Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (July 27) told African leaders that he would gift them tens of thousands of tonnes of grain within months despite sanctions imposed by Western countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (July 27) told African leaders that he would gift them tens of thousands of tonnes of grain within months despite sanctions imposed by Western countries. Addressing a summit in St. Petersburg devoted to Russian-African ties, President Putin said Russia was expecting a record grain harvest and was ready to replace Ukrainian grain exports to Africa on both commercial and aid basis to honour what he said was Russia's role in global food security. "We will be ready to provide Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Mali, Somalia, Central African Republic and Eritrea with 25-50,000 tonnes of free grain each in the next 3-4 months," Putin said, adding, Moscow would also provide free delivery of these products to consumers. Poorest nations 'screwed over' by West: Putin During the summit, Putin said that more than 70 per cent of Ukrainian grain exported had gone to high or above-average-income countries, including the European Union (EU), and the poorest countries were "screwed over" and received less than 3% of the shipments. The Russian president added that Western sanctions even prevented his administration from supplying free fertiliser to poor countries. "A paradoxical picture is emerging. On the one hand, Western countries are obstructing supplies of our grain and fertilisers, while on the other they hypocritically blame us for the current crisis situation on the world food market," Putin further said. AU appeals for peaceful co-existence between Russia and Ukraine African Union (AU) chairperson Azali Assoumani, who was present during the summit with Putin, appealed for peaceful co-existence between Russia and Ukraine (who are currently at war), by saying this would save the lives of those who depended on their food exports. "I have no choice but to notice today that with the Russia-Ukraine crisis the future of this partnership will be under threat should the crisis persist. Therefore, we need to find a resolution to the crisis in order to try to save the thousands of people who depend on these imports," Assoumani said. "Africa's economic food security will be particularly endangered since the continent is badly affected by the shock of food price increases provoked by the interruption to supplies. We appeal therefore to the stakeholders to find a middle ground to ensure the safe delivery of cereals and fertilisers from Ukraine and Russia towards our continent," he added. The Allahabad High Court on Thursday (July 27) stayed the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises till August 3. The Allahabad High Court on Thursday (July 27) stayed the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises till August 3. A report by Live Law said that on August 3, the high court would pronounce its order on the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee's challenge to the Varanasi district judge's July 21 order for ASI survey of the mosque. The bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker passed this order after hearing both parties. On Wednesday, the Anjum committee argued before the high court that the ASI was never a part of the suit. Despite this, the Varanasi district judge directed the ASI to survey mosque premises. The committed also contended that once the scientific survey was done, the mosque premises would be destroyed, the Live Law report added. Anjum committee's lawyer reiterates apprehension over structure being damaged During Thursday's hearing, the senior counsel appearing for the Anjum committee reiterated his apprehension that the mosque premises could be damaged during survey. He apprised the Allahabad High Court bench of the presence of ASI officials at the disputed site with spades. The lawyer highlighted that no issues were framed in the court and yet a survey was ordered in the case. The lawyer further argued the court could be used to collect evidence on behalf of a litigant who has no evidence, and since the plaintiffs admitted they had no evidence and now they were seeking evidence through the court by seeking direction from a third party. Responding to the lawyer's concerns, Chief Justice Pritinker asked if the spades available at the spot were used. The lawyer then said they were not used as a stay order of the court was in operation. Pritinker added the apprehension of the Anjuman Committee could not come in the way of the plaintiffs. However, the bench asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take note of the apprehensions (of the committee). At the centre of this whole case is the contention by a group of Hindu petitioners that there is 'Shivling' in the mosque complex that it wants to worship. The Muslim representatives, however, argued that it was a fountain. During Thursday's hearing, the chief justice also expressed concerns about the delay in the disposal of the suit file by four Hindu worshippers last year seeking year-round worshipping rights inside the mosque. A former US Marine, who was once jailed in Russia, has been injured fighting for Ukraine, the US State Department said on Tuesday (July 25). The former Marine, Trevor Reed was released by Russia in a prison swap in April 2022 and was sent to Germany for treatment when he was injured fighting for Ukraine, State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel said.

Patel added that Reed was transported to Germany with the help of a private, non-governmental organisation and was receiving medical care. The nature of the injuries is not yet known. Speaking to the news agency Associated Press, two US officials said that the former Marine was taken to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a level II trauma care centre located near Ramstein Air Base. 'Reed travelled to Ukraine to fight on his own' On Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Patel also said that Trevor Reed was not engaged in any activities on behalf of the US government and had travelled to Ukraine to fight on his own. “As I indicated, we have been incredibly clear warning American citizens, American nationals, not to travel to Ukraine, let alone participate in fighting,” Patel said. “As you know, we are not in a place to provide assistance to evacuate private US citizens from Ukraine, including those Americans who may decide to travel to Ukraine to participate in fighting,” he added. The 2019 arrest Reed, a Texas University graduate, was arrested in 2019 for assault on law enforcement officers after getting drunk and was sentenced to nine years in prison. However, in April 2022, Russia released him after the US negotiated an exchange for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot and alleged drug smuggler who was sentenced to 20 years in prison by an American court. While in custody, the former Marine said that he was coughing up blood and had also staged a hunger strike to protest the conditions under which he was held. On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he did not expect Reed's case to have an impact on US efforts to bring home two Americans held in Russia - journalist Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan. "My expectation is that even as we are dealing with all sorts of other challenges in our relationship with Russia, we will and we are determined to continue to work to bring both Evan and Paul home," Blinken said. UAP is a new term that encompasses not just Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) in the air, but also any craft or phenomena that is seen in space or unwanted which cannot be identified. The report said that the hearing would be held by the House's Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs. It will take place at 10 am EDT (7:30 pm IST). The testimony The report said that Wednesday's hearing would include testimony from two former US Navy aviators - Ryan Graves and David Fravor - who are witnesses to separate highly publicised encounters with what appeared to be unconventional aircraft operating in American military airspace. Graves, who has been vocal about the UAP issue, previously called these phenomena an urgent and critical national security issue that deserved better scientific scrutiny. The hearing would also call David Grusch as a witness. Grusch, a decorated former combat officer and veteran of the Pentagon's intelligence community, claimed to have received extensive classified information about deeply covert programmes that he said possessed intact and partially intact craft of non-human origin. The report said that while his statements have been controversial, they have garnered attention from politicians and the media. Previously, some members of Congress suggested that there was indeed UFO/UAP knowledge that had been hidden from the public. Wednesday's hearing comes nearly a year after the US Department of Defense formed the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which collects and analyses data available to the US military and intelligence about UFOs. During a hearing in April, AARO's director said that the office found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off-world technology or objects that defy the known laws of physics. This remark would now stand in contrast to the claims of the witnesses who will testify during the hearing. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 26) rejected former prime minister Imran Khan's plea seeking a stay on trial court proceedings in the Toshakhana case. Khan, the chairperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, had approached the Supreme Court after being denied relief from the Islamabad High Court. According to a report by Geo News, during Wednesday's hearing, Justice Yahya Afridi of the two-member SC bench said that the apex court will not interfere in the trial court's matters in the case.

Khan's lawyer Khawaja Haris told the SC that there were multiple petitions related to the jurisdiction of the trial court and the transfer of the case pending in the high court. To this, Justice Afridi directed the Islamabad High Court to hear Khan's pending petitions together. He pointed out that it was not the apex court's jurisdiction to hear the petition when there are related petitions sub-judice in the high court.

In October last year, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disqualified Khan in the Toshakhana reference under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution for making false statements and incorrect declarations.

In May this year, Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Hamayun Dilawar rejected the former prime minister's challenge to the maintainability of the Toshakhana reference and indicted him in the case. The trial court's decision was challenged in the Islamabad High Court.

On July 4, the high court remanded the case back to the trial court to re-examine the matter in seven days. Subsequently, Khan moved the Supreme Court and urged it to set aside the High Court's directive. The former PM sought a stay on the proceedings before ADSJ Dilawar until his appeal was decided.

There are currently four petitions pending in the high court. The first is related to the latest order. In two pleas, Khan has challenged the jurisdiction of the trial court to hear the case. In the fourth petition, he sought a transfer of the case.

Toshakhana case: Pak SC rejects Imran Khan's plea seeking stay on trial court proceedings

A Belgian court on Tuesday (July 25) convicted six men of murder and two others of terrorism charges for the 2016 bombings in Brussels that killed 35 people, and injured hundreds.

A Belgian court on Tuesday (July 25) convicted six men of murder and two others of terrorism charges for the 2016 bombings in Brussels that killed 35 people, and injured hundreds. The trial revived painful memories for the nearly 1,000 registered to attend. They included those who lost loved ones or were injured and witnesses to the bombings. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the court found that the six men, of the 10 facing charges, were guilty of murder and attempted murder in a terrorist context for their part in the twin bombings at Brussels airport and the third bomb on the city's metro on March 22, 2016. These six men were also convicted of participating in the activities of a terrorist group. Two men were acquitted of murder but were found guilty of participating in the activities of a terrorist group and two others were acquitted of the charges they faced. What happened on that day? On the morning of March 22, 2016, two men blew themselves up at the Brussels-Zaventem International Airport. An hour later, a third explosion was reported in a metro train near the seat of the European Union (EU). The bombings, which took place near the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the EU, were part of a series of attacks claimed by the Islamic State group in Europe. On Tuesday, the court increased the death toll from the bombings from 32 to 35 after it found a link between the trauma suffered and the deaths of three more people subsequently. According to a report by the news agency AFP, one of the persons in the latest death toll was a 23-year-old woman who was at the airport at the time of the explosion. The woman decided to end her life through euthanasia due to the mental suffering inflicted. Who was convicted? Among those convicted in the twin bombings was French citizen Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in the trial over the 2015 Paris attacks that killed 130 people. Others found guilty included Mohamed Abrini and Osama Krayem. Abrini, a man of Belgian-Moroccan descent, went to the Brussels-Zaventem International Airport with the two suicide bombers but fled without detonating his suitcase of explosives. Meanwhile, Krayem, who is from Sweden, was accused of planning to be a second bomber on the Brussels metro. Krayem was found guilty of murder along with defendants Ali El Haddad Asufi and Bilal El Makhoukhi. Osama Atar, who is believed to have been killed in an air strike in Syria, was convicted in absentia of masterminding the attacks. Two other defendants -- Tunisian Sofien Ayari and Rwandan Herve Bayingana Muhirwa -- were acquitted of murder but found guilty of participating in a terrorist group. Brothers Smail and Ibrahim Farisi were acquitted of the charges they faced. Trial held under tight security Tuesday's trial was held under tight security at the converted former headquarters of NATO. The trial started at the end of 2022 and dozens of wounded survivors and bereaved relatives often gave emotional testimony during the hearings. Presiding Judge Laurence Massart rattled through the list of nearly 300 separate charges in minutes on Tuesday evening and then spent five hours outlining the jury's reasoning. The jury members sat facing the accused, seven of them seated behind glass screens and guarded by police officers in balaclavas. Verdict 'will help turn a page': Victims Pierre Bastin, whose daughter was killed in the metro blast, said he hoped the trial would "help to turn the page". "Yes it (the verdict) will help turn a page, of course. It's a process which has to happen, yes," Bastin added. Pierre Yves Desaive, who was a survivor of the airport bombing, thanked the jurors for the verdict. "You need to remember that the jurors have really been with us throughout. They have all my gratitude because, of course, they did their duty as citizens, but I think no citizen is prepared to cope with that and I'm not just talking about being cut off from one's family and work life for seven months," Desaive said. "I think what they've seen and what they've heard will affect them terribly and if I can pass on a message, I know they are allowed psychological support but they have done their duty to society and now it's up to society to help them," Desaive added. What happens next? The murder convictions leave those found guilty facing a life sentence in Belgium. Sentencing is expected after the summer recess ends in September. Vincent Lurquin, who is the lawyer for Bayingana Muhirwa, one of the two acquitted of murder in the case, reacted to the verdict by saying, "I think it's a judgement that will be remembered, an important judgement. And also the jurors have worked very well, have worked very hard, and that proves that a criminal court is one of the best responses to terrorism." As the ethnic violence in Manipur rages on, 718 Myanmar nationals entered the northeast Indian state's Chandel district last Saturday and Sunday (July 22 and 23) due to the ongoing clashes between the Army and the civil defence forces in the country.

As the ethnic violence in Manipur rages on, 718 Myanmar nationals entered the northeast Indian state's Chandel district last Saturday and Sunday (July 22 and 23) due to the ongoing clashes between the Army and the civil defence forces in the country. According to an official statement on Monday (July 24), Manipur's Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi asked the Assam Rifles to push back these Myanmar nationals, adding the state government sought a detailed report from the Assam Rifles to clarify the facts and reasons, as to why and how these people were allowed to enter Chandel without proper travel documents. Manipur nationals staying in seven locations of Chandel “The state government has strictly advised the Assam Rifles to push back those 718 illegal Myanmar nationals immediately,” Joshi said. He pointed out that the Myanmar nationals were now staying in seven locations of the district -- Lajang, Bonse, New Samtal, New Lajang, Yangnomphai, Yangnomphai Saw Mill, and Aivomjang. “The state government views the fresh illegal entry of 718 refugees very seriously with utmost sensitivity as the same may have international ramifications more particularly in view of the ongoing law and order issues.” The chief secretary ordered the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Chandel district to deal with the situation effectively and also keep biometrics and photographs of all such people. Ready for discussion on Manipur violence: Home Minister Shah This influx from Myanmar comes as the Narendra Modi-led government of India is facing criticism over a viral video showing two women paraded naked in Manipur. As per the police, the women were dragged onto the streets and were sexually assaulted amid the continuing violence. Mass protests have been held across India over the incident. The sexual assault took place more than two months ago, but it captured national attention after a video went viral on social media last week. Six people have been arrested in this case. On Monday, India's Home Minister Amit Shah said that he was ready for a discussion on the ongoing clashes in the state after the ongoing Parliament session was rocked by uproars from leaders of several opposition parties demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the issue. "I don't know why the opposition does not want to allow a discussion. I request the leader of opposition parties that let the discussion happen and it is very important that the entire nation witnesses the truth," Home Minister Shah said. Doctors in Israel staged a massive protest on Tuesday (July 25) against the passing of a key clause of the judicial overhaul. According to a report by The Guardian, the Israeli Medical Association (IMA) said is holding a 24-hour protest, with exemptions for medical care in Jerusalem and emergency care across the country.

As per the Intern Doctors Organization, the doctors are set to be joined in strike action on Tuesday by 73% of interns. Israel's Health Minister Moshe Arbel is reportedly seeking an injunction to prevent the doctors’ strike from going ahead. Last week, the IMA held a brief strike as a warning, arguing the judicial overhaul would “devastate the healthcare system.” The report further said that legal action, a general strike, and possible refusal from upwards of 10,000 military reservists to report for duty are on the cards as Israeli democracy enters a new chapter. Protests rage on as Israel ratifies key bill of judicial overhaul On Monday, Israel's parliament ratified the first bill of a judicial overhaul sought by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The bill, which limits the Supreme Court's powers to void some government decisions if it deemed them "unreasonable", was passed by a 64-to-0 vote after opposition lawmakers abandoned the session in protest. Also read | Israel PM defends 'necessary' judicial reform vote amid escalating protests The amendment is part of broader judicial changes the government announced earlier this year, which it said were needed to push back against what it describes as an overreach by a Supreme Court that it said had become too politically interventionist. However, critics have said that the changes would open the door to abuses of power by removing effective checks on the executive's authority. The protests against the judicial overhaul have raged with police using water cannons to disperse the demonstrators. On Monday, at least 19 protesters were arrested. Will seek dialogue with opposition: PM Netanyahu Addressing the country, Prime Minister Netanyahu said he would seek dialogue with the opposition to reach an all-inclusive agreement (on the judicial changes) by the end of November. "We all agree that Israel must remain a strong democracy, that it must continue protecting individual rights for everyone, that it will not become a state of (Jewish law), that the courts will remain independent," Netanyahu said.
