Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has issued a landmark presidential decree that for the first time formally recognises the rights of the country's Kurdish minority, including recognising the Kurdish language as a national language and restoring citizenship to previously stateless Kurdish Syrians, reported Al Jazeera. The move, announced on Friday amid ongoing tensions in the country's north, is being described by officials as a major step toward addressing decades of marginalisation and integrating Kurds more fully into Syria's national framework. Decree No. 13 of 2026 declares Syrians of Kurdish origin an "essential and integral part" of the Syrian people and affirms that their cultural and linguistic identity is an inseparable component of the nation's diverse identity. Under the decree, the Kurdish language is designated a national language alongside Arabic and may be taught in public and private schools in areas where Kurdish communities are significant. In a symbolic gesture, the decree also makes Nowruz, the Kurdish New Year celebrated on March 21, a paid official public holiday nationwide, describing it as a national celebration of spring and fraternity. The government has committed to protecting cultural and linguistic diversity and to safeguarding the rights of Kurds to preserve their heritage and arts while developing their mother tongue within the framework of Syria's sovereignty, reported Al Jazeera. Another key component of the decree is the abolition of discriminatory laws and measures dating back to a controversial 1962 census in Hasakah province, which stripped many Kurds of Syrian nationality. The new decree grants full citizenship and equal rights to all Kurdish Syrians, including those previously registered as stateless. The decree also prohibits ethnic or linguistic discrimination and requires state institutions and media to adopt an inclusive national discourse. Penalties are stipulated for those who incite ethnic strife, reflecting an official push toward national unity after more than a decade of conflict. However, the decree comes against a backdrop of continued conflict and mistrust. Recent fierce clashes between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Aleppo left at least 23 people dead and displaced hundreds of thousands, underscoring persistent tensions. Negotiations between Damascus and Kurdish authorities to integrate Kurdish civil and military structures into the Syrian state have made limited progress, and many observers remain cautious about whether the decree will translate into lasting peace or tangible changes on the ground. Despite these challenges, Syrian officials and Kurdish representatives alike have hailed the decree as historic, marking the first formal recognition of Kurdish rights since Syria's independence in 1946. The Enforcement Directorate has filed a chargesheet before a Delhi court against Jawad Ahmad Siddiqui, Chairman of the Al Falah Group, in connection with an alleged money-laundering case. The chargesheet has also been filed against the Al Falah Charitable Trust, taking the total number of accused in the matter to two. According to the agency, the investigation was initiated on the basis of two FIRs registered by the Delhi Police Crime Branch. The FIRs alleged that the university had falsely claimed accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Enforcement Directorate has informed the court that it has provisionally attached assets as part of its probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Maharashtra State Election Commissioner D T Waghmare on Thursday firmly rejected allegations of irregularities related to the indelible ink being used in the ongoing Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections 2026, asserting that there was no wrongdoing in the polling process. Responding to concerns raised by opposition leaders over the ink used allegedly being erasable, Waghmare said there was deliberate creation of confusion. The US has quietly sold Venezuelan oil worth $500 million just days after Maduro’s capture, with revenues now held under Washington’s control.

The United States, as per reports, has completed its first sale of Venezuelan oil since the capture of the country's leader Nicolas Maduro. Talking to Semafor, a senior Donald Trump administration official said that the first sale of Venezuelan oil by the US is valued at about $500 million. The development comes following the capture of Nicolas Maduro, the former leader of the South American country 11 days ago. Following this, Trump said that US is taking control of Venezuela's oil reserves and recruit American companies to invest billions of dollars to refurbish the country's gutted oil industry, CNN had reported,. Trump had, on January 9 (local time) signed an executive order providing details on how his administration plans to block US courts or creditors from seizing any revenue that the US collects from Venezuelan oil and holds in American Treasury accounts. According to the Semafor report, revenue from the oil sales is currently being held in bank accounts controlled by the US government, as indicated in Friday's order, according to the administration official. The main account, according to a second senior administration official, is located in Qatar. "President Trump brokered a historic energy deal with Venezuela, immediately following the arrest of narcoterrorist Nicolas Maduro, that will benefit the American and Venezuelan people," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. "President Trump's team is facilitating positive, ongoing discussions with oil companies that are ready and willing to make unprecedented investments to restore Venezuela's oil infrastructure," she continued. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the US government would oversee the sale of the oil and proceeds would be deposited into accounts controlled by Washington and Fox News has reported that additional sales are expected in the coming days and weeks. As per a CNN report Venezuela is sitting on a massive 303 billion barrels worth of crude -- about a fifth of the world's global reserves, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). Trump previously said he plans to mobilize major U.S. oil companies to invest billions in fixing Venezuela's broken oil infrastructure. We are going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken oil infrastructure and start making money for the country," Trump said. Meanwhile, US President Trump said on Wednesday (local time) that he had a "long call" with Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who assumed the acting presidency after the January 3 capture of Maduro by US forces, described the call as conducted "within a framework of mutual respect," in which a bilateral work agenda for the benefit of both nations was addressed, according to her social media posts following the discussion. "I held a long and courteous telephone conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, conducted within a framework of mutual respect, in which we addressed a bilateral work agenda for the benefit of our peoples, as well as pending matters between our governments," Rodriguez said in a post on X. After Maduro's capture, Trump said Washington would "run" Venezuela during a transition and needs "total access... to the oil and to other things in their country."
