China appears to be building an airstrip at a disputed island in the South China Sea which is also claimed by Taiwan and Vietnam, satellite photos show.

The new airstrip is being built on Triton Island and is nearly 2,000 feet long, which is long enough to accommodate turboprop aircraft and drones, but not fighter jets or bombers.

Though the exact timeframe of when the construction began is unknown, The Drive news site, which has access to the images captured by Planet Labs, reported that the construction started a few weeks ago.

According to reports, the airstrip is still in its early stages and is difficult to determine what purpose it’s intended to serve.

The AP news agency, on the other hand, said that the work on Triton Island in the Paracel group mirrors construction on seven human-made islands in the Spratly group to the east, which are equipped with airstrips, docks and military systems.

The satellite imagery also reveals a huge new work area, including a cement plant. It is being reported that this all came up within the last month.

Prior to the construction, the island housed an observation station with two radomes, a small helipad, harbour and large Chinese flags.

Triton is one of the major islands in the Paracel group, and sandwiched between the coast of Vietnam and China’s island province of Hainan.

Though Vietnam and Taiwan have laid claims to the archipelago of some 130 coral islands and reefs spread over 5,800 square miles, China has treated the South China Sea area as its own since the 1970s.

China has been seeking to shore up its vast territorial claims over virtually the entire South China Sea by building island bases on coral atolls nearly a decade ago.

US Navy has regularly undertaken “freedom of navigation operations” near the Chinese-held islands since 2016. Triton was the focus of one of those missions in 2018.

In one of the clips, which was accessed by Bloomberg, a woman angrily asks about a product she owned that matured on July 28. “Why doesn’t the company pay us back?” she says. “It has already matured. Your financial statements said there is a profit.”

According to Bloomberg Economics, as of the end of 2022, China's trust sector's exposure to real estate was about 2.2 trillion yuan, or $302 billion, accounting for 10 per cent of its total assets.

Recently, a lot of trust firms have started defaulting on billions of dollars of investment products and the industry has shrunk by about 20 per cent from its peak in 2017, when regulators began clamping down on the nation’s shadow-banking excesses.&nbsp;

“The big danger is that a negative feedback loop kicks in, with property stress causing strains in the financial system, undermining credit expansion and depressing growth, which, in turn, exacerbates the slump in the property sector,” Bloomberg Economics said in a note.

Dozens of investors protest as China's shadow bank misses payments, signals deep distress in economy

It was raining cash in Ireland after a technical glitch at a bank allowed hundreds of its customers having zero balance to withdraw $1,000 in money.

On Tuesday (Aug 15), customers made a beeline outside the ATM kiosk of Bank of Ireland in Lisduggan at 10 pm (local time) in order to “cash in” on the opportunity, WLR news outlet reported.

A person told WLR that he withdrew over $1,100 from his bank, even though he had less money.

This error was witnessed in its online app that allowed customers to transfer up to $1,000 from their Bank of Ireland accounts into a Revolut account even if they had zero balance WLR reported. They could then withdraw the cash from an ATM.

However, the bank had warned customers that they would recover the money for those who made withdrawals and transfers in excess of their balances.

“We would like to remind customers if transferring/withdrawing funds — including over normal limits — this money will be debited from their account,” the company posted on social media X.

Bank of Ireland has repeatedly faced server outages and other technical glitches, drawing the ire of the customers.

The Central Bank of Ireland previously fined Bank of Ireland for deficiencies in its IT systems, and said it was monitoring the implications of the outage.

Tverecius and Sumskas crossing points, which were not used by commercial vehicles, will be closed and traffic will be diverted to the Medininkai border checkpoint, Lithuania announced.

Lithuania is the second neighbour after Poland to shut border checkpoints with Belarus.

Poland’s move stemmed from the imprisonment of a journalist of Polish origin and the expulsions of Polish diplomats.

Last week, Poland announced that it will move 10,000 additional troops to the Belarus border to support existing guards.

<h2>'Temporary measure'</h2>

“The main goal is to temporarily suspend operations at these two points from August 18,” Deputy Minister of Transport Agnė Vaiciukeviciūte said, according to AP news agency.

He said that the decision would allow the officers to perform better border control checks at other points.

Once part of the Soviet Union, Lithuania declared its independence around 33 years ago. It now belongs to the West-led NATO and the European Union and has been a strong supporter of Ukraine.

The Baltic nation has also emerged as a refuge for those who have fled an authoritarian crackdown in neighbouring Belarus, a Putin ally, and increased repression in Russia.

Lithuania has been repeatedly warning its Western allies that Wagner mercenaries could disguise themselves as asylum seekers trying to cross Belarus’s borders with EU member states, or stage provocations involving refugees.

“It could be some groups of refugees, irregular migrants being transferred in order to cause some kind of unrest,” Lithuanian deputy interior minister Arnoldas Abramavičius said in July.

Though it is unknown how many Wagner troops are present in Belarus, the commander of the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service, Rustamas Liubajevas, has pegged the number up to 4,500, with some of them stationed close to the Lithuanian and Polish borders.

<h2>Eastern European countries wary of Belarus&nbsp;</h2>

The other neighbouring country that has been observing the border situation is Lativa, which mobilised additional guards on Tuesday to strengthen the protection of the external state border, the LETA news agency said.

According to reports, the decision was taken due to the sharp increase in the hybrid threat at the Latvian-Belarusian border over the past days, when 96 attempts by people to cross the state border were detected, as well as the increased involvement of the Belarusian authorities in organising the flow of illegal immigrants.

Latvia believes that these are attempts by Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s regime to push migrants across borders as a method of hybrid warfare against these countries.

Hyundai Motor's unit to buy General Motors' India Talegaon plant in Maharashtra

Even as the death toll continues to mount in the aftermath of landslides in rain-hit northern Himachal Pradesh state in India, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday (August 16) said that the state has suffered losses to the tune of 100 billion rupees ($1.2 billion approx.).

More than 60 people have lost their lives and over 800 people have been evacuated from the low-lying areas of Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district near the Pong Dam, where the water level on the Beas River has continued to go past the danger level due to incessant rainfall.

“Around 100 people are still trapped in Kangra, rescue operation is underway. Another body has been recovered in Shimla. The state has suffered a loss of around&nbsp;₹10,000 crores. It will take around one year for us to redevelop the infrastructure of the state,” CM Sukhu said.

In the wake of the alarming situation, the state government has ordered closure of schools and colleges.

Therefore, considering the above, the Government of Himachal Pradesh orders to keep all schools &amp; colleges (government as well as private) closed on dated 16th August, 2023,” the state's Education Department said in its order on Tuesday.

According to the regional meteorological department, the monsoon trough—an elongated low-pressure area that was to the north of its normal position—is causing heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring Uttarakhand, and has gradually started moving south.

India’s capital New Delhi might face another flood-like situation as officials said that the water level of the Yamuna River breached the warning mark of 204.50 metres on Tuesday (Aug 15)&nbsp;following incessant rains in the upper catchment areas over the past two days.

Data from the Central Water Commission's website showed that the water level at the Old Railway Bridge soared from 203.48 metres at 3 pm (local time) on Monday to 204.94 metres at 6 pm on Tuesday.

The flow rate at the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana's Yamunanagar district stood at 30,153 cusecs, considered moderate during the monsoon season.

An official from the Delhi government's irrigation and flood control department told PTI news agency that low-level flooding may happen at scattered places along the riverbank, but they are assured that it won’t turn grave.

During mid-July, when the monsoon season was at its peak, Delhi was inundated as heavy rainfall caused the Yamuna River to swell, and it overflowed to the upper catchment areas.

<h2>Delhi still reeling from&nbsp;July floods</h2>

On July 13, the Yamuna River swelled to a record 208.66 metres, breaching its previous record and penetrating deeper into the city than in more than four decades.

Over 27,000 people were evacuated during the floods with the losses incurred in terms of property, businesses and earnings running up to crores of rupees.

The river was above the danger mark of 205.33 metres for eight days consecutively since July 10.

Experts blame massive encroachment along Delhi’s floodplain areas as extreme rainfall within a short period of time and silt accumulation raised the riverbed.

The Yamuna River system's catchment spans parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

<h2>Uttarakhand, Himachal battered with rains</h2>

The Delhi officials have been closely observing the situation as the neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been braving torrential rains for the past few days.

While Himachal saw at least 53 casualties due to a rain-induced landslide, Uttarakhand witnessed heavy damage to residential and official buildings.

The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has helped scientists unravel the myriad mysteries of the universe. Astronomers have been able&nbsp;to witness some of the rare cosmological events that shape the understanding of the cosmos.

Now, thanks to JWST, astronomers have been able to establish one of the earlier galaxies known in the universe.

Called the Maisie's Galaxy, it is said to have formed about 390 million years after the Big Bang. For reference, the universe as a whole is about 13.77 billion years old.

Maisie’s Galaxy was named after the daughter of the project’s principal investigator, Steven Finkelstein, an astronomer at the University of Texas at Austin.

The image was first taken in June 2022 as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS), and it was recently confirmed that the galaxy that was detected last summer is in fact among the earliest ever found.

“The exciting thing about Maisie's galaxy is that it was one of the first distant galaxies identified by JWST, and of that set, it's the first to actually be spectroscopically confirmed," Steven Finkelstein said.

It is touted to be one of the four earliest confirmed galaxies observed.

The latest analysis was led by Pablo Arrabal Haro, a postdoctoral research associate at the National Science Foundation's National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory.

<h2>Astronomers&nbsp;evaluating 10 other galaxies </h2>

The CEERS team is currently evaluating about 10 other galaxies that might be from an era even earlier than Maisie's.

It is not easy to determine the timeframe of galaxies in the early universe as it is expanding at an accelerating rate.

Most objects that are outside of our galaxy appear to be receding and take&nbsp;a bit of time to figure out.

Hence to calculate&nbsp;how old it is, astronomers&nbsp;measure its redshift—the amount that its colour has been shifted due to its motion away from us.

Since we live in an expanding universe, the farther back in time we look, the higher an object's redshift.

The estimates of redshifts were based on photometry, the brightness of light in images using a small number of wide-frequency filters.

Those estimates were made using data collected by CEERS during its originally allotted time for the telescope's first observing season.

"This was a kind of weird case," Finkelstein said. "Of the many tens of high redshift candidates that have been observed spectroscopically, this is the only instance of the true redshift being much less than our initial guess."

It’s official! Maisie's Galaxy is one of the earliest known galaxies

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida&nbsp;sending ritual offerings to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Tuesday irked China and South Korea as it has ties to Japan’s past imperialist aggression.

Earlier in the day, Kishida sent a "masakaki" offering instead of paying an in-person visit to the shrine as the nation marked the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II, Kyodo News Agency reported.

&nbsp;Instead of visiting Yasukuni, Kishida laid flowers at the nearby Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery.

Japan will “stick to our resolve to never repeat the tragedy of the war,” Kishida said at a solemn ceremony in a speech that was apparently similar to what he read last year, according to AP news agency.

But three former and current Cabinet ministers visited the shrine. They are Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi and former trade and industry minister Koichi Hagiuda.

<h2>Why is it controversial?</h2>

The reason why the shrine is controversial is because it enshrines the convicted war criminals among the 2.5 million war dead.

Responding to Kishida's tribute and the visit by other lawmakers to the shrine, the South Korean Foreign Ministry expressed "deep disappointment and regret" in its statement, saying that the shrine "glorifies Japan's past wars of aggression and enshrines war criminals."

It called on "responsible figures in Japan to face history squarely and to demonstrate humble reflection and genuine remorse for the past."

Japan’s colonisation of the Korean Peninsula during the 1910-1945 period has long strained ties between both countries.

But it has steadily been improving over the years, with South Korea even suggesting a solution to a long-standing dispute over wartime labour compensation earlier this year.

<h2>China's harsh remarks&nbsp;</h2>

China, too, expressed its dismay, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin saying the “negative move ... once again reflects Japan’s wrong attitude towards history.”

China has made “stern” complaints to Japan, Wang told reporters at a daily briefing.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida sends offering to shrine, irks South Korea and China. Here’s why

Halfway into the year 2023, countries across the world have already been witnessing erratic climatic events.&nbsp;As the threat of global warming breaching historic records looms large, the US government climate experts have warned there is a 50 per cent chance that 2023 will be the warmest year ever recorded and predicted that next year could be even hotter.

"2023 to date has been the third warmest on record," National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) chief scientist Sarah Kapnick told reporters on Monday (Aug 14).

"It is virtually certain—over 99 per cent chance—that 2023 will rank among the five warmest years on record with a nearly 50 per cent probability that 2023 will rank warmest on record," Kapnick said.

The director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Gavin Schmidt, said that the presence of El Nino over the Pacific could further drive up the temperatures next year.

"The biggest impact of El Niño will actually occur in 2024," Schmidt said.

<h2>Next year to be even hotter</h2>

"So, we're anticipating that not only is 2023 going to be exceptionally warm and possibly a record warm year, but we anticipate that 2024 will be warmer still."

On Monday, both NOAA and NASA said that July was the hottest month on record for Earth since the record-keeping began 174 years ago.

Both global sea-surface and land temperatures soared well above longstanding averages.

July was so hot that the United Nations officials announced it would likely break the planet's monthly record before the month was even over.

"July 2023 marked the 47th-consecutive July and the 533rd-consecutive month with temperatures at least nominally above the 20th-century average," the agency said.

Parts of South America, North Africa, North America, and the Antarctic Peninsula were especially hot&nbsp;during which temperatures increased&nbsp;around 4 degrees Celsius above average.

NASA said that the ocean temperatures were especially warm in the eastern tropical Pacific due to the advent of El Nino which began developing in May 2023.

Pakistan former prime minister Imran Khan’s nephew was arrested from Abbottabad city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, his father said.

Hassan Niazi, who is a lawyer by profession, was allegedly picked up on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday from his friend's place.

He had moved there a couple of days ago in order to avoid arrest, Daily Pakistan news outlet reported quoting sources.

“13th and 14th night at 11.30 pm apparently the police and people dressed in plain clothes have arrested,” his father, Hafeezullah Niazi, who is a prominent media personality, said on social media platform X.

“It is feared that he will have to be kept in the penitentiary for two or three days and the aim is to divert the attention of the media and the courts. What is to be gained from this? The state's frustration is palpable,” he said in another post on Aug (15).

Hassan’s detention comes at a time when the ruling government and the military is cracking down on members of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over May 9 violence that involved attacks on private and public installations including Lahore's Corps Commander's House, called Jinnah House.

<h2>Hassan, a proclaimed offender</h2>

Hassan, along with Imran Khan’s two sisters, was named as an offender by a court in a case related to the vandalism of the Jinnah House.

Hassan was earlier arrested on March 26 for attacking police&nbsp;officers and causing chaos near the Judicial Complex in G-11, Islamabad.

He was arrested moments after a judicial magistrate in Quetta had granted him bail against a surety bond worth Rs100,000, following a bail plea filed by the PTI's lawyer forum.

Meanwhile, Khan is spending his time in jail after he was declared guilty on August 5 by a trial court in the Toshakhana case for concealing details of state gifts.

The 70-year-old leader was sentenced to three years in prison and was soon arrested and taken to the Attock Jail in Punjab province.

Pakistan former PM Imran Khan’s nephew arrested

Two years since the Taliban stormed back to power in Afghanistan after 20 years of war against the United States and its allies, life has changed dramatically for many Afghans, particularly women.

Ahead of the August 15 anniversary of the fall of Kabul, four Afghans -- a businesswoman determined to keep her factory open, a farmer relieved by the war's end, a former Taliban fighter proud to serve the new government and a medical student forced to give up her studies -- told AFP how the changes have impacted them.

<h2>The entrepreneur working to keep her business afloat</h2>

Arezo Osmani was "terrified and sad" when the Taliban returned to power, promising the imposition of a stringent interpretation of Islam that has seen women barred from many avenues for work and education.

"I didn't leave my room for 10 days, I thought that everything was over for me, and that it was the same for all Afghans," said Osmani, 30, who started a company producing reusable sanitary pads in 2021.

"But when I went out and saw that people were still going about their lives, it gave me hope and I told myself that I had to stay here too," she said.

She shuttered her business, which had employed 80 women at its peak, amid the uncertainty that gripped the country in the wake of the Taliban takeover.

But she reopened its doors two months later as it was one of the few remaining places "where women could work".

Under the Taliban, women have been pushed out of most NGO and government jobs. Last month, beauty parlours -- another key source of income for women breadwinners -- were also shut down.

"We slowly adjusted to the conditions, and fortunately, as we are a company and work in the health sector, we were able to continue our work, I feel good now," she said.

But a reduction in NGO activity in the country under Taliban authorities has hit her business hard, she said. She still employs 35 women, but buyers are scarce.

"At the moment, we have no contracts, no buyers... if we are not able to sell the pads, it will be difficult to continue the work, but we are trying to stay on our feet," said the mother-of-two.

Despite the challenges, she is determined to do what she can for her country, its women in particular.

"Afghanistan and our society need people like us who stay," she said.

<h2>The farmer trying to make ends meet</h2>

Rahatullah Azizi is grateful for the improved security that has come with the end of the fighting. Now, as the 35-year-old tends his small farm in Parwan province, north of Kabul, he can "move around day and night without worries, thank God".

"There's been a lot of change" since August 2021. "Before it was war, now it's calm."

As a result of the armed conflict, around 38,000 civilians were killed and over 70,000 wounded between 2009 and 2020 alone, according to an annual report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

However, the father-of-two is still weighed down by worry.

Afghanistan's economy, already battered by decades of war, has been mired in crisis after billions of dollars in international aid were cut following the Taliban government's takeover.

Economic output has collapsed and nearly 85 percent of the country lives in poverty, according to the latest report from the UN Development Programme. Drought and locusts have also plagued the country's crops.

"People don't buy much of our produce any more," said Azizi, who farms just over one hectare of rented land.

"I used to sell seven kilos of tomatoes (15 pounds) for 200 afghanis ($2), but now I only sell that for 80 afghanis."

He used to earn an income from cereal crops, he said, but no longer.

"I now have just enough to eat, I can't put any money aside," added the farmer, who holds out hope he can send his children to university to get the education he never had.

<h2>The Talib fighter-turned-policeman</h2>

For 23-year-old Lal Muhammad, the return of the Taliban to power has brought more economic stability.

He joined the group four years ago when membership meant being a rebel fighter regularly away from home.

Now, he is a police officer in the country's second-largest city, Kandahar, and earning a salary of around 12,000 afghanis ($142) per month -- "enough" for his family.

He's happy to have a regular wage, but said he "didn't dream of having cars or making money".

"My dream was to study and serve in the Islamic Emirate government. I'll stick with it till the end," said Muhammad, using the Taliban authorities' name for the government.

"Thank God they're back."

The Taliban movement, birthed in Kandahar in southern Afghanistan, controlled the country from 1996 to 2001.

"We are very happy. We don't have any problems, there is no war and no fighting," he said. "We are serving the Emirate and our people."

<h2>The ex-medical student searching for a new future</h2>

Hamasah Bawar once envisioned her future in Afghanistan in the medical field. Since the Taliban took over and barred women from universities, she only sees hope outside the country.

"The closure of universities was devastating, not only for me but all my classmates. We are broken and it's the worst thing we could have imagined happening to us, but it happened," said the 20-year-old resident of Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.

"If a girl is educated, her whole family will be educated, if a family is educated, the whole society will be educated... If we are not educated a whole generation will be left illiterate," said the young woman, who had won an internship at a clinic quickly closed down under the Taliban government.

"Because I want a better future, for my education, I have no other choice but to leave Afghanistan."

Bawar said there was "a big difference" between the previous US-backed government and that of the Taliban, which has not been recognised by the international community.

"There used to be a lot of freedom, today we can't even go to the Blue Mosque (a famed shrine surrounded by gardens) for enjoyment... Most activities are banned for girls and women now."

Bawar's mother is a teacher at a primary school, the level at which girls' education now stops.

"It's not only what I want, all the girls and women of Afghanistan want their freedom back."
