External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held a detailed telephonic conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on the ongoing West Asia conflict and its implications for global energy security. In a post on X, Jaishankar said that both leaders also discussed the global economic implications due to the conflict. "Had a detailed telecon this evening with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Our discussions focused on the West Asia conflict and its impact on the international economy. We particularly spoke about energy security concerns. Agreed to remain in touch," the post read.

The discussions came after US President Donald Trump, earlier today, announced that he had instructed the US Department of War to delay any military action against Iranian power plants and energy sites for five days, citing ongoing diplomatic engagements with Tehran amid escalating tensions in West Asia. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the United States and Iran had held "very good and productive conversations" over the past two days aimed at resolving hostilities in the region. He added that the decision to pause strikes was based on the "tenor and tone" of the discussions, which he described as "in-depth, detailed, and constructive". Trump further stated that the conversations will continue through the week. "I am please to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East," the post read."Based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, witch will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy Infrastructure for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" it added. The announcement came as the war between Israel, the US, and Iran had entered its fourth week. However, Iran has categorically denied the claim of talks made by Trump. Speaker of Iran's Parliament, MB Ghalibaf, rejected Trump's claims regarding ongoing negotiations between Tehran and Washington, asserting that no such talks have taken place. In a series of posts on X, Ghalibaf rejected the US President's claims, stating that the remarks were made to "manipulate the financial and oil markets", which have seen much disruption amid the conflict. He further stated that the remark was made to get the US and Israel out of the "quagmire", referring to the war against the Islamic Republic. "No negotiations have been held with the US, and fakenews is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped," the speaker stated in his post. "Iranian people demand complete and remorseful punishment of the aggressors. All Iranian officials stand firmly behind their supreme leader and people until this goal is achieved," he added.

Rain lashed several parts of the national capital on Wednesday (March 18), bringing much-needed relief from a recent spell of rising temperatures and humid conditions. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, was reported across different areas of New Delhi, resulting in a noticeable drop in temperatures. Residents experienced cloudy skies and intermittent showers, with some areas also witnessing brief spells of strong winds. Meanwhile, similar weather conditions were observed in parts of Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, where rainfall offered respite to locals from the ongoing heat. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi-NCR is expected to witness a shift in weather over the next 48 hours. On March 19, officials predict generally cloudy skies with initial spells of very light rain or drizzle, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the forenoon, followed by one or two additional spells of light rain in the afternoon and evening. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, are also expected. "While a slight rise of 1-2°C in maximum temperatures is expected within the next 24 hours, the Meteorological Department forecasts a gradual and significant fall of 4-6°C over the subsequent three days. Overall, maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 'below normal' (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) and 'normal' levels throughout the coming week," the RMC stated. The weather advisory extends across the entire NCR, including satellite cities such as Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. The forecast mirrors the capital's outlook: generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely through March 20. The meteorological department has placed these districts under a 'Yellow' alert, advising residents to remain cautious of lightning and gusty winds, particularly during the evening hours. "This change comes after a relatively warm period for the capital. In the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures across Delhi settled in the range of 32-34°C, which is roughly 1.6°C to 3.0°C above the seasonal normal at several locations. Safdarjung, the city's primary weather station, recorded a high of 33.6°C, while minimum temperatures remained steady between 16-18°C," the RMC further added. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the day, forecasting a slight drop in temperature. The air quality remained in the "poor" category. On X, the IMD stated, "Orange colour nowcast for north Rajasthan districts for light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) during the next three hours. A yellow colour alert has been issued for light rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh during the next three hours." Also Read: Kill anyone in sight: Israel authorises its military to kill any high-ranking Iranian officials The department further noted that light rainfall or drizzle was "very likely" across Delhi and NCR on Wednesday, with gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph expected in the afternoon. In the JNU student protest case, the Patiala House Court on Friday granted bail to all the accused students. The court directed that each of the accused furnish a bail bond of Rs. 25,000. The court has also ordered verification of the bail bonds. The developments come after student protestors of JNU on Thursday, led by JNUSU, were detained by Delhi Police after they took out a protest against Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit. After the police locked the university doors and prevented protestors from crossing the barricades, they met with a scuffle, following which the police detained several protestors. Earlier today, the Delhi Police accused the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student protestors of physically assaulting the security personnel. The Delhi Police stated that the student protestors turned violent and "pelted banners and sticks, threw shoes, and even bit the personnel," following which those who violated the law were detained. "During the protest, barricades were damaged, and the demonstration turned violent. Protestors pelted banners and sticks, threw shoes, and even physically assaulted Delhi Police personnel, including biting. As a result, several police personnel were injured. The protestors were stopped and contained at the North Gate of the JNU campus and were gradually moved back inside. Those who became violent and did not obey lawful orders were detained. Further details will be shared in due course," Delhi Police said. The police further said that the JNUSU called the protest march from the campus to the Ministry of Education despite being denied permission by the University administration. The police said that around 500 students gathered in the protest and left the main gate of the university, though they were asked to restrict themselves to the campus. "A call for a Long March from JNU to the Ministry of Education was made by the JNU Student Union. The students were informed that such a protest outside the campus was not permitted by the JNU administration and were asked to restrict themselves to the campus. Despite talks and requests not to protest outside, around 400-500 students gathered and held a protest march. At approximately 3:20 PM, they left the main gate and marched outside," the police stated. On the other hand, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) condemned the alleged police brutality on the student protestors marching towards the Ministry of Education, demanding the implementation of the Rohith Act and the Vice-Chancellor's resignation. JNUSU further alleged that the injured students have been denied medical assistance.

Filmmaker James Cameron has written a letter arguing that if Netflix is successful in its bid for Warner Bros.' studio and streaming businesses, it could cause huge job loss, change the theatrical landscape and hurt the film export business, according to Variety. The 'Avatar' filmmaker sent his letter last week to Senator Mike Lee, chair of the Senate subcommittee on antitrust, and the letter was then recently obtained by CNBC. "I believe strongly that the proposed sale of Warner Brothers Discovery to Netflix will be disastrous for the theatrical motion picture business that I have dedicated my life's work to," Cameron wrote in the letter. "Of course, my films all play in the downstream video markets as well, but my first love is the cinema," as quoted by Variety. The filmmaker, best known for directing the blockbuster 'Avatar' franchise, cautioned that a contraction in big-budget film production would have sweeping consequences. He predicted that if the number of large-scale films declines, "Theaters will close. Fewer films will be made. The job losses will spiral." Cameron argued that Netflix's streaming-first business model conflicts with the traditional theatrical system. "The business model of Netflix is directly at odds with the theatrical film production and exhibition business, which employs hundreds of thousands of Americans," he wrote. "It is therefore directly at odds with the business model of the Warner Brothers movie division, one of the few remaining major movie studios," according to Variety. Responding to the concerns, Senator Lee said in a statement, "We have received outreach from actors, directors, and other interested parties about the proposed Netflix and Warner Brothers merger, and I share many of their concerns. I look forward to holding a follow-up hearing to further address these issues." Cameron also contends that exports of Hollywood films would suffer in a Netflix-Warners merger. "The U.S. may no longer lead in auto or steel manufacturing, but it is still the world leader in movies. That will change for the worse," according to Variety.

India has significantly increased its financial commitment to fighting climate change, with spending on climate action rising from 3.7 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) six years ago to nearly 5.6 per cent today. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman shared these figures while speaking at the 'Degrees of Instability: Climate Security in a Warming World' town hall in Munich, Germany, on Saturday. She emphasised that India is not merely waiting for international aid but is proactively investing its own resources to meet environmental goals. "India has increased its commitment to climate action. We were at something like 3.7 per cent of our GDP six years ago... but today, we are somewhere close to 5.6 per cent. So more than doubled in a matter of six years," the Finance Minister stated. She noted that while India continues to seek global technology and funds, it has moved forward with its own money to achieve its nationally determined commitments. She also highlighted the challenges faced by other regions, noting that many African countries may struggle to reach such high levels of spending due to their own economic limitations. Beyond spending, Sitharaman called for a balanced approach that focuses as much on resilience and adaptation as it does on emission control. She warned that failing to focus on adaptation could put human lives and livestock at risk. The Finance Minister argued that the global community must adopt a "polluter pays" principle, where the cost of climate action is shared fairly based on a country's historical contribution to emissions. "As much attention we give to emission control, we need to look at resilience and adaptation. Second, technologies will have to talk to each other. And third, differentiated treatment for paying for it. It cannot be that countries which have contributed less to emissions are made to pay equally," she said. Detailing India's domestic efforts, Sitharaman pointed out that the country is well ahead of its renewable energy targets, having achieved two-thirds of its commitments four years earlier than planned. She also mentioned that the Union Budget 2026-27 provides specific funding and incentives for carbon capture strategies. These technologies are being encouraged across the mainland and in remote areas to help businesses reduce their carbon footprint while supporting India's transition to a greener economy. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of reports indicating a sharp rise in missing persons cases in the national capital, after data released by the Delhi Police revealed that as many as 807 people went missing during the first two weeks of January 2026 alone. According to the data cited, 191 of the missing persons were minors, while 616 were adults. Of the total number of cases reported during the period, 235 individuals have been traced so far, whereas 572 people remain unaccounted for. Acting on the matter, the Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Government of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. The NHRC observed that the contents of the news report, if found to be true, raise serious concerns relating to potential violations of human rights. The Commission's action follows a media report published on February 5, 2026, which highlighted the scale of the issue. According to the data cited, a total of 24,508 people were reported missing in Delhi during 2025. Among them, nearly 60 per cent were women. While the police were able to trace 15,421 individuals, as many as 9,087 cases remain unresolved. The figures also point to a troubling trend involving teenagers. Reports indicate that more than 5,000 teenagers have been going missing in Delhi each year since 2016, including around 3,500 girls annually, underlining the vulnerability of minors and young women. Taking note of the figures, the NHRC said the matter requires serious scrutiny, as the reported numbers point to a potentially grave human rights concern. The Commission has sought a detailed report from the Delhi government and the city police to review the action taken to trace missing persons and to examine what further steps are being implemented to address the rising trend. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday asked Congress Assam Pradesh President and MP, Gaurav Gogoi, to answer to his wife's alleged links to Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, calling it a "matter of serious national security." Speaking to ANI, CM Sarma alleged that Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, was drawing a salary from Pakistan and passing on reports on political developments. He said, "He has to understand that in a matter of serious national security, and when it comes to Pakistan, you know about Operation Sindoor, Kargil, the wars we fought with Pakistan. I think you cannot divert this topic with casual remarks. You have to answer. Today you answer, or tomorrow you answer. You have to answer this." He claimed that Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi visited Pakistan nine times, and that the Congress MP also accompanied her on some of those visits. CM Sarma said, "Gaurav Gogoi's wife worked initially in Pakistan in a particular organisation. After marriage, she joined in India. But she continued to be managed by the Pakistani authority, and she used to get a salary from Pakistan through a pass-through mechanism. Sitting in India, taking a salary from an enemy country and submitting a period report on the political development in India, these are matters of great concern. Simultaneously, she visited Pakistan nine times from India. She also took Gaurav Gogoi to Pakistan." "The visa was given at the request of the Ministry of Interior (of Pakistan). He stayed there for 10 days. How can an MP from India be invited by the Ministry of Interior? How did he spend those 10 days in Pakistan? These are the questions we have asked. Apart from that, Gaurav Gogoi surrendered the Indian passports of both of his children and facilitated getting British passports. His wife already has a British passport. So, these are the questions we asked. I hope that Gogoi will come clean on these questions," the Assam Chief Minister added. This comes after Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a press conference, stated that the Congress leader attempted to legitimise the neighbouring country. He claimed that Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi worked in Pakistan from March 18, 2011, to March 17, 2012, and her family had close ties with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Meanwhile, Himanta defended his "Miyan Muslim" remark and told ANI, "I don't know which remark of mine offended Owaisi. I don't say anything about Muslims. I speak against the infiltrators coming from Bangladesh. He too should speak along with me. There are not enough resources for the people of India. How can we provide that to Bangladeshis?" Earlier today, Gaurav Gogoi refuted the allegations against his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, calling it a "super flop" press conference. In an X post, Gogoi hit back at Sarma's allegations, citing the Samay Parivartan Yatra, which Congress began to expose alleged corruption and communal politics by the BJP in the State. "I pity the journalists from Delhi and Assam who had to suffer the most flop press conference of the century. This was worse than a C-grade cinema. Most mindless and bogus points offered by the so-called political shrewd Chief Minister. This Super Flop is in contrast to our Xomoy Parivartan Yatra, which has been a hit in uncovering the 12,000 bighas of land occupied by the Chief Minister and his family members," the Congress MP wrote.Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide.
