Russian prosecutors said on Thursday they had sent the case of detained U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich to court after concluding he had been collecting information for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency about a Russian tank factory.

Gershkovich, 32, was arrested on March 29, 2023, in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg on charges of espionage that carry up to 20 years in prison after the FSB, the main successor agency to the KGB, said it had caught him "red-handed" trying to obtain military secrets.

He denies any wrongdoing and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, said in a statement on Thursday after the latest Russian move that he was facing "a false and baseless charge" based on what it called "calculated and transparent lies." President Joe Biden has called his detention "totally illegal".

The Journal spoke out after the office of Russia's General Prosecutor said in a statement it had approved Gershkovich's criminal indictment and that his case would be heard by a court in Yekaterinburg.

It did not say when the case would be heard or whether the trial would be closed to the public as is common in such cases.

"The investigation has established and confirmed with documentary evidence that Gershkovich, an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal, on the instructions of the CIA, collected secret information in the Sverdlovsk region in March 2023 about the activities of the defence plant NPK Uralvagonzavod JSC on the production and repair of military equipment," the prosecutors' statement said.

"Gershkovich carried out the illegal actions using painstaking conspiratorial methods," it added.

Prosecutors did not release any documentary evidence to back the charge.

PRE-TRIAL DETENTION

A joint statement from Almar Latour, his newspaper's publisher, and its editor in chief, Emma Tucker, demanded Gershkovich's immediate release.

"Russia’s latest move toward a sham trial is, while expected, deeply disappointing and still no less outrageous," the statement said.

"Evan has spent 441 days wrongfully detained in a Russian prison for simply doing his job. Evan is a journalist. The Russian regime’s smearing of Evan is repugnant, disgusting and based on calculated and transparent lies."

Latour and Tucker said they now expected the U.S. government to redouble efforts to secure his release.

The first U.S. journalist arrested on spying charges in Russia since the Cold War, Gershkovich is currently being held in pre-trial detention in Moscow and had been the subject of prisoner exchange talks between Moscow and Washington.

The Uralvagonzavod factory, about which he is accused of gathering secret data, has been sanctioned by the West. Based in the city of Nizhny Tagil in the Sverdlovsk region, it plays a crucial role in supplying tanks for Moscow's war in Ukraine, according to the Russian defence ministry.

The factory, which is run by a state conglomerate controlled by one of President Vladimir Putin's allies, has publicly spoken of producing T-90M battle tanks and modernising T-72B3M tanks.

The number of tanks which Russia has lost in battle in Ukraine is a military secret in Russia, which says it has ramped up tank production.

The London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies said in February that Russia had lost more than 3,000 tanks - the equivalent of its entire pre-war active inventory - but had enough lower-quality armoured vehicles in storage for years of replacements.

As per a BBC report, the suspected woman was released on Thursday (May 13), and the inquiries are ongoing.

In a statement to the press, Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell said, "This has been an extremely complex investigation into events that happened more than four decades ago and a great deal of work has gone in to getting us to this point."

"Dozens of officers from both Northamptonshire Police and our colleagues in the region, have been involved in the operation over the past 48 hours or more and I would like to thank all of them for their work."

In May 1982, the body of a newborn baby girl was found in a carrier bag near Northampton railway station.&nbsp;

According to an article published in the Northampton Chronicle and Echo in December 2019, the baby was reportedly found strangled and wrapped in cloth.

The baby girl was buried in Towcester Road Cemetery in November 1982. In 2019, the baby girl was given a headstone after a campaign by a former local vicar.

Last month, the president publicly outlined a deal he said was proposed by Israel, which would halt fighting and release the 116 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.&nbsp;

Despite gaining international support, Hamas rejected the offer due to the absence of an Israeli commitment to a permanent ceasefire.

The war began after Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the death&nbsp;of 1,194 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

It is believed that the discovery made in southwest Spain was related to the ancient Paleo-Hispanic civilisation of Tartessos and this is the third piece of evidence of an alphabet inscription, reported Fox News.

<h2>Why is Tartessos considered a 'lost' civilisation?</h2>

Tartessos existed as an ancient civilisation which was spread across the southern Iberian Peninsula more than 3,000 years ago.&nbsp;

The experts consider this civilisation "lost" because its very less remnants still survive. The slate was discovered as part of the project called "Building Tartessus".

According to&nbsp;experts, on the stone tablet were inscriptions of "what appears&nbsp;to be a sequence of 21 signs drawn within the framework of the tablet on which figures were also found of warriors."

The stone tablet, which was found at an archaeological site in Casas del Turuñuelo of the Badajoz province, is likely to have been chiselled as early as 600 BC.&nbsp;

Speaking about the stone tablet, University of Barcelona researcher Joan Ferrer i&nbsp;Jane said that “other strokes compatible with signs of a known sequence [were also seen].”

"At least 6 signs would have been lost in the split area of the piece, but if it were completely symmetrical and the signs completely occupied three of the four sides of the plate it could reach 32 signs, so the lost signs could become eleven or perhaps more if a possible sign, ‘Tu’, isolated in the lateral quarter, were part of the alphabet," Ferrer said.

United States President Joe Biden continued to watch the Secret Service members getting attacked by his German shepherd Commander as the latter wished each other a "safe shift".

According to a report published in The New York Post, the Secret Service members have been finding it difficult to work with President Biden and there have been safety concerns in their workplace due to the president's dog Commander.

His ferocious dog has been repeatedly biting and attacking people amid safety professionals appealing to use a muzzle.

A number of USSS personnel said that the dog attacked people when he was walking with Biden and that the president witnessed the incidents first-hand.

Over 1,000 animals lost their lives in Thailand after a deadly blaze ripped through Bangkok's famous Chatuchak market early on Tuesday (June 11).

The fire engulfed nearly 118 shops as it ravaged around 1,300 square metres (13,993 square feet) of the Chatuchak Weekend Market.

The exotic animals including snakes, spiders and Siamese fighting fish were burnt to death in the incident, Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt told media.

The preliminary inspection suggested that the fire was caused by an electrical fault, said Police Superintendent Phuwadon Ounpho.

As per the authorities, no human casualties or injuries were reported in the blaze.

One of the shop owners said that they had received a call about spotting fire in the market at around 5 am but upon reaching they saw that their shop was engulfed in flames.

"Someone called my sister (Natthanicha) about the fire around 5 am but the fire had started around 4 am. When she arrived, the building was in flames,” said shop owner Adisak.

"The snakes were trapped in their enclosures, in their boxes. They were not able to escape," he added.

In the aftermath of the incident, firefighters and rescue workers, as per the news agency Reuters, were seen picking through carcasses and collapsed roofs of the shops.

"I have been in shock. I feel like I wanted to cry but there are no tears," 49-year-old Siamese fighting fish shop owner Suwannee Sangdee said.

"This has been my family's main source of income. Our main income, a considerable amount of it, in fact, will be gone. I have to try to keep myself sane and work out how I'm going to sort out my finances," he added.

With around 15,000 shops spread across 35 acres, Chatuchak is one of South East Asia's biggest markets.

It is famous among tourists for fashion, accessories and exotic animals. The market claims to draw approximately 200,000 tourists on the weekends.

The pet zone in the market has been long criticised for keeping animals in poor living conditions and reportedly has led to the spread of diseases.

The incident triggered renewed calls for authorities to shut down this zone.

UKMTO released three updates. In the first one, it said that the vessel was hit on the stern by a small craft. The small craft was described as white in colour and five - seven metres in length.&nbsp;

The news agency Reuters reported that a Greek shipping ministry source, confirming the incident, said that the vessel was also attacked from the air. The source said that the ship was sailing to India when it was hit.&nbsp;

The official on condition of anonymity told the news agency&nbsp;"it was hit twice by air and by sea. There are no reports of injuries".&nbsp;
