Banerjee criticised the detention of Trinamool Congress MPs in Delhi, accusing the BJP-led central government of suppressing democratic protest and misusing law enforcement agencies.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chairperson Mamata Banerjee on Friday launched a protest in Kolkata against the Enforcement Directorate (ED), a day after the central agency conducted raids at the office of I-PAC. Banerjee criticised the detention of Trinamool Congress MPs in Delhi, accusing the BJP-led central government of suppressing democratic protest and misusing law enforcement agencies. She said dignity and respect in a democracy are non-negotiable, asserting that citizens and elected representatives cannot be treated arbitrarily by those in power. Earlier in the day, several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs were detained in the national capital on Friday for protesting outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah's office against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid on the I-PAC office. In a post on X, CM Banerjee wrote, "I strongly condemn the shameful and unacceptable treatment meted out to our Members of Parliament. Dragging elected representatives on the streets for exercising their democratic right to protest outside the Home Minister's office is not law enforcement - it is arrogance in uniform. This is a democracy, not the BJP's private property. Democracy does not function on the convenience or comfort of those in power. When BJP leaders protest, they expect red carpets and special privileges. When opposition MPs raise their voices, they are dragged, detained, and humiliated. We are citizens by right, not at the mercy of a chair, a badge, or a position of power. No government, no party, and no Home Minister gets to decide who deserves dignity in a democracy," the post read. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) accused Banerjee of entering the residential premises of Prateek Jain, the director of top political consultancy group I-PAC, during its ongoing search operation in Kolkata and taking away "key evidence", including physical documents and electronic devices. In a statement, the ED said that its team was conducting the search proceedings in a peaceful and professional manner until the arrival of the West Bengal Chief Minister, along with a large number of police officials.

The PIL raises serious concerns regarding alleged violations of borrowers' fundamental right to privacy and to data protection by several NBFC-backed Digital Lending Applications (DLAs) operating in India.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking coercive action against Regulated Entities (REs), Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and Lending Service Providers (LSPs operating digital lending applications), allegedly found to be in breach of the Reserve Bank of India's Digital Lending Guidelines. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia sought responses from the Union Government, the RBI, Google LLC and Apple India Private Limited on the issues raised in the petition. The PIL raises serious concerns regarding alleged violations of borrowers' fundamental right to privacy and to data protection by several NBFC-backed Digital Lending Applications (DLAs) operating in India. The petitioner Himakshi Bharghav contends that, despite the RBI's binding Digital Lending Guidelines issued on May 8, 2025, multiple platforms continue to access prohibited mobile phone resources, such as contact lists and call logs; collect excessive personal and device-level data; and employ coercive, blanket consent mechanisms. According to the plea, the petitioner, a public-spirited student, approached the High Court in public interest to safeguard the privacy and data rights of digital borrowers across the country, particularly students, first-time borrowers, gig workers and economically vulnerable sections. The RBI's revised guidelines, the petition notes, expressly prohibit DLAs from accessing telephony functions and sensitive phone data, allowing only limited, one-time access to features such as the camera, microphone, or location, strictly for onboarding and KYC purposes, subject to explicit consent. The petition alleges that these safeguards are being routinely flouted. The plea further states that upon examining digital lending applications available on major app platforms, several NBFC-backed apps, including Slice, Branch, Navi, Home Credit, Simpl, Dhani, Refyne, ZestMoney, FreePay and LendingPlate, were found to allegedly continue accessing borrowers' contacts and call logs and collecting data far beyond what is necessary for legitimate lending purposes. Such practices, it is argued, render consent involuntary because users are compelled to accept broad, non-negotiable privacy policies to access credit. The PIL also points out that a detailed complaint, supported by documentary evidence, was submitted to the RBI on November 18, 2025, identifying specific violations of the Digital Lending Guidelines. Despite this, the petition claims that no effective enforcement action or public response has been taken, thereby allowing the impugned applications to continue operating on major app platforms. Placing reliance on the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in K.S. Puttaswamy (Privacy-9J.) v. Union of India, the petitioner contends that the alleged data collection practices violate Article 21 of the Constitution and fail the proportionality test, having no reasonable nexus with legitimate objectives such as KYC or credit assessment. It is argued that the RBI's alleged inaction amounts to a failure to discharge its statutory and constitutional duties and results in unequal protection under Article 14. Terming the injury as widespread, continuous and incapable of individual redress, the petitioner has urged the Delhi High Court to exercise its writ jurisdiction under Article 226 and issue appropriate directions to curb ongoing privacy violations by digital lending platforms and ensure effective enforcement of the RBI's Digital Lending Guidelines in the larger public interest. Both these programmes are now on schedule, and we hope to deliver our commitments to the Air Force... AMCA will have several new technologies because it's a fifth-generation aircraft; it is a stealth aircraft, so several new technologies will come in with the AMCA," Kamat said. The 'Aeronautics 2047' seminar is being held at the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), Bengaluru, to mark 25 years of the Tejas programme and chart the future of Indian aviation. It was inaugurated by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh. Addressing the audience, the Air Chief Marshal praised ADA for completing 25 years of Tejas flight operations and pointed out the importance of meeting delivery deadlines to keep the Indian Air Force operationally prepared in the face of changing security challenges. Here's all you need to know He also stated that the Tejas programme had revolutionised India's defence aviation and aircraft design capabilities. "It is an exceptional milestone that we achieved in 2001, and that has changed the history of our defence aviation and defence designing. We are looking forward very eagerly to the further programmes, Mark II and AMCA, and I'm sure they're going to be more successful than what Tejas was and with better timelines," he said. Kamat underlined the importance of developing indigenous, cutting-edge technology to minimise dependence on imports, thereby realising the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047. The seminar has brought together experts from industry, academia, government laboratories and the aerospace sector. Discussions are focused on next-generation aircraft design, advanced manufacturing, propulsion systems, flight testing, avionics, digital twin technology, artificial intelligence in aircraft design and certification challenges. ADA has designed and developed the LCA Tejas, which has completed more than 5,600 successful flight trials. Over 100 design work centres, including government laboratories, academic institutions and private industries, contributed to the programme. Several critical technologies, such as carbon composites, lightweight materials, fly-by-wire flight control systems, digital utility management systems and glass cockpit architecture, were developed as part of the Tejas programme, making it a fourth-generation fighter aircraft. The LCA Mk1A is an advanced variant designed to meet the Indian Air Force's operational requirements, while the LCA Mk II and the naval variant are currently under development. So far, 38 Tejas aircraft, including 32 fighters and six trainers, have been inducted into two Indian Air Force squadrons. Officials said the programme has enabled India to acquire the capability and capacity to design and build fighter aircraft indigenously. Several public sector units, defence PSUs, industries and MSMEs are showcasing indigenously developed airborne systems and components as part of the seminar.
