The US&nbsp;will reopen four legal US-Mexico border crossings on Thursday as high levels of illegal&nbsp;immigration&nbsp;have receded and freed up personnel, U.S. border authorities said on Tuesday.

The US&nbsp;will resume operations at an international bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas, two crossings in Arizona and another near San Diego, California, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a press release, adding that it will continue to prioritize border security "as necessary."

US&nbsp;border authorities struggled in December to process migrants as apprehensions reached nearly 11,000 in a single day, which several current and former officials said was near or at a record high.

Lawmakers remain in talks over a possible deal that would combine increased border security measures with foreign aid, including military funding for Ukraine, U.S. officials said.

"We gotta do something. They ought to give me the money I need to protect the border," US&nbsp;President Joe Biden told reporters on his arrival at the White House on Tuesday evening, apparently referring to members of Congress.

Mexican and US officials pledged last week to work together more closely to tackle record migration at their shared border after top US officials travelled to Mexico to meet with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

Mexican officials have stepped up&nbsp;immigration&nbsp;enforcement in recent weeks, including moving migrants to southern Mexico and resuming deportation flights to Venezuela, a senior US&nbsp;official said during a call with reporters on Tuesday, requesting anonymity as a condition of the briefing.

Mexico on Tuesday evening cheered the reopening of the border crossings.

"This will benefit the economies of both countries," Mexico's foreign ministry, which had previously called for the reopening of crossings between the two nations, said in a statement.

US&nbsp;border authorities arrested an average of 6,400 migrants per day over the past week, according to an internal U.S. government report reviewed by Reuters, a steep decline from the levels before Christmas.

A separate US&nbsp;official on the call cautioned that migrant crossings have historically dropped between Christmas and New Year's Day.

"We have seen over the last year periods of increased encounters and periods of decreased encounters," the official said. "We will continue to stand ready to respond to these kinds of surges."

The dramatic videos which were recorded by people inside the burning aircraft gave the world a glimpse of the terrifying scenes the passengers endured.

<h2>Passengers say 'it was chaos'</h2>

Speaking to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, a 17-year-old passenger - identified as Anton Deibe from Sweden - said, "The entire cabin was filled with smoke within a few minutes." Deibe was flying with his parents and sister.

"The entire cabin was filled with smoke within minutes. We threw ourselves down on the floor. Then the emergency doors were opened and we threw ourselves at them. The smoke in the cabin stung like hell. It was&nbsp;hell. We have no idea where we are going so we just ran out into the field. It was chaos," the passenger added.&nbsp;

Another passenger said that he felt a very “warm sensation” on the left side of his face after the collision. &nbsp;

Meanwhile,&nbsp;59-year-old passenger Satoshi Yamake said he felt the flight had "tilted to the side and felt a big bump" just after the initial collision.

An unnamed passenger said that they felt a "bump, like the aircraft was colliding with something when touching down. I saw a spark outside the window and the cabin was filled with smoke".

Speaking to Kyodo News, one of the passengers said that he felt "a boom like we had hit something and jerked upward the moment we landed".

A female passenger stated that it was dark inside&nbsp;as the fire intensified after landing. "It was getting hot inside the plane, and I thought, to be honest, I wouldn't survive," she said while speaking to the Japanese broadcaster NHK.

As per another passenger, the plan of escaping the flight was made more difficult because only one set of doors was used. "An announcement said doors in the back and middle could not be opened. So everyone disembarked from the front," he said.&nbsp;

Monday's quake of magnitude 7.6 was centred near Noto, which is about 300 kilometres from Tokyo on the opposite coast. Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas were shaken by more aftershocks on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The heavy rains have also raised fears of landslides that could further hinder efforts to rescue many more people still trapped under rubble.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of the major quake, the rescue attempts have been hampered by severed roads, damaged infrastructure, and the remote location of the hardest-hit districts. The exact extent of damage and casualties is unknown even two days after the quake.&nbsp;

On January 1, the Noto Peninsula was worst hit by the 7.5-magnitude quake, with port towns such as Wajima and Suzu resembling war zones with streets of mud, flattened houses and sunken boats.&nbsp;

Relief officials handed out water, blankets, food and other supplies. People are being shifted to safer places. A 75-year-old Yoko Demura said from a shelter in the city of Nanao, "I can never go back there. It's unlivable now." Demura's home was reduced to rubble.&nbsp;

"It makes me sad and I will miss it," she told the news agency AFP.&nbsp;

Some people are reported missing and search dogs joined military personnel and firefighters who are trying to find them, although the exact number is unclear.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters: "More than 40 hours have passed. This is a race against time, and I feel that we are at a critical moment. We have received reports many people are still waiting for rescue under collapsed buildings."&nbsp;

<h2>'No houses standing'</h2>

There were "almost no houses standing" in one town in the Suzu area, said municipal mayor Masuhiro Izumiya.&nbsp;

"About 90 per cent of the houses (in that town) are completely or almost completely destroyed... the situation is really catastrophic," he said, according to broadcaster TBS.

According to the regional government, 73 people are dead and nearly 400 injured. The toll is expected to rise.

More than 33,400 people were in shelters, and at least 200 buildings had collapsed.

Around 30,000 households were still without power in Ishikawa prefecture, the local utility said, and over 110,000 households were left without running water.&nbsp;

A knife-wielding woman unleashed a stabbing spree on four individuals on Wednesday (Jan 3) in a train at Akihabara Station in the Japanese capital city of Tokyo, media reports said citing police authorities.

At least three of four people caught in the unexpected incident on the Yamanote loop line were injured.&nbsp;Fortunately, none of them are facing life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;

Notably, the Yamanote loop line is a key route that links all the main stations in Tokyo. It is also one of the busiest routes in the city and all of its 30 stations, except for two, connect to other railway or subway lines.
