UK: Woman arrested on suspicion of murdering baby girl over four decades ago

A UK woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder, more than 40 years after she allegedly killed a baby girl.
In a statement, the Northamptonshire Police said that the detectives questioned a 57-year-old on Tuesday (June 11) in relation to a body found in Northampton in May 1982.
While the discovery was investigated back in 1982, no one was prosecuted. In 2023, new evidence came to light following a cold case review.

As per a BBC report, the suspected woman was released on Thursday (May 13), and the inquiries are ongoing.

In a statement to the press, Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell said, "This has been an extremely complex investigation into events that happened more than four decades ago and a great deal of work has gone in to getting us to this point."
"Dozens of officers from both Northamptonshire Police and our colleagues in the region, have been involved in the operation over the past 48 hours or more and I would like to thank all of them for their work."

"This inquiry remains live and ongoing and, as such, Northamptonshire Police will be making no further comment at this time."
Decades-old murder
In May 1982, the body of a newborn baby girl was found in a carrier bag near Northampton railway station.
According to an article published in the Northampton Chronicle and Echo in December 2019, the baby was reportedly found strangled and wrapped in cloth.
The baby girl was buried in Towcester Road Cemetery in November 1982. In 2019, the baby girl was given a headstone after a campaign by a former local vicar.
