The expatriate networking organisation InterNations surveyed nearly 12,000 respondents of 177 different nationalities living in 181 countries and found that New Zealand has a very low rate of welcoming migrants with an overall score of zero per cent.&nbsp;

The survey showed that most respondents felt very positive about their new homes. The majority felt they were of good quality overall, with low maintenance compared to their old home. They felt they had a higher quality of life than in their previous house, and also expressed concerns about the cost of living, safety and bureaucracy.

New Zealand ranked 51 in an international ranking of 52 countries for which there was a large enough sample size. It was beaten to the bottom by Kuwait. A combination of factors contributed to the high rating for Australia's working conditions, which was ranked at number nine overall – people arriving were far more likely to feel that their jobs are well-designed and pay fairly for work done.

The technique based on Raman Effect is a simple, cost-effective tool to find sensitive chemical changes in biological samples. The study, published in the journal ACS Chemical Neuroscience, showed that there could be timely and gradual changes in various biomolecules in the neuronal cells under the viral influence. Additionally, these changes were distinct when compared to the changes observed in other supportive brain cells (that is, astrocyte and microglia).

To adopt the euro, Croatia had to fulfil criteria of price and exchange rate stability, sound public finances and moderate long-term interest rates, all measured against EU benchmarks. "I know that it's a wonderful club to be a member of but it requires commitment, dedication, and continued respect of the rules," European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said at a signing ceremony, reports Reuters.

Researchers in Japan have developed an advanced snake-shaped robot that can climb ladders and wind its way up drainpipes, raising hopes that such devices will soon be used in surveying inaccessible locations in disaster-hit areas. The new robot, which is 2.5 meters long and weighs 6kg, can be used for the inspection of collapsed buildings, according to Fumitoshi Matsuno, the robotics professor at Kyoto University leading the project. The snake, which is now patented technology, has been developed by UKAEA's RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) in a GPB2.7 million (USD3.4 million), a seven-year project. The device can climb up and down a ladder by altering its body shape. Using a laser sensor attached to the tip, it detects the distance between each rung, works out the ideal trajectory and contorts itself to clamber its way up. The device is controlled remotely by an operator who can see images from a camera mounted on the tip. Each joint does not need to be manipulated individually; the operator merely has to input which way the robot should proceed after selecting the appropriate shape.

UKAEA Lead Mechanical Design Engineer Tristan Tremethick said, "Ultrasonic sensors enable the snake to find the correct position, where it then clamps to the pipe and performs the weld from the inside. After the weld, the tool retracts and is removed from the pipe where it can be redeployed. Robots are a key part of our mission to deliver low carbon fusion energy, and we need to become skilled in controlling machines like this one remotely. That's because they will be used to maintain fusion energy power plants."

Japan develops remotely operated snake-shaped robots for disaster site inspection

After the Canadian telecoms operator suffered a major outage that paralyzed the country's banking and emergency services last week, Rogers Communications Inc will be crediting customers with the equivalent of five days service, it said on Tuesday. Rogers has come under pressure from Canadian government, customers and politicians over last Friday's unprecedented glitch that lasted 19 hours. On Tuesday, the telecoms regulator ordered Rogers to respond within ten days to its questions about the network outage that impacted millions of Canadians. "We know that we need to earn back their trust, and as a first step, we will be crediting our customers with the equivalent of five days service," Rogers said in a statement late on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters.

Rogers, which has about 10 million wireless subscribers and 2.25 million retail internet subscribers, would have to credit between C$65 million to C$75 million to customers in the third quarter due to the outage, Scotiabank estimated in a note on Monday. The exercise will be held in the waters and airspace off Shanghai from July 10 to&nbsp;13 and consists of two phases, i.e., port planning and maritime exercise. "China and Pakistan face non-traditional security threats including piracy and maritime terrorists in regions like the Indian Ocean, so it has become necessary that the two countries enhance cooperation in these aspects," Wei Dongxu, a Chinese military expert, told the Global Times on Sunday.

The Fund said Fed monetary policy tightening should help bring down inflation to 1.9 per cent by the fourth quarter of 2023, compared with a forecast of 6.6 per cent for the fourth quarter of 2022. This will further slow US growth, but the IMF still predicted the United States will avoid recession. IMF Western Hemisphere Department economist Andrew Hodge said in a blog post that Fed rate hikes and less government spending will slow consumer spending growth "to around zero by early next year" easing supply strains. Salicornia, a succulent, is already being used as a salt replacement in burger patties -- a rare farming success in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates, which imports nearly all of its food, as reported by AFP. "You have the salty flavour with less sodium, but you also have other benefits," said Tina Siegismund, head of marketing and innovation at UAE-based Global Food Industries, a frozen food manufacturer.

The asparagus-like plant reduces sodium content by 40 per cent in the company's healthy burgers, which also contain chicken, quinoa and kale. Native to parts of North America, Europe, South Africa and South Asia, the plant is ideal for the UAE's inhospitable climate, and contains anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, according to Siegismund. Agriculture produces less than one per cent of GDP in the UAE, a country on the frontline of climate change with temperatures regularly topping 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit) and rising rapidly.

Salicornia cultivation began last year on a number of farms across the UAE as part of an experiment using brine run-off from desalination plants by the Dubai-based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA). &nbsp;Augusto Becerra Lopez-Lavalle, the chief scientist at ICBA, said the research was now underway into generating more of the "high-value crop", which sells for $20 a kilo (2.2 pounds) in France. "We went from... building this prototype, to piloting at scale with eight farmers, and now the question is how to scale up," Lopez-Lavalle told AFP.

In the future, salicornia could "become a really important food ingredient. If there is an economic value and the production system is developed for this, it can become a replacement for salt and any other micronutrients that are added today artificially to processed food." For now, salicornia remains a niche product, its health benefits unknown to most, admits Siegismund. "It's not a product that makes big, big profit, but we believe in it and we will continue," she said, as reported by AFP.
