The African Union (AU) has suspended Niger from the bloc with immediate effect in response to the coup ousting President Mohamed Bazoum’s government.

The Peace and Security Council said that Niger would remain suspended until civilian rule is restored in the country.

The council announced the decision on Tuesday (Aug 22) following a meeting in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.

It comes after several Western countries cut aid to Niger following the July 26 coup. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also imposed sanctions and last week, agreed on a “D-day” to begin a military intervention.

ECOWAS said the use of force would be the “last resort” after exhausting diplomatic channels for negotiation.

It agreed to activate a "standby force" as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger.

On Monday, it rejected a proposal by Niger’s military government to hold elections within three years.

<h2>Don't legitimise Niger's military government&nbsp;</h2>

The AU said it was reviewing ECOWAS’s plan of military intervention and called on all of its member states and the international community to not undertake any action to legitimise Niger’s military government.

“We are studying the ECOWAS decision to prepare forces for deployment in Niger, and the African Commission will evaluate its repercussions,” the statement said.

“We strongly reject any external interference by any party or country in the affairs of the continent, including private military companies.”

The AU also reiterated calls for the coup leaders to immediately release elected President Mohamed Bazoum, who has been detained since the coup, and return to their barracks.

<h2>Mali, Burkina Faso extend support to Niger&nbsp;</h2>

As the prospect of the use of force by the ECOWAS looms large, Mali and Burkina Faso—both ruled by the military junta— have pledged support to Niger, saying that any military intervention in their neighbour would be considered a "declaration of war" against their countries.

This is the fifth time Niger has fallen under military rule since the landlocked state gained independence from France in 1960.

In 2021, Bazoum won a landmark election, paving the way to the country's first peaceful transition of power.

He has been held with his family at the president's official residence since the coup, with growing international concern over his conditions in detention.

Briefing reporters on Monday (Aug 21) ahead of President Joe Biden’s visit, Maui&nbsp;County Mayor Richard Bissen said&nbsp;that a missing persons list was created with the help of FBI and local authorities that initially contained more than 2,000 names in the two weeks since the blaze.

“To the tireless work of the FBI and the Maui Police Department, over 1,285 individuals have been located safe,” he said. “We are both saddened and relieved about these numbers as we continue the recovery process.”

Of the 114 dead, Bissen said that only 27 have been identified and 11 families have been notified.

“The number of identified will rise and the number of missing may decrease, but there will be daily fluctuations in the numbers as family members are added and removed from the lists,” he said.

<h2>'Saddened and relieved of these numbers'</h2>

He said that he was “both saddened and relieved about these numbers” and urged those who had loved ones still missing to provide a DNA sample to assist in the recovery search.

Local authorities have been using DNA testing to help identify the human remains.

“The more family members that we can get, the better comparisons we can do and the faster we can do them,” Julie French from the Rapid DNA company ANDE, whose technology is being used to help identify victims, said in a video shared&nbsp;by Maui’s government on social media.

<h2>Biden to visit amidst criticism&nbsp;</h2>

In a statement on Sunday (Aug 20), Joe Biden vowed to “do everything in my power to help Maui recover and rebuild from this tragedy” while dually respecting the sacred lands, cultures and traditions of the area.

Over the months, he often boasted about how the number of users coming to X and consuming content increased.

However, recent data collected by third-party researcher Travis Brown has given some reality check,&nbsp;suggesting that the picture isn’t as rosy as depicted by Musk.

The data, which was reviewed by Mashable, shows that around 42 per cent of Musk’s own followers, or 65.3 million accounts, have zero followers on their account, indicating that they may be inactive.

Further, more than 72 per cent, or nearly 112 million, of these users following Musk have less than 10 followers on their account.

And as far as consuming content on the platform is concerned, over 62.5 million of Musk followers have zero tweets.

This includes users who have deleted all of their tweets by the time this data was collected over the past few weeks as well as accounts that have never before tweeted.

More than 100 million Musk followers have less than 10 tweets posted to their accounts.

<h2>Fake accounts?</h2>

Recently, the Tesla CEO claimed that X now has more than 540 million "monthly users".

Another interesting detail that has emerged from the data is exactly when his followers created their accounts.

Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022. Out of all of Musk's current followers, more than 25 per cent, or 38.9 million, were created on or after that date.

The average number of followers for all 153 million accounts following Musk is just around 187. However, Brown tells Mashable that the follower "distributions are so skewed" that the averages aren't "very meaningful" here.

The data has further shown how many of Musk’s followers subscribe to X Premium, previously known as Twitter Blue that was re-launched with a price tag of $8 a month.

Only around 453,000 Musk followers or 0.3 percent subscribe to X Premium, the data shows.

Earlier this week, Mashable reported earlier that there were around 830,000 X Premium subscribers in total based on another data set compiled by Brown.

India climbed up to the 11th place in the global direct selling ranking as it clocked sales of $3.23 billion (around Rs 26,852 crore) in 2022, said a report by global industry body the World Federation of Direct Selling Association (WFDSA).

Last year, India’s direct selling registered a growth of 5.4 per cent over 2021 retail sales, the WFDSA report stated.

In the last three years, India saw the highest Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of over 13.3% on a constant dollar basis.

While India registered strong growth, the global direct selling industry reported a decline of 1.5 per cent in 2022 to $172.89 billion, PTI news agency reported.

The United States, though registering a decline of 5 per cent over 2021, retained its top spot with direct sales worth $40.52 billion. It was followed by Korea, Germany, China, Japan and Malaysia.

<h2>Report a major booster for Indian retail industry&nbsp;</h2>

Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) Chairman Rajat Banerji said that the report has injected optimism in the mood of the industry and added that India has the potential to make a position in the top five global markets over the next decade."

With the notification of Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules 2021 and its subsequent amendment, the direct selling industry in India should see stability that could inspire investor confidence as well as interest from the large global direct selling companies, he added.

China on Monday (Aug 21) protested against a statement given by the US, Japan and South Korea wherein they criticised Beijing's “dangerous and aggressive behaviour” in the marine disputes relating to the East and South China Sea.

The statement came on Friday (Aug 18) during a summit hosted by US President Joe Biden to discuss a three-way security cooperation at the Camp David presidential retreat.

On Monday, China hit back at the leaders saying they "smeared and attacked China on Taiwan-related and maritime issues, grossly interfered in China's internal affairs and deliberately sowed discord between China and its neighbours."

Addressing the media. foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said China expresses "strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition and has lodged solemn representations with relevant parties".

The Camp David summit marked the first official meeting between US President Joe Biden, his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk-yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

<h2>Trilateral meeting&nbsp;</h2>

The meeting comes in the wake of the thawing of relations between South Korea and Japan amidst China’s growing assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region also due to a string of recent&nbsp;North Korean missile tests.

Under the pledge, the three countries agree to consult, share information and align their messaging with each other in the face of a threat or crisis, the official said.

Despite it being&nbsp;obvious, Biden maintained that the summit “was not about China”, rather it was focused on broader security issues.

But in their joint summit concluding statement, the three countries noted China’s “dangerous and aggressive” action in the South China Sea and said they “strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the waters of the Indo-Pacific.”

Jas Uksingh, a Derby resident, wrote on Facebook, “What was supposed to be a positive and welcome return of our national motherland Punjabi sport of kabaddi in Derby, has sadly ended in shameful circumstances.

“Gang violence is not acceptable at sporting events, and should not be tolerated with the community. The UK Kabaddi Federation must take necessary steps and safeguards to stamp this thoughtless violence out from national tournaments.

“We are aware of videos of the incident circulating online, we are carrying out investigations in relation to these and I would encourage anyone with footage to send it to us for enquiries to continue.

“Officers remain in the area to provide reassurance to the community, please speak to them if you have any information or contact us using the methods provided.”

A senior Delhi government official was arrested by the police on Monday in India's capital New Delhi on charges of raping his deceased friend’s teen daughter for several months.

His wife was also booked after it was found that she gave abortion pills to the minor girl when she became pregnant, in a bid to keep the matter under wraps.

"We have arrested two accused in connection with this case. One of them is Premoday Khakha, 51... the second is his wife Seema Rani, 50. We have arrested Seema Rani as she was aware of the incident and (was) effective in getting the abortion," senior Delhi Police officer Sagar Singh Khalsi said.

According to police, the 16-year-old girl was staying with the family of Premoday Khakha—a deputy director in the women and child development department in the Delhi government—after her father passed away in October 2020.

The matter came to light last week when the girl was admitted to a hospital over anxiety issues.

During psychological counselling, she disclosed her ordeal to the doctors, counsellors, and police officers and revealed that she was sexually harassed, physically molested, and repeatedly raped for several months between 2020 and 2021.

The girl—who is studying Class XII—is said to be recovering and receiving care.

<h2>Official booked under POCSO Act</h2>

Following this, the police in Burari area registered a case against Khakha under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 376(2)(f)(being a relative, guardian, or teacher of, or a person in a position of trust or authority towards the woman, commits rape on such woman), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman's consent), 120B ( (criminal conspiracy).

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered the suspension of the government official and sought a report from the chief secretary by 5 pm Monday (Aug 21).

“The Delhi government is sensitive in regard to such serious matters of women's safety and child abuse. If he has committed any such reprehensible act, the sternest possible action should be taken against him."

The FIA filed the case after finding his deliberate involvement in misusing the cipher (a classified diplomatic document), the report said

It is said that the case was filed a few days ago, but the authorities have declined to share a copy of the FIR.

<h2 dir="ltr">More trouble for Imran Khan&nbsp;</h2>

Offences under Section 5, if proved in a court of law, involve punishment of imprisonment from two to 14 years, and in some cases even a death sentence.

Khan, in the days before he was ousted due to no-confidence motion, had cited the cipher to allege US’ involvement in toppling his government.&nbsp;

He had brandished the cipher at a public rally to back his claims. The US has time and again denied such allegations, terming them “categorically false”.

Dawn newspaper later reported that former principal secretary Azam Khan handed over the cipher to the PTI chief, who later told him that he had misplaced it and did not return it despite repeated requests.

In an interview to VOA earlier this year, Khan again shared the contents of the cipher.

"Well, the cipher is a reality. It was an official meeting [that] initiated [conversation on] both sides, between Donald Lu, the undersecretary of state for South Asia, and the Pakistan ambassador, and this was brought to the National Security Committee and Cabinet," Khan said.

"Having said that, it's in the past; we have to move on. It's in the interest of Pakistan to have good relations with the US, and that's what we intend to do," he said.

The talks were held to resolve the issues at Depsang Plains and CNN Junction near Demchok—the remaining friction points between the two sides.

For more than three years, the two Asian giants have been locked in an intense border conflict in the northern Indian territory.

The talks come days after the 19th round of the China-India Corps Commander Level Meeting took place at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point in the Leh district of Ladakh , a Union territory of India.&nbsp;

The talks happened on August 13 and 14 and were said to have occurred in a "candid and pragmatic atmosphere" on the Indian side of the border.&nbsp;

In a candid and pragmatic atmosphere, the two sides had a positive, constructive and in-depth discussion on the resolution of the remaining issues along the LAC in the Western Sector."&nbsp;

Since the commencement of the Corps Commander-level talks in 2020, both India and China have successfully undertaken disengagement from five friction points — Galwan, the north and south banks of Pangong Tso, and Patrolling Points (PP) 15 and 17A in the Gogra-Hot Springs area.

Indian, Chinese armies hold Major-General level talks to resolve Eastern Ladakh stand-off 

Poland foiled a network of "amateur" agents established by Russia in its territory who were tasked with carrying out operations like sabotage, assassination and arson, Washington Post reported on Friday (Aug 18).

According to the US-based newspaper, the Russian intelligence, GRU, was the brains behind the whole operation. It advertised seeking hands for menial tasks like posting fliers or hanging signs in public spaces.

These cryptic job listings had begun appearing on Russian-language Telegram channels in Poland at the start of this year.

The recruits were paid in cryptocurrencies and wire transfers from untraceable bank accounts, officials said. &nbsp;

Since the dismantling of the network earlier this year, Poland's security services have gathered evidence that has suggested that Russia has been planning other, deadly operations in Poland.

A representative of Poland's domestic security service (ABW), who remained anonymous, told the newspaper that the Russian spy agencies are still active in Poland.&nbsp;

He claimed that recruits had also been tasked with carrying out arson attacks and an assassination, but would not discuss the targets.

"This threat was eliminated, but the broader threat remains," he added.

Washington Post said that its article is based on interviews with more than a dozen security officials in Poland, Ukraine and the United States, as well as information from documents, suspects’ social media accounts, and interviews with relatives and associates of those arrested.
