Donald Trump, the first former US president to be convicted in a criminal trial, has requested a judge to remove a gag order placed on him during his recent hush money trial.

As per a filing released Tuesday (June 4), Trump has asked Judge Juan Merchan — who imposed the gag order — to terminate it.

<h2>Trump's gag order</h2>

This order limits Trump's ability to publicly comment on the trial's jurors, witnesses, prosecutors&nbsp;and court staff. It was later extended to prevent comments about his own family and the prosecutor's family.

On multiple occasions during the trial, Trump was found to be guilty of breaking the gag order. He was fined $10,000 by the New York court for not adhering to the gag order. He was also threatened with jail time for openly flouting Judge Merchan's order.

Now, in a letter, Trump's lawyer Todd Blanche has asked Judge Merchan to "terminate the gag order restricting president Trump's extrajudicial statements."

In the letter, Blanche, as per AFP, argues that the trial's end negates the need for continued restrictions on Trump's speech, especially as he is a prominent candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

"Now that the trial is concluded, the concerns articulated by the government and the court do not justify continued restrictions on the First Amendment rights of president Trump -- who remains the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election," said Blanche.

The Philippines Navy has been damaging Chinese fishing nets in the South China Sea and removing them completely near the Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, Chinese media has reported. Xinhua news agency reported Tuesday (Jun 4) that Philippines military personnel tore down fishing nets laid by Chinese fishermen in the surrounding waters. Some videos showing the troops aboard rubber boats cutting the nets have also appeared on social media.

As per an estimate by Chinese media, the Philippine military has so far damaged 2,000 metres of fishing net and taken more than 100 metres since May 15. Chinese coast guard later helped Chinese fishermen gather their destroyed nets from the area.

The latest incident is all set to further ratchet up tensions between the two nations as Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration in the Philippines takes a more assertive stance and forges closer military ties with the US.

According to analysts, such acts by Manila were totally legal and understandable as Chinese fishermen don't have the right to operate in the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone. The Second Thomas Shoal lies within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer EEZ, some 194 km off Palawan province.

“If they see illegal acts, they can initiate the dismantling of intrusive objects since they are the prime protector of our sovereign state and the people,” Security analyst Chester Cabalza was quoted as saying by Inquirer.net.

“China will always try to twist the story to advance their national interest,” he added, saying, “The placement of nets near Ayungin Shoal is a provocation.”

Before that, the mission was supposed to lift off on May 6 but it was also delayed with two hours left in the countdown.

<h2>Significance of the flight</h2>

If the mission remains successful, NASA can then rely on Boeing services for carrying out routine trips to the orbiting outpost. As of now, NASA's options are limited as it has just two service providers: SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule and Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

The two veteran astronauts are well-prepared to deal with any kind of emergency situations. They will take control of the autonomous Starliner spacecraft if&nbsp;something goes wrong.

"They're checking out a lot of the systems: the life support, the manual control," NASA chief Bill Nelson said during a May 3 news conference. "That's why we put two test pilots on board — and of course the resumes of Butch and Suni are extensive."

The two astronauts are expected to spend eight days inside the orbiting laboratory, joining the seven astronauts and cosmonauts already on board.

In a significant move, the Republican-led US House of Representatives has passed a legislation that seeks to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). These bills and the subsequent sanctions are in response to the ICC prosecutor's decision to pursue arrest warrants for Israeli officials related to the ongoing war in Gaza.

<h2>America supports Israel</h2>

Titled the US House's "Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act",&nbsp;Reuters reports that the contentious vote ended with 247 lawmakers in favour and 155 against. This includes support from 42 Democrats.&nbsp;

Notably, none of the Republicans voted "nay," although two opted to vote "present" instead of an "aye".

In s statement, as reported by AFP, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said, "Today's vote draws a line in the sand for lawless action by ICC officials."

"The US firmly stands with Israel and refuses to allow international bureaucrats to baselessly issue arrest warrants to Israeli leadership for false crimes," he added.

<h2>Will it become a law?</h2>

While the bill is not expected to become law, as per the report, it underscores the strong backing for Israel in Congress amidst international criticism of its Gaza campaign.&nbsp;

Last month, the White House had also condemned the ICC's decision to seek these arrest warrants.

It is unlikely to take up the measure for a vote in the Senate, which has a narrow Democratic majority.

However, if it were to pass, the legislation would impose sanctions on individuals involved in ICC prosecutions of Americans or citizens of US allies who are not members of the ICC, such as Israel.&nbsp;

These sanctions would include barring entry to the US, revoking visas, and restricting them from property transactions in the nation.

Recently, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said that after more than seven months into the conflict in Gaza, there were reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and&nbsp;his defence chief "bear criminal responsibility" for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Khan also sought to penalise three Hamas leaders for the same.

It also reportedly had crew lists of Japanese Navy ships which had visited the island nation. Some of the thousands of documents stolen also detailed the close relationship between Palau and Taiwan.&nbsp;

After the NYT report, Taiwan, on Monday (Jun 3) condemning the cyberattack said that it was ready to help Palau beef up its digital defences against “authoritarian infiltration.”

“China wants to weaken those relationships, show our vulnerability, and what a great way to do it by hacking our system,” said Whipps presumably referring to the island nation’s relations with Taiwan and the US.&nbsp;

According to Palau’s president, the analysis of the data showed the ransomware was likely developed in Russia. It was sent out of Malaysia and “it looks like it has ties back to China”.&nbsp;

He added, “The reason we say maybe there’s government involvement is that they weren’t interested in money. They really didn’t demand any money.”

However, the NYT reported a ransomware group known as DragonForce claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks and said it carried out the ‘hack purely for financial gain’.&nbsp;

“It is extremely irresponsible for Palau to jump to conclusions and make unfounded accusations and smears against China without valid evidence,” said the Chinese foreign ministry, as quoted by NYT.&nbsp;

The stoppage called by two main&nbsp;unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), came as Africa's most populous nation struggles with soaring inflation and an unstable naira currency.

On Monday, union workers shut down the national grid, stalled domestic flights and closed most federal offices, ports, petrol stations and courts to demand the government increase its offer for a higher minimum salary.

The government late Monday said the&nbsp;unions&nbsp;had agreed to another week of negotiations to try to reach an agreement.

After consultations on the government's position with their members on Tuesday, NLC and TUC said they had called off the strike for seven days.

"There is a greater need to create the right ambience for negotiation to continue unhindered," the two&nbsp;unions&nbsp;said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The indefinite nationwide strike action is therefore relaxed for one week from today to allow the Federal Government commit to a concrete and acceptable National Minimum Wage."

Unions&nbsp;had been demanding a minimum monthly wage of 494,000 naira (around $330), up from the current level of 30,000 naira.&nbsp;

The government said late on Monday it was "committed to a National Minimum Wage that is higher than N60,000" and that the two sides would meet "every day for the next week" in order to reach a deal.

The&nbsp;unions&nbsp;are also protesting for the reversal of a steep electricity tariff hike, one of the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

They said&nbsp;unions&nbsp;were "deeply disappointed by the government's silence and lack of concrete action" on the tariff.

Since coming to office a year ago, Tinubu has ended a fuel subsidy and currency controls, leading to a tripling of petrol prices and a spike in living costs as the naira has slid against the dollar.

The government has asked Nigerians to give time for the reforms to work, saying they will draw more foreign investment, but the measures have&nbsp;hit spending power hard.
