<p>A BCCI official, on Thursday (December 2), confirmed to ANI that both boards are in constant touch and soon a decision will be taken keeping the safety of players in mind.</p>

<p>"We are discussing to push back the series by a week due to the threat of Omicron COVID variant and we are awaiting the Indian government nod, both boards are in constant touch and everything is being discussed. The health and safety of our players is of utmost importance," the senior official told ANI.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports had made it clear that the Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI need to consult the Indian government before sending the national side to the rainbow nation, where a new COVID-19 variant has already emerged.</p>

<p>"Not only BCCI, but every board should also consult the Indian government before sending the team to a country where a new COVID-19 variant has emerged. It is not right to send the team to a country where there is a threat, if BCCI consults us we will deliberate on that," Thakur had told ANI.</p>

<p>India and New Zealand played out a riveting draw in the first Test at Green Park, Kanpur. Ahead of the second and final Test, in Mumbai, Team India will be strengthened by the return of regular captain Virat Kohli. While the home side will look to win the final Test and claim the two-match series, they will also hope for their two senior pros in the form of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara to end their respective dry spells with the bat.</p>

<p>Both Pujara and Rahane failed to get going in the series opener. The eight existing IPL franchises released their set of retained players as many established names found themselves being retained, by their respective teams, whereas some big names have been released and will proceed to the mega auction, to be held in early 2022. For the unversed, Dhoni agreed to be the second-retention choice for CSK, for 12 crores (120 million), whereas all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was retained as the Yellow Army's top-choice player, for 16 crores (160 million).</p>
