Ever since a global pandemic swept the entire planet, we, as a human race have been forced to re-evaluate our working habits. Work from home has become a mass phenomenon and as the economies are opening up, hybrid work culture is slowly becoming popular.

Now, a study conducted by Stanford University has revealed that hybrid work culture has reduced 'Churn Rate', also referred to as 'Attrition Rate' by 35 per cent at large technology firms.

'Attrition rate' is defined as the rate at which employees leave their companies. The trial was conducted over 1,612 employees of Trip.com from departments such as engineering, marketing and finance between 2021 and 2022, according to Nicholas Bloom, co-author of the study.

Reportedly, those having birthdays on odd-numbered dates were given the option to work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays while others had to punch in at the office full-time.&nbsp;

The findings of the paper prompted Trip.com to roll out a company-wide hybrid work model. The study results showed that employees working from the comfort of homes worked fewer hours but increased their work output on the days they were at the office.&nbsp;

Statistically speaking, employees worked 80 minutes less when working remote and 30 minutes extra on other work days and weekends,&nbsp;

One of the biggest takeaways from the study was that employees working from home reported higher productivity than their office counterparts; with an eight per cent increase in line of codes written, despite working less. &nbsp;

The work from Home employees emulated their habit of increased individual messaging and video call communication when working in the office, leading to better coordination amongst their peers.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that the EU had brought this proposition last Wednesday and asked the EU countries to use 15 per cent less gas, compared to their average over the last five years, from August to March.&nbsp;

The gas conundrum

Planning to take that sweet after-lunch nap or a quick power nap before going to the gym? You might want to wait, as a new study published in Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association has revealed that people who often take a nap have higher chances of developing blood pressure and having a stroke.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the study used data from over 360,000 participants and reached the conclusion. Blood, urine, and saliva samples in addition to information about the lifestyles of the participants were collected for the study.&nbsp;

Accordingly, individuals who took a frequent nap had a 12 per cent higher chance of developing blood pressure issues while it also increased the risk of stroke by 24 per cent. The study also noted that for individuals younger than 60, napping frequently increased the chance of developing high blood pressure by at least 20 per cent, when compared to non-napping people.&nbsp;

Poor night's sleep means frequent afternoon naps

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, experts remarked that taking more naps was intricately connected to not getting a proper night's sleep. &nbsp;

“Poor sleep at night is associated with poorer health, and naps are not enough to make up for that. This study echoes other findings that generally show that taking more naps seems to reflect an increased risk for problems with heart health and other issues.” said one of the experts.&nbsp;

The study leaned towards the side of sleep behaviour experts who argue that napping is a warning of an underlying sleep disorder in some individuals.&nbsp;

However, it is also pertinent to note that the majority of the people who took part in the study and took frequent naps&nbsp;smoked cigarettes, drank daily, snored, had insomnia and reported being an evening person.

Meanwhile, the German charity Sea-Watch and its Sea-Watch 3 vessel, famous for conducting such rescue operations also managed to protect 444 migrants who were trying to cross the Sea on overcrowded small boats. SOS Mediterannee, with the help of its Ocean Viking ship, conducted the search and rescue operation near the Libyan coast. Reportedly, 87 migrants, including 57 minors without any parents were rescued. None of them had any kind of life jackets for protection. According to Italy Navy, while some migrants were attempting to flee to Europe in search of a better life and opportunities, others were fleeing conflict, violence or persecution. Migrants and their attempts to enter Europe increase during the Summer months as better weather allows the migrants to hop on the dangerous boats, which otherwise get capsized in the rough weather. According to a United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) report, 3,231 migrants had died or gone missing whilst undertaking the treacherous sea journey. The report showed that in 2021, 1,924 people were reported dead or missing on the Central and Western Mediterranean routes, while another 1,153 perished on the North African maritime route to the Canary Islands. However, the ground reality is different. The authorities, which includes the Hospitals, turn down unmarried people who cannot provide a marriage license while attempting to avail such services.&nbsp;Teresa has stated that she plans to appeal against the ruling.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Reportedly, Uber has confessed to the US prosecutors to avoid being levelled with criminal charges, as part of a settlement.&nbsp;When quizzed about how Uber had escaped the criminal charges, Stephanie Hinds, United States Attorney for the Northern District of California stated that the new management of Uber, that took charge in the aftermath of the hacking incident cooperated properly and made informed disclosures.

Furthermore, the new management in 2018 committed FTC to maintain an extensive privacy program for the next twenty years.&nbsp; 
Reportedly, in late 2016, two hackers stole personal data, including phone numbers, email addresses, and names of 57 million Uber&nbsp;passengers, in addition to the driver’s licences of over 600,000 drivers working for the company.&nbsp;

Uber admits concealing the 2016 data leak of 57 million passengers; avoids criminal charges

To prevent the country from tumbling into a total crisis of defaulting on loans, the Pakistan cabinet on Thursday issued an ordinance named Inter-Governmental Commercial Transactions Ordinance 2022, that will allow Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government to sell state assets to foreign entities and governments without any checks.

Reportedly, the state will not be liable to follow any procedure and the regulators will not be allowed to keep tabs on the government’s ‘selling’ business. Such is the overarching range of power under the ordinance that no one can challenge the government’s decision&nbsp;in the courts or in front of any investigation agencies. However, a final hurdle remains as President Arif Alvi is yet to sign the dotted lines of the ordinance.

The ordinance has been brought in mainly to sell stakes of oil and gas companies to the UAE. Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Oil Gas Development Company Limited and Mari Gas Company are some of the companies on the radar of the government to be sold to foreign companies.&nbsp;

Reportedly, in May, UAE had outrightly refused to lend Pakistan cash deposits after Islamabad failed to repay the loans.&nbsp;

At the time, UAE had instructed Pakistan to open its companies for investment from the West Asian country. By selling the stakes to UAE, Pakistan is expected to raise anywhere close to $2 billion to $2.5 billion, which may help it avoid default.&nbsp;

IMF to help Pakistan, subject to few pre-conditions

The cash-strapped country has been going through its worst financial crisis in recent times and needs cash liquidity on an almost urgent basis. The Pakistan rupee has fallen 8.3 per cent this week alone, which is being dubbed the steepest fall since 1998.

According to several estimates, the neighbouring country of India needs at least $41 billion in the next 12 months to fund debt repayments and boost foreign exchange reserves.

Standing on the verge of bankruptcy, Pakistan, however, was given a glimmer of hope earlier this month when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) decided to resume a 2019 signed $6 billion loan programme.&nbsp;

However, IMF has kept a few pre-conditions before it opens the coffers to bail out the country. Reportedly, Pakistan will have to raise $4 billion from friendly countries to receive the next tranche of payment.&nbsp;

Such is the overarching range of power under the ordinance that no one can challenge the government’s decision in the courts or in front of any investigation agencies. However, a final hurdle remains as President Arif Alvi is yet to sign the dotted lines of the ordinance. The ordinance has been brought in mainly to sell stakes of oil and gas companies to the UAE. Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Oil Gas Development Company Limited and Mari Gas Company are some of the companies on the radar of the government to be sold to foreign companies. Reportedly, in May, UAE had outrightly refused to lend Pakistan cash deposits after Islamabad failed to repay the loans. At the time, UAE had instructed Pakistan to open its companies for investment from the West Asian country. By selling the stakes to UAE, Pakistan is expected to raise anywhere close to $2 billion to $2.5 billion, which may help it avoid default. The module weighing 23 tonnes at the launch was boosted into the sky using a Long March-5B Y3 rocket from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in south China’s Hainan province.&nbsp;

One of the engineers associated with the project was quoted as saying by Chinese state media, “This is the first time the Long March-5B rocket will undertake a rendezvous and docking mission. It will send the lab module to dock with the core module.”

The Wentian module was a working cabin that includes three sleeping areas and one sanitary area. It is expected to accommodate six astronauts at a time, particularly when the interchange of astronauts from different space missions happens.

Moreover, Wentian has a flexible solar panel on it that will generate an average of 430 kiloWatt hours per day. It is estimated that the power generation of Wentian could have easily supported the power demand of an average Beijing household for more than a month.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the three Chinese astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang, and Cai Xuzhe living in the space station, situated in Earth’s low orbit&nbsp;will observe the module’s arrival. Afterwards, the three will&nbsp;become the first crew members to float into the station’s new module.

China’s third and final module for the space station named&nbsp;Mengtian&nbsp;module is expected to be launched later this year in October. While the Wentian and Mengtian modules will be on the side, the Tianhe module will be in the centre, completing the T-shaped space station.

It is pertinent to note that the International Space Station (ISS) has whopping 16 modules. With China nearing the completion of its space station, ISS and Tiangong will be the two active space stations in Earth’s orbit. The former is expected to retire by the end of this decade.

India is expected to launch its own station by 2030, as announced by former ISRO chairman K Sivan in 2019.&nbsp;

China launches its Wentian module, approaches completion of its space station

Three individuals named Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, and Jefferson da Silva Lima, arrested for the murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira in the jungles of Amazon, Brazil last month, have been booked by the authorities.

According to the Brazilian public prosecutors, Dom (57) and Bruno (41) were killed on the boat on the Itaquai River whilst returning to the city. Reportedly, Bruno was killed after three bullets were pumped into his body, including one in the back; meaning, he had no possibility of defending himself. Meanwhile, Dom was only killed because he was privy to Bruno's murder. "Dom was killed simply because he was with Bruno, in order to ensure impunity for the previous crime." said the prosecutors. As reported previously by WION, Dom and Bruno were on an expedition in the remote region of Javari Valley, a remote rainforest area near the Colombia-Peru border. It is believed to be the habitat of the world's biggest population of uncontacted indigenous people. However, lately, the region has turned into a hotbed of criminal activities as illegal fishermen, gold-diggers, miners and loggers fight to usurp the gifts of the Amazon. Dom was researching for a book Dom had been conducting research for a book titled, 'How to save the Amazon' and Bruno was helping him communicate with the local people. It was the second time these two had paired up, having previously worked together in 2018. However, on the way back to the city, the duo stumbled upon the suspects, who were illegally fishing in the area and asked for a photograph. Enraged that they would be exposed, the killers shot both of them down and buried their bodies, to escape the arrest. It was only after 10 days that the bodies were recovered amid a huge uproar in the international community.
