Taiwan's defence ministry said on Sunday (August 20) that in the last 24 hours, 25 Chinese air force planes crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line, which previously served as an unofficial barrier between the two sides.

Taiwan's defence ministry said on Sunday (August 20) that in the last 24 hours, 25 Chinese air force planes crossed the Taiwan Strait's median line, which previously served as an unofficial barrier between the two sides. As per a map published by the ministry, the planes included Su-30 and J-11 fighter jets, though there was no immediate sign that China was continuing its exercises on Sunday. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Taiwanese officials said China was likely to conduct military exercises near the island. On Saturday, China held military drills in Taiwan as an angry response to Vice President William Lai's recent trip to the United States. According to a report by the Xinhua news agency, the drills were meant to test the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) ability "to seize control of air and sea spaces" and fight "in real combat conditions." Condemning the drills, Taiwan said it would dispatch "appropriate forces" to respond "with practical actions". It's not up to China to decide who wins Taiwan poll: Lai Taiwanese Vice President Lai said the island's next year election was a choice between democracy and autocracy, adding it was not up to China to decide who wins the election. In an interview broadcast late Saturday with a Taiwanese television station, but conducted while he was in the US, Lai said, "It's not who China likes today, and then they can assume the post. This goes against the spirit of Taiwan's democracy, and represents huge damage to Taiwan's democratic system." Lai added that there was no cause for China to make a fuss over nothing when it came to overseas travel by Taiwanese leaders. "My position is that Taiwan is not a part of the People's Republic of China. We are willing to link up with the international community and talk to China under the guarantee of security," he further said. US urges China to stop putting pressure on Taiwan Meanwhile, the US on Saturday urged China to stop pressuring Taiwan and engage in meaningful dialogue with the island. "We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan," a US State Department spokesperson told Reuters. The US would continue to monitor the exercises closely, the spokesperson added. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Niger coup leader General Abdourahamane Tiani said on Saturday (August 19) evening that neither the junta nor the citizens wanted war, and remained open to dialogue. In a televised address, General Tiani said, "I hereby reaffirm that our ambition is not to seize power. I also reaffirm our readiness to engage in any dialogue, as long as it takes into account the orientations desired by the proud and resilient people of Niger." "In short, neither the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland nor the people of Niger want war and remain open to dialogue. But let there be no misunderstanding: should aggression be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park that some believe it to be. Indeed, they will find us facing 26 million Nigeriens," Tiani added. Those imposing sanctions want to isolate Niger when...: Tiani Coup leader Tiani also said that those who imposed sanctions and threatened to kill thousands of citizens hoped to divide them and impose their will against the people. "They think they can force us to accept by force what is profoundly unacceptable because it is contrary to our vital interests and cardinal values. They want to isolate our country at a time when our people most need community solidarity to better face terrorism and insecurity," he added. American prosecutors on Thursday (August 17) asked a federal judge to sentence former Proud Boys chairperson Henry “Enrique” Tarrio and leader Joe Biggs to 33 years in prison and other top members of the extremist group to 20-30 years in jail after four of them were convicted of seditious conspiracy in the Capitol Hill riot 2021.

According to a report by The Washington Post on Friday, the request was the longest punishment sought by the government in the Capitol siege so far. Assistant Attorneys Jason McCullough and Conor Mulroe said, “The scope of the defendants’ conspiracy is vast. The defendants organized and directed a force of nearly 200 to attack the heart of our democracy.” McCullough and Mulroe added the Proud Boys members intentionally positioned themselves at the vanguard of political violence in the US. The prosecutors urged US District Judge Timothy J. Kelly to hand down stiff sentences to deter others who would mobilise such violence in the future. Proud Boys members guilty of plotting to unleash political violence In May this year, Tarrio, Biggs, Ethan Nordean, and Zachary Rehl were found guilty of plotting to unleash political violence to prevent Congress’s certification of legitimate electoral results. The report said that Dominic Pezzola, a fifth co-defendant, was acquitted of seditious conspiracy, but found guilty like the others of obstructing Congress’s joint session. All these were convicted offences punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and prosecutors asked the court to stack sentences to exceed this total for Tarrio and his deputies. Meanwhile, Tarrio's defence asked for a sentence without the terrorism enhancement (or less than 14 years). The defence said the government seemed to want to punish the former Proud Boys chairperson for going to trial while not seeking the enhancement against violent rioters who pleaded guilty. The defence also said that there was no evidence that Tarrio ordered anyone to enter the Capitol or commit violence. “Tarrio was not even present at the scene in Washington DC; he did not direct his fellow members of Proud Boys or anyone else to assault people on the day in question or to destroy any government property,” attorney Nayib Hassan said. Hassan asked the court to weigh Tarrio’s community and charity work and earlier cooperation with law enforcement. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the US health authorities said on Friday (August 18) that there were closely monitoring a new variant of Covid. The WHO has classified the new variant BA.2.86 as the one under surveillance because of the large number of spike gene mutations it carries. Till now, the variant has been detected in the US, Israel, Denmark, and the United Kingdom (UK). Sharing a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed it was monitoring the variant. Only 4 known sequences of the variant: WHO According to WHO, there are only four known sequences of the BA.2.86, and the United Nations health agency pointed out that the potential impact of the variant's mutations is presently unknown and undergoing careful assessment. The WHO is monitoring upwards of 10 variants and their descent lineages. On Thursday, the WHO said that only a few sequences of the variant have been reported from a handful of countries. UK detects first case of the variant On Friday, the UK detected the first case of BA.2.86 in a person with no recent travel history. In a statement, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said, "There is currently one confirmed case in the UK in an individual with no recent travel history, which suggests a degree of community transmission within the UK." "The newly identified variant has a high number of mutations and is genomically distant from both its likely ancestor, BA.2, and from currently circulating XBB-derived variants," the statement added. The UKHSA designated the variant as V-23AUG-01 for monitoring. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

The report said the drills were meant to test the PLA's ability "to seize control of air and sea spaces" and fight "in real combat conditions". The scale of these drills is not yet known. The drills were also intended to serve as "a stern warning to the collusion of 'Taiwan independence' separatists with foreign elements and their provocations," the report added. Taiwan condemns drills, detects 42 warplane incursions Taiwan condemned Saturday's drills, and said it would dispatch "appropriate forces" to respond "with practical actions". "Conducting a military exercise this time under a pretext not only does not help the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait but also highlights (China's) militaristic mentality and confirms the hegemonic nature of its military expansion," Taiwan's defence ministry said in a statement. Taiwan said that it had detected 42 warplane incursions into its air defence zone since China announced the launch of military drills. It added it has the ability, determination, and confidence to ensure national security. China on Lai's US visit: '...violation of one-China principle' China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, despite the strong objections of the island's government. The latest friction between the two countries comes following Taiwanese President Vice President Lai's US visit. Lai returned from the US on Friday, where he officially made only stopovers on his way to and from Paraguay, though he gave speeches while in America. On Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said, "The United States insisted on arranging for William Lai to stop over twice in the country, which seriously violated the one-China principle and undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and sent out a seriously wrong signal to the Taiwan independence separatist forces. China firmly opposes it and strongly condemns this." "The United States insisted on allowing William to stop over to engage in political activities and propagate the separatist idea of Taiwan independence, thereby enhancing official interactions and substantive relation between the United States and Taiwan, and once again exposing the true nature of the United States in saying one thing and doing another, stubbornly pursuing the strategy of using Taiwan to contain China, and constantly hollowing out the one-China principle," Wenbin added. A UK-born Indian doctor in northern England helped catch nurse Lucy Letby who was on Friday (August 18) convicted of killing seven newborns. According to a report by the news agency PTI late Friday, Letby was a colleague of Dr Ravi Jayaram from the Countess of Chester Hospital in Chester. Speaking to a news channel, Dr Jayaram said some of the seven newborns could have been saved if his concerns about Letby, 33, had been heeded and the police were alerted sooner. "I do genuinely believe that there are four or five babies who could be going to school now who aren't," Jayaram said, adding the consultants first began raising concerns after three babies died in June 2015. As more babies died, senior medics like him held several meetings with hospital executives to raise their concerns about Letby. How Letby was arrested and the trial Eventually, it was in April 2017 that the National Health Service (NHS) trust allowed doctors to meet with a police officer. "The police, after listening to us for less than 10 minutes, realised that this was something that they had to be involved with. I could have punched the air," Jayaram added. An investigation was launched which led to Letby's arrest. She was found guilty of murdering seven newborns along with seven counts of attempted murder relating to six other babies by a jury at Manchester Crown Court. Also read | Explained: British nurse Lucy Letby found guilty of killing 7 newborn babies. What did she do? The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told the court that the 33-year-old nurse used a variety of methods to secretly attack a total of 13 babies in the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. During the trial, which started in October last year, the court heard that doctors at the hospital began to notice a significant rise in the number of babies who were dying or were unexpectedly collapsing. The CPS presented evidence of Letby using various methods to attack babies including force-feeding an overdose of milk or fluids. She intended to kill the babies while deceiving colleagues into believing there was a natural case. "In her hands, innocuous substances like air, milk, fluids – or medication like insulin – would become lethal. She perverted her learning and weaponised her craft to inflict harm, grief and death," Pascale Jones of the CPS said. Other evidence presented to the court included falsified notes made by the nurse to hide her involvement and social media activity to deceive her colleagues. 'I am evil' As the investigation was launched, police found hand-written notes inside Letby's house in which she described herself as a "horrible evil person". "I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to care for them," the note read. The seven victims were five baby boys and two baby girls, and the youngest was just a day old. Letby will be sentenced at the Manchester Crown Court on Monday. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.

Twenty-six million people in the United States have the toxic forever chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Thursday (August 17).

Twenty-six million people in the United States have the toxic forever chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Thursday (August 17). According to a report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the EPA's fifth unregulated contaminant monitoring rule requires water utilities across the US to test drinking water for 29 different PFAS compounds. The initial round of data released by the EPA confirmed the presence of PFAS at 431 water systems at levels above minimum reporting limits. The report said that this is consistent with a 2020 study of the EWG which estimated that over 200 million Americans could have PFAS in their drinking water. Scott Faber, the senior vice president for government affairs at EWG, said that for decades Americans have unknowingly consumed water tainted with PFAS. "The new testing data shows that escaping PFAS is nearly impossible. The EPA has done its job, and the Biden White House must finalize drinking water standards this year." Water systems known to be contaminated in over 2,800 locations A map now showed public and private water systems known to be contaminated with toxic PFAS at more than 2,800 locations in 50 states, the District of Columbia and two territories. The report also said that laboratory tests published by the EWG last month anticipated the worrisome new results from the EPA this week. The group's test found the presence of a variety of PFAS in the drinking water of numerous cities across 18 states, spanning from California to Connecticut. Widespread PFAS pollution The EWG estimated that there could be nearly 30,000 industrial polluters releasing PFAS into the environment, including into sources of drinking water. It said restricting industrial discharges will reduce the amount of PFAS drinking water utilities must treat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has detected PFAS in the blood of 99 per cent of Americans, including newborn babies. Citing studies, the report further said that exposure to very low levels of PFAS can also increase the risk of cancer, harm fetal development and reduce vaccine effectiveness.
