India and England were to take on each other in the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford, Manchester from Friday, however, the Covid cases in the Indian camp meant that the visitors couldn't field a team.

"It's an evolving situation, it's a mess. And the only thing I can tell you is that this Test match... the final Test match is off. There won't be a Test match here at Old Trafford. This is the end of India's tour of England" Hussain said on Sky Sports.

"I have a lot of sympathy with the Indian players as they've had two physios (test positive) and the second one would have been treating all the players with some sore bodies ahead of a fifth Test match. You cannot do physiotherapy without close contact. Even those players have tested negative a couple of times now, the incubation period means they are worried that two or three days into the Test match they test positive and three or four players go down."

Hussain added that the BCCI was very concerned about the game. With cash-rich IPL less than ten days away, COVID-19 could cause some major trouble to the league.

"Initially, the BCCI was always very concerned about this Test match. They wanted everything moved to make sure the IPL is a huge financial issue hanging over the game, over Indian cricket. They have already moved it, then moved it half of it this time around. Of course, this is about the IPL, but this is about players who are thinking: ‘If I get down positive here now, today, I have to do another 10 days’,” Hussain said.

"I have to applaud what the players showed. There will be a lot of anger and I get that but what is shows is how well the game has coped things like this. How well players have coped. These guys are going from bubble to bubble, and from quarantine to quarantine… look what’s happened to Ben Stokes. The tight bubble is no longer sustainable,” the former England captain explained.

Will present great picture of Afghanistan in T20 World Cup: Mohammad Nabi

Leylah Fernandez may not feel the weight of expectation as she heads into the U.S. Open final but the Canadian teenager will have a chip on her shoulder put there by those who doubted her.

Dropped from Tennis Quebec`s development program when she was seven-years-old and told by teachers to forget becoming a professional and focus on school, Fernandez will have the last laugh on Saturday when faces fellow teen Emma Raducanu for a first Grand Slam title and a winner`s purse of $2.5 million.

"A lot of people doubted me, my family and my dreams," said Fernandez after knocking out second seed Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4.

"They kept saying `No`, that I`m not going to be a professional tennis player, that I should stop and just pursue going to school.

"I remember one teacher, which was actually very funny -- at the time it wasn`t, but now I`m laughing.

"She told me to stop playing tennis, you will never make it, and just focus on school."

Fernandez says she carries that rejection with her into every match and uses it as motivation, along with the other challenges her family faced along the road to helping her realise her dream.

Her father Jorge, an Ecuador-born soccer player who knew little about tennis, stepped in and became her coach, instilling in her an unshakable self-belief.

Ranked number 73 in the world at the start of the U.S. Open, most would have seen her bid to reach a Grand Slam final as `Mission Impossible`, but not Fernandez.

"My dad would tell me all the time, there`s no limit to my potential to what I can do," said Fernandez, who celebrated her 19th birthday on Monday. "Every day we just got to keep working hard, we got to keep going for it.

"Nothing is impossible. There`s no limit to what I can do."

The difficult times and determination to overcome are reflected in the fearless Canadian`s relentless attacking play.

Fernandez has also drawn strength and resolve from her mother and sister, who have been cheering her on from courtside seats while her father offered advice and inspiration from home.

"My mom had to go to California for a few years to support my family and I in the tennis world," said Fernandez.

"That few years were definitely hard for me because I needed a mom, I needed someone to be there for me through the age of 10-to-13.

"I`d barely see her at that time.

"Every time I saw her, it was like seeing a stranger but at the same time someone so familiar.

"I was just very lucky to have my mom here at this tournament cheering for me and having fun with me all this time.

"But we`ve gone through so many things together as a family."

Fernandez uses doubters as motivation to reach US Open final

British teen Emma Raducanu stunned the tennis world on Thursday by becoming the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final after beating Greece`s Maria Sakkari 6-1 6-4 in her U.S. Open semi-final on Thursday.

With British tennis royalty Tim Henman and Virginia Wade looking on, Raducanu fended off seven break points across her first two service games and capitalized on a trio of double faults from Sakkari on the way to a 5-0 lead in the first set.

Down a break in the second set, Sakkari then fought off five break points in a near 10-minute seventh game but the 18-year-old Raducanu would not be denied the victory and went on to seal the match and set up a final against 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

"Honestly I just can`t believe it. A shock. Crazy," she said. "To be in a Grand Slam final at this stage of my career, yeah, I have no words."

Playing in just her fourth tour-level tournament, Raducanu has not dropped a set in New York and completely outmatched 17th seed Sakkari, who reached the Roland Garros semis this year.

"Today was always going to be a very difficult match, to play against Maria Sakkari. She`s an unbelievable player, probably one of the best athletes out there on tour," she said.

"I knew before the match I was going to have to play some of my best tennis if I wanted a chance."

The Greek had 33 unforced errors in the one hour and 24-minute match and struggled mightily with her first serve.

"It`s tough to get yourself back in the match when nothing is going right and everything is going very good for the opponent," Sakkari told reporters.

She also had to leave the court early in the match because her skirt was not the right size.

"I took the wrong size of my skirt. It was a size larger," added Sakkari. "I could not play. It was falling. I was pretty quick, though."

UNBELIEVABLE SUPPORT

Raducanu, who electrified British tennis with her run to the fourth round of Wimbledon, has been embraced by the rowdy crowds in New York and beamed up at the stands inside Arthur Ashe Stadium after closing out the match with a forehand winner.

"Since I`ve been in New York for my first round qualies match I`ve had unbelievable support in New York and you guys have made me feel right at home," she said.

"I was just so excited to come out here and play in front of you guys."

Raducanu said she had a packed schedule ahead of the U.S. Open and was not sure how she would play.

"In a way my tennis level has surprised me in the way that I`ve managed step up against some of the best players in the world," she added.

A win in Saturday`s final would see a jump to number 24 in the rankings for Raducanu, who left school this summer and parted ways with prominent coach Nigel Sears after Wimbledon in favour of her youth coach Andrew Richardson.

Raducanu now has the chance to become the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Wade won Wimbledon in 1977, though she said she knew little of the reaction to her performances back home.

"I`m honestly just here physically and also I give my phone away, like I don`t really check it," she said. "But yeah, I`m very appreciative of all the support."

IND vs ENG, 5th Test - Another member of India's support staff tests positive for Covid-19: Reports

European Leagues, the body representing professional club competitions on the continent, has firmly and unanimously opposed any proposals to stage the World Cup every two years.

European Leagues is the latest among a number of stakeholders in the game who have expressed concerns over FIFA`s plans for a biennial World Cup.

"The Leagues will work together with the other stakeholders to prevent football governing bodies to take unilateral decisions that will harm domestic football which is the foundation of our industry," the association said in a statement on Thursday.

FIFA, acting on a suggestion made by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation earlier this year, is conducting a feasibility study into whether it can go ahead with the ambitious idea of a biennial World Cup.

"New competitions, revamped competitions or expanded competitions for club and national team football both at continental level and/or at global level are not the solutions to the current problems of our game in an already congested calendar," added the European Leagues statement https://europeanleagues.com/european-leagues-statement-on-football-calendar.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday said there were too many "meaningless international games" and such a system was unhealthy for the sport, adding that a new men`s calendar is likely to be introduced by the end of 2024 when the current cycle ends.

European club body opposes biennial World Cup plans

Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket Kumar Sangakkara wants to see different players of his side becoming match-winners in different games as they look forward to the resumption of the IPL season in the UAE.

The Royals, who are placed fifth in the IPL points table, will begin the second leg of IPL by taking on Punjab Kings on September 21.

Commenting on what he expects from his players as they aim to make it to the playoffs, Sangakkara said, "What I want to see from them is their best efforts - competing as hard and for as long as possible to create opportunities to take games by the scruff of their neck and win them - that's the real key.

"If one player can win us the odd game here and there, different players become those match-winners in different games, and that's really what you're looking for in terms of formulating a side winning," he said in an RR release.

Having stayed in touch with the team during the off-season, Sangakkara said he got a lot of feedback from the players.

"I expect them to always challenge the plans we set for them and question as to why they're doing something, or if they have a better alternative. I think that's the real way we can challenge each other as coaches and players to get better," said the 43-year-old Sri Lankan legend.

"And I'm genuinely very happy to note that our players are excelling at that. I really love the energy and the attitude of all the players at the Royals, especially the younger Indian guys, who are all very keen to learn and very confident in their abilities."

The former captain is under quarantine in his hotel room here with his family.

"The first phase of the season had both positives and negatives for our team. It was a bit of a mixed bag with some injuries and pull-outs, but those are very understandable situations where you must support the players."

Players like Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer have pulled out due to different reasons, including injury-related. Sangakkara referred Jaydev Unadkat as a great example of hard work and determination.

"Earlier this year, I was particularly impressed with JD (Jaydev Unadkat), because we all know that he has gone through some difficult phases in his career but I think he really stepped up during the first phase of IPL 2021.

"His bowling was outstanding, and that just goes to show that you can come back from a setback and start doing well if you put in the work."

On Sanju Samson's captaincy, Sangakkara said, "I really think Sanju Samson does well when he's Sanju Samson. He's a bright young man. He's got a balanced head on his shoulders, and I like the way he keeps everything very simple, clear and direct.

"His captaincy was very impressive given he had to take over at a tough time without a full-strength squad."
