In a new study, the researchers seem to have identified the gene linked to severe Covid infection. The study was published in Nature Genetics.

The researchers from the University of Oxford found that it is LZTFL1 that is involved in higher severity disease and not SLC6A20.

Around 60 per cent of the people belonging to South Asian heritage carry the higher-risk version of the gene compared to 15 per cent in white people and only two per cent of people from African or Afro-Caribbean heritage.

This gene is also very active in the layer of cells lining the airways and lungs.

The high-risk variant of the gene reduces the ability of cells in the lungs to repair damaged tissue and replace lost cells, which may be needed to overcome severe disease, showed the study.

This variant also makes cells that have more copies of the two proteins, which are called ACE2 and TMPRSS2, that allows the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter cells and infect them. It means is that people who carry this high-risk gene variant, are likely to end up having more cells infected, less ability to heal and as a result, have a severe infection.

A tree, which is standing tall at the back of a suburban home on a leafy Shepparton street, has just claimed a Guinness world record for most types of fruit on a single tree. It bears 10 different fruits.

The tree seems to be the result of a decade’s hard work of Hussam Saraf.

Saraf has transformed his modest stretch of grass in regional Victoria into a tropical oasis, which has rare fruit trees and edible natives.

“The previous record was five fruits grafted onto one tree, so I decided to graft 10. But I was waiting to hear back and they told me my application was rejected, because they needed five different species, not varieties,” the planter said.

For two decades, the previous record was held by Luis H Carrasco of Chile of five grafted fruits, apricot, cherry, nectarine, plum and peach.

The initial application of Hussam for grafting white and yellow nectarines, white and yellow peaches, blood and yellow plums, peachcots, apricots, almonds and cherries was deemed to represent only five types of fruit, placing him at a tie with Carrasco.

The Guinness World Records and UAB Hospital announced on Wednesday that he had broken the world record. Curtis had a twin sister, C’Asya, who died one day after birth.

Premature babies have a far greater chance of health complications and not surviving long after birth, explained Dr Brian Sims.

One of the largest civil settlements in Michigan's history, the payment will mainly go to people, who were children at the time of the water crisis in the former industrial city. It will also benefit adults, who can prove their illnesses were caused by lead poisoning.

In the ruling, while finalising the amount, US District Judge Judith Levy said, "The settlement reached here is a remarkable achievement for many reasons, not the least of which is that it sets forth a comprehensive compensation programme and timeline that is consistent for every qualifying participant."

After 18 months of tough negotiations, the agreement was first reached in August 2020. The most of the payment will come from Michigan, while a small portion will be paid by the city of Flint and an engineering company.

In the city, at least 12 people had from Legionnaires' disease, which is an infection caused by the initial contamination of the water. Many city residents continue to drink bottled water to this day.

According to a new report of the World Health Organisation, there could be a global syringe shortage of around two billion next year.

The shortage may come up due to the worldwide COVID-19 vaccine campaigns. Over 7.25 billion doses have been administered around the globe, as per the AFP. It is double the number of vaccines usually given in a year. So, twice as many syringes have been used, eating up huge number of global supplies.

The production needs to ramp up or the situation may lead to hoarding and panic buying. It will also hit the efforts to protect people against several illnesses, the WHO said.

"We are raising the real concern that we could have a shortage of immunisation syringes, which would in turn lead to serious problems, such as slowing down immunisation efforts. Depending on how the vaccine uptake goes, it could be a deficit of anywhere from one billion to two billion," Lisa Hedman, WHO senior advisor to the Division of Access to Medicines and Health Products, told AFP.

Hedman urged countries to plan ahead at a press conference in Geneva.

Libya's Presidency Council has suspended Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush for "administrative violations" and barred her from travelling, its spokesperson said on Saturday.

The spokesperson, Najwa Wahiba, confirmed the authenticity of a document circulating on social media ordering Mangoush's suspension for carrying out foreign policy without coordination with the council.

Libya's internationally recognised Government of National Accord issued a statement early on Sunday rejecting the council's decision and lauding the minister's efforts, saying she would carry her duties normally.

The statement, issued on the government's Facebook page, said that the Presidency Council has "no legal right to appoint or cancel the appointment of members of the executive authority, suspend them or investigate them." It added that these powers are exclusive to the prime minister.

The Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, a UN-selected assembly that set a roadmap for peace in Libya, chose a three-man Presidency Council headed by Mohamed Menfi until election are held.

Disagreement over the council's suspension of the foreign minister is likely to increase tensions between Libya's rival factions as they try to work together after years of conflict.

Israel's Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Saturday distanced the government from the NSO Group, a firm blacklisted this week by the United States over alleged misuse of its phone hacking spyware.

An investigation by 17 media organisations published in July said NSO's Pegasus software had targeted smartphones of journalists, rights activists and government officials in several countries.

The company sends its products abroad under licences from Israel's Defence Ministry, which has launched its own probe of the company's practices after the alleged software misuse emerged.

No results have been announced and Israel has given no indication so far that it was considering limiting the scope of NSO's exports.

"NSO is a private company, it is not a governmental project and therefore even if it is designated, it has nothing to do with the policies of the Israeli government," Lapid told a news conference in Jerusalem. "I don't think there is another country in the world which has such strict rules according to cyber warfare and that is imposing those rules more than Israel and we will continue to do so."

His comments are the first made publicly by a senior Israeli minister since the US Commerce Department announced the blacklisting on Wednesday.

In the past, NSO Group has been accused of selling hacking tools to authoritarian regimes. NSO says it only sells its products to law enforcement and intelligence agencies and takes steps to curb abuse.

Its inclusion on the US list, for engaging in activities contrary to US national security or foreign policy interests, means that exports to them from US counterparts are restricted.

North Korean mechanised troops held an artillery fire competition over the weekend as part of efforts to boost the country's defence capabilities, state media reported on Sunday

The drills were conducted on Saturday, state news agency KCNA said, and come as North Korea increasingly complains over what it sees as a double standard where its military activities invite international criticism when similar exercises by South Korea and the United States usually do not.

Analysts say Pyongyang is seeking to normalise its defence activities, with the aim of eventually winning international acceptance of its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile arsenals, which have been sanctioned by UN Security Council resolutions.

Much of North Korea's large conventional artillery force is deployed along the fortified border with South Korea, where they have the range to reach as far as the heavily populated capital city of Seoul.

The drills come "at a time when the enthusiasm to undergo intensive training prevails throughout the Korean People's Army (KPA) for ushering in a new heyday in strengthening the state defence capabilities under the banner of self-defence," KCNA reported.

They were overseen by Pak Jong Chon, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the ruling Workers' Pary of Korea, KCNA said.

Pak is a general long seen as a rising star in the country's powerful military and a major player in its missile programme who was promoted to his current positions in September.

General Rim Kwang Il, chief of the General Staff of the KPA, and commanders of the participating units, observed the drills with Pak, KCNA said.

"As soon as the firing orders were given by the commanders of the combined units, gun barrels to annihilate the enemy competitively shelled the target to accurately hit it," the report said.
