Six inmates were killed on Friday during a disturbance inside a Guayaquil prison, becoming the latest incident of unrest to strike Ecuador's penal system. In a statement, the SNAI national prison authority said that the disturbance occurred in one of the cellblocks of the Guayas 1 prison. Guayas 1 is one of five facilities that make up a large prison complex in Guayaquil. The Ecuadorian prisons agency revealed that six people who died in a prison on Friday were suspected of being involved in the murder of anti-corruption presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Separately, the public prosecutor's office said that its agents, along with police and the military, were "executing security protocols... in light of the disturbance that occurred Friday afternoon." "In the coming hours, specialized military personnel will carry out the first raids and reconnaissance of Pavilion 7, where the incidents originated, to take control of the situation," the office said in a statement posted on X. Earlier in July, a riot in the Guayas 1 prison left over 30 people dead. The ongoing conflict between powerful gangs linked to Colombian and Mexican cartels has led to more than 430 inmate deaths in Ecuador since 2021. In August this year, dozens of guards were taken hostage at several prisons around the country. Amazon on Friday (Oct 6) launched its first pair of prototype satellites for its planned Kuiper internet network. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket emblazoned with the Amazon logo lifted off from Cape Canaveral shortly after 18.00 GMT, carrying the two Kuiper test satellites. This launch is Amazon's first step before it deploys thousands more (satellites) into orbit to beam internet service globally and compete with SpaceX's Starlink. In the next few years, the e-commerce giant looks to deploy 3,236 more satellites and offer broadband internet globally. Reuters reported in the days leading up to the launch, Amazon divulged few specifics about the two satellites. Amazon vows to invest $10 billion in Kuiper project Amazon has vowed to invest $10 billion into its Kuiper project. American regulators require the company to deploy half its planned satellite constellation by 2026. Similar to SpaceX, Amazon aims to target individual consumers and enterprise customers with Kuiper, pulling from its devices playbook to build consumer terminals. The low-earth satellites will travel at an altitude of 590 and 630 kilometers (about 367 and 392 miles) which will provide internet to areas that cable and fiber can’t reach. 'Kuiper 4-5 years behind Starlink' Speaking to Reuters, TMF (Telecom, Media and Finance) Associates President Tim Farrar said, "Starlink has already announced it has about 2 million customers and it's been growing very fast. It's been adding roughly 100,000 customers a month. And last year they had revenues of something like $1.4 billion. So by the time Amazon gets their constellation to service, it's very most likely that StarLink will have five plus million subscribers and perhaps $5 to $8 billion of revenue." "And that's going to be a long road for Amazon to get anywhere close to that. So they are four or five years behind at least," Farrar added. Former United States president Donald Trump got a temporary respite in his ongoing civil fraud case trial as a New York court on Friday (Oct 6) granted a delay in cancelling his licenses to operate his businesses in the state.

Former United States president Donald Trump got a temporary respite in his ongoing civil fraud case trial as a New York court on Friday (Oct 6) granted a delay in cancelling his licenses to operate his businesses in the state. In a ruling from an appeals court, Judge Peter Moulton refused to suspend the trial but ruled that a stay was granted on the "order directing the cancellation of business certificates." Judge Moulton heard arguments by Trump's lawyers and by attorneys for the plaintiff, New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is seeking a $250 million judgment against Trump, accused of fraudulent business filings. Also read: Trump abandons $500 mln lawsuit against former attorney Michael Cohen As per a report by ABC News, Trump's lawyer Christopher Kise argued, "This is everything owned or controlled by the defendant. Once you dissolve, you dissolve." On the other hand, James' lawyer Judy Vale, argued that, "There's just absolutely no basis for an interim stay of trial that's already been going on for a week." The civil fraud case New York Attorney General Letitia James has accused Trump, a 2024 presidential hopeful, of inflating the value of his assets by billions of dollars to secure better loan and insurance terms. James is seeking at least $250 million in fines, a permanent ban against Trump and his adult sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York, and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organization. The case concerns accusations by the attorney general that the former US president inflated his assets and his net worth from 2011 to 2021 to obtain favourable bank loans and lower insurance premiums. The hearing in the case started on Monday after a surprise ruling from Judge Arthur Engoron late last month that there had been repeated fraud by the Trump Organization. Engoron ordered the cancellation of the business license of Trump and his sons Don Jr and Eric. On Monday, Trump said that the case was a "scam," a "sham" and a political vendetta. And as the session broke off for a lunch break, Trump called Letitia James "a corrupt person, a terrible person. Driving people out of New York." Two senior Republican lawmakers in the US House of Representatives on Friday pressed the Biden administration for tougher enforcement of export controls on sending advanced computing chips and the tools to make them to China.

In a letter to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Representatives Michael McCaul and Mike Gallagher, respectively chairmen of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and a select committee on China, said that new advances by China's top chipmaker show that the sweeping set of rules rolled out a year ago this month need updating to close what the lawmakers called loopholes.

The letter comes after Huawei Technologies unveiled a new Mate 60 Pro smartphone that contained advanced chips made by China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) despite US sanctions.

"The October 7 rules and SMIC’s growing capabilities reveal a stagnant, obscured bureaucracy that does not understand China’s industrial policy, does not understand China’s military goals, and does not understand technology at all - and does not have the will to act," McCaul and Gallagher said in the letter.

The lawmakers urged the Biden administration to update the rules and take immediate action against Huawei and SMIC. They also urged the administration cut off Chinese companies' access to powerful artificial-intelligence chips accessed through cloud computing services and to start enforcing the administration's own rules around placing restrictions on Chinese companies that do not allow US officials to verify whether Chinese companies are complying with US export rules.

Reuters reported this week that the Biden administration has warned China it plans to update the rules. Spokespeople for the National Security Council and the Bureau of Industry and Security, the arm of the Commerce Department that oversees export controls, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Those injured were hospitalised, the statement added. Mexico's national immigration agency said that 55 foreigners were aboard the bus. Peruvians were also among the victims, it said.

Friday's accident is the latest crash involving US-bound migrants. Thousands of migrants from different countries have been travelling across Mexico in buses, trailers and atop freight trains in an attempt to reach the US-Mexican border.

Last Sunday, at least 10 Cuban migrants were killed and 25 injured when a cargo truck carrying them overturned in Chiapas.

The Mexican government has admitted to being overwhelmed by the number of migrants crossing its territory, the vast majority of whom are from Central America, Venezuela, Cuba and Haiti.

Mexican authorities said they detained more than 189,000 migrants last month, while the US border patrol has reported 1.8 million apprehensions between October 2022 and August 2023.

Venezuelan opposition leader and former president of the National Assembly Juan Guaido on Thursday (Oct 5) reacted to the arrest warrant issued against him by saying that President Nicolas Maduro would not kidnap him. Earlier in the day, the prosecutor's office said that it issued the arrest warrant and asked for Interpol's help in apprehending Guaido.

Prosecutors were appointed "to issue an arrest warrant against him and to request a Red Notice from Interpol so that he pays for his crimes," Prosecutor Tarek William Saab said.

In a live stream on his Instagram account, Guaido said that President Maduro would not stop him from reporting his government’s irregularities.

“You (Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro) are accusing me now to also try to explain your supporting groups where is the money you stole. In addition, you used fake news to talk about the alleged 19 billion (US dollars) the country owes for the illegal issue of bonds in your case, expropriation since the (ex-President Hugo) Chavez era, among other things. Then, no Maduro, I did not allow you to kidnap me, I will not allow you to take my voice and I will keep reporting you wherever it is possible to do so,” the opposition leader said.

Guaido has been living in exile in the United States and has been accused of treason, usurpation of functions, money laundering and association with a view to committing a crime. According to the prosecutor's office, he used the resources of oil giant PDVSA to cause losses close to or greater than $19 billion.

The Maduro government says it had 27 different probes of Guaido underway but this is the first time it has sought his arrest. In January 2019, Guaido proclaimed himself “interim president” of Venezuela after challenging the re-election of President Nicolas Maduro in 2018. He failed to dislodge Maduro from power.

The Pentagon said on Thursday (Oct 5) that US warplanes shot down a Turkish drone that was deemed a threat to American forces in Syria. Addressing a press conference, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said that American troops observed drones carrying out strikes early Thursday, some of them inside a "restricted operating zone" (ROZ) near Hasakeh. "US commanders assessed... the UAV, which was now less than a half kilometre from US forces, to be a potential threat," Ryder told reporters. "US F-16 fighters subsequently shot down the UAV in self-defence," he added. The incident came as US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Turkish counterpart Yasar Guler on Thursday, urging "de-escalation in northern Syria and the importance of maintaining strict adherence to de-confliction protocols and communication through established military-to-military channels. Confirming the conversation, Ankara said two officials discussed "the latest developments in Syria." Deaths due to drone attack at Syria military academy climb to 112 Meanwhile, a drone attack on a Syrian military academy has killed 112 people so far, the news agency AFP reported early Friday citing a war monitor. The attack was carried out with "explosive-laden drones", according to the military statement, vowing to "respond with full force". The government declared three days of mourning starting Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that 120 people were injured. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres was "deeply concerned" over the drone attack and the retaliatory shelling, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. India: Army officer opens fire inside J&K camp, injures five personnel

Three doctors were killed and a fourth was injured after gunmen opened fire at them in Rio de Janeiro early Thursday (Oct 5). The attack happened when the doctors were at a beachside eatery in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. Citing local media, a report by the news agency Associated Press said security footage showed a group of black-clad gunmen emerging from a car and running up to the victims’ table and opening fire before making their escape.

One of the victims was the brother of federal lawmaker Sâmia Bomfim. This led to speculation, including from the government, that it may have been a politically motivated assassination. However, a media report said that the authorities’ main line of investigation is that the hit was a case of mistaken identity, with one of the targets confused for the son of a local militia group.

In a statement, Rio state’s civil police said that the fourth doctor was wounded and brought to a hospital, adding that its homicide department is investigating who was responsible for the attack and its motive.

On Thursday, Brazil's Justice Minister Flávio Dino said that he was tasking the federal police with joining the investigation in light of the hypothesis it may have been motivated by the actions of federal lawmakers.

“After these immediate initial steps, we will legally analyze the case. My solidarity with Congresswoman Sâmia, Congressman Glauber and their families,” Dino said in a post on X.

President Lula da Silva, meanwhile, expressed “great sadness and indignation at the news of the execution.”

Sâmia Bomfim’ is married to another lawmaker, Glauber Braga. The couple belong to the same leftist party as former Rio city councillor, Marielle Franco, who was gunned down in 2018. Five years later, that case remains unsolved.

The Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood is known for its high-rise apartments, south of the better-known Leblon and Ipanema beaches. As per the Associated Press report, Ariel Dimarco, an Argentine doctor attending the same conference with his wife, said they were surprised to awaken and hear the news. They had eaten at the same spot three hours before the killing.

President Lula da Silva, meanwhile, expressed “great sadness and indignation at the news of the execution.” Sâmia Bomfim’ is married to another lawmaker, Glauber Braga. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Brazil: Gunmen kill three doctors, injure one in Rio de Janeiro

The Joe Biden-led US administration said on Thursday (Oct 5) that it would resume deportation flights to Venezuela after a deal with Caracas. For years, the US had halted sending migrants back to Venezuela because of instability in the latter country and still maintains sanctions against the government led by Nicolas Maduro.

However, Washington said on Thursday Venezuela has agreed to take back its nationals. According to a report by the news agency AFP, a senior Biden administration official said the first deportation flights would resume in the next few days. They would affect Venezuelan migrants who have arrived in the United States illegally since July 31. "We have already identified individuals in our custody today, who will be removed promptly in the coming days," the official said. Venezuela blames US sanctions for flow of migrants Confirming the development, Venezuela on Thursday blamed US sanctions for the flow of migrants. "The Venezuelan migration in recent years is the direct consequence of the unilateral coercive measures and the blockade of our economy... by the United States," the government said in a statement. Citing a source, the AFP report said that over 100,000 Venezuelans have been intercepted by US border patrol after crossing the southern US frontier from Mexico between May and the end of August. The US, meanwhile, denied that it was overlooking rights concerns in Venezuela to push through the deal. "This decision is consistent with the administration’s efforts to implement a strategy of humane, safe, and orderly enforcement of our immigration laws." Last month, the Biden administration announced it would grant temporary deportation relief and access to work permits to nearly half a million Venezuelans already in the country as of July.
