Pacific Gas &amp; Electric (PG&amp;E), one of the largest companies to provide electricity to more than 5.5 million customers of northern California tweeted a list of measures that residents could employ to conserve energy.&nbsp;

With thermometers logging highs of over 110 Fahrenheit (43 Celsius) in some places, forecasters have issued an excessive heat warning for most of California, as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona.

Such has been the sweltering heat that&nbsp;two people died on Monday after another wildfire broke out in the southern part of the state.&nbsp;

The fire, nicknamed Fairview Fire started on Monday, shortly after 2 PM, and rapidly grew from there. According to reports, the fire had spread to an area of over 2,000 acres, engulfing the city of Hemet.&nbsp;

United Airlines, one of the largest airline companies in the USA, has issued a warning to&nbsp;Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that it will suspend its services at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) if it does not receive permits for additional flights.

Reportedly,&nbsp;United Chief Executive Scott Kirby wrote a letter to FAA and its acting&nbsp;Administrator Billy Nolen, where in clear terms he demanded the needful.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that ever since the airport reopened after a COVID-19-induced hiatus in 2021, United Airlines is only flying twice daily to&nbsp;San Francisco and Los Angeles from the airport. According to data, JFK is the busiest New York airport and a major airline only operating a small percentage of flights at the airport is not good for the business.

However, FAA took a measured stance in response to the letter and asserted that it "must consider airspace capacity and runway capacity to assess how changes would affect flights at nearby airports. Any additional slots at JFK would follow the FAA's well-established process of awarding them fairly and to increase competition."

Reportedly, a team of researchers at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador recorded songs first heard from the humpback whales off the coast of eastern Australia. Fast forward a few years and the same song was picked up all the way in Ecuador, suggesting that the voice travelled across the South Pacific Ocean.

&nbsp;“Half the globe is now vocally connected for whales. And that’s insane,” Ellen Garland, author of the study and a marine biologist at the University of St. Andrews was quoted as saying by the New York Times.&nbsp;

Fascinatingly, the songs sung by the humpback whale may change over time. The authors of the study attributed the change to two different phenomenons viz. progressive cultural evolution and cultural revolution.

In the first category, the songs follow the basic evolutionary process wherein different whales subtract, add or delete their units and phrases in the song. The little changes in each iteration of the song slowly lead to a completely different version that then spreads around in the colony.

In the second category, a neighbouring population comes around with its novel song and the existing whale population quickly laps it up.&nbsp;

Researchers cited an example of a male song on the east coast of Australia singing a completely different song compared to the local whales. However, it matched the song sung on the west coast.&nbsp;

Within two years, all males month the east coast started singing the same song, suggesting that the cultural revolution amongst the whales was much more rapid than we had thought of previously.&nbsp;

“These really rapid cultural changes are not seen in any other animal species, it’s happened so fast.” added Garland.&nbsp;

Garland also asserted that these songs travelled when neighbouring groups of whales passed within an acoustic range of each other.&nbsp;

This passing usually happens when whales are leaving their breeding grounds and migrating to foraging grounds.&nbsp;

However, it is still unclear what the songs stand for. Whether the male whales use it as a mating call with females or to mediate male-to-male interaction or as a multi-message signal, it remains shrouded in clouds of mystery.&nbsp;

Almost 60 per cent of the population has no social protection coverage against normal life events such as pregnancy, child-raising, sickness, disability, unemployment or simply getting old,” said Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, executive secretary of ESCAP. The vulnerability due to lack of social protection has far-reaching consequences. 85 million unprotected people have been pushed into extreme poverty, only managing on less than a meagre income of $1.9 per day. "During the pandemic, the lack of affordable health care and social protection contributed to pushing 243 million people into poverty," added the report. "The region is highly exposed to climate-induced natural disasters with detrimental welfare consequences for workers, as jobs disappear and businesses relocate." Meanwhile, Apple's competitors viz. Facebook and Google saw a 3 per cent and 1.7 per cent dip in the number of mobile apps advertising respectively. The study makes it clear that more and more advertisers are willing to spend big bucks to advertise on App Store, in addition to Apple News and Stocks. Advertisers allocated almost 15 per cent of their ad budget to Apple while both Google and Facebook saw a decline. The change in policy meant that companies like Facebook found it more difficult to track users on the vast realms of the internet. Moreover, buoyant by its advertising revenue, Apple is planning to add more advertisements to its first-party apps that come pre-installed on iPhone. According to tech reports, Apple has already internally tested the ads on its Maps, Books, and Podcasts. If the Cupertino-based company rolls out the ad feature on these apps, it could very well take its advertising business revenue into double digits. Look, the worst is still to come,” said Klaus-Dieter Maubach, Uniper CEO. Adding that the wholesale prices had shot exponentially, Maubach called for an open discussion amongst the stakeholders. “What we see on the wholesale market is 20 times the price that we have seen two years ago. 20 times. That is why I think we need to have really an open discussion with everyone taking responsibility on how to fix that,” It is pertinent to note that Uniper, Germany's biggest importer of gas has been hit hard by the reduction in gas supplies from Russia. The company was in such dire straits that the German government in July had to bail out the company with a $15.24 billion bailout package. However, after the G7 group of nations reached a consensus on price capping, Kremlin quickly announced that new leaks had been discovered in the pipeline, leading to an indefinite halt. Earlier today, Gazprom stated that the resumption of the pipeline depended on Seimens, the German company. When asked when the pipeline would resume pumping gas again, Gazprom's Deputy Chief Executive Vitaly Markelov on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in the far-east city of Vladivostok stated, "You should ask Siemens.
