On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is likely to hold bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

United States NSA Jake Sullivan said that their government is likely to discuss the foiled murder-for-hire plot against Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun with India.&nbsp;

He said that this will be “a continuing topic of dialogue between the US and India, including at very senior levels”.&nbsp;

After arriving in Italy, PM Modi wrote on X, "Landed in Italy to take part in the G7 Summit. Looking forward to engaging in productive discussions with world leaders. Together, we aim to address global challenges and foster international cooperation for a brighter future."

During his visit to Italy, PM Modi is set to participate in a summit session titled Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa-Mediterranean which will be hosted by Italian Prime Minister&nbsp;Meloni and joined by Pope Francis.&nbsp;

Pope Francis is also likely to hold bilateral talks with PM Modi. In his departure statement, PM Modi said, "I look forward to meeting fellow world leaders and discussing a wide range of issues aimed at making our planet better and improving lives of people."

He added that he was "glad" to make his first foreign visit to Italy for the G7 Summit at the start of his third consecutive term as the prime minister.

"I warmly recall my visit to Italy for the G20 Summit in 2021. Prime Minister Meloni's two visits to India last year were instrumental in infusing momentum and depth in our bilateral agenda. We remain committed to consolidate the India-Italy strategic partnership, and bolster cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions," read his statement.

"During the discussions at the Outreach session, the focus would be on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. It will be an opportunity to bring greater synergy between the outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India's Presidency and the forthcoming G7 Summit and deliberate on issues which are crucial for the Global South. <h2>G7 to strengthen dialogue with Global South: Meloni</h2>

Italian PM Meloni, in her opening address, said that southern Italy is the venue of the summit to deliver a strong message to the Global South.

"It is no coincidence that we are hosting the summit in Apulia. We did this because Apulia is a region of southern Italy and the message we want to launch is that the G7, under the Italian presidency, wishes to strengthen its dialogue with the nations of the Global South," said PM Meloni.

Apart from India, Italy sent&nbsp;invitations to the G7 Summit to 11 developing countries in Africa, South America and the Indo-Pacific region.

A security source told Reuters that involved firing at least 30 attack drones at once, making it the group's largest drone attack to date in the eight-month-old war.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel have been trading fire since the eruption of the Gaza war in October, but the last two days have seen a sharp rise following the Israeli strike that killed the Hezbollah commander.

The group said Thursday's attack was in response to the killing. It had already carried out at least eight attacks on Wednesday in retaliation.

40 rockets fired from Lebanon to northern Israel: Military

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that suspected drone infiltration sirens that sounded in the Golan Heights in the evening were triggered by three targets that were identified. According to the military, the three targets, possibly drones, were downed by air defences.&nbsp;

IDF said on X that the "fighter jets recently attacked a military structure of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Al-Jarmal area in southern Lebanon".

It added, "Further to the warnings that were activated in the north of the country at 20:01 for fear of the infiltration of a hostile aircraft, this is a false identification."&nbsp;

It also said that&nbsp;after the alerts that were activated at 20:14 pm (local time) in Yeara, two missiles were detected that crossed the territory of Lebanon and fell in open areas, there are no casualties.&nbsp;

In a statement, the group said that Hezbollah fighters launched "an attack with rockets and drones, targeting six barracks and military sites" while simultaneously flying "squadrons of explosive-laden drones" at three other Israeli bases.&nbsp;

One of the targets included an Israeli base that Hezbollah said housed an intelligence headquarters "responsible for the assassinations".&nbsp;

Hezbollah said the attacks were "part of the response to the assassination" of Hezbollah commander Taleb Abdallah on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The latest IAEA motion, brought by Britain, France, and Germany, marks the first such resolution since November 2022&nbsp;—&nbsp;China and Russia were in opposition to it.

It came amid ongoing concerns over Iran's escalating nuclear activities and Western fears that Tehran may be aiming to develop nuclear weapons, a claim Iran denies.&nbsp;

The resolution was criticised by Tehran as "hasty and unwise."

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (Jun 14) slammed the 'selfish' and 'arrogant' Western powers for bringing the world "unacceptably close" to the point of "no return".&nbsp;Putin addressed the Russian Foreign Ministry meeting as he criticised the actions of the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He accused the West of undermining global strategic stability. &nbsp;

"So far, the West has been ignoring our interests. While they forbid Kyiv to negotiate, they hypocritically call on us to start some sort of negotiations. It just looks idiotic," Putin said during the address.&nbsp;

He also said that Russia would be ready for such talks "tomorrow" if Ukrainian troops withdrew from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions, and also gave up its plans to join NATO.&nbsp;

<h2>NATO's response to Putin's proposal&nbsp;</h2>

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg responded by slamming&nbsp;the peace talks conditions, calling them a proposal for "more aggression, more occupation".&nbsp;

"This is not a proposal made in good faith. This is a proposal that actually means that Russia should achieve their war aims, by expecting that Ukrainians should give up significantly more land than Russia has been able to occupy so far," Stoltenberg told reporters following a meeting of defence ministers in Brussels.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Ukraine rejected Putin's "conditions" to halt the full-scale military offensive which was launched by Russia in February 2022. Kyiv has been trying to corral international support at a major peace summit in Switzerland this weekend.&nbsp;

Both nations have not engaged in any direct peace talks since the first weeks of Russia's campaign when it was advancing on the Ukrainian capital.&nbsp;

Ukraine has called for the full withdrawal of Russian troops from its internationally recognised territory, including the annexed Crimean peninsula, as part of any peace deal.&nbsp;

Notably,&nbsp;Russia claimed to have annexed the four regions in 2022, despite not having full control over any of them.&nbsp;The regional capitals of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are still in Ukrainian hands.

The UK, US and Canada have jointly called out Russia for plotting to influence Moldova's upcoming presidential election and referendum on European Union membership later this year.

The three governments in a joint statement issued on the first day of the G7 summit, accused Russian actors of “spreading lies” and being engaged in a long-running campaign of political interference aimed at weakening Moldova's democratic institutions.

The three countries said Moscow was trying to undermine Moldova’s pro-western president, Maia Sandu, before the next presidential election and referendum on EU membership. Both votes are due on 20 October.

The former Soviet nation bordering Ukraine has long feared Russian meddling in its internal affairs, particularly in the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transnistria and the autonomous southern region of Gagauzia. Sandu's administration has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow.

According to the UK, US and Canadian governments, Russian actors were seeking to foment negative public view of Sandu, western governments and the prospect of Moldovan membership of the EU.&nbsp;

Notably, Sandu has been president since 2020, when she was elected with 57.7% of the vote in the final runoff.

The three governments accused Russia of actively using disinformation and propaganda online, on the air, and on their streets to further their objectives&nbsp;of “degrading public confidence in Moldova’s ability to secure itself and maintain rule of law”.

The three countries further said that if Sandu were re-elected, “there is reason to believe Moscow will work to provoke protests”.&nbsp;

They said they were working closely with the Moldovan government and had already sanctioned actors involved, with further sanctions being considered.

“We will support Moldova and the Moldovan people as they manage Kremlin interference and the impacts of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the statement from the UK, US and Canada said.

“We strongly support Moldova’s democratic, economic, security, and anticorruption reforms and deepening European integration."

The UK, US and Canada have jointly called out Russia for plotting to influence Moldova's upcoming presidential election and referendum on European Union membership later this year. The three governments in a joint statement issued on the first day of the G7 summit, accused Russian actors of “spreading lies” and being engaged in a long-running campaign of political interference aimed at weakening Moldova's democratic institutions. Also read: Moldova PM Recean invites Indian students and tourists The three countries said Moscow was trying to undermine Moldova’s pro-western president, Maia Sandu, before the next presidential election and referendum on EU membership. Both votes are due on 20 October. The former Soviet nation bordering Ukraine has long feared Russian meddling in its internal affairs, particularly in the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transnistria and the autonomous southern region of Gagauzia. Sandu's administration has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow. According to the UK, US and Canadian governments, Russian actors were seeking to foment negative public view of Sandu, western governments and the prospect of Moldovan membership of the EU. Notably, Sandu has been president since 2020, when she was elected with 57.7% of the vote in the final runoff. The three governments accused Russia of actively using disinformation and propaganda online, on the air, and on their streets to further their objectives of “degrading public confidence in Moldova’s ability to secure itself and maintain rule of law”. They said they were working closely with the Moldovan government and had already sanctioned actors involved, with further sanctions being considered. “We will support Moldova and the Moldovan people as they manage Kremlin interference and the impacts of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” the statement from the UK, US and Canada said. “We strongly support Moldova’s democratic, economic, security, and anticorruption reforms and deepening European integration." This action sends a strong message, we champion free and fair elections, and we will not stand idly by while Russia undermines democratic processes. We call on the Kremlin to cease these attempts to subvert Moldovan democracy and respect the country's sovereignty and the results of a free, fair, and independent election,” the statement further said.
