EXPLAINED: What is Kavach? India’s indigenous automatic train protection system

<p>In an unfortunate turn of events on Friday evening, the Coromandel Express derailed close to Bahanaga Station in Balasore city in the Indian state of Odisha in which around 207 people reportedly died while over 900 passengers sustained injuries, reported PTI news agency. As per local media reports, the cause of the accident was the collision of the express train with a goods train. A search and rescue operation is currently underway.</p>

<h2><strong>PM Modi expresses grief&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Following the tragic incident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed&nbsp;grief and empathised with the&nbsp;bereaved families. "Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to Railway Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected," PM Modi tweeted Friday evening.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) consisting of 22 members arrived from Balasore Railway Station (BLS). Earlier, a team from Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) of 32 members initiated their operations about 30 minutes before, as per ANI citing officials.</p>

<p>As per the latest developments in the train derailment accident, an additional rescue team of 26 members of the Odisha Fire and Emergency Service was also deployed. The deployed team is equipped with advance rescue equipment of Odisha Fire and Disaster Response Academy Bhubaneswar. The team rushed to the the train accident site for rescue, as per ANI citing Odisha government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"An unfortunate accident took place between Coromandel Express, a goods train and another passenger train near Bahanaga Railway Station in Balasore district. Three NDRF teams have been dispersed and the rescue operation has started," Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"NDRF and SDRF teams are on the spot. 600-700 rescue force personnel working. rescue operation to go throughout the night. All hospitals are providing support. our immediate concern is to rescue victims. Concerned officials rushed to the spot," the chief secretary added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian President Droupadi Murmu also prayed for the quick recovery of the injured in the Odisha train accident. "Deeply anguished by loss of lives in unfortunate rail accident in Odisha, my heart goes out to bereaved families," President Murmu tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

Spain's Catholic church probe reveals 728 priests abused children over eight decades

<p>In response to Russia's "violations" of the New START nukes deal, the US on Thursday took several countermeasures which included withholding updates on the "status or location of treaty-accountable items such as missiles and launchers," as per a US State Department press release Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

US and Russia have been under a constant state of friction ever since the war broke out in Ukraine leading both nations to take measures and countermeasures targeting each other.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the Thursday statement, the United States said that the nation will continue to provide Russia with notifications of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) launches in accordance with the 1988 Ballistic Missile Launch Notifications Agreement. But Washington will not be providing telemetric information on these launches.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Halting inspection activities</strong></h2>

<p>Another countermeasure was US refraining from facilitating New START Treaty inspection activities on its soil. It has done so by revoking existing visas issued to Russian New START Treaty inspectors and aircrew members.</p>

<p>To put a stop to any such inspection activities in the future also, Washington is also denying pending applications for such visas and is revoking the standing diplomatic clearance numbers issued for Russian New START Treaty inspection airplanes.</p>

<p>"Russia chose not to exercise its right to conduct inspection activities and has also denied the United States its right under the treaty to conduct inspection activities since August 2022, when it refused to accept a U.S. inspection," the statement read.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is New START nukes treaty?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The treaty was signed in 2010 and was due to expire in 2026. Under the New START treaty's "Biannual Data Exchanges," the two nations are required to provide a declaration of deployed strategic delivery vehicles, launchers and warheads. The number is capped at no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads and 700 land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them.</p>

<h2><strong>Nepalese leaders protest over controversial mural</strong></h2>

<p>With the holy site of Lumbini being one of the crucial cultural centres in Nepal, the leaders of the nation are now protesting for the removal of the mural from the new Parliament building.&nbsp;Nepal's former PM KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday urged PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal also known as “Prachanda” to discuss this with the Indian officials and urge them to get the mural removed from the new Parliament building.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“If a country like India that sees itself as an ancient and strong country and as a model of democracy puts Nepali territories in its map and hangs the map in Parliament, it cannot be called fair,” he added in a statement at his party’s headquarters.</p>

<h2><strong>Kalapani dispute&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>India and Nepal have been at a diplomatic standstill on the issue of Kalapani. Both countries lay claim to the territory which is located in the easternmost corner of Pithoragarh district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.</p>

<p>In November 2019, India published a revised political map that showed Kalapani as part of the Pithoragarh district. Agitated by this, the Nepali leaders registered their protest and brought that up with the Indian officials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The gratuitous assertion of 'Akhand Bharat' is a manifestation of a revisionist and expansionist mindset," a statement by the ministry said.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>India-Nepal bilateral ties&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The protest by the Nepali leaders comes at a time when Prachanda is visiting India are taking place at a time when Kathmandu and New Delhi are looking forward to bolstering diplomatic ties by resolving the remaining border issues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nepali PM who is in India for a four-day visit held a bilateral meeting with PM Modi where the latter said the nations will continue to work to take the bilateral relations to the height of the Himalaya and will resolve all the issues, be it the boundary issue or any other issue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I am happy to share that the partnership between India and Nepal has been a super hit,” PM Modi said.&nbsp;</p>
