joao VI.&nbsp;

The Portuguese king's family was escorted to safety in Brazil by the British Navy in 1807 before Napoleon's forces invaded Portugal. On returning to Lisbon in 1821, he left his son Pedro as prince regent of Brazil.

Pedro's heart was separated in 1834 and kept in a church in Porto according to this last wishes. His remains were donated to Brazil in 1972 for the 150th commemoration of Brazilian independence and are kept in a museum in Sao Paulo.

There may not have been a movie on this but rats that are being studied in University of Richmond in the US can drive around in cars, quite literally!

Well, to be fair, these are not exactly Porsche they are driving. The 'cars' they are driving are made of empty plastic boxes. But rats acquiring skill to drive a vehicle, however small, is an achievement in itself.&nbsp;

Kelly Lambert at the University of Richmond make these tiny cars. The cars are made of transparent plastic boxes and have aluminium floors. There are three copper bars inside the car that the rats can touch. Whenever the rat touches a bar, it completes a circuit and the car moves. The bar on the left moves the car to left. The bar on the right moves the car to the right.

Lambert and her colleagues selected six female and four male rats and trained them to drive these cars. This was achieved by offering food as a reward.&nbsp;

The cars were driven in four square metre arena that was constructed for the experiment.&nbsp;

Initially the rats were awarded food when they touched the copper bars. But the reward threshold was soon raised. The food was placed in different parts of the arena. The rats soon adapted to the new challenge and began driving the car in order to get the food. They even devised out paths that were not directly taught to them.

The experiment is likely to help scientists to help researchers to understand cognition further.

Rats drive cars to grab food in this university

As per World Health Organisation (WHO), clinical depression affects 280 million people worldwide every year. A new, study-of-studies by researchers from University of Eastern Finland has revealed a link between depression and Vitamin D.

This study was a meta-analysis of 41 previous studies. A meta-analysis is an analysis that combines results from a number of previous studies and draws conclusion after analysing the data usind statistical methods.

In this meta-analysis, results obtained from 53,235 participants were covered. These participants included those with depression as well as those without.&nbsp;

"These findings will encourage new, high-level clinical trials in patients with depression in order to shed more light on the possible role of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of depression," says Tuomas Mikola, doctoral researcher and lead author at the University of Eastern Finland

The typical Vitamin D intake in the participants was 50-100 micrograms a day. Some of the participants were even being given placebo drugs. It was found that in participants with depression, administering Vitamin D was more useful than placebo drugs.

"Our results suggest that vitamin D supplementation has beneficial effects in both individuals with major depressive disorder as well as in those with milder, clinically significant depressive symptoms," researchers have written in the paper they have published.

Climate change and global warming are indeed detrimental to the well-being of our planet but just how dangerous can it be for the life has been thrown light upon by a scientific study. Researchers from Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Nova Scotia have concluded that if emission of greenhouse gases continue with 'business as usual' approach, nearly all marine species would face risk of extinction by the end of 21st century.&nbsp;

For this study, the researchers studied threat faced by nearly 25,000 marine species. They found that almost 90 per cent of these species will be at risk of extinction by the end of this century. The species that the researchers studied included plants, animals, bacteria, protozoans and chromists.

Daniel Boyce, an ecologist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, and author of the study said that the findings are "quite startling and very sobering". He was quoted by ABC News.

"I'd like to think that that's an implausible scenario," Boyce said. "But nonetheless, it is the worst-case scenario. And when we evaluated that scenario, we found that there was a very grim picture for the climate risk for marine species."

Such a large percentage of marine life facing extinction may create huge problems for the global ecosystem.&nbsp;

It is well known that food chains and food webs are interconnected across the biosphere on Earth. A tectonic shift, such as predicted by the study may surely spell trouble for all life on the planet.

Humans are terrestrial and by extension, have limits of how fast they can swim in water. So what do we do if we want to feel the smoothness with whicgh marine animals swim? Put a camera or something on them probably. But this was not the sole purpose when US Navy put cameras on some of dolphins and let them swim in open ocean. The intent was to observe their feeding habits.

For this study, six bottlenose dolphins were selected from US National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF). Cameras were strapped on these dolphins and they were observed for six months. The dolphins were given free reign to hunt in San Diego Bay.

The footage revealed some exciting things. The dolphins were giving long chase to hunt their prey and were even targetting venomous snakes.

These dolphins from NMMF were indeed dolphins in captivity but they were used to hunting in the open sea. It was hence considered that their hunting instincts were similar to their wild counterparts in open ocean.

The findings have been published by the researchers in journal PLOS One.

"As dolphins hunted, they clicked almost constantly at intervals of 20 to 50 milliseconds," write the researchers.

"On approaching prey, click intervals shorten into a terminal buzz and then a squeal. On contact with fish, buzzing and squealing was almost constant until after the fish was swallowed."

"These dolphins appeared to use both sight and sound to find prey," researchers say further.&nbsp;

"At distance, the dolphins always used echolocation to find fish. Up close, vision and echolocation appeared to be used together."

It was hence considered that their hunting instincts were similar to their wild counterparts in open ocean. The findings have been published by the researchers in journal PLOS One. "As dolphins hunted, they clicked almost constantly at intervals of 20 to 50 milliseconds," write the researchers. "On approaching prey, click intervals shorten into a terminal buzz and then a squeal. On contact with fish, buzzing and squealing was almost constant until after the fish was swallowed." "These dolphins appeared to use both sight and sound to find prey," researchers say further. "At distance, the dolphins always used echolocation to find fish. The section prescribed punishment of up to two years in jail.

Gay rights campaigners have long said section 377A runs counter to the affluent city-state's vibrant culture and have unsuccessfully challenged the law in court.&nbsp;

Roy Tan, one of several people who had unsuccessfully challenged the law in court, said repealing 377A would make him "feel more like I belonged in Singapore, now that the state no longer regards me as a criminal".&nbsp;

"Removing the stigma wrought by Section 377A would make it easier for more closeted gay men to come out and embrace their sexuality instead of hiding their identities in shame, together with all the psychological damage that it causes," he told AFP.

"Too many elderly LGBT people are living their lives alone and it would be a tragedy if most died solitary and uncared for."

In spite of the repeal, Singapore PM's announcement on Sunday also created obstacles on the path to full marriage equality. As of now, people can still challenge the constitutionality of the definition of marriage, but Lee said doing so would risk the court stepping into policy-making.&nbsp;

"Judges interpret and apply the law... They have neither the expertise nor the mandate to settle political questions, nor rule on social norms and values," Lee said.

He said that in order to prevent this, the government would amen constitution to &nbsp;"safeguard the institution of marriage". The definition of institution of marriage will be that between a man and a woman.

The LGBTQ community -- in a statement signed by more than 20 groups -- said they opposed to any further laws and constitutional changes to protect the traditional definition of marriage as doing so would promote unequal treatment.

"We urge the government not to heed recent calls from religious conservatives to enshrine the definition of marriage into the constitution," they said in the statement issued late Sunday.

"Such a decision will undermine the secular character of our constitution, codify further discrimination into supreme law, and tie the hands of future parliaments."

Relative of children found dead in New Zealand found in South Korea 

At least 16 people were killed with another three injured in an accident in Russia that involved a collision between a lorry and a stationary minibus. The accident took place in Russia's Ulyanovsk region on Sunday (August 21).

"According to preliminary data, the driver of a heavy goods vehicle did not slow down in good time and hit a stationary minibus," the Ulyanovsk region's interior ministry said in a statement. The ministry was quoted by Reuters.

AFP quoted reports by news agencies to say that the bus was travelling in the opposite direction near the village of Nikolayevka.

At the time of the accident, the minibus was also hit from behind by another truck. According to footage broadcast by Russian television channel Ren TV, the minibus was almost completely flattened by the two trucks.&nbsp;

Mobarakeh Steel Company is located in central Isfahan province of Iran. The company plays a major role in Iran's economy. It even owns a local football team Sepahan. The company, along with several of its subsidiaries are subject to sanctions imposed by the US.

The decision to suspend stock trading of the company came after a 295-page parliamentary report was released, the report has alleged widespread corruption among senior management of the company.

The report accuses the company of 90 counts of wrongdoings including fraud and influence-peddling, amounting to a total of around $3 billion, Fars said.

According to the parliamentary report, which was published by several local media outlets, the firm paid huge sums of money to officials at government institutions and other influential bodies.

They included figures at the intelligence and industry ministries and provincial governors' offices, as well as the judiciary, the police, state broadcaster IRIB, members of parliament and clerics.

As Ukraine prepared to mark its Independence Day embroiled in a war that has flattened towns and cities, killed thousands and forced millions to flee, military and regional officials reported more Russian strikes on targets in the east and south of the country.

Of particular concern was the shelling of Nikopol, a city which lies across the Dnipro river from Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's and Europe's biggest nuclear plant. It has been held by Russian forces since March.
