<p>A day after Donald Trump claimed that 'even' former New York governor Andrew Cuomo handled the coronavirus pandemic better than California Governor Ron DeSantis, the latter has hit back.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>DeSantis ripped into Trump by saying the claim was "very bizarre" as Cuomo was involved in the infamous nursing home scandal.</p>

<p>“First of all, Florida had less excess mortality than California or New York. Part of that is because states like California had excess mortality derived from the lockdown policy, which is really, really avoidable mortality," said DeSantis in an interview with&nbsp;<em>The Daily Wire's</em>&nbsp;Ben Shapiro.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“But if he thinks Cuomo handled it better, that’s an indication if something like this were to happen again, he would double down and do what he did in March of 2020,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We all have to sit here today in 2023, look back on March of 2020 and say, 'Faucism was wrong. Faucism was destructive. Faucism has set us on this path with the CARES Act and the Fed printing money, creating inflation, and creating some of the economic problems that we have today."</p>

<p>"So, if you could do it again, would he do the same thing?" DeSantis added. "I sure hope not."</p>

<p>On Thursday, in an election video campaign, Trump said Florida had one of the highest numbers of deaths from COVID-19 in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“How about the fact that he had the third most deaths of any state having to do with the China virus or COVID? Even Cuomo did better, he was number four,” Trump claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, DeSantis turned the tide when he asked if Trump would have doubled down on Cuomo's plan if he was given a do-over. During the early stages of the pandemic in March 2020, the democrat leader issued a highly troublesome executive order that forced nursing homes to admit COVID-19 patients so that hospital space could be freed and numbers not look catastrophic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the move severely backfired as the senior citizens - termed the most vulnerable due to the virus, contracted it and died en masse. The policy remained in effect till May 10 before it was quietly withdrawn but not before it had caused the damage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a study by Empire Centre for Public Policy, Cuomo's policy was possibly responsible for more than '1,000 death' as it allowed COVID-19 to spread among vulnerable seniors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The New York State Health Department in a scathing report found that Cuomo had 'misled the public' and reported less death to save his image.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“While the Department’s duty is to act solely to promote public health, we determined that, rather than providing accurate and reliable information during a public health emergency, the Department instead conformed its presentation to the Executive’s narrative, often presenting data in a manner that misled the public,” read the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Archaeologists in China have made a stunning discovery. They unearthed a World War II "horror bunker" where the Japanese conducted frightening human experiments and gathered data, according to an SCMP report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bunker has been found in northeast China, near the city of Anda in Heilongjiang province. The site was reportedly used by the infamous Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Army which conducted terrifying germ warfare experiments on humans between 1935 and 1945.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Historical records show Unit 731's experiments at the Anda site included infecting prisoners with deadly diseases and testing new biological weapons. Some of the most gruesome studies were conducted in underground bunkers designed to contain and control the spread of infectious agents," the publication noted, referring to the&nbsp;official report that was published in "Northern Cultural Relics" journal.&nbsp;</p>

Notably, the US knew about the inhumane experiments and Japan was granted immunity after its surrender in World War II. Declassified documents in the 1990s revealed that US authorities were aware of the programme and that the data from the Anda facility was&nbsp;used in biological warfare development at Fort Detrick in Maryland.</p>

<p>"PM Albanese and I have discussed in Quad Summit, about the peace in the region. We have discussed issues in the Indo-Pacific region," said PM Modi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kwatra added that the two leaders "spoke about free, open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific"&nbsp;and how India and Australia could work together.&nbsp;The two sides signed off saying they wanted to amplify and harness the opportunities but also to take active steps to mitigate the challenges that arise in the region.</p>

<p>To significantly expand bilateral trade ties, the two PMs decided to focus on a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).</p>

<p>Former foreign minister and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi was rearrested by Punjab Police from outside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail and whisked away to an unknown location, minutes after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered his release on Tuesday (May 23).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The IHC had ordered the release of the PTI vice chairman after he submitted an undertaking in front of Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb that he would refrain from creating agitation and inciting party workers, according to local media reports. He had been arrested in cases related to riots and arsons in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.</p>

<p>Prior to being rearrested, Qureshi encouraged the party workers to continue their struggle for 'true freedom.' He also asserted that he was not leaving the party, contrary to rumours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As a foreign minister of Pakistan, I defended Pakistan's interests at every forum. I have been in practical politics for 40 years," he said.</p>

We are now being governed by law of the jungle, might is right and the only thing standing in its way is our judiciary. The constitution is being brazenly violated along with SC rulings. <p>After hearing arguments from both sides, the court extended the former prime minister's bail. Judge Abbas also instructed the joint investigation team (JIT) to inform the court how they wanted Khan to join the probe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, Khan had predicted there was an 80 per cent chance that he would be arrested by the authorities when he goes to court in Islamabad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“On Tuesday, I’m going to appear before the court in Islamabad for various bails and there are 80 per cent chances that I will be arrested,” said Imran in an interview.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The combined total proceeds were determined by a rigorous and competitive auction which maximises value for the estate and minimizes the remaining duration of the Company’s restructuring," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prior to filing bankruptcy in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the company laid off roughly 85 per cent of its 750 employees. According to reports, the remaining employees will be laid off within the next week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At this stage, we believe that the Chapter 11 process represents the best path forward to identify and finalise an efficient and value-maximising sale," Virgin Orbit CEO Dan Hart said in a statement at the time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Virgin Orbit went public in 2021 as an extension of Branson's space tourism firm Virgin Galactic, which was formed in 2017. The company undertook its sixth mission in January with its centrepiece LauncherOne rocket. <p>JPMorgan Chase has hit back at the US Virgin Islands government after the latter brought in a lawsuit accusing the banking giant of empowering disgraced paedophile Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of teenage girls.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lawyers representing the bank in the Manhattan federal court said the Virgin Islands was complicit in Epstein's act and that high-ranking officials of the country were bought off by him.</p>

<p>“He gave them money, advice, influence, and favours. In exchange, they shielded and even rewarded him,” providing lucrative tax breaks worth millions of dollars, they wrote.</p>

<p>“For two decades, and for long after JPMC exited Epstein as a client, the entity that most directly failed to protect public safety and most actively facilitated and benefited from Epstein’s continued criminal activity was the plaintiff in this case — the USVI government itself," the lawyers added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reflecting on the statements from the defence,&nbsp;the&nbsp;US Virgin Islands attorney general’s office said it was an attempt to deflect the blame.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is an obvious attempt to shift blame away from JPMorgan Chase, which had a legal responsibility to report the evidence in its possession of Epstein’s human trafficking, and failed to do so," read the statement.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase</strong></h2>

<p>The Virgin Islands government sued the bank&nbsp;in December last year, alleging that it knew about Epstein's predatory behaviour. It added that the bank turned a blind eye to evidence of human trafficking for over a decade as Epstein's account and the clients he brought to the bank made him extremely valuable.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, US Virgin Islands subpoenaed documents from billionaire Elon Musk&nbsp;as part of its lawsuit against the bank.&nbsp;Google co-founder Larry Page was also to be served the same legal document but the government failed to locate him.</p>

<p>The government said it had been unable to locate Page, who co-founded and co-owns Alphabet Inc, despite good faith attempts, which included hiring an investigative firm to search public record databases.</p>

<p>Epstein was accused of sexually exploiting dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14, at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida between 2002 and 2005.</p>

<p>However, the majority of his sexual exploits took place on the&nbsp;72-acre Little St. James Island which he purchased&nbsp;in 1998 for $7.95 million. He later bought the 160-acre Great St. James Island for $20 million in 2016.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Epstein was convicted in Florida in 2008 of paying young girls for massages but served just 13 months in jail under a secret plea deal. He died under mysterious circumstances at&nbsp;the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York in 2019, with the authorities terming it a 'suicide'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif in a televised&nbsp;address on Wednesday said that former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party could be banned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asif said the government is considering the proposition as PTI and its members had attacked the "very basis of the state".&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is under consideration to ban PTI," said Asif, adding, "The PTI has attacked the very basis of the state, that never happened before. It can't be tolerated."</p>

<p>Talking about the violence that erupted in the aftermath of Imran's arrest earlier this month, Asif said,&nbsp;“Whatever happened on May 9 wasn’t spontaneous. It was pre-planned, so in this background there are chances we consider the&nbsp;ban.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Experts have warned that Asif's statement has the potential of further deepening the political divide in the country. If the government does go ahead with the decision, it could set the stage for a civil war.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>PTI in doldrums</strong></h2>

<p>The statement by Asif comes a day after PTI Vice Chairman&nbsp;Shah Mahmood Qureshi was rearrested by Punjab Police from outside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail and whisked away to an unknown location, minutes after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered his release.</p>

<p>The IHC had ordered the release of the PTI vice chairman after he submitted an undertaking in front of Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb that he would refrain from agitation and inciting party workers, according to local media reports. He had been arrested in cases related to riots and arsons in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Imran's close aide and former human rights minister&nbsp;Shireen Mazari resigned from the party after she was arrested by the police over the recent violence.</p>

<p>"Not only the May 9-10 violence, but I’ve always condemned every kind of violence especially against state institutions and symbols like the General Headquarters, Supreme Court and Parliament,” she stated.&nbsp;</p>
