The Assam government on Sunday lifted the ban on the mobile internet services, imposed after the violent protest in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong over the demands of eviction of settlers. Following the violence in which at least 173 personnel of the Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained injuries, Assam government invoked Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, prohibiting Internet/Mobile Data Services of all Mobile Service Providers in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong, with immediate effect on December 23. Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department of the Assam Government today issued a notification lifting the ban on mobile internet services, citing an improved and normalised law and order situation in the area. "All Mobile Service Providers operating in the districts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong are hereby directed to restore Internet/Mobile Data Services with effect from 8:00 AM on December 28," the order read. The escalation occurred after protesters, who were holding sit-in demonstrations demanding the eviction of illegal encroachers from the Village Grazing Reserve (VGR) and Professional Grazing Reserve (PGR) lands in the hilly district, set the house of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on fire. The protesters pelted stones and attacked security personnel, and forced the cops to blank fire to bring the situation under control in the Dongkamukam area near Kheroni in the West Karbi Anglong district. At least 173 personnel of the Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) sustained injuries during incidents on December 22-23 According to an Assam police post on X, 139 personnel were treated on the scene for injuries, while 33 were transported to various hospitals for further care. "173 personnel of the Assam Police and @crpfindia were injured in the incidents on 22-23 December 2025 under Kheroni PS under West Karbi Anglong. 139 received First Aid at the spot, while 33 were sent for treatment to various hospitals," the post added on X. Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired a meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati with representatives of various organisations representing the Karbi community, members of Karbi civil society, and functionaries of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. During the meeting, the Chief Minister held detailed discussions with the representatives on a range of issues, including the recent incident that occurred in the Kheroni area of West Karbi Anglong district. Briefing the media after the meeting, the Chief Minister stated that, regarding the VGR and PGR land issue currently before a Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will file an affidavit in the first week of January. "Simultaneously, Karbi civil society will also present its views as a party to the case. Considering the importance of the matter, the state government will request the court for an expeditious hearing and early verdict, following which appropriate action will be taken by the Government in accordance with the court's decision," the Chief Minister said. The Chief Minister further stated that all government offices currently located on VGR/PGR land in Kheroni will be relocated to alternative locations at the earliest. He also announced that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will immediately cancel the licences of all commercial establishments operating on VGR/PGR land. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. In a decisive boost to India's fight against organised crime and terror-linked networks, India on Friday launched its first-ever national-level 'Organised Crime Network Database' (OCND), a landmark initiative aimed at dismantling criminal syndicates that have repeatedly compromised internal security. Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the database in the 'Anti-Terror Conference-2025-- a two-day annual event being organised by the country's anti-terror unit, the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The database is AI-powered and designed to function as an intelligent analytical tool, enabling investigating officers to retrieve comprehensive information on organised criminals instantly. This database integrates First Information Reports (FIRs), charge sheets, dossiers, and other critical inputs related to organised criminals from across all states, making them accessible to investigating agencies in real time. The NIA developed the OCND in close collaboration with state police forces and the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), an integrated data-sharing platform that serves as a master database for counterterrorism and internal security under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), supporting law enforcement and intelligence agencies. "Organised crime networks, often operating across state borders and maintaining covert links with terror groups, have long exploited jurisdictional gaps to evade law enforcement. Recognising the gravity of the threat and aligned with the Narendra Modi government's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, the NIA developed the OCND in close coordination with State police forces and the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID)," some NIA officials told ANI. Officials noted that organised criminals are typically active in multiple states, resulting in fragmented information scattered across jurisdictions. "Complete details of their activities were not available with any single state police force, allowing criminals to exploit loopholes in the system," an NIA official said. To address this gap, the official said, the OCND integrates FIRs, charge sheets, dossiers and other critical inputs related to organised criminals from across all states and makes them accessible to investigating agencies in real time. "This real-time exchange of information will significantly strengthen coordination among state police forces in dealing with organised criminals." Another official said "this database is AI-powered which works like ChatGPT and provides all information about organised criminals to the investigation officers concerned immediately." Besides profile information, the official said, the database carries voice matching facility and fingerprint data of such organised criminals", helping out the investigation agencies in taking quick action against them. Officials said "this state-of-the-art database, which assists investigating officers, is an important step towards tackling organised crime and criminals." With the operationalisation of the OCND, the NIA will serve as a central facilitator, providing verified, actionable data on organised criminals to investigating agencies across the country. Officials described the platform as a critical force multiplier in India's effort to curb organised crime that fuels violence, terror financing and economic disruption.

Police have lodged an FIR at Nehru Colony police station in Dehradun, on Thursday, against Saharanpur resident Urmila Sanawar and former BJP MLA from Jwalapur, Haridwar, Suresh Rathore, in connection with the Ankita Bhandari murder case. The action was taken after former district panchayat member Aarti Gaur filed a complaint alleging that the accused made baseless and defamatory statements, attempting to tarnish her image, in a video circulating on social media. According to the police, an FIR has been registered under Section 67 of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, and Sections 308(7), 351(2), 352, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against the two accused. Earlier on Wednesday, BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt launched an attack on Congress, which kept raising the issue of a so-called "VIP" in the Ankita murder case, but backed out when asked to present evidence at the appropriate time. He stated that if Congress had been serious about the matter, it could have given its statement and evidence before the court. At that time, the DGP issued a public appeal, asking anyone with information about a "VIP" to come forward. He said, "No one did so then, nor is anyone doing so now. By indulging in unnecessary conspiracy theories around Ankita, Congress is also disrespecting the soul of the deceased girl." He further said, "A complaint has been filed against an unverified viral video, terming it as manipulated, yet Congress is attempting to use it as a political weapon. The woman whose audio has gone viral has a well-known record and is alleged to have political motives. Despite this, Congress is trying to create a controversy for political gain." Bhatt questioned the Congress leaders for making allegations without verifying the audio's authenticity, calling it yet another example of the height of their unethical politics. He said that Congress leaders should immediately issue a public apology for such irresponsible statements.Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide.
