A passenger bus was ambushed by terrorists in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir’s Gilgit Baltistan (GB) region, killing nine people and injuring 21.

According to Dawn newspaper, the attack happened near Chilas in Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan on Saturday evening.

While dodging the bullets, the Islamabad-bound bus, which was operated by a local private company, veered into the opposite side of the road and collided with a truck.

<h2>Two army men among dead</h2>

Among the dead were two army soldiers, who were in the bus, and one personnel of the Special Protection Unit was injured in the attack, Deputy Commissioner Chilas Arif Ahmed said.

Police said the bus was on its way from Ghizer district to Islamabad via Gilgit.

It started its journey from Ghizer, and made a stop at Gilgit to pick up more passengers, before moving towards the federal capital, the newspaper reported,

The GB interior minister said the bus driver stepped on the accelerator due to the firing which led to its head-on collision with a goods truck. He termed the gun attack as a terror incident.

According to local reports, the terrorists managed to escape from the scene after the attack.

The condition of several people was said to be critical and the death toll was expected to rise further.

So far, no organisation has taken responsibility for the attack.

An explosion at a university in the insurgency-hit southern Philippines claimed four lives and left at least 50 people injured during a Catholic Mass in the varsity’s gymnasium on Sunday (Dec 3).

Mindanao State University said it is “deeply saddened and appalled by the act of violence that occurred during a religious gathering” in a statement on Facebook.

While the officials are investigating who is responsible for the blast at Mindanao State University, regional police director Brigadier General Allan Nobleza told reporters that they are not ruling out the “revenge” angle by pro-Islamic State militants, reported AFP news agency.

The Space Force expressed concern that these man-made space junk have cluttered the large unwatched area between Earth and the Moon, called ‘cislunar’ orbit, making it difficult to identify any potential threat and neutralise them.

US space agency has seen ‘thousands of UFOs’ in one month: Report

At least seven people were killed and 24 injured after a storage tank exploded at a chemical factory in India’s western port city of Surat in Gujarat state on Thursday (Nov 30).

The incident happened at 2 am (local time) at the Aether Industries located in Sachin GIDC industrial area due to the leakage of inflammable chemicals stored in the tank.

According to reports, of the seven killed in the blast, one was an employee of the company while six others were contractual workers.

"All regulatory and government compensation to the families of all deceased shall be completed expeditiously and fully," Aether Industries said in a statement.

<h2>Company announces compensation&nbsp;</h2>

The company promised to give Rs 5 million ($59,984) compensation to the families of the deceased, adding it will also cover the medical expenses of the injured workers and give 2.5 million rupees per person "in case of any permanent disability".

Reuters news agency, quoting sources, reported that Aether has decided to shut the affected plant in Surat "for a few days to cater to structural audit, forensics (and) survey.”

J R Chaudhari, a police officer based near the site of the blast in Gujarat state, earlier told Reuters that seven charred bodies were retrieved from the factory.

India: Seven killed, 24 injured after blast in chemical plant in Surat city

As many as 18 bills have been listed by the Narendra Modi government for it to be taken up in the Winter Session of the Indian Parliament.

According to a bulletin issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, among the 18 bills, two are related to extending the provisions of the Women's Reservation Act to Union Territories Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry.

Bills related to replacing colonial-era criminal laws will also be taken up for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha.

These are Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya.

They were examined by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, which submitted its reports with dissent notes by opposition members.

Apart from that, the government also plans to introduce a bill that seeks to increase the strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly from 107 to 114 in a bid to provide representation to Kashmiri migrants, displaced persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Scheduled Tribes.

Besides the bills, the government has listed the first batch of supplementary demands for grants for 2023-24 for presentation, discussion and voting during the session.

<h2>Cash for query allegations to be taken up&nbsp;</h2>

Moreover, discussions on the cash for query allegations against TMC MP Mahua Moitra will also be taken up in the Lok Sabha (lower house) during the session.

A report on the case, prepared by the Ethics Committee, will be tabled and have to be adopted before the expulsion recommended by the panel comes into effect.

The Winter Session of Parliament begins on December 4 and continues till December 22.

<h2>Govt calls for all-party meeting&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, the government has convened an all-party meeting on December 2 ahead of the winter session, PTI reported quoting sources on Saturday.

The all-party meeting, by convention, is called a day before the session begins. However, due to the counting of votes for five states on December 3, the meeting has been advanced by a day.

Govt lists 18 bills, including on criminal laws, for winter session of parliament

As millions of Indians were glued to their TV sets to receive information about the rescue of 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel for over 400 hours, 70-year-old Barsa Murmu from Jharkhand was praying for his son, who was among the workers, to return safely.

On D-day, that is Tuesday (Nov 28), when workers were being pulled out one by one amidst cheers and chants, an anxious Barsa Murmu passed away hours before his son, Bhaktu (28), was rescued.

What is even more tragic is that Barsa couldn’t even hear the news of his son coming out of the tunnel in Uttarakhand.

His family members told PTI news agency on Wednesday (Nov 29) that Murmu, a resident of Bahda village in East Singhbhum district, died around 8 am (local time) on Tuesday while sitting on his cot, around 12 hours before Baktu was rescued.

<h2>Officials suspect heart attack&nbsp;</h2>

Though the reasons for his sudden death are yet to be confirmed, local government officials suspect that Barsa died of a heart attack.

Murmu's son-in-law Thakar Hansda, who was with the 70-year-old in his dying moments, said that he was anxious about the well-being of his son and suddenly fell from the cot and died.

The relatives said that Barsa anxiously kept waiting for information regarding his son's rescue.

Dumaria police station’s in-charge Sanjeevan Oraon told PTI that the reasons behind the death are not known.

Civil Surgeon, East Singhbhum, Dr Jujhar Manjhi said they had information of the death but no medical report has reached them as yet.

<h2>Jharkhand labourers under medical observation&nbsp;</h2>

Bhaktu, along with 14 others from Jharkhand, is recuperating at AIIMS Rishikesh where he was taken for the health check-up around 2 pm on Wednesday.

Uttarakhand tunnel rescue: Man passes away hours before son’s evacuation

The Indian government on Thursday (Nov 30) approved what is&nbsp;believed to be one of the largest defence deals of the country, placing orders to purchase home-made 97 Tejas light combat aircraft and 156 Prachand helicopters to boost the overall combat capability of the armed forces, media reports said.

The Defence Acquisition Council, headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved the deals worth around Rs 2.23 trillion ($26.74 billion approx.).

According to The Economic Times newspaper, the value of the 97 Tejas aircraft is expected to be around Rs 650 billion ($7 billion), making it the largest-ever fighter aircraft deal in the country.

“The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh on November 30, 2023, accorded approval in respect of Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for various Capital Acquisition Proposals amounting to Rs 2.23 lakh crore, of which, acquisition worth Rs 2.20 lakh crore (98% of total AoN amount) will be sourced from domestic industries,” the government said in a statement.

“This will give a substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry towards the aim of achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance).

In the Indian defence parlance, the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) is a formal first step in the procurement process.

<h2>Will take time to get inducted into military&nbsp;</h2>

Once the DAC grants approval for the AON, contract negotiations with the defence manufacturers will begin, which may take time but not longer than it would have been had the foreign players been involved.

After the negotiations of the pricing and other requirements are concluded, the proposal is then sent to the Cabinet Committee on Security for clearance.

Usually, the final induction into the military may take a few years, or up to a decade.

Moreover, the DAC has also approved deals for the procurement of two types of anti-tank munitions namely, Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type - 2 and Type-3, which are capable of neutralising tanks and armoured personnel carriers and enemy personnel.

“To replace the Indian Field Gun (IFG), which has completed its service life, AoN for procurement of state-of-the-art Towed Gun System (TGS) has been granted which will become a mainstay of Artillery forces of Indian Army.”

“The AoN was also accorded for 155 mm Nubless projectile for use in 155 mm Artillery guns which will enhance lethality and safety of the projectiles. All these equipment of the Indian Army will be procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category,” it said.

<h2>Biggest-ever deals&nbsp;</h2>

Both Tejas aircraft and Prachand helicopters are developed by government-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

According to The Economic Times newspaper, the value of the 97 Tejas aircraft is expected to be around Rs 650 billion ($7 billion), making it the largest-ever fighter aircraft deal in the country. “The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh on November 30, 2023, accorded approval in respect of Acceptance of Necessity (AoNs) for various Capital Acquisition Proposals amounting to Rs 2.23 lakh crore, of which, acquisition worth Rs 2.20 lakh crore (98% of total AoN amount) will be sourced from domestic industries,” the government said in a statement. “This will give a substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry towards the aim of achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance). In the Indian defence parlance, the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) is a formal first step in the procurement process. Will take time to get inducted into military Once the DAC grants approval for the AON, contract negotiations with the defence manufacturers will begin, which may take time but not longer than it would have been had the foreign players been involved. After the negotiations of the pricing and other requirements are concluded, the proposal is then sent to the Cabinet Committee on Security for clearance. Usually, the final induction into the military may take a few years, or up to a decade. Moreover, the DAC has also approved deals for the procurement of two types of anti-tank munitions namely, Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type - 2 and Type-3, which are capable of neutralising tanks and armoured personnel carriers and enemy personnel. “To replace the Indian Field Gun (IFG), which has completed its service life, AoN for procurement of state-of-the-art Towed Gun System (TGS) has been granted which will become a mainstay of Artillery forces of Indian Army.” “The AoN was also accorded for 155 mm Nubless projectile for use in 155 mm Artillery guns which will enhance lethality and safety of the projectiles. All these equipment of the Indian Army will be procured under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category,” it said. Biggest-ever deals Both Tejas aircraft and Prachand helicopters are developed by government-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The Prachand is India’s first indigenous multi-role combat helicopter, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
